Elevate Girl's Wrestling Scholarship
My favorite memory from wrestling would have to be the time that I was able to go help facilitate the largest girl's wrestling camp ever in Iowa City, Iowa. I remember my coaches calling me up one day to talk to me about my summer training plans and my goals for this year. After some time, they invited me to go to a camp that they got invited to coach at in Iowa. With Iowa being one of the biggest wrestling capitals in the USA, I was flattered to be considered. The next week at practice, they rounded up the group of girls that they were taking to the camp and were going over the coaching itinerary for the week of practices to come. I remember how exciting it was to plan for this trip because even though I am a high-level athlete, my self-confidence wasn't as good as it needed to be, so planning for this camp made me feel this sense of worthiness. Once we arrived at the camp, my team quickly realized that the sheer size of the camp was, to say the least, overwhelming, nonetheless, we were ready! The week started strong, all of the girls were excited to be there and were ready to put in the work. The rest of the coaches and I were so excited to provide all of our knowledge and technique to make these girls much better at their craft. I actually found myself becoming better at wrestling just by breaking down the techniques to the basics. The most special part though was about the 3rd day into the 5 day camp, when the girls were sore, tired, and slowing down from fatigue. The practice was going slow and no matter how hard we tried to encourage them to push themselves, they were tired and needed a break. My coach saw this and called all the girls into a huddle. She went over some recovery tips and hydration tips, but at the end of the meeting, she said something that I think about almost daily. "If you come in here and get 1% better, you did your job". This really resonated with me because, personally, it's more of a mental battle than it is a physical battle coming into practice every day trying to push my limits. However, if I'm able to leave every practice at least 1% better, I accomplished what I needed to.
In the middle of practices, my team and I got to train in the Hawkeye Center and be coached by Tom and Terry Brands. I truly found a flow state in which I wasn't feeling or thinking about anything other than the next move, the next shot, the next defense. I often go back to these practices when I'm feeling low on motivation because I had found a new sense of worthiness in that practice room. However, the best part of the trip had to be when the girls wanted me to sign their wrestling bags. I even cried when this one little girl wanted me to sign her wrestling shoe, her dad said that she watched my film all the time and wanted to be just like me. I remember when I was younger and I felt like there were no female wrestlers to look up to. Being able to be a remodel for these girls was exhilarating, to say the least. This trip was truly an amazing experience and I am very grateful that I was invited.
