I blame the invitations, really. I was fifteen when my parents tasked me as the designated "invitation-creator" for various family events, which ranged from birthdays to graduations. I was always interested in designing, as all children were, and I was happy to assist. This miniature act was my first insight into marketing and design, and propelled me into various leadership positions throughout high school.
Assuming leadership roles — such as academic prefect, international prefect, and lead ambassador — clarified my own leadership style and introduced me to the positive impact marketing has on society. The most rewarding experience was planning and advertising the 'International Students Dinner', and then basking in the joy that radiated on the students’ faces as they participated in that night's events. I created a menu based on the theme of "internationalism" and celebrated the range of cultures represented within the school; I focused on the study of diversity. From that experience, I gained essential insight into the intricacies of the marketing and hospitality industry: that satisfaction comes from each customer being treated empathetically. By ensuring that my communication methods feel like they've been created specifically for them, the more they will feel valued.
In its entirety, the marketing industry is saturated with vibrancy, people and impact. During my internship one summer at the St. Regis Hotel, I rotated through different departments and shadowed each department manager to obtain a global view of the workings of a prestigious 6-star hotel. My favorite assignment was the concierge services, where I enjoyed catering to the requests of the hotel guests. I also relished the organized chaos of the front desk. The marketing industry thus offers a fascinating, fast-paced career with an abundance of opportunities for me to make both creative and strategic decisions.
As a student of hospitality, communication skills are key and marketing facilitates this whilst encouraging me to empathise with both my target audience and those around me. I am highly passionate about relationship-building and I enjoy relating to others on an interpersonal level. My experiences in the hospitality sector have also inspired me to learn more about the marketing strategies and tactics that are so vital in assisting firms with driving customer engagement and loyalty. By bringing awareness and consideration of products and services in a creative way, marketing truly drives the success of brands and firms alike. From learning about real estate to human resources, I have established that working in marketing is truly where I want to be. I have always wanted to pursue a path that allows me to express my creative and innovative side in a professional capacity, whilst focusing on customer and technology trends.
As an aspiring Chief Marketing Officer, I strive to acquire the professional skills and sensitivities of marketing that are universally transferable. Whilst I delve deeper into this dynamic industry, I aspire to be an individual who is open to new ideas and concepts, and always willing to adjust my processes and thinking in this ever-changing world.
