I am Darius Ninal, a senior at Sangamon Valley High School in Niantic, Illinois. I have a strong interest in all subjects related to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and I hope to pursue a career in this field after attending college.
I have always been particularly intrigued by physics, chemistry, and biology, which have played a significant role in my coursework throughout high school and will influence my college major. I plan to pursue Chemical Engineering or Biology in college, depending on which institution I attend. Regardless of my path, I am committed to working in the healthcare industry, as this has always been my goal—as it is a tradition in my family. Stepping away from my life goal, I have a deep interest in world history and geopolitics during any period, along with multiple sports such as American Football, soccer, and Formula One.

I moved to the United States at the age of 6 in the later part of 2013 as a first-generation immigrant with my mother. I spoke no English and had to adjust to the United States at a young age. During that first year in the United States, my mother instilled traditional Filipino values in me, such as positivity, discipline, and adaptability, which were passed down to her by my grandparents. These values have shaped my educational journey positively, which has allowed me to succeed in all types of environments, no matter the difficulty.
The first and most important value that I listed that I remember is discipline. In first grade, when I was adjusting to the United States, I was still held up to a high standard by my mother in terms of academics. I had a daily routine that my mother made sure that I followed every day to ensure that my schoolwork wasn't neglected. This simple routine after school was to finish homework and study before doing anything for fun. This was to make sure that my studying and doing schoolwork were rewarded with free time such as TV. This discipline and routine set 12 years ago is still present in my current life, which has set me up for future life thanks to my mother.
The second value is adaptability. Adaptability is an essential value to have, and Filipinos do not lack this wonderful value. My experience when moving from the Philippines to the United States was very challenging, and I had to adapt to succeed. At first, it was very challenging with the language barrier, no familiar people, etc. As the days passed by after my first day, it got easier and easier to learn and interact with my peers and educators. This was done by accepting the fact that I was in a new environment and that I had to adopt the English language and interact with other classmates to make new friends. Making new friends was the most challenging part, but I had accepted the fact that I needed new friends or else I'd suffer social isolation and school would be miserable.
The third and final Filipino value that I listed is positivity. Positivity is necessary when facing challenges and is appreciated by nearly everyone in the world. I am a positive person, and it has helped me throughout my academic journey when facing challenging assignments, tests, and projects. Keeping a positive outlook and attitude has never failed me in my academic career, which is no coincidence. No matter what situation I am in, there is a positive angle to it, which keeps me motivated. In my academic career, whenever I've had to force myself to study, I always looked at it as preparation for my life goal of working somewhere in the medical industry, and if I pass, I'll be one step closer to achieving that lifelong dream.
