Live Music Lover Scholarship
Growing up my mom and bonus dad have always gone to concerts. I would always here their stories about how they had a great time and listened to their favorite bands. I have a vast array of music interests and it is still ever evolving. My first concert was Motley Crue when my mom was still pregnant with me, she was with my biological father at the time and that was his favorite band. Although I don't recall this concert it's still fun to hear about the experience my mom had.
As I started growing older, I was finally ready to experience my very first live concert with my parents. So, my mom and bonus dad took me to see the 90's House Party concert in Maryland Heights, MO in 2018. It was a cold dreary day and we had actual seats to sit in and didn't have to sit in the lawn. I got to experience the music my parents grew up on. Now of course I have always heard the songs that were played at the concert, just never really put two and two together that this was music for my parents when they were younger. Hearing Tone Loc, Coolio and Vanilla Ice was just an experience in itself.
Music has always been a part of my life, it's almost a memory keeper if you will. A song comes on and you may be really going through something, or it could be the best day ever. So later on in life you hear that song, and it brings those memories back to the surface whether they were great or the worst. So now when those songs from the concert I went to with my parents come on the radio or my mom randomly wants to have a dance party in the car, they remind me of that experience with them. The joy I felt and the feeling of the air, the smells, the static charge of everyone's happiness hearing the music. Since that day I have went on to see other concerts and even saw Metallica which is my mom's all-time favorite band. There are two more concerts that I am going to this year with my parents, and I can't wait for the feeling again when the music is played live.
Thank you for your consideration and hope that my concert experience was enough for me to be awarded for your scholarship opportunity. This would help me so much toward furthering my education.

Growing up my uncle on my dad's side was a detective as well as my grandpa on my stepdad's side who was a chief of police. Having them both in law enforcement has impacted my life. Their work that they have done and their contributions to the communities they worked in has shown me a lot through the years. My uncle is no longer in law enforcement, but my grandpa made strides in his community for over 20 years and retired from being chief. All through the years when he would campaign for chief when election year came up, he would personally walk door to door in the town and take time out of his week to speak to the residents of the community. He participated in many charitable fundraisers, made sure his officers and other various staff were always home for the holidays with their families. He would be the one on duty to relieve his staff even after he had already put in his time and then some. He made sure documentation was completed and thorough. He was always there when there were busts or other various incidents, made the paper several times as well as live interviews. He was a pillar of the community and made great strides to keep his town safe. When he finally retired as chief, he took a break for about a month and then he missed being on the force. He sought out a job with the humane society in St Louis, MO. This came from him also many years ago having a drug dog and his love for helping animals. So now all though he retired, he now works all over the state of Missouri helping the humane society with taking down puppy mills and assisting with surrendering animals. So, all in all, my grandpa is my inspiration on making a difference and being helpful for any community I land in. I am attending Maryville University St. Louis to pursue my college career in criminology/criminal justice. I want my future kids to know how hard I have worked to get to where I am now and how I will one day be like my grandpa and being known in the community of making a difference for the better. My generation needs to be that change and as I embark on this next journey, I won't take this opportunity for granted. Thank you for your time in reading my essay and I hope to be able to win this scholarship to help support my upcoming college career.

Jonas Griffith Scholarship
To be successful, it is important to make choices in life. For me this means that I have discovered that Maryville University is the perfect place for me to continue my education and to be successful. This paper will outline my reasons for continuing my education in my desired field of study and why I am applying for scholarships. My meaningful achievement has been starting out fall 2023 as a Junior and working hard and applying for early graduation. I had been approved for this by my High School and the Board of Education at the end of my first semester. I have entered my second semester as a Senior and feel very proud of this accomplishment.
Once finding out that I was approved I immediately applied to Maryville University and have recently found out that I have been accepted and will continue my education in the fall of 2024. All of this didn’t come without a lot of hard work, dedication, tears and frustration. The last two years have been difficult with taking care of my father after he had major surgery and helping aid him in his recovery. This has been a long difficult road juggling his needs, school and working part-time. My father being on disability most of my life and then having surgery and a cancer scare can really play a toll on one’s life. My grandmother was an addict to her medication that was supposed to be used to save her life. I can remember my mom telling me stories as well as my father about how she was. She was this way up until her death 5 years ago. These are the trials and tribulations that I have had to endure all of my life without exaggeration.
I should have had the opportunity to just be a kid, but having to step up and become an adult earlier than expected has really shown me I can take on much more than I had thought possible. I have the support of my mother and stepfather who have been a great influence and have taught me to have patience and take things one day at a time. Also, that no matter what life throws my may that I can persevere and move forward. Although there are more times than I can count of when I wanted to give up but having that influence from my parents has been a huge help, especially when I have my tough moments with my father. I have taken a great interest in Criminology/Criminal Justice. This is the field of study that I have decided to continue my education in while attending my top college pick of Maryville University this fall.
The field is ever evolving and to come in with fresh ideas and knowledge will help me in my career choice. Having a more hands on college verse just a lecture school, this will help me achieve my goals through my college education career. Although you have read that I don’t have accredited accomplishments and achievements during my High School career that most applicants do. This hasn’t stopped me from being a care giver for my father while in recovery, accomplishing early graduation and finding time to also work part-time along with finding time to be social to an extent. These are all choices that I have had to make to point me in the right direction, this may not seem ideal or doable for most my age. However, this has made me a stronger woman to pursue a career field that will help further me in life. I look forward to what the next 4 years of college will teach me and how it will help me grow as an independent woman. So, in closing I hope that my application is accepted and helps aid me in being a recipient of your scholarship opportunity to help me continue to reach my goals that I have set in life.

Recovery to me is being able to look in the mirror and see the person that you are becoming, not the person you once were. Things could have always been different and not in a good way. There are always reasons to start recovery, but if you are not in the proper mindset and wanting to have the help then you are not ready to take the path.
There has to be a point of hitting rock bottom, that is where you truly find yourself and shift that mindset. Recovery is an ever going battle that one must face each and every day. You can't rush the process but must work the process. Take the needed steps, have that support system in place, may not always be conventional, but having that accountability person available is always a big help.
Take the days as they come and find the strength to keep moving forward and stay the path you were destined to be on.

Being from a family of law enforcement I feel as though it is a calling for me. My uncle was a Detective and my grandpa was a Chief. All though this is a field of employment that comes with risks at any given time. Having an opportunity to make a difference in someone's life is what I am aiming for.
As I enter my freshmen year at Maryville Univeristy in St. Louis, my degree will be in criminology/criminal justice. This will open many doors for me to be able to find my footing into the law enforcement field. As I embark on this next journey of my college career I will be taking opportunities that come my way and learn from so many professors and getting hands on experiences. Although I will be a woman in this field, I will be taking what I learn to further myself. Forensics is the area in which I plan to work towards and have even thought of going beyond my bachelor's degree to get a PH D in forensics psychology.
With having scholarships available to apply for there aren't great chances of actually securing one and by applying for this scholarship I hope my odds may be in my favor. I have pulled my inspiration from not only my family, but as silly as it may seem I have been interested in this field ever since watching Silence of the Lambs. Ever since watching the movie and my ever evolving watching of crime documentaries and I am more determined than ever to focus on law enforcement.
The things that go into a case and the ways in which officers look at things to try and figure out the outcome is very intriguing to me. Like I keep saying I am glad to have the opportunity to apply for this scholarship and I am greatful for anyone who reads this essay. I don't have an elaborate back story as to why I have chosen this field of work, but a real authentic view and the goals that I need to reach to make this a reality once I am finished with school. Any help I can get toward ever rising tuition costs for college is definitely appreciated.
I thank you again for your time and hope that the outcome is that I am chosen, the scholarship will definitely be put toward good use at my university.

Life throws us all curveballs in any given situation. As a female I've learned that I have a voice and although it is intimidating sometimes to speak up, my thoughts and opinions matter to. Had I been born a male more opportunities would be available to me; this has been an ongoing issue for generations. As women we need to stand up for ourselves and be that voice for the future women coming up behind us. My mom is my role model when it comes to this and the struggles she had.
My mom raised me as a single parent, worked full-time and attended college full-time. She sacrificed so much to make sure that I had what I needed. Because she had to work to support me, when my parents went to court, she didn't lose custody of me, but I did end up having to live with my dad who is on disability. I later found out the judge was male; his lawyer was a male and because my mom had to work full time to provide all my needs financially the courts found that my dad was more suited to raise me because I was around him more time in day.
So, this preconceived notion that mother's always get their children in a court case is far from the case. My life with my dad hasn't been great and let me be honest here and I do apologize for my words, but it has been hell. I've been told by my mom that I could always make the decision to live with her, however my struggles with this are I would feel bad to leave my disabled dad. I don't want to make this a bash on my dad, but I do believe his actions and words toward me has made me shy away from liking men completely.
I'm still figuring myself out and where I stand in this world as a female. I see how easily things come to men and the opportunities out there for them. I want to be that one who makes a change and fights for all women to have a voice and to get the same opportunities as men. Again, this comes back to why I look up to my mom. She held her head up that day after court and has since evolved in many departments at her job to the point that she has two job titles. She has shown me that with sticking to a plan, working that plan and observing you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to.
I don't want to be one to sit back in a crowd and be the observer through life. I want to make a difference and use what I've observed and use that knowledge to better myself. I want to be a strong independent woman who can be in a career field of Forensics and be that person that other women behind me look up to and strive to be like. We have a voice in this world just as men do, it's time that women become the "man" of the house and get out of the stigma that our place belongs as a "homemaker". This is not at all a bash to those who feel that this is where they belong, but it's what society teaches us. I'm moving forward with my educational career and going after my goals in life.
Thank you for taking the time to read my essay and I hope that my words make a difference, even if it's impacting just one person here.

As a child I was in "specials" classes or what they call an IEP program. I was held back in kindergarten which is where it all began for me. My years leading up to my 8th grade year were difficult for me as I learn at a difference pace than most. By my 8th grade year, I was able to "graduate" out of IEP and was able to manage my school studies without the extra help. I worked so hard to get to that point. My home life was difficult during this time with the passing of my grandfather who was my rock. He was the one who sat down and did all my homework with me as my father wasn't what you would call a "great" parent. My mother and father went their separate ways when I was 2 and I lived with my father due to the courts making this decision since my father was on disability and my mother had to work. It was a strange decision by the court system, but my parents made it work.
As I got older and moved further into my education career my mother was always the one to push me and motivate me. Although she meant well, this was difficult for me to handle as things at home with my father were getting worse. Without going into too many details I was basically on my own by my freshmen year. I say this cause my father had to have surgery and my mother didn't live in the same town or school district as me. My mother checked on me daily, sometimes too many times in a day. If you know you know. Life was hard during that time, but although I was held back in kindergarten, I am now proud to say that I am graduating High School right on time. My mother's persistence and the drive I got from her got me to the place I am in now. I work part-time, go to school full-time and manage to take care of my father as well.
As an 18 yr old I have endured more life struggles than I like to admit, but this has shown me that no matter what is being thrown at me I find a way to hold my head up and keep moving forward. The pressure to have good grades, be a great employee, care taker to my father and a daughter is quite the accomplishment if you ask me. Although yes, I am worn down most days. I find solace in knowing that my next steps in college won't be as difficult as they could be since I have been able to juggle many hats in the last 4 years. I'm ready to take the next steps in bettering myself and continue my education to pursue a career in forensics. This next chapter of my life is one I am ready to face head on and deal with whatever is thrown my way.
I have a strong support system with my mother and stepfather which is a big plus since my father can't be the person I need him to be for me. It's hard to think that my own father isn't as, how do I even put this into words? He isn't parent material and yet I can't seem to leave him to be on his own, I care entirely too much for someone who doesn't return the love. Wow such a sad way to end an essay, but this is my harsh reality, and I am looking to change how my story ends.

Growing up in a home of someone who is not a fan of the LGBTQ+ community, I have had to struggle with keeping my feelings and thoughts to myself about who I am as an individual. This someone happens to be my father. I have a much older cousin who is married to another man and yet my dad seems to be okay with that because he's not his child.
Although I have had the hardships of coming into my own person and figuring myself out my mother and stepfather have always been strong supporters. They don't see me as the "anti-christ" if you will like my father for having interests in both males and females. These days it seems to be more accepting to not just be straight and although there are those who don't understand or want to understand I still stick to how I feel and what is right for me. I advocate and support the LGBTQ+ community 100% because we need a voice to be part of what is considered the "norm". We are all part of this world and all need to coexist and to be open.
Times have changed and they aren't like they were when my parents were growing up and coming up to the age of being an adult like I recently have. Being awarded this scholarship would help me tremendously as my father is disabled and I have made the choice to live with him to care for him while I work part-time to help with finances, I have also worked very hard to graduate high school a year early. I have been accepted to Maryville University in Missouri where I will be pursuing my education the forensics field. I continue to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community even while in college and join groups in support.
My hopes is that one day the ignorance will stop and people will be more accepting as mentioned before times are changing. We have to be that change for our future generations so the hate and hate crimes can be ended. The LGBTQ+ community isn't going around and spreading hate to those who are straight, love is love no matter in what form this is. I hope that you consider me for this scholarship opportunity to help further my education to help prepare me for my future endeavors. Thank you for taking time out of your day to read my essay.

These are the times in one’s life that are to be enjoyed and cherished, but having to step up and become an adult earlier than expected has really shown me I can take on much more than I had thought possible.
I have the support of my mother and stepfather who have been a great influence and have taught me to have patience and take things one day at a time. Also, that no matter what life throws my may that I can persevere and move forward. With that influence from my parents, I have taken a great interest in Criminology/Criminal Justice. This is the field of study that I have decided to continue my education in while attending Maryville University. The field is ever evolving and to come in with fresh ideas and knowledge will help me in my career choice. Although you have read that I don’t have accredited accomplishments and achievements during my High School career that most applicants do. This hasn’t stopped me from being a care giver for my father while in recovery, accomplishing early graduation and finding time to also work part-time.
These are all choices that I have had to make to point me in the right direction, this may not seem ideal or doable for most my age. However, this has made me a stronger woman to pursue a career field that will help further me in life. So, in closing I hope that my application is accepted and helps aid me in being a recipient of your scholarship opportunity to help me continue to reach my goals that I have set in life.

My father being on disability most of my life and then having surgery and a cancer scare can really play a toll on one’s life.

Mental and physical wellness is so important, without this you can't function in everyday life. My father is disabled and has struggled with this all his life. As I have gotten older and watched him in his everyday life, he struggles so much with both. There isn't anything that seems to help him with this, not even me being his daughter.
My mother tried telling me for years about his mental well-being and I have been in denial until the last couple of years. His well-being has seemed to transfer onto me, and I take the blunt of his rath. I have had my struggles as well due to this and it took me leaving his home for a few days to spend with my mother. This has really opened my eyes to what my mother was talking about all these years and the toll that it has taken on me. I work every day to be a better version of myself and I do this for me because I don't want to end up like my father.
I don't want to live my life miserable; I want to work through the hard times to see the better outcome, I want to also do better and achieve all my goals that I have set. I will continue to work on myself as I enter into college this fall, if I feel the need I will also enter into therapy to gain help and the tools necessary to navigate through my past trauma. The great thing about the college that I am attending will provide me with a life coach that will help me navigate through the next 4 years.
Everyone who struggles doesn't have to go through it alone, there are so many outlets available these days. Anywhere from making a simple phone call to a video chat with trained professionals. There is no reason to ever deal with struggles alone, there is always someone available to talk you off the ledge so to speak. I find talking with my mother helps so much because she knows exactly what I am going through with my father. She lived through the outrageous outbursts and all though she left the situation she helps me through it every time I need her.
So, in short, I will continue to navigate through this rough patch and work through the next, always staying the course and seeking help when and where I need it to keep my mental and physical well-being intact.

"Conquering Adversity" would definitely be the title to my chapter my senior year. I've worked hard to graduate high school a year early and endured so much the last few years. Between growing up way to fast by taking care of my disabled father after a major surgery, working part-time and still managing to keep my GPA up in school. This would be my most difficult chapter in life aside from the passing of my grandparents. I've been lucky enough to have a very supportive mother and stepfather who have helped me through my very low low's and helped me pick up the pieces, dust myself off and helped me to continue on. I wouldn't be where I am today without the adversity I've had to endure and learn from. I will be starting my next chapter as a college freshman and will continue my education to be part of the Forensics field. There is no holding me back no matter what life throws at me, if I can make it through what I have thus far, then I can make it through anything. Life throws curve balls and it's just knowing when to swing and when to wait for the next pitch.

Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
Mental Health is such a big topic, and I can attest to it firsthand. Mental health is something that both my father and mother have endured. My father has been in denial for many years due to childhood trauma with having a tumor removed from his back when he was 3 yrs. old. Since his 20's he has been on disability due to the medical complications he has endured through his life. Now in his 40's have had to undergo a major back surgery again to remove an additional tumor and scar tissue. This has intensified his mental illness which has taken a toll on our relationship. As a 17/18-year-old I have juggled working part-time, being my dad's care giver in my down time. I started fall of 2023 as a Junior my first semester and now have been approved by the school board and my school for early graduation so I have moved to being a Senior my second semester.
While all of this has happened in the last year I myself have struggled with anxiety. The fear of the unknown and how am I going to accomplish everything going on in my life. I have had to learn patience and to just stop, take a deep breath and then work on a solution. My mom and stepdad have been a great help with this as they too struggle with work stress anxiety. Learning some tips and tricks have helped me over the last year to cope with my father and his disabilities and mental health.
Mental Health is something that shouldn't be taken lightly and should be addressed the moment that something feels off about you. You can't ignore the problem and hope that it goes away, this is something that takes time and patience to manage. This should also be something that you don't handle alone, having a support person there that doesn't dismiss you is the key as well. To have a village that supports you is important, this doesn't mean that medication will be the be all end all. If that route is something that you are not looking into, then there are many other techniques that can be used. Finding those tools with the help of a professional can really make a difference to get you back on track.
There are many online options that may be more convenient verse finding a Dr. office to visit. Finding a niche of drawing has been something that helps calm me when I have an anxiety induced day. To unwind from the day, I grab my iPad and create drawings to quiet my mind and zone out. When it has been a bad day I talk to my mom, and we talk through the situation that caused my anxiety so I can recognize the signs that lead up to my anxiety flaring up, so I am more conscious of it. My career aspirations are becoming a reality as I never thought I would get through the mental health of my father and his struggles.
