I am currently a student in the Michigan State University Landscape Architecture program. I have an interest in community park design and planning. I believe that everyone has the right to experience the natural world and I strive to give that opportunity to as many people as I can.

My name is Daniel Onofrio, and I am a senior at Michigan State University, studying Landscape Architecture. I started my college journey at the University of Detroit Mercy in the Architecture program, but soon found out that the environment was not the right fit for me. I did a lot of research and found a program called Landscape Architecture at Michigan State. I knew I wanted to stay in a major that involved design because that is what I have loved to do since I was young. I then looked at the first word and saw “Landscape”. I was not sure exactly what I would do in the program, but after some research I found that it lined up perfectly with my love for the outdoors and the natural world.
After being in this field for a short four and a half years, I have listened to many lectures on what the Green Industry is and how it is so important for our future. After every lecture though, I always think about how simple the concept really is, these lectures try to make it very complex and that it will take a lot of work to achieve it, but in reality, it is the idea of designing a world where humans and the environmental world can live side-by-side with our actions impacting the environment as little as possible. Yes, the development of some of the elements that supplement this industry takes some time and energy, but small simple changes in our society would make the biggest impact and after a few months people would not even remember the way it was before.
I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to work an internship with a local Landscape Architect in Lansing, Michigan who mainly focuses on the public parks around the Mid-Michigan area and the things that I have learned during this period have taught me about the potential changes that we can make to keep our Earth healthy. The main ideology I have developed while working at my internship is the fact that everyone deserves the right to experience nature and the outdoors, and it is my job as a Landscape Architect in the future to design parks and public spaces that are accessible to everyone no matter who they are and also beneficial to the ecosystem around the park.
In conclusion, I have grown to appreciate what I have been studying to a degree where it does not feel like it is just a job I am trying to apply for after graduation. It has turned into a passion that is fueled by the fact that there is a desperate need for people that are going to make a change before climate change cannot be handled and I am excited to finish and help make those changes every day.
