Patricia A. Curley Memorial Arts Scholarship
Ever since I was a young girl, I've been drawn to the arts, captivated by their ability to stir emotions, challenge perspectives, and spark creativity. Art has always held a special place in my heart, whether it's the vibrant colors of a painting, the rhythmic beats of a song, or the poignant words of a poem.
Growing up in a family with limited resources, I often found myself yearning to explore my artistic inclinations. However, access to art classes, art supplies, and opportunities to showcase my work were scarce. This forced me to navigate the artistic realm largely on my own, relying on my creativity and resourcefulness to fuel my passion.
Despite these challenges, my love for the arts never wavered. I found solace and expression in the simple act of creating, transforming everyday objects into canvases, scrap paper into sculptures, and everyday experiences into stories. I also immersed myself in the works of renowned artists, seeking inspiration from their mastery of form, color, and emotion.
My financial situation not only impacted my pursuit of the arts but also shaped my overall approach to life. I learned to be resourceful, utilizing my creativity to find alternative solutions and overcome obstacles. I developed a strong work ethic, taking on part-time and (full-time) jobs to support my artistic endeavors and manage my finances responsibly while attending school.
The challenges I faced also honed my analytical skills, nurturing my ability to plan, organize, and persevere. I became adept at time management, balancing my academic pursuits, part-time work, and artistic passions. I learned to prioritize tasks, set realistic goals, and seek guidance from others when needed.
As I matured, I discovered that my creative right-brain and analytical left-brain worked harmoniously, enabling me to approach challenges with a unique blend of imagination and pragmatism. This balance has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth, allowing me to navigate the complexities of life while staying true to my artistic passions.
Today, I continue to pursue my artistic aspirations, finding fulfillment in creating and sharing my work with others. While the financial constraints of my upbringing remain present, they no longer dictate the trajectory of my artistic journey. Instead, they serve as a reminder of the resilience and determination that lie at the heart of my passion for the arts.
My story is a testament to the enduring power of passion amidst adversity. It is a reminder that even in the face of limited resources, art can flourish, enriching not only our individual lives but also the world around us.
Terry Masters Memorial Scholarship
As an artist, I find inspiration in the everyday world surrounding me, and perhaps nothing captivates my imagination more than nature. The beauty and diversity of the natural world provide me with an endless source of inspiration for my art. Nature's palette is vast and varied, offering infinite possibilities for artistic expression. Moreover, nature's forms, shapes, and inherent symbolism constantly fascinate me. The cycle of life and death, the seasons of growth and decay, and the interplay between predator and prey are all themes I explore in my art. These natural processes reflect the human experience and provide a rich tapestry of metaphors and symbols to incorporate into my work. Drawing on these universal themes, I hope to create art that resonates with viewers on a deeper level, evoking emotions and sparking contemplation. The colors, forms, and symbolism nature offers constantly remind us of the beauty and complexity of our world. Through my art, I aim to capture and share the essence of nature's wonders, inviting others to pause, reflect, and appreciate the intricate and awe-inspiring world surrounding us.
GRAFFITI ARTS SCHOLARSHIP
Art has significantly influenced my life, inspiring me to think creatively and encouraging me to pursue my passions. I have struggled with mental illness for most of my life, and creating art has helped me through the most difficult times. As an art lover, I have always been drawn to graffiti as an artistic expression. The way it captures the energy and spirit of the streets is mesmerizing, and I believe it can connect diverse groups of people and communities meaningfully.
I am drawn to how this art form varies from city to city. Each location seemingly has its unique style and approach to street art, influenced by the local culture, history, and community. I am fortunate to have explored many different cities, and their street art scenes. It has truly been an enlightening experience.
One city that stands out to me for its street art is Berlin, Germany. The city is now known for its vibrant and diverse art scene; although it hasn't always been this way... The Berlin Wall came down in 1989, becoming a canvas for artists and activists worldwide. I witnessed many people working on artwork on the remaining bits of the wall, this past Summer. It was a chilling, symbolic sight considering its dark history. I found an almost-empty spray paint can and made what I could with it, half of a heart. It felt special to contribute to something so meaningful. Berlin's street art opened my eyes to how powerful public art can be to a community.
The Grafitti Arts Scholarship entices me because it offers an opportunity to support students like me who are passionate about art and business. As a senior undergraduate with a deep interest in both fields, I see this scholarship as an opportunity to turn my passion for art into a career. Winning this scholarship would mean the world because it would help me fund my education and further develop my artistic skills. Art can significantly impact the world, and I am determined to contribute to this positive change.
As part of my creative portfolio, I have attached a few examples of my work. I mainly work in oil and acrylic paint. I deeply desire to complete murals in my community and am seeking opportunities. I am excited about the prospect of furthering my education and contributing to the world of street art. Thank you so much for your consideration.

Art has been an essential part of my life journey and has helped me manage my mental health challenges. As someone who has experienced anxiety and depression, I have found that creating art provides me with a therapeutic outlet that helps me process my emotions and thoughts.
From a young age, I have always enjoyed drawing and painting. These creative outlets allowed me to express myself in a way that words couldn't always capture. As I grew older, I started to explore other art forms, such as writing and photography. Each medium allowed me to channel my emotions differently, and I discovered new aspects of myself through each artistic endeavor.
As I continued to create art, I noticed that it positively impacted my mental health. Whenever I felt overwhelmed by my thoughts or emotions, I would use my skill to cope. I found that by focusing on the task, whether sketching or writing, my mind would become more relaxed and calm. Art gave me a sense of control and accomplishment, which helped boost my self-esteem and confidence.
Through my artistic journey, I have also discovered the power of art therapy. Art therapy is a form of therapy that uses creative expression to help individuals improve their mental health and well-being. As someone who has experienced the benefits of art in my own life, I am passionate about pursuing a career in art therapy.
Art therapy can be an effective tool for individuals who may struggle with traditional forms of therapy or who have difficulty expressing their emotions verbally. Art provides a non-judgmental and supportive environment where individuals can explore their thoughts and feelings in a safe and controlled way. As an art therapist, I hope to create a space where individuals can feel heard, understood, and validated.
In the future, I hope to obtain the necessary education and training to become a licensed art therapist. I am excited about the prospect of helping others find healing and growth through art, and I believe this career path will allow me to impact the world positively.
In conclusion, my journey in the arts has been transformative and has helped me manage my mental health and well-being. I believe that art has the power to heal and transform individuals. I am excited about the opportunity to pursue art therapy as a career so that I can help others find healing and growth through creative expression.
