One of the most significant challenges I faced growing up was the instability and neglect caused by my birth mother's mental health issues. My mother, Kim, struggled with severe mental health problems, which affected her ability to provide a stable and nurturing environment for my sister and me. This instability was compounded when my father, Ronell, left us, leaving my mother to fend for herself. Eventually, my grandmother, whom I affectionately call Granny, stepped in and adopted my sister and me, providing the stability and support we desperately needed.
Living in a chaotic environment made it difficult to focus on education and personal growth. There were times when basic necessities like food and clean living conditions were not guaranteed. However, my Granny's unwavering support and love helped me realize the importance of education and perseverance. Despite the hardships, I remained determined to succeed academically and break the cycle of instability that plagued my early years.
My involvement with the greater community has been driven by my desire to give back and help others who face similar challenges. At Morehouse College, where I am a rising sophomore and an Oprah Winfrey Scholar, I have taken on various roles that allow me to contribute to my community. I am actively involved in the CAU Panther, Clark Atlanta TV, the Morehouse Writing and Thinking Society, the Spelman Cosmetics Society, and the AUC swim club. These organizations provide me with platforms to support my peers, share knowledge, and foster a sense of community.
One of the most impactful ways I contribute is through my work as an English tutor for Tutorax. Helping students improve their literacy skills is incredibly rewarding, as I know firsthand the power of education in transforming lives. My commitment to academic excellence and mentorship reflects my desire to see others succeed and break free from cycles of hardship.
My educational goals are deeply intertwined with my commitment to driving change in my community. I aspire to become a journalist, focusing on social justice and mental health issues. By shedding light on critical topics and advocating for marginalized communities, I hope to drive meaningful change and foster greater understanding and empathy in society. My involvement in campus media organizations has given me the skills and experience needed to tell compelling stories that can influence public opinion and policy.
In addition to my professional aspirations, I plan to remain actively engaged in volunteer work. Whether it involves organizing community events, mentoring young people, or offering mindfulness workshops, I aim to be a consistent and positive presence in my community. Buddhism, which has been a guiding force in my life, teaches that our actions can create ripples of positive change. I am committed to living out this principle by continuously contributing to the well-being of those around me.
I hope to inspire others by sharing my journey and the impact. Through storytelling and advocacy, I aspire to be a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change.
Overcoming the challenge of a tumultuous upbringing has fueled my determination to succeed and give back to my community. My experiences have shaped my educational goals and commitment to social justice, driving me to use my skills and knowledge to create positive change. As I continue my journey at Morehouse College and beyond, I remain dedicated to making a meaningful impact on the world, honoring the values that have guided me thus far.
Black Leaders Scholarship
In honor of Black History Month, I am proud to reflect on the profound influence of Oprah Winfrey, a trailblazing leader whose impact on my life and countless others cannot be overstated. Oprah's journey from humble beginnings to becoming a global icon of media, philanthropy, and empowerment embodies the resilience, determination, and compassion that I strive to emulate in my own life.
Oprah Winfrey's early life was marked by adversity. Born into poverty in rural Mississippi, she faced numerous challenges, including a turbulent family environment and significant personal trauma. Despite these hardships, Oprah's indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to education propelled her forward. She excelled academically and earned a scholarship to Tennessee State University, where she began her career in media.
Oprah's rise to prominence as the host of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" revolutionized the television industry. Her empathetic and authentic interviewing style created a platform where people from all walks of life could share their stories. Oprah's ability to connect with her audience on a deeply personal level not only made her show immensely popular but also fostered a sense of community and understanding among viewers. She tackled taboo subjects, promoted self-improvement, and highlighted social issues, making her show a powerful force for positive change.
Beyond her television career, Oprah's philanthropic efforts have had a lasting impact on countless lives. She established the Oprah Winfrey Foundation and the Oprah Winfrey Operating Foundation, which have donated millions of dollars to educational initiatives, disaster relief, and programs that support women and children in need. Her commitment to education is particularly inspiring; the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa is a testament to her belief in the transformative power of education. By providing young girls with the opportunity to learn and grow, Oprah has empowered a new generation of leaders who will continue to create positive change in their communities.
As an Oprah Winfrey Scholar at Morehouse College, I have been directly impacted by Oprah's legacy of generosity and commitment to education. The scholarship has not only provided me with financial support but has also connected me with a network of mentors and resources that have been instrumental in my personal and academic growth. Oprah's dedication to uplifting others has inspired me to pursue my own path with the same level of passion and purpose.
Oprah's influence extends beyond her professional achievements; her personal philosophy of self-empowerment and mindfulness has deeply resonated with me. Her teachings on the importance of self-awareness, gratitude, and living a life of purpose have guided me through many challenges. Oprah's ability to turn her pain into power and use her platform for the greater good has shown me that it is possible to overcome adversity and make a meaningful impact on the world.
In my own life, I strive to honor Oprah's legacy by actively contributing to my community and advocating for social justice. As a journalist, I aim to use my voice to highlight underrepresented stories and drive positive change, much like Oprah has done throughout her career. My involvement in various campus organizations and volunteer work reflects my commitment to service and empowerment.
Oprah Winfrey's life and work have been a profound source of inspiration for me. Her resilience, compassion, and dedication to uplifting others embody the values that I hold dear. As I continue my journey at Morehouse College, I am committed to carrying forward her legacy of empowerment, education, and social change. Oprah Winfrey is not just a historical figure; she is a living testament to the power of determination and the impact one person can have on the world.

Growing up, my background was marked by instability and challenges that shaped my character and aspirations. Born to a teenage mother, Kim, who struggled with mental health issues, I experienced a childhood filled with uncertainty. My father, Ronell, eventually left us, and we were forced to live in poor conditions until my grandmother, whom I affectionately call Granny, took us in and later adopted my sister and me. Granny's unwavering support and love provided the stable home we desperately needed.
My upbringing instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility towards my family and community. From a young age, I took on roles that contributed to the well-being of those around me. At home, I helped Granny with household chores and cared for my younger sister, ensuring she had the support I often lacked. These experiences taught me the importance of family, resilience, and compassion.
As I grew older, my sense of duty extended beyond my family to my broader community. At Morehouse College, where I am a rising sophomore and an Oprah Winfrey Scholar, I actively participate in various organizations that allow me to give back. I am involved in the CAU Panther, Clark Atlanta TV, the Morehouse Writing and Thinking Society, the Spelman Cosmetics Society, and the AUC swim club. Each of these roles provides me with opportunities to support my peers, share knowledge, and foster a sense of community.
Looking ahead, I plan to maintain and expand my community involvement post-college. My goal is to pursue a career in journalism, focusing on social justice and mental health issues. By shedding light on critical topics and advocating for marginalized communities, I hope to drive meaningful change and foster greater understanding and empathy in society.
Beyond my professional aspirations, I intend to remain actively engaged in volunteer work.
In summary, my background has shaped me into a resilient, compassionate, and driven individual dedicated to supporting my family and community. My experiences have fueled my commitment to social justice, education, and service. My relationship with Buddhism has been a cornerstone of my life, shaping my values, goals, and aspirations. Buddhism's emphasis on mindfulness, compassion, and the interconnectedness of all beings resonates deeply with me and has guided me through many of life's challenges.
Growing up in a tumultuous environment, I sought solace and stability in Buddhism's teachings. The practice of mindfulness helped me navigate the chaos around me, providing a sense of peace and clarity amidst uncertainty. Meditation became a daily ritual, allowing me to center myself and find inner calm. These practices have not only helped me cope with difficult circumstances but have also fostered a deep sense of empathy and compassion for others.
Buddhism has significantly influenced my future goals, particularly my commitment to social justice and community service. The principle of "right action" has inspired me to pursue a career in journalism, where I aim to highlight stories of underrepresented communities and advocate for social change. As an Oprah Winfrey Scholar at Morehouse College, I have been given a platform to amplify these voices and bring attention to critical issues.
My Buddhist faith also emphasizes the importance of education and personal growth. This belief has driven me to excel academically and seek opportunities for continuous learning. Being involved in various organizations at Morehouse, such as the CAU Panther, Clark Atlanta TV, and the Morehouse Writing and Thinking Society, allows me to develop my skills and use my talents to benefit others. Buddhism teaches that personal enlightenment is not just for oneself but should be used to help others achieve the same.
Upon graduating, I hope to give back to my community by using my education and experiences to effect positive change. I plan to work as a journalist focusing on social justice issues, particularly those related to mental health and education. I believe that by shedding light on these critical topics, I can help foster understanding and compassion in society.
In addition to my professional aspirations, I aim to be actively involved in community service. Whether through volunteering at local shelters, mentoring young students, or organizing mindfulness workshops, I want to contribute to the well-being of my community. Buddhism teaches that our actions, no matter how small, can create ripples of positive change. I am committed to living out this principle in my everyday life.
Moreover, I hope to inspire others by sharing my journey and the impact Buddhism has had on my life. I believe that by being open about my faith and how it has guided me, I can encourage others to explore mindfulness and compassion in their own lives. Through storytelling and advocacy, I aspire to be a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change.
In conclusion, my relationship with Buddhism has profoundly shaped my future goals and aspirations. It has instilled in me a sense of purpose, compassion, and a commitment to social justice. As I continue my journey at Morehouse College and beyond, I am dedicated to using my education and experiences to give back to my community and make a positive impact on the world.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Growing up with a family that cares and supports you is crucial for raising children. However, not all parents are able to provide this, and many children around the world find themselves in terrible family situations. If my birth mother, Kim, had gotten her way, I would have been one of those children.
When I was born, Kim was nineteen, without a high school diploma, no money, and wholly dependent on my father, Ronell, for everything. He always gave in to her demands. Two years later, Kim had a daughter with another man, though she claimed it was Ronell’s child. We lived in a condo that was barely suitable for adults, let alone children. My sister and I often sat in filth, and there was rarely any food. Eventually, Ronell had enough and kicked Kim, my sister, and me out of the house. He moved on to create his own family, leaving us behind.
With nowhere else to go and the state government threatening to take us away, Kim turned to her grandmother, whom I call Granny. Granny tried her best to help Kim by providing a room in her house, enrolling her in a high school equivalent program, and supporting me and my sister. Despite Granny's efforts, Kim had only a few weeks to prove to the state of Michigan that she could be a good mother. Unfortunately, Kim's mental health issues prevented her from wanting to fix her life, and she lost custody of us. At that point, my Granny stepped in and adopted my sister and me, providing the stable home and love that we desperately needed.
Witnessing my mother’s struggles with mental health deeply impacted me. It instilled in me a determination to succeed and break the cycle of instability that plagued my early years. This experience has profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world.
The tumultuous environment I grew up in motivated me to strive for a better future. I saw education as the key to escaping the cycle of poverty and instability. This led me to Morehouse College, where I am currently a rising sophomore and an Oprah Winfrey Scholar. The scholarship is not just a financial aid; it is a symbol of my commitment to academic excellence and social responsibility. The program has connected me with mentors and resources that have been instrumental in my personal and academic growth.
At Morehouse, I am involved in several organizations, including the CAU Panther, Clark Atlanta TV, the Morehouse Writing and Thinking Society, the Spelman Cosmetics Society, and the AUC swim club. Each of these activities allows me to develop different facets of my personality and skills. My experience with my mother’s mental health issues has made me resilient and driven, qualities that help me excel in these roles.
My early experiences taught me the importance of supportive relationships. The instability and neglect I faced made me value the few stable relationships I had, particularly with my Granny. These experiences have made me a compassionate and empathetic friend, always willing to lend a listening ear or a helping hand.
However, my past also made me cautious in forming new relationships. I have a heightened awareness of the potential for instability and disappointment. This awareness initially made it difficult to trust others, but over time, I learned to balance caution with openness. My involvement in various campus organizations has helped me build a strong support network, which is crucial for my mental well-being and success.
Growing up in a challenging environment gave me a unique perspective on the world. I understand that mental health issues can devastate individuals and their families. This understanding has fueled my passion for journalism, particularly in covering stories related to mental health and social justice. As a member of the CAU Panther and Clark Atlanta TV, I aim to use my platform to raise awareness about these critical issues and advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves.
My experiences have also made me acutely aware of the systemic issues that contribute to mental health problems. I have seen firsthand how poverty, lack of education, and inadequate support systems can create a cycle of despair. This awareness drives me to succeed not just for myself but to be a catalyst for change in my community.
In conclusion, my experiences with mental health have profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. They have made me resilient, driven, and compassionate. As an Oprah Winfrey Scholar at Morehouse College, I am committed to using my education and experiences to make a positive impact on the world. My mother's struggles with mental health were a catalyst for my determination to succeed, and they continue to inspire me to strive for excellence and advocate for change.
Delories Thompson Scholarship
Growing up in Fraser, Michigan, an overwhelmingly white town, I often felt disconnected from my heritage. My understanding of black culture was limited to what I could find on my own, as it was seldom reflected in my surroundings. This isolation fostered a deep desire within me to explore and connect with my roots, leading me to choose Morehouse College for my higher education.
Being a freshman at Morehouse College has been a transformative experience. Atlanta is a community that celebrates and cultivates black excellence, I have gained a profound appreciation for my culture. Morehouse has not only educated me academically but has also nurtured my identity and reinforced my commitment to uplifting my community.
As an Oprah Winfrey Endowed Scholar, I am inspired by her legacy of using storytelling to foster understanding and drive change. My future ambition is to become a journalist, with a focus on empowering black voices and telling stories that matter. With a degree in English, I aim to work in journalism, using my platform to advocate for underrepresented communities and end issues that impact us.
Attending Morehouse and being an Oprah Winfrey Scholar has equipped me with the tools, confidence, and network necessary to pursue my journalistic aspirations. It has deepened my understanding of my identity and my commitment to making a positive impact. My journey from Fraser to Morehouse has solidified my dedication to contributing positively to society and to honoring the legacy of resilience, strength, and creativity that defines the black experience.

Growing up with a family that cares and supports you is a must when it comes to raising children. Not all parents aren’t able to provide for their kids. The harsh reality is that many children all over the world are put in terrible family situations. If my birth mom, Kim, got what she wanted, this would include me.
When I was born, Kim was nineteen, with no high school diploma, no money, and clinging to my father, Ronell, for support for everything in her life. He always gave in. Fast-forward two years and Kim has a daughter with a second guy. She doesn’t remember the second guy, so she plays it off as Ronell’s child. At this point, they lived in a condo with OK conditions for adults. However, these conditions were terrible for children. Me and my sister were sitting in filth all the time. There was never any food. Well, no food humans could eat. Eventually, Ronell had enough. He kicked Kim, my one-year-old sister, and me out of the house. of our Granny. Over the next few years, Kim had several other children, hoping to keep at least one. Fortunately, she wasn’t able to. My grandmother adopted as many of my siblings as she could. Living with me now, I have two brothers and two sisters. I kind of gave my Granny a hard time growing up. I wasn’t a good kid, and she didn’t deserve that. But when she died in 2021 from coronavirus. It absolutely broke me, and I fell into a deep depression, giving up on almost everything.
My Granny would have hated this behavior. I couldn’t just shut down.

Kim only had mere weeks to prove to the government that she was a good mother. My grandmother did as much as she could, but Kim herself didn’t want to fix her life.
We were taken from her, and my grandmother adopted us. Over the next few years, Kim had several other children, hoping to keep at least one. Fortunately, she wasn’t able to. I gave my Granny a hard time growing up. I wasn’t a good kid, she didn’t deserve that. But when she died from coronavirus. It broke me, and I fell into a deep depression, giving up on almost everything.
My Granny hated this behavior. I couldn’t just shut down.
Education’s very important to me, as knowing how things work in society can get you very far in life. Kim hasn’t even this point in her educational career. Maybe I’m trying to prove something to myself, but this drives me to do my best at anything I do, with double the tenacity.

My personal American Dream is always changing. It never stays the same. But one constant thing remains in each change: No matter what I do, I want to make a positive impact. Leave a legacy.
English and writing have always been my strengths. Fragments of stories and scenarios play in my head almost all the time. Sometimes, they’ll be written down. With my head brimming with ideas, I started writing my first book, Fire and Ice, at the end of eighth grade. This was a fantasy novel, influenced by moments in pop culture, such as vampires from the Twilight franchise, angels from the Shadowhunters television show, and witches from Sabrina. I had hopes of developing Fire and Ice into a series eventually, inspiring people everywhere.

Growing up in a single-parent household presents many challenges, and I have had to overcome several obstacles to become the person I am today. Despite these challenges, sports have had a profound impact on my life and have helped me to develop skills that have served me well both on and off the field.
One of the primary obstacles I have faced is financial instability. Being raised by a single parent means that there is often only one source of income to support the entire family. This can make it difficult to afford basic necessities, let alone extracurricular activities like sports. I have had to rely on scholarships and financial aid to be able to participate in sports, which has required a lot of effort and dedication on my part.
Another challenge that comes with growing up in a single-parent household is the lack of a strong support system. Without a second parent in the picture, there is often less emotional and practical support available. This can make it harder to stay motivated and focused on my goals. However, my involvement in sports has provided me with a sense of community and belonging that has helped to fill this gap. Being part of a team has allowed me to develop strong relationships with my coaches and teammates, who have provided me with encouragement and support both on and off the field.
One of the biggest ways that sports have impacted my life is by teaching me important life skills. Through sports, I have learned the value of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. I have learned to set goals for myself and to work tirelessly to achieve them, even in the face of obstacles and setbacks. These skills have served me well both in my academic pursuits and in my personal life, and I know that I will continue to rely on them as I move forward in life.
Sports have also taught me the importance of teamwork and collaboration. Being part of a team requires communication, cooperation, and mutual respect. These skills have helped me to be a better leader and to work effectively with others, both in my personal and professional life. I know that I can rely on these skills to help me succeed in any future endeavors.
In addition to teaching me valuable life skills, sports have also provided me with a sense of purpose and direction. When I am on the field, I feel like I am doing something that matters. I am contributing to a greater goal, and I know that my efforts are making a difference. This sense of purpose has helped me to stay focused on my goals and to stay motivated even when things get tough.
In conclusion, growing up in a single-parent household has presented many challenges, but sports have helped me to overcome them and to develop valuable skills that have served me well in all aspects of my life. Through sports, I have learned the value of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. I have learned to work effectively with others, and I have found a sense of community and belonging that has helped me to stay motivated and focused on my goals. I am proud of what I have accomplished, and I know that sports will continue to play an important role in my life as I move forward.
