From the moment I witnessed the beauty of nature on my first hike and the charm of my lovely Doberman, Jasmine, I knew where my heart belonged. During my career at Rutgers - New Brunswick, my path toward working with animals has been shaped by a combination of academic experiences and a deep-seated passion for understanding the world around us. With its diverse range of scientific disciplines and research opportunities, Rutgers provided the perfect environment to explore my interests and solidify my commitment to animal science. One of my most pivotal experiences was my involvement in Rutgers' wide array of biology and zoology courses. These classes were more than just academic requirements; they were gateways into the fascinating world of animal science. Over the years, lectures and labs introduced me to the intricate details of animal physiology, behavior, and ecology, fueling my natural curiosity. I found myself particularly drawn to the study of animal welfare and conservation—fields that require both a solid understanding of scientific principles and a genuine passion for the well-being of animals. I especially appreciated that my professors challenged us to think critically and apply ourselves, which deepened my engagement with our lessons. She would never let us get away with not answering her questions! While I enjoyed the theoretical aspects, I was particularly drawn to the hands-on experiences. My curiosity led me to seek out opportunities beyond the classroom. Rutgers’ emphasis on research provided the chance to work alongside professors and graduate students on fieldwork and laboratory projects. One memorable experience was in our animal nutrition class, where we handled broilers and layers and observed the effects of different protein concentrations on their growth. These hands-on moments reinforced my desire to pursue a career where I could engage deeply with science while also a learning more about animal welfare and how to properly care for our animals. Moreover, Rutgers' commitment to interdisciplinary learning encouraged me to explore related fields, such as environmental politics, broadening my perspective on the interconnectedness of our world and the importance of preserving biodiversity. This holistic approach to science has only strengthened my determination to contribute to the field of animal science, where I can utilize my understanding of the forces outside of animal sciences that still play immense roles in its fate. My time at Rutgers University has been instrumental in guiding me toward a career with animals. The combination of a rigorous science-based curriculum, hands-on opportunities, and the nurturing of my innate curiosity has set me on a path I am eager to follow. I am committed to continuing this journey in the form of veterinary medicine, driven by a desire to understand, protect, and advocate for the animals that share our world.
