Ever since I was a kid watching the number of people in my family work in the medical field, changing and saving people's lives on a daily basis inspired me to aspire to do the same in my own way. Having a brother in Med School gave me the sort of blueprint to how I would want to go about bringing this idea to reality. I picked Pharmacy largely because talking with him and other people in the community I have come to learn and recognize the disparity when it comes to access to quality prescriptions. Given the dark history between people of the African-American community and medical practitioners as a whole, I think it would be beneficial to have someone they can relate to pushing the motion forward that it is okay to seek out help and they can trust me when it comes to obtaining what doctors tell them will help alleviate their ailments. This stems from my time of service to those in the city of Detroit. Traveling back to Uganda with my family also played a big role in this. Being able to work with various handicapped children exposed me to the reality of health problems in other not so medically abundant countries. So given the opportunity, I would like to start up a pharmacy over there for various small towns that do not necessarily have the means to travel a couple of hours to get quality medicine for themselves. With 1000 I'd accomplish this sooner.

This all of course is years off in the future but it inspires me every day to push and continue to work harder to make it a reality.

It has inspired me to work even harder towards my goals. Seeing the pain within my community reminded me of how many years of distrust have been built up within it across the board. From the justice system to the medical field, the black community has been wronged in ways that can never be forgiven. However, it is on us as a people to make a change, and I realized that the best way for that to happen is for each person to take it upon themselves and change first. Adversity: difficulties; misfortune. There has not been a time in the history of this nation we live in that a person of color has not faced a situation of such description. The system we are currently thriving in was built so that we would not even be able to survive in it, and the ramifications from the decisions made by men long since passed still affect us as a people to this day. Growing up in the city of Detroit where people are often told they will never amount to anything is only one of the obstacles faced by people that look like me. A black man in society always must work twice as hard as anyone else if he wants a seat at the table and being the son of two immigrant parents has only made that fire inside of me to be great burn brighter. Bold Helping Others Scholarship
My favorite way to help people is through listening and being present. I think this is one of the simplest things that everyone can do that has such a large impact. As we have found a way to persist through this ongoing pandemic, I have seen more and more people around me struggling from sadness, pain, and anxiety. The internal and external battles that we have had to face during these past few years have continued to build on each other and have left us feeling as though we are going through it alone. At my school, we tragically lost 2 students within a 3 month timespan to suicide - reflecting a weight of despair that many of us walk with everyday. But I am always reminded how powerful we can be when we show up for each other - in the mundane, everyday moments. Being present and lending a caring ear to everyone that I meet beings me so much joy because it validates the other person’s feeling, experiences, and existence. It is a way of carrying that hurt and pain away from them in that moment to allow them to let their guard down and lift their hearts up. This is so powerful to me because I have been on the other side of it - experiencing deep sadness, but feeling uplifted by someone genuinely being there for me without me even knowing I needed it. I also love that I am able to contribute this type of service through my friend’s “Be Kind” initiative - where we radically work to create spaces where students can be open, vulnerable, and loved. We all have the power to be present and to listen fully, and it is my favorite way to help others.
