When I was a freshman there were three suicide deaths of my classmates all within the same year, and this rocked my world. I had never before experienced much death and certainly not this type of tragedy. My eyes were opened, for the first time, to the dangers of mental health. I became more sensitive to mental health, my own and that of others. I was more conscious of the people I loved and those I did not know, I started looking for the subtle signs that told me when people were not okay.
As a student who hopes to enter the medical field, I know that I can have a great impact on others' mental health. I would like to become a pediatrician one day, which means that I will come in contact with children every day and I can be the first line of defense I will have the opportunity to notice when something is wrong and provide the help that they need. Becoming a doctor will put me on the path to meeting a lot of different people from all walks of life armed with the skills and knowledge to help them. I plan to take advantage of this, I will not rush examinations, and I will not miss the signs.
I want to carry myself in such a way that radiates kindness to all I come in contact with. I never want to be a source of pain or irritation to anyone, never a reason that someone's mental health deteriorates. I will use all that I know, all my experiences and all that I will learn, to better the world around me. I know that we must all take what we are given and make a difference, and I plan to do just that. I know that being a doctor means more than just caring for the physical ailments of my patients, but also caring for the unseen sources of pain like mental health.
I know that I cannot change every problem in our world, but I do know that I can have a massive impact on the world around me. I can help those in my immediate circle because every single person is worth it. No one deserves to suffer, and no one deserves to suffer alone. I may not be able to save a thousand or even a hundred people who are hurting, but one is enough. If I can help just one person, it will all be worth it, I will have lived a life worth living.
