My name is Courtney Thompson-Meador, I'm 25 and currently enrolled in Ranger College as a Cosmetology student. I have two children who are 6 and 2. We come from a small town in Texas. My dream is to become the owner of my own salon where everyone that comes in leaves more confident than when they arrived and help the less fortunate. I want to dedicate my time to running a salon that will not only volunteer my time to my clients but also to foster homes and shelters.

Mental Health Importance Scholarship
I believe maintaining good mental health is crucial for overall well-being. Mental health has a profound impact on physical health, demonstrating the important connection between the two. To maintain mental wellness, individuals can engage in self-care activities, seek professional help and support when needed, develop healthy coping mechanisms and stress management techniques, practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques, and build and nurture strong social connections for emotional support. Prioritizing mental health and implementing these strategies can contribute to a balanced and healthy life.
Mental health affects various aspects of our lives, including our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences how we think, feel, and act and plays a vital role in managing stress, making healthy choices, and maintaining positive relationships. Recognizing the impact of mental health on our overall well-being helps us prioritize self-care activities that promote mental wellness. It also highlights the importance of seeking professional help and support when needed, developing healthy coping mechanisms and stress management techniques, practicing mindfulness and relaxation techniques, and building strong social connections for emotional support.
Developing healthy coping mechanisms is also crucial for maintaining mental wellness. This can include practicing mindfulness, learning stress management techniques, and building a strong support system of friends and loved ones. Additionally, setting realistic goals and boundaries can help prevent burnout and ensure a sustainable approach to mental well-being. Finding healthy coping mechanisms and stress management techniques involves finding healthy ways to manage and cope with stress, such as through deep breathing exercises and time-management strategies. Practicing mindfulness and relaxation techniques involves being present in the moment and engaging in activities that promote relaxation, such as meditation or yoga. Building and nurturing strong social connections for emotional support involves maintaining meaningful relationships and seeking comfort and support from loved ones when needed. When one's mental health is not in good condition, it often reflects on their physical health as well.
To maintain mental wellness, I find solace in nature and cherish moments with my children, whether it's running, playing, or simply having conversations. These activities help me maintain a positive mindset and effectively manage stress.
Additionally, I derive great benefits from helping others and witnessing their smiles. I also appreciate the beauty of nature, like the way butterflies land on flowers or the scent of rain in the air. The serenity of nature and the joy of spending time with loved ones bring me a sense of peace and fulfillment. Engaging in activities that promote physical well-being, such as running or playing with my children, not only boosts my mood but also helps me stay grounded. Moreover, the simple act of helping others and witnessing their happiness brings me immense satisfaction and contributes to my overall mental well-being. As I embrace the beauty of aging, I am constantly reminded of the miracles that surround us. From the vibrant colors of a sunset to the laughter of children, these small moments remind me to appreciate the present and find joy in the everyday. As I grow older, I have come to value the wisdom and experiences that come with age, allowing me to navigate life's challenges with grace and resilience.
Michael Rudometkin Memorial Scholarship
I define selflessness as encompassing the ability to prioritize the needs and well-being of others above my own self-interests. It involves me displaying empathy, compassion, and integrity, with a genuine desire to positively impact the lives of those around us. Selflessness can take various forms, such as acts of kindness, charitable endeavors, and emotional support which as I grow seems to be something quite hard to find. Embodying selflessness is a transformative journey for anyone who puts in heart and soul, enriching both our own lives and the lives of those around us. By cultivating empathy, engaging in acts of kindness, giving back to our communities, and building meaningful relationships, I like to embark on a path of personal growth and contribute to a more compassionate and interconnected world. I continuously strive to embody selflessness, finding fulfillment in watching humanity bloom.
What has inspired me to take action when feeling selflessness has been not growing up with everyday essential things that we take for granted most days. From the loss of my mother at a young age to growing up in a home full of siblings that couldn't always be provided for, clothes that fit or even as small as having someone to talk to, that made me want to help others so no one would have to experience the pain that often accompanies these situations. I believe everyone has a right to feel cared for and significant even though life struggles make us forget along the way, sometimes we need to be reminded.
I aim to personify selflessness by assisting those in need and making a positive impact on their lives. I intend to pay forward in my community by volunteering service to foster homes, shelters, and the less fortunate. As I personally know how something so accessible to some, is a luxury to others in need. How helping even with a haircut can restore someone's confidence and outlook on life. As I know how much of a difference these things made in my life I'll be happy to help and spread the joy of finding beauty in ones' self. One instance in which I saw this firsthand was in getting to know clients in cosmetology class.
I had the opportunity to assist an elderly client who was neglected by others due to her unpleasant odor and unkempt appearance. It was disheartening to witness people charging exorbitant fees or reacting negatively towards her. Despite her unappealing condition, I was glad to offer my help as I believe no human should be shunned for their misfortunes that they cannot help. Upon conversing with her, I discovered that she lived alone and had recently undergone surgery on her elbow, which prevented her from showering or changing clothes for over two months. Additionally, she was experiencing mental distress. I provided her with guidance and recommended resources for food, psychological and household assistance. Furthermore, I spent five hours untangling her matted hair, braiding it to make it more manageable, and offered to wash and braid her long hair on a weekly basis. This transformation boosted her confidence and encouraged her to seek further support. It saddened me to witness the lack of assistance she received as a hoarder who slept on the side of a couch. Consequently, I began offering free hair services to individuals in similar situations. Since then, I have acquired multiple clients, including children. This experience has taught me the profound impact that a meaningful conversation and a simple hair transformation can have on individuals, particularly when approached without judgment and with genuine care and interest in their well-being.

My name is Courtney Thompson Meador, I'm currently twenty-five and enrolled in Ranger College as a Cosmetology student. In my life experience, most things that might seem common to others were considered a luxury in my upbringing. Unfortunately, I lost my mother early in life due to a break-in and my grandfather had adopted and raised me along with my siblings. Although my grandfather was a strong man, I never truly knew the kind warmness and unconditional compassion many effortlessly had around them with their mother figure. With so many of us, having something to call my own was very rare but I found comfort in helping my family find beauty in themselves. From hairstyling for my sisters to finding natural remedies to helping my older siblings with skincare, I've always had a passion for helping those who can't help themselves. Growing up, such things were seen as "rich people stuff" as we couldn't afford to even have basic skincare treatments or even a haircut. I have been through many obstacles that 600 words couldn't be enough to express my whole story. At my age, I have battled cancer, had multiple heart surgeries, endured lupus, fell into a coma and learned to walk again. Thankfully, these trials have only made my drive for a better life stronger and have taught me many valuable lessons on how to adapt and overcome.
I'm excited to see the steps I've taken to finally live out my dream as an esthetician, taking fruition. It has been a challenge as a single mother of two but now it's as if I see the light at the end of the tunnel once I graduate and receive my cosmetology license! I am committed to expanding my knowledge and skills through continuing education, as I've learned it's crucial to stay updated with the latest advancements in the esthetics industry. By actively seeking out opportunities for professional development, such as attending workshops, conferences, and specialized courses, I've enhanced my expertise and want to offer my clients a wide range of advanced esthetic treatments. After a bit of further "on-the-field experience," I intend to open up my salon where not only will my skills come into play, but I'll also have the opportunity to help those who struggle with themselves. I've come to find that many clients come to ease their minds and some only can then, sometimes for weeks. Acknowledging this, I've learned that every service matters and helping clients talk things out is also important for physical health as well as mental. These things that trouble them or they suppress, are sometimes the very things that cause an issue to their bodies such as skin and hair health.
With a strong desire to excel in my field, I aspire to become an expert in advanced esthetic techniques, pursuing specializations that allow me to provide cutting-edge services. Through continuous learning, networking, and embracing lifelong personal and professional growth, I am confident that I can establish a successful esthetics practice and make a significant impact in the industry. As a licensed esthetician, my career aspirations would go beyond providing basic skincare treatments, I intend to pay forward in my community by volunteering service to foster homes, shelters, and the less fortunate. As I know how something so accessible to some, is a luxury to others in need. How helping even with a haircut can restore someone's confidence and outlook on life. As I know how much of a difference these things made in my life I'll be happy to help and spread the joy of finding beauty in ones' self.

My name is Courtney Thompson Meador, I'm 25 and currently enrolled in Ranger College as a Cosmetology student. I'm happy to say I've taken steps to finally live out my dream, as hairdressing is something I've always been passionate about. In my life, I had felt like everyday had been an obstacle but thankfully have overcome each and everyday. Growing up, life seemed like a constant struggle as I lost my mom early in life due to a break in and my grandfather had adopted and raised me since I was 6 weeks old. While he did the best he could, life seemed unfair with never having a motherly figure around. Everyone seemed to have someone with unconditional compassion around them and I hardly knew that. Although I often felt cheated and as though life was cruel, I did what I could to be strong for my siblings. Thankfully, these trials have only made my drive for a better life stronger and have taught me many valuable lessons on how to adapt and overcome.
I've learned to value the smallest things as growing up with four siblings there was often not enough to go around and we didn't grow up in the best circumstances. Having lost most of our treasures in a house fire, we had very little to hold dear to us but each other. My grandfather, who I now call my dad, inspired me to work hard and always succeed and find the good in all situations. My dad was single the entire time, showing me true strength in being a single parent that made me work harder than most kids.
Despite unfortunate events, I graduated high school and became a mom to two wonderful children. Maxdon, my first born, is six, and Eliseo, is two. They have been my sole inspiration to see beauty and love in life. Unfortunately, I went through many tribulations with their father, as home was not a loving and peaceful setting, and finally found help. The Ark of domestic violence center helped me to find the resources to get away from him and start trying to build a safe and better life for my kids and I.
Although these last years have been tough, I had to restart my life after COVID ended up putting me in a coma and I had to learn to walk again. I was on a ventalator for almost two weeks and it damaged my heart to where I could hardly move much. However, as of October of 2021, I ended up having a successful heart surgery making it where I feel better and have more energy than ever before. Ever since surgery, I have been able to run with the kids and the best time feeling like a good mother able to keep up with them.
I believe the Barbara J. DeVaney Memorial scholarship could not only change my life, but that of my family's as well so I can achieve my dream in one day running my own hair salon and finally pay back my father for all he has sacrficed for me and give my children the opportunities they deserve and don't have to go through the same struggles as I did. I hope to inspire my children with the strength that my dad showed me so they know, no matter what we go through, we can always work hard and find our way through the darkest of times. I appreciate the time and opportunity to share my story and hope that I can make good use of this honor, if given the chance.
