As everyone sees me, no one would think hearing my story would make many people shed tears. Growing up I’ve seen and experienced things I should never have. I grew up with an alcoholic and drug addict single mother who usually was never home. At the age of 6 I was the mother to my four-year-old brother, I provided him with everything he needed. I made sure he ate whenever he was hungry, he was clothed and had a way to school. I’ve always been the one to provide or help anyone in need because I grew up with nothing but always giving. My inspiration comes from the thought of being the exception to my family and past generations. I will be the first person in my family to graduate high school and attend college in my biological family. As I mentioned earlier, my childhood wasn’t the best or even close to okay. I was separated from my biological mother after she was charged with attempted murder and went to prison for 4 and a half years for finally defending herself against her abusive so called boyfriend. Throughout that time of their “relationship”, my mom was admitted to the hospital at least one time every week from stabbing wounds, broken bones, and/or receiving some sort of minor surgery from her injury. Up until the age of 9-10 years old I had no father figure, neither did my siblings. We all have different dads, but I was the one taking care of them as their mom & dad for years until we were blessed with our parent figures today.
Although I was in the hospital a lot for not good reasons, it also made me realize that nursing is what I want to pursue. Specifically, I want to be a midwife based on the responsibilities they have, like providing for mothers as much as they can before, during, and after giving birth. Growing up with only younger siblings made me recognize how much helping children or just humans in general made me happy. I want to help as many mothers as possible for them to provide for their child the way I wish I was taken care of. It’s only a bonus that I get to work with babies or just kids in general, I love the company of younger children. As I learned more about the nursing career, I came to think that it has a social worker aspect to it, which I love because they don’t only help humans physically but emotionally and mentally too.
I’m seen as an outgoing, loving, and genuine person by many people. I’m a determined person but also easily emotionally connected, both characteristics are needed as a nurse to be successful. I would make a wonderful and helpful person to have a part of anyone’s healing process. I look to continuing to be the exception to the curse of my biological family. I will be successful in the profession I want to pursue.
