My name is Darius Bartley, otherwise known as Duke to those I'm familiar with. I am a diligent worker that will always accomplish my goals. To describe a few things about myself, I am a dual enrolled student at Sandy Creek currently attending Point University. I am also a previous football player as well as a Pilar in my community. I have plenty of service experience with assisting the elderly, I also participate in DECA as well as FBLA, both of which hold food and toy drives for the community. Any of my teachers throughout my four years at Sandy Creek would describe me as a quiet but hardworking young man. I went through COVID just like many others but I did not do my part to stay on top of my grades during the pandemic. Since then I've tried my hardest to raise my GPA and I'm beyond proud of the 3.0 I managed to get to.

As we progress through life, we all face challenges and hardships on various levels of intensity. The biggest obstacle of my lifetime was navigating life while also experiencing the first year of COVID-19.
When Covid struck, it resulted in a nationwide quarantine.
While this meant no contact with people I don't live with, it also meant not being able to physically attend school. I knew l needed to be in school to succeed but my parents decided it was best to keep me home. People all across the country were having to make this hard decision, too. I appreciate my parents for having my physical health in mind, but I learned that not everything can be taught through a screen.
The idea of virtual school didn't seem as bad as it truly was.
Not only was it my first year of high school, but it was also my first year being a virtual student. My grades began to fall, shown by my transcript, and my mental health with them.
Furthermore, this was indubitably the worst possible year for everything to collapse. Freshman year, the year that can make or break the rest of your career, I flunked. As a previous straight A student, this left me in a complete state of stupefaction. I was not used to being in the bottom tier of students. I had always been on the honor roll, accelerated, and generally known for being studious.
Yet, this drastic change of scenery opened my eyes. I wanted to concede defeat and fall into a fathomless pit of despair, but something deep in my heart revivified my passion to be something in this vast world. My parents did everything they could to give me the best education and surround me with people who had my best interest in mind. I refused to disappoint them by not taking advantage of the opportunities | had been given. I knew exactly what I had to do.
The second semester of ninth grade I integrated back into school and I was finally able to see many of the familiar faces I had grown accustomed to. Moreover, as soon as I stepped foot into a classroom I instantaneously knew everything would be different from that point on. I began to redeem myself grade wise and I recovered credits for the classes I completely and utterly failed all at the same time. Everything began working out.
Although I haven't finished high school yet l'm so proud of myself for recovering after digging my own grave. Moreover, my GPA may not be as high as it should be, but I will still try my best to get into college. I hope that my test scores and essays can get my foot in the door and secure my future. I am currently enrolled in dual enrollment courses and have all A's. I know that if I can achieve it right now, I'll be able to after I graduate and go to college. The year of Covid may have hindered me at first, but I have pushed myself to overcome its effects and I will continue on this path.

Coping with the loss of my cousin Sean back in 2022, was an emotional journey that reshaped my perspective on life. In the aftermath of his passing, I grappled with grief, but gradually, I discovered profound lessons that have become integral to my understanding of resilience and the human experience.
Initially, the pain of Sean's death was all-encompassing. Navigating through the stages of grief, I found solace in the support of friends and family. Sharing memories, laughter, and tears with those who also cherished Sean allowed us to collectively honor his life and find comfort in our shared experiences. This communal grieving process highlighted the importance of human connection in times of profound loss.
As time passed, I realized the need to embrace the memories of Sean with love rather than letting sorrow define his legacy. Reflecting on the positive impact he had on my life and others, I began to channel my grief into celebrating the richness of his existence. This shift in perspective taught me the transformative power of gratitude — a recognition that, even in loss, we can be thankful for the meaningful moments and the enduring love we shared.
The journey toward healing unveiled the lesson of impermanence. Sean's untimely departure emphasized the fragility of life and the unpredictability of its course. This realization prompted a reevaluation of priorities, compelling me to cherish relationships, pursue passions, and savor the present moment. Sean's passing became a reminder that life's briefness calls for a conscious and purposeful approach to living.
In coping with the grief, I turned to self-reflection as a means of understanding the complex emotions that accompanied loss. This introspection led me to appreciate the importance of mental and emotional well-being. I sought out supportive outlets, from therapy to creative expressions, recognizing that acknowledging and processing grief is an essential part of healing. This lesson underscored the significance of emotional intelligence and self-care in navigating life's challenges.
Sean's death also sparked a profound sense of empathy for others facing loss. The shared experience of grief created a bridge between individuals who had encountered similar heartache. This newfound empathy inspired me to engage in acts of kindness and support within my community, recognizing that compassion is a powerful force that connects us in our shared humanity.
Ultimately, overcoming the death of my cousin Sean was a transformative journey that imparted enduring lessons. From the importance of human connection and gratitude to the recognition of life's impermanence and the value of empathy, each lesson became a stepping stone toward healing. While the pain of loss never completely dissipates, the wisdom gained through this experience has become an integral part of my resilience, shaping the way I approach relationships, adversity, and the broader tapestry of life.

DUIs can not only affect the person driving impaired, but they can also impact their family, and potentially other people driving on the road as well. A personal story for me involving a drunk driver would be when my cousin Sean passed while riding his motorcycle. He was hit by a drunk driver. Furthermore, to make matters worse, the driver fled from the scene upon realizing what had occurred. The police were never able to get justice for Sean due to the lack of evidence. In this essay, I will talk about the specific effects of DUIs and strategies I believe could prevent them going forward.
The effects of DUIs are extensive. Firstly, driving while alcoholically impaired can result in legal consequences. Ranging from simple fines to possibly even prison time. Secondly, DUIs can dig deep into one's wallet. Being convicted of a DUI can raise insurance premiums, court costs, and could potentially result in loss of employment. Moreover, personal relationships could be severely impacted by being convicted because many will think that you are a reckless, selfish individual.
A few strategies I believe could limit the number of DUIs are things like increased awareness, stricter punishments, ignition locks in the cars of previously convicted drivers, and most simple of all, personal responsibility. If more people would take responsibilty and use good judgement, many of these terrible DUI stories would never had occured.
