Hello! My husband, stepdaughter and myself just moved from Michigan to Connecticut last year. It has been a difficult transition, moving away from all our friends and family. After arriving to CT I was told my Opticianry certification was not all I needed to work as a dispensing optician. I need a 2-year degree and another national board test. I have played with the idea of going back to school for awhile but I couldn’t get out of my comfort zone after moving and missing home. I decided to try to go early this year, but I was faced with losing my baby sister to suicide and had to put everything on hold during such a difficult time. I am just now starting to get out of my “funk” and am trying to better my life in her honor.

Despite being very nearsighted, I never thought I would find a career in optical. My whole life, due to my nature, I was told I had to be a nurse or a caregiver. I burned myself out for years until I hurt my shoulder. I felt lost thinking I would have to start all over in a new field, and I did.
I got lucky and was hired without experience at an optical shop in Michigan. I instantly fell in love, it ignited my love for human interaction and education. Since that day 7 years ago, I have loved every minute of it. I have worked for both corporations and private practices, in management as well as being part of new hire development. I have built relationships with multiple Optometrists, Ophalmologists, seasoned opticians and practice owners and have learned many of the ins and outs of the optical field.
In my 7 years working in this field I have learned that not all things are by the book. I tell everyone that my knowledge is 40% from studying and 60% from making mistakes and learning from them. My favorite part of the job is working with patients who believed they could never be satisfied. I love taking something difficult and challenging and turning into trust building. My patients have always appreciated my thorough problem solving skills and utilizing all of my resources.
I received my ABOC in 2018 and thought that was all I needed for my career. We recently moved across the country, to Connecticut, where I started working as a sole optican in a private practice. I am responsible for 100% of the work to run the optical side of the business. In this, I have learned about the business management side of my field. I have built new relationships with frame representatives and labs who make our lenses. I discovered that in Connecticut you have to have a 2 year degree and ABO/ NCLE, so I decided to go back to school to get my degree!
I have a lot to be greatful for because of this job. I have learned so many things and continue to learn every day, I have made lifelong friends, stepped outside of my comfort zone and opened up, I even found my husband. I am thankful for all that it has given me and I want to give back. By going back to school I can gain the knowledge and accolades I need in order to be able to give 100% and continue to be the best at what I do.
