There are a lot of motivators that make young people do great things, mine just so happens to be my background and my supporters. I grew up on a fifth-generation family farm/ranch, so I've been working with animals since I could walk. Being around animals has led me to become a gentler, loving person who wants to care for and help animals as much as I can. I really enjoy working with animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and swine. The love for cattle of course comes from my family ranch, but my love for working with sheep, goats, and pigs comes from my high school education. During my enrollment in high school, I took an animal science class as a junior and am currently taking a veterinary science class as a senior. These classes were offered through my FFA chapter, in which I am highly involved as our president. My love for working with animals has majorly developed in the past few years due to taking and getting certified in animal science in my junior year of high school, and veterinary science, which of I am still working on, in my senior year. These have taught me more about the proper handling of livestock, vaccine administration, production of goods, and proper guidelines for the treatment of animals. Granted some of these should be common sense to most people who grew up on a farm/ranch, but they were further driven home into me when I saw the effects of improper techniques being used. The reason I want to be a large animal veterinarian is that, simply, I love working with large animals and I want to help my local community by being there for them in their time of need. Large animals, such as pigs, sheep, goats, and cattle, are so amazingly smart and if you work with them all the time, it becomes second nature on how they act. My grandfather always told me that our herd was our family, and if we treat them like family, they will treat us kindly as well. My local community is kind of like my herd of cattle, tight-knit and caring. We look after our neighbors as if they were our own next of kin. Having this relationship with my community, I want to give back by becoming someone they can depend on when they need it. Becoming a large animal veterinarian would allow me to have the education I need to be able to help my neighbors produce high-quality livestock for the consumers. Having this pride of knowing that I was able to exert this influence in my community, which will better the quality of life for that producer, brings me such tremendous joy, and I would love to be able to further my education for that satisfaction.
