I immigrated from Nigeria, a country where there is no value for educating the girl child. Prior to coming to the United States, I have always wanted to be educationally accomplished, hence my venture into becoming a registered nurse. I came here with a big dream but little to no financial ability to pursue my dreams. But I am proof that where there is a will, there is a way. I am proud of how much I have accomplished in very little time and I know the best is yet to come.

Dashanna K. McNeil Memorial Scholarship
I immigrated from Nigeria, a country where there is little to no value for educating the girl child. Prior to coming to the United States, I have always wanted to be educationally accomplished irrespective of my socio cultural believe about not educating the girl child, hence my venture into becoming a registered nurse. Although, on this path of becoming a registered nurse, I have been dropped out of classes by the school because of my inability to meet up with the financial deadlines associated with my classes. Amidst all these, I have never given up on my dreams. I came to the United States with a big dream and the enthusiasm of changing the norms of my cultural background by my pursuit of academic achievements. Though not financially capable of solely achieving this on my own, hence the Dashanna K. McNeil Memorial Scholarship application. Being a Dashanna K. McNeil Memorial Scholar based on my academic achievements and determination will be proof that my hard work despite my challenges paid off. I currently do not have any financial aid or assistance and paying out of pocket for my classes towards achieving my desired career goals.
I grew up watching my Mother who is a Nurse care for people both at hospitals and homes, I grew up knowing what it means and takes to be compassionate and empathic to people and their needs. For this reason, I ventured into caring for people through a Non for Profit Organization I worked with back in my home country Nigeria where I cared for the Orphans and Vulnerable Children as well as Positive Living People. I got some form of training on palliative care to aid the sick among them. I have on several occasions been advised to take one step further to professionally advance my passion which I constantly declined because of the financial involvements required to achieve my goals. I looked beyond these and took a bold step in achieving my goal of being a registered nurse. Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing has always been an area of specialization I hold so dear to my heart. Coming from a society where the girl child is marginalized, having little or no say in the society regarding their health and rights, I chose to be among the few that advocated for the girls in my Community. Going into this career specialization will help me continue to use my gift towards the vulnerable girls and women of my society. Every individual has a gift and talent that can make a lasting impact. However, only a minority of people utilize those gifts and talents to live to their full potential.

The Certificate isn't mine but my spouses Doctorate from Walden University. This is my inspiration and motivation to pursue and be educationally accomplished. This picture for me is a constant reminder that I have to put in my very best to achieve my dreams. It is a placeholder for me and I believe I will eventually hold up that which is truly mine and replace this picture with mine someday. A journey of a thousand miles begin with a step!
