Football has shaped my life in ways I never could have imagined. From the pain of losing two brothers, Evan and Robbie, to the triumphs and challenges I faced as a four-year varsity starter, the sport has provided me with purpose, strength, and the ability to make a lasting impact on those around me. Evan, my older brother, would have been a force on the football field. He was full of talent and potential, and his dream was to play at the high school level. Tragically, he passed away before he could ever put on a uniform. His death left a hole in our family, one that I feel every time I step onto the field. Football became a way for me to honor his memory—by carrying on the passion he had for the game, I felt I could keep a piece of him with me. Robbie, my other brother, also left this world too soon. While Robbie wasn’t as directly involved in football as Evan, his influence was felt in the way he taught me about resilience. He showed me the importance of staying strong, even in the face of adversity, and how to persevere through difficult times. His spirit inspired me to push through the hard practices, the tough losses, and the pressure that often comes with being a varsity starter. When I felt like giving up, I thought of Robbie’s quiet strength and knew I had to keep going. My time as a four-year varsity starter is a chapter of my life I’ll never forget. Those years tested my character in ways nothing else could. I went from a nervous freshman to a confident leader, and in my final season, I helped lead my team to the D-6 state championship game. That achievement was more than just a personal success—it was a testament to my growth as a player, as well as the culmination of countless hours of practice, dedication, and sacrifice. But the journey wasn’t just about football—it was about pushing myself beyond what I thought was possible and proving that the power of hard work and determination could lead to something greater than myself. Football also gave me a platform to influence others. In the locker room, I was not just a player—I was a mentor, a motivator, and a reminder to my teammates that the game was bigger than any single individual. My brothers’ stories were always a part of my journey, and I made sure to share their lessons with my teammates. My brothers taught me that the game wasn’t just about winning—it was about showing up for each other and giving everything you’ve got, no matter what. Now, as I look toward the future, I plan to use my passion for football to make a difference in my community. Whether through coaching, mentoring, or simply supporting young athletes, I want to create opportunities for others to experience the life-changing power of the game. Football has given me more than just victories on the field; it’s given me a sense of responsibility to pass on what I’ve learned, to play with heart and never give up, just as my brothers would have. In the end, football is more than a sport to me. It is a reminder of love, loss, resilience, and growth. It is a way for me to honor my brothers and make sure their legacies live on in everything I do. Through football, I’ve learned how to turn pain into purpose, and I will continue to use that lesson to inspire and uplift my community for years to come.

My goals are shaped by a deep desire to honor my late brothers, Evan and Robbie, who both tragically passed away. I’m determined to continue their legacy by attending Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), excelling in mechanical engineering, and competing in pole vaulting—just as my other brother Jacob did when he made it to nationals. Reaching these goals will require careful planning, resource management, and dedication. First, I aim to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at SVSU. This field has always fascinated me, particularly its potential to solve real-world problems. To succeed, I will focus on my coursework and seek out internships or research opportunities that offer hands-on experience. I’ll take full advantage of the academic resources available at SVSU, including faculty support and specialized engineering labs, and stay disciplined to stay on track for graduation. In addition to academics, I am committed to competing in pole vaulting at the collegiate level. My brother Jacob was a national-level pole vaulter, and I want to follow in his footsteps. To make this happen, I plan to train rigorously—focusing on improving my technique, building strength, and maintaining peak physical condition. I will also seek guidance from SVSU’s track coaches to continually refine my skills and compete at a high level. Success in pole vaulting will require both physical and mental preparation, and I will stay focused on my ultimate goal of reaching nationals. Evan and Robbie’s legacy is a powerful motivator for me. They lived with incredible passion and resilience, and I want to honor their memory by embracing life with the same determination. Their passing has given me a profound sense of purpose, and I’m committed to living in a way that makes them proud. To support my education and athletic goals, I will need to carefully manage my finances. I plan to apply for scholarships and financial aid, and I will explore part-time job opportunities that allow me to balance work with my academic and athletic commitments. With a clear budget and a focus on minimizing unnecessary expenses, I can ensure I’m financially prepared for the challenges ahead. In the near future, I will finalize my college applications, secure financial aid, and start preparing for the transition to SVSU. Once I’m enrolled, I will focus on balancing my academic schedule with intense training. Success won’t come easily, but with careful planning, hard work, and persistence, I am confident that I can achieve my goals. Ultimately, my aspirations are not just about personal success—they are about honoring the memory of my brothers. By excelling in academics and athletics, I will continue their legacy and strive to make a lasting impact, just as they did in their own ways. With unwavering dedication and support from those around me, I will work tirelessly to make my dreams a reality.

Why Sam Kendricks is My Favorite Team USA Athlete As a prospective college vaulter, I admire Sam Kendricks not only for his athletic accomplishments but also for his character and inspiring journey. Kendricks, a two-time World Champion and Olympic bronze medalist in pole vaulting, represents the epitome of dedication, humility, and sportsmanship. He has set a standard for athletes like me to aspire to, both on and off the field. One of the reasons Kendricks stands out to me is his impressive athletic career. As the American record holder and a multiple-time U.S. National Champion, Kendricks consistently pushes the boundaries of his discipline. His smooth technique, explosive power, and mental focus serve as a masterclass in vaulting excellence. Watching his performances motivates me to train harder and strive for technical perfection. Kendricks demonstrates that success in pole vaulting requires a balance of physical ability and mental toughness, balance I aim to emulate in my own career. Beyond his accomplishments, Kendricks' character sets him apart. Known for his humility and sportsmanship, he exudes respect for his fellow competitors and the sport itself. At the 2016 Olympics, Kendricks became a fan favorite for pausing mid-run to stand at attention during the national anthem gesture that showcased his patriotism and respect for his country. Acts like these reflect a man of integrity, someone who values principles over personal gain. As a young athlete, I look up to Kendricks not just as a role model for competition but as a model for how to carry oneself with dignity. Kendricks' background also resonates deeply with me because, like him, I was coached by my father. His journey from being coached by his dad in Mississippi to becoming an international champion inspires me every day. Having my father as my coach has created a special bond and a foundation of trust and support, much like Kendricks experienced. Knowing that someone with a similar background achieved so much in the sport gives me confidence that my dreams are also within reach. Sam Kendricks is my favorite Team USA athlete because he exemplifies everything I hope to achieve as a vaulter and as a person. His exceptional career, strong character, and inspiring journey motivate me to be the best athlete I can be while maintaining humility and respect for others. As I pursue my dream of competing at the collegiate level, I will continue to look up to him as a guiding light in the sport.
