Without communication, society cannot function. For me, communication is being able to communicate on every level. I want to communicate in ways that appeal to large audiences through technology and presentations. I plan to do this by combining Journalism and Public Interest Communications with Sociology. The two disciplines together will allow me to gain skills to write in a way that will effectively inspire and persuade future audiences.
Professionally, my goal is to become a writer for a nonprofit human rights organization helping the LGBTQ community combat inequality in society. I want to utilize an education in Communications to develop technical writing and media skills. I want to learn how to properly use media to spread impactful information in a way that will educate and persuade audiences. I want to be able to make connections with people and gain skills that allow me to hold on to my own opinions and learn from others. This goal comes from my personal life. When I came out, I lacked LGBTQ resources. I want to create resources for society and my community. The need for fact-based, authentic writing is crucial to disrupt the discrimination my community faces.
My goal is to contribute to changing the world. That only comes when I can effectively interact with people and create meaningful connections in diverse communities. This may seem unattainable, but by combining Sociology and Journalism Communications, I can spread informative knowledge, and enlist change.

One of my passions is writing. Without communication, society cannot function. I want to communicate in ways that appeal to large audiences. I plan to do this by double majoring in Journalism and Public Interest Communications and Sociology. Sociology allows me to understand the interworking of society and what I need to write to demonstrate the inequalities that function in our current society. Together, the two disciplines will allow me to gain skills in writing in a way that will effectively inspire and persuade future audiences.
The University of Washington ranks as one of the top LGBTQ-friendly universities. I fell in love with the school, the campus, and the atmosphere on my first visit. UW has been a welcoming home to me. I do not have to hide who I am. Unfortunately, I knew choosing this out-of-state school would be financially challenging. Thankfully I worked hard during high school and earned many AP credits, and I took classes at my local community college the summer before I started at UW. These things combined allowed me to start my college career as a sophomore and will enable me to complete my degree in three years as a way to keep costs down. I am also working multiple part-time jobs throughout the year to minimize the amount of loans I need to take. Any scholarship I might be fortunate enough to win will help to keep my debt down as well.

First, I had planned to combine Sociology and English, but I realized knowing how to write is not enough to persuade audiences if you don’t have the tools to write in such a manner. This led me to the Communications Department, and ultimately Journalism and Public Interest. Having a strong understanding of analytical style writing has prepared me for the study of Communications by providing me with the skill of uncovering a writer’s purpose. This will help me take the necessary steps to create purpose in my writing. I began this journey in a basic COM class when I learned about rhetorical communication. I can apply rhetoric in my education and career by understanding my audience’s background to write in a way that appeals to their senses and will draw them into the information I present.

When I came out, I lacked LGBTQ resources, so I want to create resources for society and my community. The need for fact-based, authentic writing is crucial to disrupt the discrimination my community faces.
My goal is to contribute to changing the world, but that only comes when I can effectively interact with people and create meaningful connections in diverse communities. This may seem unattainable, but by combining Sociology and Journalism Communications, I can spread informative knowledge, and I can enlist change.

Without communication, society cannot function. For me, communication is about being able to communicate on every level. I want to be able to communicate in ways that appeal to large audiences through technology and presentations. I plan to do this by combining Journalism and Public Interest Communications with Sociology. Sociology allows me to understand the interworking of society and what I need to write to demonstrate the inequalities that function in our current society. The two disciplines together will allow me to gain skills to write in a way that will effectively inspire and persuade future audiences.

Any scholarship I may be fortunate enough to win will help to lessen my student loan debt and help to cover my Club Volleyball dues. Volleyball has been a passion of mine for many years so being able to continue to play while attending college keeps me active and happy. I am also fortunate enough to serve on the executive board of the club as the Fundraising Coordinator.

I always acknowledge that I have grown up with an abundance of privilege. I am a white, cisgender girl, with a stable family, in a good community, and I go to one of the best high schools in the country. I know I have faced very little hardship compared to many girls outside of my area or country. However, sometimes I still feel singled out for being a girl. Years ago in gym class, the boys were playing floor hockey, and I wanted to play too. When I asked my gym teacher if I could play, he said “No, I don’t want you to get hurt. Maybe you should cheer for them.” I was a cheerleader at the time, but I also played floor hockey. I am not saying that me playing hockey outside of gym should have allowed me to play, he should have let me play solely for the fact that I wanted to participate. I was eight years old when I first experienced sexism.
This past summer when I worked at my local grocery store, my supervisors told me that I outperformed every other employee that worked outside with me, most of whom were male. Every shift I would be approached by a male customer asking me if I needed help. I understand the notion of asking: a teen, outside in the heat, for six hours a day, but none of my male coworkers were ever asked if they needed help nor were they called “sweetheart” by male customers. They were never asked by female customers why they were out there, and “couldn’t they find a nice, strong young boy to take your spot?”
I will be attending the University of Washington in Seattle this fall. I plan to major in Sociology and minor in English and Gender and Sexuality studies. I have always been interested in the innerworkings of society and why people are the way they are, not from a mental or physical standpoint, but how their morals have been influenced by their world. Beyond that, classes in Gender and Sexuality studies allow me to further grasp how the construction of gender and sexual difference intertwine to create the complexity of society. English is just a subject that I thoroughly enjoy. I love to read and challenge my mind with difficult concepts and texts.
My final goal is to attend law school after my undergraduate. I want to become a Civil Rights lawyer and help individuals who feel they are not being treated with equal respect because of minute difference in race, ethnicity, sexuality, or gender. Down the road, I would also like to start an organization or non-profit that helps young women and children achieve the goals that society holds them back from. I want to create a place where they can feel free to express themselves and expand their mind and body. My dream is to help create a world where no one is told “no” because of insignificant differences that society has deemed inferior.

$1,000 right now will help me save one year of college debt. $1,000 will allow me to take two general education classes at my local community college this summer. Combining these two classes along with the Advanced Placement Credits I have received already and hope to receive after further exams in May will allow me to start my college career as a sophomore and get my Bachelor’s degree in Sociology after three years rather than four which will save me one year of college tuition and debt.
Having minimal debt when completing my undergraduate will put me in a better position to reach my goal of attending law school.
