HSINTELLIGENCE Minority / Indigenous Nurse Leader Scholarship
My early education and dreams came out from Guyana, South America. When I migrated with my family to the United States of America, I was able to obtain a public school education. During my high school years and into my adult life, I have developed many interests and talents. However, most recently, I am interested in pursuing a nursing career for the following reasons.
First and foremost, I have obtained a Home Health Aide certificate and I worked with patients from various cultures and racial backgrounds. My experience working with these patients has created a caring attitude for my fellow human beings and this has also motivated me to further pursue my education where I obtained a Medical Assistant diploma. Upon completion of this diploma, I did an internship at an OBGYN outpatient clinic that allowed me to triage patients, took vitals, and other related duties. After successfully completing my internship, I continued to work as an aide with private patients until I was laid off.
Secondly, I am a single parent who is taking care of my children. And I can truly say that this is a great learning experience in parenting and childcare because I am wearing many hats and still I am able to stay focus on the goals that I want to achieve in life. Taking care of my children has put a hold on my desire to earlier apply to college. Now, that they are in school, I am enthusiastic in starting and completing my nursing degree while I am working.
