As a first-generation college student, my journey to higher education has been anything but traditional. I didn’t have the opportunity to attend college immediately after high school. At the time, my primary responsibility was being a caregiver for my father, who was battling leukemia. While my peers were preparing for college applications and exploring career paths, I managed doctor’s appointments and medication schedules and provided care so my mother could do what she needed. My role as a caretaker was demanding, and though I learned resilience and the value of helping others, it meant postponing my dreams of higher education. Years later, as a single mother of four children, I reflected on the life I wanted to build for my family. Life has always been challenging, but I realized that continuing to live in poverty—the same cycle I was raised in—is not the legacy I want to leave for my children. I want them to see a parent who fights for a better life, sets goals and achieves them, and leads by example. That’s when I decided to pursue a college degree for myself and my children’s future. Pursuing higher education as a mother of four has its unique challenges. Managing a household, raising children—some with special needs—and navigating school all at the same time requires a level of organization and perseverance that I didn’t know I had. My son, for instance, is blind in one eye, and my daughter is currently going through an autism diagnosis. Their needs add complexity to our daily lives, but they are also my most significant source of motivation. I want them to know that their potential is limitless, no matter their obstacles. Preparing for college as a first-generation student meant learning to navigate an unfamiliar system, mainly on my own. I’ve spent countless hours researching financial aid options, gathering the required documentation, and balancing my current responsibilities to ensure I take the proper steps. Without the guidance of family members who’ve been through this journey, I’ve relied heavily on community resources, mentors, and my determination. Balancing school and motherhood has taught me time management skills, resilience, and the importance of leaning on a support network. I’ve sought help from local food pantries and childcare resources and embraced the mindset that small steps forward are still progress. The sacrifices I make today—whether staying up late to study after the kids are asleep or working side gigs to pay the bills—are investments in a brighter future. I’ve chosen to pursue a degree in nursing because I want a career that allows me to make a real impact on others’ lives while providing stability for my family. With a nursing degree, I can build a career that breaks the cycle of poverty for my children while giving back to my community. My journey may not be conventional, but it’s driven by a deep desire to build a better future—not just for me but for my kids and the next generation.
Robert F. Lawson Fund for Careers that Care
As a single mother of four and a student pursuing a degree in nursing, my goal is to positively impact the world by helping others, particularly those most vulnerable. Throughout my life, I’ve been drawn to healthcare because of its profound effect on individuals and communities. My nursing journey is deeply personal, as I have witnessed firsthand the compassion and care provided to my children and my family during difficult times. This has fueled my desire to give back to others and make a difference in their lives, especially in pediatric care for children with special needs, like my own children. Growing up in a family that faced significant challenges, including my veteran father’s battle with leukemia, I learned early on the importance of support and empathy in times of hardship. As a caregiver for my father, I saw how crucial it is to have someone who can advocate for and provide comfort to those in need, especially when dealing with the VA. They do not make things easy. This experience shaped my desire to pursue a career where I can be that person for others, mainly families dealing with serious illnesses or disabilities. By becoming a nurse, I aim to combine my passion for helping others with the skills I gain through my education. I plan to specialize in pediatric nursing, focusing on children with special needs. Every child deserves the best possible care, and I am committed to making a tangible difference by providing medical care and emotional support to children and their families. My experiences as a mother of children with special needs have given me insight into the challenges these families face, and I want to be there to help them navigate those challenges with compassion and understanding. In addition to my nursing career, I hope to advocate for better access to healthcare for underserved communities. I believe that healthcare should be accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status, and I want to work toward reducing the disparities in healthcare today. By pursuing this career, I am working toward a better future for my family and contributing to the larger goal of creating a more equitable and compassionate healthcare system. Through this scholarship, I could continue my education without the added stress of financial constraints. It would allow me to focus on my studies and complete my nursing program, ultimately enabling me to serve my community and make the positive impact I envision.
      Future Leaders Scholarship
Before becoming a mother of twins and embarking on my nursing journey, I had the opportunity to demonstrate leadership as an assistant operations manager at a large call center for Lincoln Motor Company. In that role, I oversaw a team of 35+ adults, where I was responsible for daily coaching, mentoring, and training. I also developed learning materials, attended meetings with headquarters in Dearborn, and ensured that key information was relayed to my team. However, one experience that truly shaped my leadership skills involved a particularly challenging employee new hire, a young man with autism who had just graduated high school. I had no experience at that time with someone with autism. Jeramey’s communication challenges made it difficult for him to interact with customers naturally or efficiently. His calls, which should have lasted five minutes, often extended to 40 minutes to an hour. I hired him because of his sweet nature and the potential I saw in him. His sister was already on my team, and I believed that with her help and the right guidance, we could help Jeramey succeed. The first year was incredibly difficult. Despite our best efforts, every day brought new challenges. We were often busy, and I pulled Jeramey off the phones to do other tasks, like actively listening to his sister's calls or other team members. Jeramey struggled with the basic conversational flow and sounded robotic, sometimes confusing our older clientele. He was clearly frustrated, often in tears, feeling like he couldn’t meet expectations. But I refused to give up on him or let him quit. I worked closely with him, using patience, empathy, and tailored coaching strategies. I researched autism extensively to help him. I focused on breaking down his challenges into smaller, more manageable goals. Every day, we celebrated small victories and progress, no matter how minor they seemed. Over eight months, I saw significant improvements. Jeramey began to speak more confidently and warmly, engaging with customers in a less scripted way. The moment that stood out the most was when I finally rewarded him with a bonus. The smile on his face was priceless, but it was the emotional satisfaction I felt in seeing how far he had come that truly moved me. Jeramey had worked hard, and I had been there every step of the way, guiding him toward success. Five years later, he is still with the company, and I am proud to know he has become an expert in his role. This experience taught me the importance of patience, empathy, and persistence in leadership. It showed me that effective leadership isn’t just about giving directions—it’s about understanding individual needs, helping people grow, and pushing through challenges together. These are skills I will carry with me into my nursing career. I am passionate about management and training, and I know that with my BSN, I can lead and support teams in healthcare settings, helping others achieve their full potential as I did with Jeramey.
      Kumar Family Scholarship
As a first-generation, low-income college student, my journey toward higher education has been shaped by perseverance, hard work, and an unwavering determination to overcome obstacles. I am a mother of four, pursuing a degree in nursing while balancing the demands of full-time education, parenting, and financial hardship. My experiences have taught me resilience and the importance of community, inspiring me to dedicate myself to achieving my educational goals and giving back to others in need. Growing up, the idea of attending college felt like a distant dream. Without family members who had navigated higher education, I had to learn everything about the process independently. Financial challenges further complicated this journey as I struggled to provide for my family while pursuing my studies. Despite these hardships, I maintained a strong GPA of 3.8 and stayed actively involved in my community through volunteer work. One of my most meaningful extracurricular activities has been volunteering my time with underserved women in my community. I personally have nothing monetary to offer, but a lot of knowledge I have learned over the years has helped some avoid homelessness. I help connect them with food, housing, and financial assistance resources, providing support and guidance during their most challenging times. I do this with no expectations in return; my children and I still go through extreme financial hardships. It is solely just work from my heart because I would want someone like me in my corner. These experiences have deepened my passion for helping others and reinforced my commitment to becoming a nurse who offers compassionate care to patients and their families. This scholarship would alleviate the financial burden of my education, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and my mission to serve others. It would help me achieve my goal of becoming a nurse and serve as a stepping stone to a brighter future for my family. Education can transform lives, and I am determined to use mine to make a meaningful impact in my community and beyond. Receiving this scholarship would be an incredible honor. It would help me continue my journey toward breaking generational cycles and achieving my dreams. With your support, I can set an example for my children and others in my community, showing them that with perseverance and support, anything is possible. Thank you for considering me for this opportunity to further my education and pursue a career dedicated to helping others.
      Natalie Joy Poremski Scholarship
My faith has been the foundation of my strength and perseverance, particularly during one of the most challenging experiences of my life—the three months I spent in the NICU with my twins. From the moment I learned I was pregnant with triplets originally, I faced overwhelming doubt from those around me. Many people, including medical professionals, urged me to consider abortion, not because of any immediate threat to the babies' health, but because they believed my body and health could not endure another pregnancy. I did lose our third baby early in this pregnancy, which didn't help others' opinions on my continuing the pregnancy. Despite the fear and uncertainty, I knew deep in my heart that God had a plan for me and my children, and my faith gave me the courage to carry on. The months leading up to their birth and the time spent in the NICU were nothing short of a highly challenging journey. Each day brought new challenges with SIDS or DESTAT events, moments where their hearts stopped, and episodes where they struggled or stopped breathing, countless nights of uncertainty. There were days so extreme I didn't know which twin's NICU room to be in or who needed me more. There were days when all I had to hold onto was my faith. I would pray fervently, asking God to guide me and my babies through the storm. I felt His hand every moment, offering me peace and assurance that things would work according to His plan. The prayers and support I received from the staff at the Christian hospital where my twins were cared for further reinforced my belief that God was walking this path with us. The nurses and doctors prayed with me daily, and their encouragement reminded me to trust in God's greater purpose. Today, my twins are alive and thriving despite some lingering breathing issues and special needs. They are a testament to the power of faith, prayer, and the strength God gives us to persevere. Their survival has inspired me to pursue a career in nursing, specifically in neonatal care. I want to provide the same unwavering support and compassion I received in the NICU. I aim to work in a Christian hospital where I can combine my faith with my career to provide hope for families facing similar struggles. This journey has solidified my pro-life beliefs. It has shown me that every life holds incredible value and purpose, no matter how uncertain or fragile. I plan to use my education and career to protect and nurture life at its most vulnerable stages. I aim to make a difference for families and their precious children through faith, compassion, and dedication, just as others did for me, giving hope in hopeless situations.

Humility has been the cornerstone of my journey as a low-income, full-time student and mother of four pursuing a nursing degree. The experience of nearly losing everything when my twins were in the NICU was profoundly humbling. Witnessing their struggle for survival opened my eyes to the fragility of life and instilled in me a deep appreciation for compassion and resilience. It also fueled my determination to work hard, not only for my family but also for others in need. This humbling experience has driven me to make time for volunteer work, assisting women in my community who face challenges similar to those I once endured. One specific matter has been significant to me: a woman in our community who lost custody of her children during a domestic violence situation and was on the brink of homelessness. Understanding how overwhelming her situation must have felt, I stepped in to support her in every way possible. I have helped her navigate local agencies to secure housing assistance and food resources, ensuring she did not have to live in her car. Beyond practical support, I have provided emotional encouragement, helping her process her experiences and prepare for her custody hearings. I am still on this journey with her, cheering her on and supporting her in any way, along with a handful of other women in the community. Through this, I have learned humility is not about diminishing oneself but uplifting others with dignity and empathy. I approach my volunteer efforts without judgment, recognizing that life’s hardships can affect anyone. Any one of us could be a few missed bills away from being in their shoes. The impact of my actions has been profound—helping this woman regain her stability has reminded me of the strength in the community and the importance of extending kindness wherever possible. As a nursing student, these experiences continue to shape my commitment to humbly serving others. Nursing is a profession that requires not only technical skills but also the ability to connect with patients on a human level. My journey has prepared me to embody this core value, treating each patient with respect and understanding regardless of their circumstances. I am hungry to succeed, but I know that true success is measured by the positive impact I can have on others’ lives. These values will guide me toward becoming a nurse, ensuring that my future practice is built on humility, compassion, and dedication.
      Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Billie Eilish’s music resonates with millions of listeners worldwide, and for me, her songs have served as both an emotional outlet and a source of empowerment. Among her extensive discography, three songs stand out as particularly impactful: "bury a friend," "everything I wanted," and "idontwannabeyouanymore." Each of these tracks speaks to a different aspect of my life, offering raw emotion, vulnerability, and the comfort of knowing I'm not alone in my experiences. "bury a friend" is the first Billie Eilish song I loved. From the haunting beat to the dark, whispered vocals, the song’s eerie yet captivating atmosphere drew me in. The lyrics, which delve into feeling lost, alienated, and overwhelmed, resonate with me deeply. At a time when I was grappling with anxiety and self-doubt, "bury a friend" spoke to the way I felt trapped inside my mind. The song explores inner conflict, fear, and the struggle to escape negative thoughts. Billie’s ability to translate such complex emotions into music made me feel seen and understood in a problematic way when expressing them with words. "everything i wanted" is another track that hits close to home. The song reflects on the pressures of fame, the battle with internal demons, and the fear of losing oneself in the pursuit of success. While I am not a public figure like Billie, I found myself relating to the themes of loneliness, self-worth, and the expectations we place on ourselves. The line “I had a dream / I got everything I wanted / But when I wake up, I see / You with me” stands out because it speaks to the idea that true happiness doesn’t come from external achievements but from connection and understanding. This song reminded me that material success means little without emotional fulfillment, a lesson I’ve learned as I navigate my goals. Finally, "idontwannabeyouanymore" perfectly captures the struggle with self-esteem and body image. The song’s simplicity and vulnerability are what make it so powerful. Billie’s raw confession about not wanting to be herself because of insecurity is something I can relate to personally. Sometimes, I’ve felt disconnected, wishing I could be someone else. This song permitted me to embrace my imperfections and accept that having moments of doubt is okay. It’s a reminder that self-love is a process, and we all deserve compassion, especially from ourselves. Billie Eilish’s music speaks to me because it is unapologetically honest. Her ability to transform personal struggles into universal anthems has given me comfort and strength, knowing I am not alone, even in my darkest moments. These three songs have shaped how I understand my emotions and continue inspiring me to be more accepting of myself.
      Charles B. Brazelton Memorial Scholarship
As a child, I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. My love for animals was unmistakable in my everyday actions—I always picked up strays and brought them home. Whether it was a lost dog or an injured squirrel that sent me to the hospital more than once for rabies shots, I felt an innate drive to care for them, to offer the love and attention they so desperately needed. Caring for animals gave me a sense of purpose and joy, and for many years, I imagined a future dedicated to helping them. Even today, my passion for animals remains; I still care for strays whenever I encounter them, just as I did as a child. However, life often has a way of leading us down paths we didn’t initially foresee. Today, I am in school full-time to become a nurse. While my career dreams have shifted, the heart of my childhood goal remains the same: helping those in need. Nursing allows me to nurture, heal, and provide comfort, much like my dream of veterinary care did, but now my focus is on people instead of animals. This transition feels natural, as the compassion and care I once had for animals have expanded to encompass humans as I’ve grown older. My decision to specialize in neonatal intensive care nursing (NICU) is deeply personal. A few years ago, I spent over three months in the NICU with my twins, born at just 29 weeks on Thanksgiving 2022. It was the most challenging and emotional period of my life. Watching the NICU nurses tirelessly care for my babies, reviving them repeatedly with unparalleled skill and dedication, left a profound impression on me. Their ability to provide hope and healing during such a critical time inspired me to follow this path. That time in the NICU transformed my perspective on life and solidified my desire to be a part of that world. I want to be the kind of nurse who makes a difference for families in their most vulnerable moments, just as those nurses did for me. No parent should ever endure the heartache of watching a child die, let alone two children, repeatedly for months. That experience brought me closer to God, and I truly believe that he has placed me on this path for a purpose. My journey started with animals, but it has led me to a calling where I can provide care, compassion, and hope for others in life’s most trying moments.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
From a young age, I’ve been captivated by helping others and making a meaningful impact. My chosen field of interest, nursing, reflects this passion for service. I’m pursuing a degree in nursing because I believe it combines the perfect balance of science, compassion, and human connection, allowing me to touch lives directly during moments of vulnerability and need. My journey toward nursing was shaped by personal experiences that underscored the critical role healthcare professionals play in people’s lives. In 2022, I spent several months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with my premature twins. It was a time filled with uncertainty and fear but also one where I witnessed incredible acts of care and kindness from nurses who not only tended to my babies but also supported me emotionally. Their dedication and skill inspired me to pursue a career where I can provide that same care and reassurance to others. I aim to make a difference in healthcare by focusing on underserved communities. Too often, people in these areas face barriers to accessing quality care due to financial, geographic, or systemic challenges. I aim to address these disparities by advocating for equitable healthcare and compassionate care to those who need it most. Whether it’s educating families on preventative care, supporting patients through difficult diagnoses, or simply being a comforting presence, I want to be a source of hope and healing. My personal beliefs have always been rooted in the power of resilience, empathy, and determination. As a single mother of four children, including two with special needs, my life is a constant balancing act. Despite financial hardships and the challenges of managing my children’s needs alongside my education, I remain steadfast in my commitment to achieving my dreams. These experiences have taught me invaluable lessons in perseverance, adaptability, and prioritizing what truly matters. What motivates me most is the opportunity to create a legacy of care and impact beyond my immediate circumstances. Nursing is more than just a career—it’s a calling that allows me to give back to my community and create positive change in the lives of others. Through my work, I hope to inspire my children to see the value of service, hard work, and compassion. The legacy of John Young, as described by the Cochener family, is a powerful reminder of the importance of following one’s passion and striving for excellence. Like him, I aspire to push boundaries and contribute meaningfully to my chosen field. This scholarship represents more than just financial support—it’s an affirmation of my commitment to using my education to make a difference and to honoring the ideals of resilience and determination that John Young embodied. With this scholarship, I would be one step closer to becoming a nurse and making a lasting impact in the healthcare field. It would allow me to focus on my studies and, ultimately, on helping others. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to apply and share my aspirations.
      Dr. Michael Paglia Scholarship
The healthcare field has always been close to my heart, not just as a career choice but as a deeply personal calling. As a first-generation college student from a low-income background, I have faced numerous challenges navigating the academic world. Still, my determination to succeed is fueled by my passion for helping others. I am pursuing a degree in nursing because nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system, providing compassionate and life-saving care to patients and families during their most vulnerable moments. My decision to pursue nursing stems from my personal experiences and the profound impact that healthcare professionals have had on my life. In 2022, I gave birth to my twins prematurely, and they required an extended stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This was one of the most challenging periods of my life, as I was separated from my other two children, struggling financially, and dealing with the stress of watching my newborns fight for their lives. During those long months in the NICU, the nurses became more than just caregivers—they were my lifeline. Their expertise, compassion, and encouragement inspired me to pursue a career where I could provide others with the same care and support. As a single mother of four children, including two with special needs, my journey to achieving my educational goals has been far from easy. I juggle countless responsibilities, from managing my children’s health and education to working side gigs and applying for scholarships to cover tuition. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to becoming a nurse. I know that this career will provide financial stability for my family and allow me to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. My ultimate goal is to specialize in maternal and neonatal care, focusing on underserved communities where access to quality healthcare is often limited. I want to use my degree to advocate for families navigating difficult medical situations, ensuring they receive the necessary care and resources. Having experienced the challenges of postpartum recovery, NICU stays, and financial hardship firsthand, I believe I am uniquely equipped to empathize with and support patients in similar circumstances. Beyond providing direct patient care, I want to contribute to the healthcare field by mentoring and supporting other first-generation students who are pursuing careers in medicine. I understand how overwhelming it can be to navigate the complexities of higher education without guidance, and I want to be a source of encouragement and support for others. Whether sharing my experiences, helping with applications, or simply offering a listening ear, I aim to pay forward the support I’ve received along my journey. Dr. Michael Paglia’s legacy as a compassionate physician and philanthropist is a powerful reminder of giving back to others. His dedication to helping people achieve their dreams resonates deeply with me, as I, too, hope to use my education and experiences to uplift those in need. This scholarship would provide critical financial support to help me continue my studies and serve as a reminder of the impact that generosity and mentorship can have on someone’s life. In the future, I aspire to embody the values Dr. Paglia stood for—compassion, dedication, and a commitment to helping others overcome adversity. By becoming a nurse and advocating for underserved communities, I hope to honor his legacy and create a lasting impact in the healthcare field.
Carol B. Warren, You are Loved Scholarship
Life shapes us through challenges, and I am a living testament to the resilience that comes from facing adversity. As a single mother of four children, I am pursuing my education later in life. My journey to this point has been anything but traditional, and receiving this scholarship would help me continue working toward a better future for myself and my children. My story took a pivotal turn on February 25, 2014—my 18th birthday. On what should have been a day of celebration and hope for the future, I lost my father after staying at the hospital for days after his surgery. He never came home with us. His passing left a void in my family that profoundly impacted all of us, especially my mother, who was left without her partner and main source of support. Instead of receiving encouragement to continue my education, I was pushed into the workforce to help shoulder the burden of taking care of my family. While my peers were applying to colleges and envisioning their futures, I put my dreams on hold to ensure that my family’s immediate needs were met. Years later, I am still grappling with the ripple effects of those choices. As a single mother of four children, including two with special needs, my days are consumed with managing their health concerns, school activities, and household responsibilities. There are moments when it feels like there is no time for myself, let alone for school. However, obtaining a degree is the key to breaking the cycle of financial instability and creating a better life for my children. Going back to school has not been easy. I juggle countless responsibilities, from ensuring my children have everything they need to find creative ways to make ends meet. Financial hardship is a constant challenge—I’ve sold personal belongings, taken on odd jobs, and applied for every scholarship and grant available to pay for my education. Despite these obstacles, I remain determined to succeed because earning a degree will open doors that have been closed for too long. This scholarship would be more than financial aid; it would be a lifeline. It would ease some of the immense pressure I face daily and allow me to focus on my studies and my children. More importantly, it would represent an acknowledgment of my journey—a journey defined by resilience, determination, and a commitment to creating a better future. As a non-traditional student, I understand the value of education in a way I couldn’t have at 18 when I went through a GED program as quickly as possible to get to work and help. Back then, I didn’t fully grasp the opportunities I was missing. Now, I am pursuing my education for myself and my children. I want them to see that it’s never too late to follow your dreams, no matter how difficult the path may seem. This scholarship would honor my father’s memory and the sacrifices I’ve made during those hard years of grieving and taking on a burden that, as a child, shouldn't have been mine to carry. With this support, I can continue my education, secure a brighter future, and inspire my children to strive for their own success.
      Women in Healthcare Scholarship
I have chosen to pursue a degree in healthcare because I believe it is the most meaningful way for me to use my skills and experiences to make a difference in people’s lives. My journey toward this decision has been shaped by personal experiences that revealed the profound impact compassionate and skilled healthcare professionals can have on individuals and families. One of the most pivotal moments in my life was when I gave birth to my twins. Due to complications, they required an extended stay in the NICU. Those months were among the most challenging I have ever faced but were also transformative. During that time, I witnessed firsthand the incredible dedication of the nurses and doctors who cared for my babies. Their expertise, kindness, and unwavering commitment inspired me. They didn’t just treat my children; they supported my entire family during one of our most vulnerable moments. The care I received during that time sparked a desire to provide others with the same kind of support. Healthcare is more than just a career—it is a calling to serve, heal, and uplift. As someone who has faced significant challenges, including mental health struggles and financial instability, I understand the importance of empathetic care. I want to be a part of a field that provides hope and comfort to those in need, just as it was given to me. As a woman in healthcare, I want to make a positive impact by addressing not only my patients' physical health but also their emotional and mental well-being. Women bring a unique perspective to healthcare, often emphasizing holistic and empathetic care. I aspire to create a safe, welcoming environment where patients feel heard, respected, and valued. I aim to build trusting relationships with patients, particularly those who feel marginalized or overlooked within the healthcare system. Additionally, I want to be an advocate for maternal and child health, drawing from my personal experiences to help others navigate similar challenges. There is a growing need for healthcare professionals who understand the complexities of postpartum recovery, neonatal care, and mental health. My journey has equipped me with the compassion and determination to make a meaningful difference in these areas. As a low-income single mother of four, pursuing a healthcare degree is not without its challenges. However, these obstacles have only strengthened my resolve to succeed. I want to show my children that overcoming adversity and achieving their dreams through hard work and perseverance is possible. My story will inspire my children and those I serve in my future career. Ultimately, my goal is to leave a lasting, positive impact on the lives of my patients and my community. Healthcare is a field where I can use my passion, resilience, and compassion to create meaningful change. I am excited to embark on this journey and contribute to a profession that has already given me and my family so much.
HeySunday Scholarship for Moms in College
Continuing my education has been one of my life's most challenging yet rewarding decisions. As a single mother of four young children, two of whom have special needs, my days are filled with responsibilities, but my dream of building a better future for my family keeps me moving forward. Despite our many obstacles, I am determined to succeed, both for myself and my children. My inspiration to continue my education comes from my desire to create a stable and fulfilling life for my children. I want to give them opportunities I never had and show them the importance of perseverance and hard work. Watching my children grow, learn, and thrive—even amidst our struggles—reminds me daily why I am on this journey. Pursuing higher education is not just about obtaining a degree; it’s about creating a legacy of resilience and hope for my family. The road has not been easy. As a low-income family, the financial burden of continuing my education has been one of the most significant challenges. I often don’t know how I will pay for my upcoming semesters, but I refuse to let that uncertainty stop me. I have sold everything I can spare, from household items to clothes, to scrape funds for tuition and fees. I have taken on unconventional side gigs with irregular hours, balancing them around my children’s schedules and needs. I also apply for every scholarship opportunity available, hoping for a chance to lighten the financial load. Managing my roles as a student and a mother requires constant adaptability and determination. My two children with special needs have frequent medical appointments, therapies, and educational requirements that demand a significant amount of time and attention. Coordinating their care while ensuring my other children feel equally supported is such a delicate balancing act. Even during the hardest times—when the electricity is turned off, or we face other financial hardships—I prioritize ensuring everyone has what they need. Homework is a family affair: I help my children with theirs, and once they’re settled, I turn my attention to my own assignments, often working late into the night. Despite these challenges, I have learned to find strength in small victories. Whether it is completing a difficult assignment, watching my children meet a developmental milestone, or finding a way to pay another bill, each accomplishment fuels my determination to keep going. My children are my biggest motivation. I want them to see that we can overcome obstacles and achieve our goals no matter how tough life gets. This journey has taught me the value of resourcefulness, resilience, and faith. There are days when the weight of it all feels overwhelming, but I remind myself that every effort I make brings us closer to a brighter future. Through this experience, I have become a better mother and a more focused and determined student because I truly want this. Education is my path to providing a better life for my family, and no matter the challenges we face, I will continue to persevere. My children deserve a future filled with possibilities, and I will stop at nothing to make that a reality for them.

When I was 14, I faced one of the most challenging experiences of my life: hiking Cadillac Mountain in Maine. At the time, I was significantly overweight, and the idea of walking one of the most iconic trails in the country felt intimidating. However, I was determined to push through the challenge, encouraged by my family and the promise of breathtaking views from the summit. What began as a daunting task became a transformative experience that shaped my perspective on health, perseverance, and self-belief. The hike was anything but easy. Each step felt like an uphill battle, and I vividly remember the ache in my legs and the sweat dripping down my face as I struggled to keep up with others on the trail. But with every switchback and rocky climb, I found moments of clarity. I realized that each step forward, no matter how small, brought me closer to my goal. The sense of accomplishment I felt when I finally reached the summit was unlike anything I had experienced. Standing atop Cadillac Mountain, looking out over the endless horizon of rugged coastline and forest, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. For the first time in a long time, I believed in my own strength and resilience. That hike marked a turning point in my life. I returned home with a newfound sense of purpose, inspired to take my health more seriously. Over the next year, I committed to making big and small changes to improve my physical and mental well-being. I started walking daily, made healthier food choices, and set new goals. By the time the following summer arrived, I was ready to tackle my next challenge: hiking the New River Gorge in West Virginia. The New River Gorge was even more demanding than Cadillac Mountain. The steep ascents and rugged terrain tested my endurance, but I approached the challenge with confidence and determination this time. With each mile, I drew strength from the lessons I had learned the year before—how to pace myself, stay focused, and embrace the journey, no matter how tough it got. Reaching the top of the gorge was a deeply rewarding experience, not only because of the stunning views but also because it represented how far I had come. These hikes taught me that meaningful growth often comes through discomfort and perseverance. They showed me the value of setting goals and working steadily toward them, even when the path seems steep and unrelenting. These lessons have stayed with me, shaping my approach to challenges in other areas of my life. Whether pursuing an education, tackling personal goals, or supporting others on their own journeys, I strive to bring the same determination and resilience that carried me up those trails. Hiking Cadillac Mountain and the New River Gorge were more than outdoor adventures—they were pivotal moments that taught me the power of perseverance and self-belief. They inspired me to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and keep climbing, one step at a time.

Breast cancer has been a significant part of my life and family history. My great-grandmother and two aunts were diagnosed with breast cancer, and I witnessed firsthand the physical, emotional, and psychological toll it took on them and our family. Both of my aunts and great-grandmother underwent complete breast removals, and those were some of the most frightening and uncertain times in my life. The strength they exhibited throughout their journeys was remarkable, but their experiences also highlighted the need for greater education, awareness, and support surrounding breast health. For my family, breast cancer was not just a statistic or a possibility—it was a reality that shaped our lives. Watching my loved ones navigate their diagnoses and treatments left a deep impression on me. I learned how crucial it is to detect breast cancer early, to have access to knowledgeable healthcare professionals, and to ensure that individuals facing breast concerns are met with compassionate care and understanding. However, I also realized that the conversation around breast cancer often falls short of addressing its seriousness. In today’s world, discussions about breast cancer often appear as trends or campaigns centered around pink ribbons and catchy slogans. While these efforts have undoubtedly raised awareness and funding, they sometimes fail to capture the gravity of the disease and its impact on real lives. Breast cancer isn’t just about awareness; it’s about survival, prevention, and the ongoing emotional and physical recovery of those affected. My family's experiences have taught me that there’s still so much work to be done in shifting the narrative from superficial campaigns to meaningful education and action. Breast health education is a vital component of this change. It equips individuals with the tools and knowledge to advocate for their health, understand risk factors, and seek timely medical intervention. Furthermore, it empowers communities by breaking down stigma and fostering open conversations about self-examinations, mammograms, and the importance of genetic testing. Education is not just preventative; it’s transformative, offering hope and clarity in what can feel like an overwhelming journey. My passion for advancing breast health education stems from these personal experiences and a deep desire to make a difference. I want to help individuals like my great-grandmother and aunts by providing medical support, emotional guidance, and education. I also believe that more attention must be given to underserved communities, where access to resources and knowledge is often limited. Breast cancer has impacted my life in profound ways, but it has also inspired me to take action. By pursuing this path, I hope to contribute to a world where fewer families endure the fear and uncertainty that mine faced. This scholarship represents an incredible opportunity to honor the legacy of someone like Annie Pringle, whose commitment to supporting others aligns with my vision for a future where breast health is prioritized, accessible, and inclusive to everyone. Through education, advocacy, and compassionate care, I am determined to turn my family’s history of breast cancer into a source of empowerment and change wherever I go by speaking and educating on it.
Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students
Nursing has always been a profession I deeply admire. Still, it wasn’t until I spent three challenging months in the NICU with my twins that I truly understood the profound impact nurses have on individuals and families. As a single mother, those months were some of the most difficult of my life. I watched my babies fight for their lives, surrounded by a team of compassionate, skilled nurses who not only cared for them but also supported me in ways I can never forget. Their dedication, kindness, and expertise left a huge impression on me, and it was during those long days in the NICU, I realized nursing was my true calling. Helping others has always been a core part of who I am. Whether it’s supporting friends and family, volunteering in my community, or simply lending a hand to someone in need, I’ve always found joy and purpose in service. However, my experience in the NICU shifted my perspective. I witnessed firsthand how nurses don’t just treat patients; they heal hearts, bring hope, and make difficult situations more bearable. I knew then that I wanted to be that source of strength and care for others facing similar challenges. As a single mother, pursuing a nursing degree comes with its challenges, but it’s a dream I am deeply committed to. I am inspired by my found children and motivated by the desire to give them a strong example of perseverance and dedication. Nursing isn’t just a career to me; it’s the fulfillment of a lifelong passion for helping others and a way to give back for the care and kindness my family received. I envision myself working in a pediatric or neonatal setting, helping families navigate their own medical journeys with the same compassion and expertise I experienced. I also hope to become a mentor for other single mothers or non-traditional students pursuing their dreams, showing them that it’s never too late to answer a calling. I also want my children to see the struggles I go through, learn from them, go for their dreams, and not put them on the back burner like I did in my earlier years. This path is not just about a career change; it’s about stepping into a role that aligns with my values and passions. Nursing is more than a profession; it’s a way to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, and I am ready to embrace this journey with all my heart.

As a child, I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. My love for animals was evident in my constant efforts to rescue strays and nurse them back to health. I thrived in the caretaker role, whether for an injured bird or a wandering cat. This innate desire to nurture and heal has always been a part of my identity. Though my career dreams have evolved over time, the heart of that dream—to care for and help others—remains the same. My life took a profound turn when I became a mother. As a single mom of four children, I have faced immense challenges, often navigating life with very limited financial resources. Despite these hurdles, my focus has always been on creating a better future for my children. Their well-being has been my motivation to pursue higher education, even when the path has been anything but easy. The defining moment in my journey came when my twins were born prematurely at just 29 weeks. Spending over three months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with them was one of the most emotional and transformative experiences of my life. I witnessed firsthand the unwavering dedication, expertise, and compassion of the NICU nurses who cared for my babies around the clock. These nurses provided exceptional medical care and supported me during a time of immense fear and uncertainty. It was in that NICU that I had my “aha” moment. I realized I wanted to be a nurse—not just as a career but as a way to give back and make a tangible difference in the lives of others. The resilience I saw in those nurses mirrored my determination as a single mother. I knew I wanted to embody the same qualities of compassion and strength to help others through their most vulnerable moments. As a full-time nursing student, I am working tirelessly to achieve this goal. My journey is fueled by a deep passion for caring for others and the desire to provide my children with a stable, thriving life. Nursing is not just a profession for me—it is a calling to extend the love and resilience that has shaped my own story. I hope to touch many families with the love and grace I was shown during my twin's hospitalization in the NICU; I hope to one day help the Ronald McDonald House and support families one day as they did for mine. I even aspire to one day even work at that same hospital that saved my children. I know I'm not young, and life isn't easy for me and my family, but I still have a drive and dreams to fulfill, and one day, I want to be even more than a nurse and make it to being a NP.

Growing up in a single-parent household, I witnessed firsthand the strength, determination, and sacrifice that define a parent’s love. My mother, a single mom to just me, worked tirelessly to provide for me while ensuring I felt so loved and supported. Her resilience in the face of financial and emotional challenges shaped me into the person I am today and profoundly influenced my aspirations to make a difference in the lives of others. My mother wore many hats: provider, teacher, protector, and friend. Watching her juggle long hours at work while making time for family dinners, helping with homework, and cheering me on at school events taught me the value of hard work and dedication. She instilled in me that challenges are not roadblocks but opportunities to grow. This perspective has been a guiding force in my life and a major influence on my goals. Our financial struggles made me appreciate the importance of stability and compassion in caregiving. I remember times when my mother sacrificed her needs to ensure I had everything I needed, from school supplies to a safe home. Her selflessness inspired my desire to pursue a career in nursing. I want to use my talents to care for others, as my mother cared for me, ensuring people feel valued and supported during their most vulnerable moments. A pivotal experience in my life was spending over three months in the NICU with my twins, who were born prematurely as a newly single mom myself to now 4 under 4. It was a challenging and emotional time, but it solidified my passion for helping others. The NICU nurses who cared for my children provided not only medical expertise but also emotional support that gave me hope. Their impact on my family inspired me to specialize in neonatal intensive care. I aim to become a nurse who not only heals but also uplifts families facing their hardest days, providing the same grace and support that was shown to me. Being raised by a single parent has taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of service. My mother’s unwavering love and determination inspire me to use my talents to create a positive impact in the lives of others, ensuring her legacy of strength and kindness lives on through my work. I also want to show my children that, as a single parent, anything is possible, and life throws curve balls, it is all just in how you take the hits and roll with them.
