The degree I decided to choose was Biology so I can pursue dentistry specifically pediatrics. I decided to pursue biology because I knew that my undergraduate degree in either biology or chemistry was a requirement for those who plan on becoming dentists or other health careers. Additionally, I always enjoyed science such as biology because it is such a broad subject, but there are subdivisions included to help break down the subject. The type of biology that a dentist will use are biochemistry and molecular biology to name a couple. Being a dentist is of course a field where you are serving your community nonstop. Since a young child, helping others has always been something enjoyable. While attending Pre-K, my teacher would have to instruct me to sit down because I was so invested in helping my peers who did not understand the subject. The teacher's aide would even ask me to help them with their assigned students who were special needs or had a hard time focusing in elementary school because they trusted that I knew what I was doing because I was observing them. I became so good with the students that at some point if the aides were out the teachers and or their parents would sometimes ask me to help them during the school day. One way for people to learn is to observe the demonstration and later apply it. So to make a positive impact in my community, I have to have a positive attitude toward those around me whether it is my patients or my staff. Earning this scholarship will help me with expenses toward my degree which is my first goal. I am very aware that gifted children will need more patience and time than regular children. One of the most important jobs of a dentist is to have patience with their patients because everyone has a different tolerance. Adapting to my patient's comfort will always be a priority whether the patient is gifted or not. You have to work for what you want in life. I wholeheartedly understand the ups and downs that gifted children may go through, but it is also a part of my job to accommodate them to the best of my ability which is what I am great at. However, with the help of this scholarship, some weight of financial assistance will be lifted off my shoulders and more confidence in my education will be gained to be a gift to those who are gifted and to those who are not.

We have all experienced the death of a loved one, but have you grown from that tragic phase? During these times we have all felt down about the situation; however, it makes us mature and view the world differently. I have grown to be independent and a leader, uniting and bringing the best out of others, and being responsible for not neglecting my needs. In the year 2010, my father passed away, and around that time I was 8 years old. Not only did my father’s death crush me, but it also took a toll on the family. There are still some uncovered wounds from this devastating event; however, I have used my father’s death as motivation and fuel to create an independent leader. It looked effortless when my mother showcased unity, independence, leadership, and responsibility while teaching her four kids not to neglect their own needs. This makes me value my mother as my forever role model. When there is an event at my school, I have always been the first person to volunteer, be trusted to lead assignments, and demonstrate a good work ethic. A few years after my father’s death, the family wasn’t as close. He was the glue that held the family together. Therefore I became the glue and began uniting everyone by making everybody laugh. When we all come together as a family it is nothing but a joke fest and it reminds us of all the precious memories. To further unite the family, I helped plan my grandmother’s birthday drive-by. At age 16 my grandmother trusted me enough to be responsible for planning a family reunion. I was both honored and terrified but it revealed how responsible and trustworthy she thought I was. One thing I do still have problems with is paying attention to other people’s needs instead of mine. I thought of it as being helpful, but at the same time, I was hurting myself. When my dad was in the hospital for the first time, everyone was crying, but me. At the age of seven, I was the only one going around telling people not to cry and that he will be okay. That has always been me since I could remember and I’m glad I did care for others more because they may have needed it more than I did. I am also proud that I realized neglecting my feelings was not healthy. To this day I still neglect my feelings at times, but I’m slowly learning how to create a healthy balance. I have taken responsibility for my feelings as demonstrated by my growth and maturity. To sum up, everything that’s been stated, my father’s death has led me to my maturity and helped me become the young black woman that I am today. I have matured from my dad’s death by learning how to become a leader, uniting and bringing the best out of others, and finally being responsible in paying attention to not neglecting my needs. Encountering my father’s death was a challenge, but the lessons I learned from his death strengthened skills that have been fundamental to my success.

Earning this scholarship will help me with expanses toward my degree which is my first goal. I believe confidence in college students comes from the amount of money that goes toward their continued education. If the student does not have enough scholarships and grants, that can be a possible reason why students decided to drop out of college. Also, it is up to the students to put a lot of dedication into their education. Knowing that by the time I will be finished with schooling, I do not plan on graduating with a lot of debt. I had to learn that sometimes opportunities will not always be given to you whether that applies to scholarships, jobs, or life. You have to work for what you want in life. However, with the help of this scholarship, some weight of financial assistance will be lifted off my shoulders and more confidence in my education will be gained.
