Bio

My name is Coi, and I'm a senior at Epic Charter Schools in Oklahoma City, OK. I'm proud to rank in the top 0.55% of my class (16th out of 2,846 students) and will graduate with honors from the National Honors Society, along with an associate degree in Science from Oklahoma Christian University. After graduation, I plan to attend the University of Oklahoma to study Pre-Dentistry and minor in Business, with the goal of becoming a dentist through OU's Health and Science Center. I chose dentistry because, as a child, I often found myself in the dental chair despite regular brushing and flossing. This personal experience gives me a deep understanding of what my future clients may go through, and I want to be a compassionate and supportive dentist. In my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, singing, dancing, and, of course, sleeping. I also love tutoring and reading to kids at my local library or online. I believe I am a strong candidate for scholarships due to my politeness, stability, and hope for the future. I always express gratitude, and anyone who supports me will receive a personal thank-you letter. Coming from a semi-low-income household, any financial assistance will greatly help me with OU's tuition, room, board, and other expenses. Lastly, receiving scholarships will restore hope and motivation after tirelessly applying for weeks. Thank you for your time and consideration!

My faith in God has been the foundation of my strength, resilience, and purpose throughout my life. It has shaped who I am today and guided me through moments of uncertainty, adversity, and triumph. My faith has helped me see challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities to grow, reminding me that with God, all things are possible. One of the most defining moments where my faith sustained me was when I decided to pursue an associate degree in Science alongside my high school studies. The workload was overwhelming, and I often doubted my ability to keep up with the demands. However, my faith reminded me to trust God’s willpower over mine and lean on Him for strength. Through prayer, scripture, and perseverance, I was able to overcome my fears, stay disciplined, and achieve success. It taught me that when I rely on God, He equips me with everything I need to fulfill His will for my life. My faith has also guided me in helping others. I believe in the biblical principle of putting God first. For instance, I’ve supported friends in their personal and spiritual growth, whether by studying the Bible with them, helping them overcome challenges, or encouraging them to reach their goals. These moments have shown me that God works through us to touch the lives of others, and this belief has fueled my passion for service and mentorship. As I prepare to enter the field of dentistry, my faith will continue to play a significant role in how I approach my career. I see dentistry as more than a profession—it’s a ministry to serve others by improving their health and confidence. My faith will guide me in treating each patient with compassion, integrity, and respect, ensuring that every person who walks through my doors feels valued and cared for. Additionally, my desire to open a dental firm that provides opportunities for minority groups stems from my belief in equality. I also believe that my faith will help me remain grounded and resilient in the face of challenges. Dentistry is a demanding field, and there will undoubtedly be difficult days. However, my faith reminds me that God is my source of strength and that I can cast all my anxieties on Him because He cares for me (1 Peter 5:7). This assurance will help me stay focused on my purpose and trust that God’s grace is sufficient for me in every situation. Ultimately, my faith shapes my vision for the future. I want to make a positive impact on the world by reflecting God’s love in everything I do—through my work, my relationships, and my service to others. By trusting in Him, I know I can achieve my goals and inspire others to see that with faith, perseverance, and kindness, anything is possible.

My name is Coi, and I am a senior at Epic Charter Schools in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Ranked 8 out of 3,520 students with 30 credits, I have worked hard to balance academic excellence with personal growth. By the time I graduate, I will have earned an Honors diploma, recognition from the National Honor Society, and an associate degree in Science from Oklahoma Christian University. These accomplishments reflect my dedication, perseverance, and strong work ethic, but they are just the beginning of what I hope to achieve. My goal is to become a dentist and open a dental firm that not only provides exceptional care but also serves as a source of opportunity for underserved and minority communities. Growing up, I struggled with dental health despite consistent care, which sparked my passion for dentistry and taught me the importance of accessible oral health care. I want to bring diversity to the field and inspire others by showing them that their dreams are valid, no matter their background. My dental firm will also focus on providing career opportunities to minority groups who often face barriers to employment in professional fields. By implementing a training program that prioritizes potential over prior experience, I aim to foster growth and success for individuals who may not have been given a chance elsewhere. My business will serve as a space where people can build their confidence, gain valuable skills, and see themselves succeed in ways they may not have thought possible. Beyond my career aspirations, I am deeply passionate about helping others and making a positive impact in my community. I have consistently worked to uplift those around me, whether by supporting friends in overcoming personal struggles or encouraging classmates to achieve their goals. For instance, I helped a friend who wanted to grow closer to God by working with her daily to study the Bible and overcome challenges such as envy and jealousy. I also assisted another friend who had fallen behind in school by creating a schedule to help her catch up and motivating her to stay focused. These experiences have strengthened my desire to serve others and make a difference wherever I can. I believe I should be selected for this scholarship because of my unwavering commitment to academic success, my dedication to helping others, and my drive to create meaningful change in the world. I have demonstrated my ability to overcome challenges, manage a rigorous workload, and lead by example, all of which are qualities I will carry into my future endeavors. This scholarship would help me take the next step in my journey by pursuing an undergraduate degree in Pre-Dentistry and a minor in Business at the University of Oklahoma. From there, I plan to transition into OU’s Health and Science Center to earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. With the education and resources this scholarship would provide, I will work tirelessly to improve my community by offering accessible dental care, creating opportunities for others, and showing people from minority backgrounds that they, too, can achieve greatness. My dream is not only to succeed but to inspire others to do the same.

Adversity has shaped me into a stronger, more determined individual who embraces challenges with resilience. One of the most defining adversities I’ve faced was convincing my father to let me pursue an associate degree in Science while still in high school. This decision wasn’t just about academics; it was about proving my capability to handle an incredibly demanding workload while pursuing my long-term goals. The journey wasn’t easy, but it taught me the importance of perseverance, time management, and self-belief. At the end of my sophomore year, I learned about TEL, a program that would allow me to take college courses alongside my high school curriculum. Excited by the opportunity to earn my associate degree early, I approached my dad to discuss my plan. Initially, he hesitated, expressing concern about the overwhelming workload and whether I could handle the pressure. At first, his doubts shook my confidence, and I questioned whether I was taking on too much. However, I realized that this was a chance to prove to both myself and my family that I was capable of achieving greatness through hard work and determination. After many conversations, I convinced my dad to let me pursue this goal. But the challenge had only just begun. To graduate with my degree on time, I needed to complete 22 college courses in addition to my high school requirements. My junior year was the most challenging, as I had to complete 10 college courses in one year. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed, balancing assignments, exams, and extracurriculars, all while trying to maintain my sanity. To overcome this adversity, I developed a strict schedule and stuck to it. I broke down my tasks into manageable pieces and prioritized deadlines to stay on track. I also learned to lean on my support system — my teachers, advisors, and family — for guidance and encouragement when things felt overwhelming. Over time, I built strong time-management skills and found a balance between academics and personal life. By the end of my junior year, I had completed all my courses with outstanding grades, earning all A’s and one B. The following summer, I earned A’s in two more college courses and am now on track to graduate with an associate degree and Honors recognition from the National Honor Society. This experience shaped me by teaching me how to face challenges head-on and remain steadfast in the face of doubt, whether it came from others or myself. It gave me the confidence to trust my abilities and the discipline to execute my plans effectively. It also showed me the importance of determination and belief in the value of one’s dreams. If I could offer advice to someone facing similar adversity, it would be to trust in their ability to rise above challenges and never let fear dictate their decisions. Break the challenge into smaller, manageable steps, and celebrate progress along the way. Lean on your support system for encouragement and don’t hesitate to ask for help. Lastly, remind yourself of why you started and keep that goal in focus. Adversity is only temporary, but the strength and growth it fosters will last a lifetime!

Creating a legacy involves leaving a lasting impact that positively affects others, and I hope to achieve this through my passion for dentistry, my commitment to service, and my belief in equality and opportunity. My future legacy will not only reflect my success but also the lives I’ve touched, the communities I’ve uplifted, and the doors I’ve opened for others. One of my main goals is to establish a dental practice that goes beyond providing care but serve as a of hope for minority groups and underserved communities. Growing up, I struggled with cavities despite brushing and flossing regularly, and this experience inspired my journey into dentistry. I’ve come to see oral health as more than a medical necessity; it’s an opportunity to give others confidence and improve their overall quality of life. My dental firm will focus on making dental care accessible and inclusive, creating a welcoming space for patients of all backgrounds. However, my legacy extends beyond dental care. I plan to create a business that prioritizes diversity in the workplace. I understand the challenges minorities face when entering professional fields, often being required to meet extra qualifications that can discourage talented individuals. To counter this, my firm will offer job opportunities based on potential rather than experience. I’ll implement a training program that allows employees to learn on the job and develop their skills under my guidance. This approach will not only provide career opportunities but also inspire confidence in those who might not have seen themselves succeeding in such a field. My goal is to show people of color and other minorities that success is possible and that their dreams are valid. Beyond my career aspirations, I strive to shine my light through acts of kindness, mentorship, and a commitment to uplifting others. Throughout high school, I’ve made it a priority to help those around me. For example, I supported a friend who wanted to grow closer to God by working with her daily to study the Bible, memorize scriptures, and overcome personal struggles. I also helped another friend who had fallen behind in school by creating a daily schedule and encouraging her to stay on track. Shining my light also means using my voice and platform to advocate for equality. I’ve always dreamed of creating a world where minority groups have access to the same opportunities as everyone else. Through my dental practice and community involvement, I’ll actively work to break down barriers and promote inclusivity. Whether it’s by mentoring young students interested in dentistry or hosting free dental clinics for low-income families, I want to leave a legacy of compassion and service. In the end, my legacy won’t be measured by my personal achievements but by the impact I’ve made on others. I hope to be remembered as someone who not only succeeded but also lifted others along the way. By building a business rooted in equality, spreading kindness, and leading with integrity, I’ll create a legacy that inspires and empowers future generations this scholarships will help me towards that goal by funding my ever so long journey to becoming a dentist!

During the first semester of my senior year, I faced one of the most challenging periods of my academic journey. Having taken on a rigorous workload to complete my Associate’s Degree in Science while balancing my high school curriculum, I found myself struggling to keep up. Stress began to take its toll as I juggled work for the first time, church responsibilities, and my studies all at once. Despite my best intentions, I allowed myself to fall behind in my college courses, and for the first time, I truly doubted whether I could finish on time. This was a deeply humbling experience. I had always prided myself on being organized and diligent, but the weight of my responsibilities left me feeling overwhelmed and defeated. I started questioning whether I had taken on too much, whether I was capable of meeting the goals I had set for myself. In my moment of doubt, I turned to my faith for guidance and strength. Prayer became my refuge. Each night, I would sit quietly, meditating on my frustrations and fears to God, asking for the wisdom and endurance to navigate this difficult time. I hoped God would assist me not just for the ability to finish my courses, but for the clarity to see a way forward and the strength to persevere. Through faith, I found a renewed sense of peace and determination. I reminded myself that God had carried me through challenges before and that He wouldn’t lead me to a path I couldn’t handle. With this mindset, I began to take action. I revisited my schedule and created a more structured plan, prioritizing assignments and setting realistic goals for each day. I also learned to say no to additional commitments and distractions, recognizing that I needed to focus on the tasks at hand. Applying myself fully to my coursework required discipline and endurance. There were late nights, early mornings, and moments when I wanted to give up, but I leaned on my faith to push through. My faith in God along with the classes provided by my church became a comfort during moments of exhaustion, reminding me that I wasn’t alone in this journey. With time, effort, and God’s guidance, I was able to catch up on my courses and complete the semester on time. It wasn’t easy, but the experience taught me the importance of resilience and the power of faith in overcoming challenges. This obstacle shaped me in many ways. It reminded me that setbacks are not failures—they are opportunities to grow and rely on God’s strength. It also deepened my appreciation for perseverance and time management. Most importantly, it reinforced my belief that faith isn’t just about asking for help; it’s about trusting God’s plan and doing the work to move forward. Looking back, I’m grateful for the lessons this experience taught me. It strengthened my faith, refined my character, and prepared me for future challenges. As I continue my journey, I carry with me the knowledge that faith, paired with effort and endurance, can overcome any obstacle. And if none of this matters — I know one thing is for sure — NEVER slack off and ALWAYS put God first!

My ultimate goal is to become a dentist and open a dental practice that focuses on diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. I want to create a practice that not only provides excellent dental care but also offers job opportunities to individuals from minority groups who may face systemic barriers in the workplace. To achieve this goal, I have developed a detailed plan that encompasses education, financial preparation, and strategic plan. The first step in achieving my goal is completing my undergraduate degree in Pre-Dentistry with a minor in Business at the University of Oklahoma (OU). Following that, I will transition to OU’s Health and Science Center to earn my Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. This path will take approximately eight years in total: four years for my bachelor’s degree and four for dental school. During this time, I plan to use resources such as financial aid, scholarships, and part-time work to fund my education and minimize debt. Additionally, I intend to gain hands-on experience by shadowing dentists, interning at clinics, and participating in community service programs related to oral health. These experiences will not only enhance my skills but also provide insight into running a successful practice. Starting a dental practice requires significant financial investment. The estimated cost of opening a practice ranges from $250,000 to $500,000. This includes purchasing equipment, leasing office space, hiring staff, and covering initial operating expenses. To prepare, I plan to save money during my educational journey and apply for small business loans and grants tailored for healthcare professionals. I also intend to explore programs like the Small Business Administration (SBA) loans, which offer favorable terms for startups. Additionally, I will utilize my business education to create a comprehensive financial plan that includes projections for revenue, expenses, and growth. I understand that building a successful practice will require more than financial resources. I will need mentorship from experienced dentists who can provide guidance on clinical skills and business operations. I also plan to join professional organizations like the American Dental Association (ADA) and attend conferences to stay informed about advancements in the field. Furthermore, I will use technology to streamline operations, such as electronic health records (EHR) systems and digital marketing tools to attract patients. Partnering with community organizations and schools will also help me build relationships and establish my practice as a trusted resource in the community. Upon completing dental school, I plan to work as an associate dentist for three to five years. This will allow me to gain practical experience, build a patient base, and save money for my practice. During this time, I will also research locations where there is a high demand for dental services but limited access to care, particularly in underserved communities. After gaining sufficient experience and resources, I will open my practice. My long-term plan includes expanding services to include mentorship programs for aspiring dental professionals and community outreach initiatives to educate people about oral health. In summary, my goal of becoming a dentist and opening an inclusive dental practice is driven by my passion for helping others and addressing disparities in healthcare. Through careful planning, financial preparation, and strategic use of resources, I am confident in my ability to achieve this vision and make a lasting impact on my community!

As a child, I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. I’ve always loved the idea of helping animals, and I admired veterinarians for their ability to heal creatures who couldn’t communicate their pain. I imagined myself in a white coat, surrounded by cats, dogs, and other small animals, making a difference in their lives. However, that dream quickly collided with reality. While I loved animals, I realized I was terrified of snakes, spiders, and larger animals. The thought of working with creatures that could bite, sting, or even injure me was unsettling. I also learned that becoming a veterinarian required years of school and advanced degrees. At the time, the idea of spending so many years in college felt overwhelming. I wanted a career that allowed me to help others without being in school forever or constantly confronting my fears. As I grew older, I discovered a new passion: dentistry. My journey into this field was shaped by my own struggles with oral health as a child. Despite brushing and flossing diligently, I often dealt with cavities, which left me feeling frustrated and confused. My dentist became a trusted guide, patiently explaining how diet, technique, and genetics could affect oral health. Over time, I came to appreciate the science behind dentistry and the way it empowered me to take control of my health. Dentistry appealed to me for many reasons. It allowed me to help others, just as I had always wanted to as a child. But instead of working with animals, I could focus on people, improving their health and confidence in tangible ways. Dentistry also offered a balance between hands-on care and science, giving me the opportunity to use my skills to make an immediate difference. Most importantly, it didn’t require me to face my fears of snakes or large animals! My decision to pursue dentistry was solidified during my high school years. While completing ten college courses in a single year, I learned the importance of hard work, time management, and resilience. These skills gave me the confidence to take on the rigorous academic journey required to become a dentist. I also gained a deeper understanding of how education can be a tool for empowerment, both for myself and others. Today, my childhood dream of helping others remains intact, but it has taken a new form. As a future dentist, I aim to make a meaningful impact in my community by opening a practice that focuses on diversity and inclusion. My goal is to provide opportunities for minority groups, offering mentorship and jobs to those with little or no experience. I want to create an environment where everyone, regardless of background, feels valued and supported. Looking back, I see how my childhood dream of being a veterinarian shaped who I am today. It taught me the importance of compassion, service, and resilience. While my path has changed, my commitment to helping others remains stronger than ever. I’m excited to use my education and experiences to inspire others and create a brighter future for my community.

My interest in dentistry was sparked at a young age by a deeply personal experience. Growing up, I struggled with persistent cavities despite diligently brushing and flossing. I mean okay, maybe I ate a little too much candy — but who doesn’t as an child? Each dental visit left me with questions: Why wasn’t my effort enough? What could I do differently? My dentist took the time to explain the science behind oral health, teaching me about factors like diet, genetics, and proper technique. I remember being captivated by how something as seemingly small as dental care could have such a significant impact on overall health and confidence. One experience that solidified my passion occurred during my senior year of high school. My dental hygienist and dentist confided in me about their own struggles with oral hygiene and her reluctance to visit the dentist out of embarrassment. They had too once felt judged and misunderstood, which reminded me of my own insecurities as a child. This struck a nerve for me because here I was sitting in a dental office with the dentist telling me “I still get cavities too”. At that moment, I felt a sense of comfort and understanding from my peers around me. I knew them I wanted to work here! In this setting. Around the same time, I began observing my dentist and dental hygienist, which gave me firsthand exposure to the profession. I saw how dentistry goes beyond treating teeth; it’s about building relationships, educating patients, and improving lives. Not only this, but it’s all done with precision, accuracy, and speed. These experiences have shown me that dentistry is more than just a career—it’s a way to serve others. I want to create an environment where patients feel valued and understood, especially those from minority communities who may face systemic barriers to care. My goal is to attend the University of Oklahoma Heath and Sciences Center and someday open a dental practice that not only provides high-quality care but also offers mentorship and job opportunities to individuals with little to no experience. Dentistry combines my love for science, my desire to help others, and my passion for promoting equality. It’s a field where I can make a tangible difference in people’s lives while addressing disparities in access to care. Every patient I treat will be a reminder of why I chose this path: to heal, to educate, and to inspire.
    First-Gen Flourishing Scholarship
At the end of my sophomore year of high school, I decided to take on a challenge that would forever shape my outlook on education and personal growth. After much persuasion, I convinced my dad to allow me to pursue an Associate’s Degree in Science through TEL, a rigorous dual-enrollment program. This path required me to complete 10 college courses, each year, alongside my high school curriculum, all while maintaining my responsibilities at home and in extracurricular activities. The decision was daunting, and I often found myself questioning whether I could handle the overwhelming workload. The pressure of meeting deadlines, acing exams, and juggling multiple syllabi left me feeling nervous and uncertain. At times, I felt the weight of the decision I had made. But instead of backing down, I leaned into the challenge. I knew that this was an opportunity to prove to myself what I was capable of. To manage my responsibilities, I developed a detailed schedule that broke down every task, assignment, and study session. I dedicated early mornings and late nights to studying, ensuring I maximized every moment of the day. Over time, I grew more confident in my ability to handle the workload. I also learned to prioritize self-care, creating a better balance between academic commitments and personal time. By the end of my junior year, I had completed all 10 courses with stellar grades, including all A’s and one B (that science class was something)! That summer, I took two additional college courses, earning A’s in both, and as a senior, I continued to excel. I am now currently standing at a 4.5 GPA while being in the top 0.55% of my graduating class. I plan to graduate with Honors, Valedictorian, and my regular diploma alongside my Associates of Science! This experience wasn’t just about earning credits — it was about overcoming self-doubt, building resilience, and pushing beyond what I thought were my limits. This journey shaped my personal growth in many ways. I learned the value of persistence, the importance of planning, and the power of a positive mindset. Every challenge I faced became a stepping stone to a stronger, more disciplined version of myself. Most importantly, I discovered that success isn’t about being the smartest person in the room, but it’s about being the one who refuses to give up. This experience also reshaped how I view education. I came to see it not just as a pathway to personal achievement but as a tool for empowerment and change. Education is transformative. I unlocked doors, broke barriers, and created new, exciting opportunities. It gave me the confidence to dream bigger and the skills to turn those dreams into reality. I plan to use my education to make a lasting impact on my community. As a future dentist, I aim to open a dental practice that prioritizes diversity and inclusion. I want to provide employment opportunities for minority groups, especially those with little to no prior experience, and offer mentorship to help them thrive. My goal is to create a workplace where people feel empowered, valued, and supported. Through this journey, I hope to inspire others to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams, no matter how challenging they may seem. Challenges are not roadblocks but rather are stepping stones to growth, and with determination, anything is possible!
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
From a young age, I’ve been drawn to the field of dentistry because of my own personal experiences. Despite brushing and flossing regularly as a child, I struggled with cavities, which made me realize how crucial proper dental care and education are. These experiences sparked my interest in dentistry, but my motivation grew as I recognized the lack of diversity in the field. I decided I wanted to pursue a career that not only ensures healthy smiles but also creates opportunities for underrepresented groups. My ultimate goal is to earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of Oklahoma’s Health and Science Center. I plan to open my own dental practice that emphasizes providing opportunities for minority groups. Many individuals in these communities face barriers such as limited access to education and work experience, and I want to help break those barriers. My practice will focus on hiring individuals based on their performance and potential rather than demanding extensive qualifications that many may not have had the chance to pursue. I also desire to inspire others who look like me to believe in their potential. Diversity in the dental field is limited, and I want to show people of my color and other minority groups that success is achievable. By being a role model, I hope to encourage others to enter the field and create a ripple effect of change. Achieving this goal requires not just passion but also dedication, discipline, and the ability to overcome challenges—skills I’ve cultivated throughout my academic journey. As a senior at Epic Charter Schools, I’ve worked tirelessly to earn an associate degree in Science from Oklahoma Christian University alongside my high school diploma. Balancing 22 college courses with my high school curriculum taught me invaluable time management skills and perseverance. In addition to academic accomplishments, I’ve embraced opportunities to serve and uplift others. Whether it’s encouraging a friend to stay on track in school or helping another deepen their faith, I’ve found fulfillment in empowering those around me. These experiences have shaped my commitment to fostering confidence and growth, qualities I aim to bring into my dental practice. In summary, I’ve chosen dentistry not just to ensure brighter smiles but to make meaningful strides toward equality and representation in the field. Through my practice, I hope to create opportunities for others while inspiring them to believe in their own capabilities. My personal experiences, dedication to service, and academic achievements have prepared me to achieve this vision and make a lasting impact.

I am passionate about service, education, and empowering others, especially minority groups and youth in my community. As a senior at Epic Charter Schools in Oklahoma City, I have embraced opportunities to lead and inspire others through academic excellence and community involvement. Ranked in the top 0.55% of my class, I am on track to graduate with Honors recognition from the National Honor Society and an associate degree in Science from Oklahoma Christian University. My commitment to leadership is reflected in my role on Epic’s Student Council, where I work to foster inclusivity by organizing events that build school communities and uplift students. With this being said, beyond academics and leadership roles, I actively help others in my personal life. For instance, I assisted a friend struggling in school by creating a daily schedule to keep her on track. Another friend sought to strengthen her faith, so I supported her by reading the Bible together, memorizing scripture, and studying spiritual lessons. These experiences have fueled my desire to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives, particularly by empowering them to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Furthermore, as I prepare to attend the University of Oklahoma to pursue a degree in Pre-Dentistry with a minor in Journalism, I face significant financial challenges. I come from a low middle-income family, where resources are limited, especially as I aim to pursue advanced education in dentistry. My goal is to attend OU’s Health and Science Center to earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. While my family is incredibly supportive of my goals, scholarships and financial aid are essential for covering tuition, textbooks, housing, and other expenses. This assistance will enable me to focus on my studies and achieve my long-term goal of becoming a dentist. My ultimate dream is to open a dental practice that provides job opportunities for minorities and individuals with little prior experience, helping to create more diversity in the dental field and inspire others to succeed. In addition to this, I am deeply committed to the safety and well-being of children and youth in my community, both in person and online. Bullying and cyberbullying are significant issues that require proactive measures to address. I acknowledge that a smile is a big part of a person’s look and a beautiful smile can help limit bullying. I participate in discussions at school on how to educate youth about the importance of empathy, the impact of bullying, and how to stand up for themselves and others. I emphasize kindness and inclusivity in every interaction. I also utilize Epic’s Student Council to organize activities and initiatives that foster an environment where everyone feels included and respected. These efforts ensure students feel safe to express themselves and grow. Lastly, I make sure to treat others the way I want to be treated. Whether in person or online I make sure to be very respectful and consider of how my words affect others. I apologize when I offend and have a zero tolerance for bullying. If I see it I stop or report it. Through these efforts, I strive to protect youth in my community and provide them with tools to thrive in a safe, supportive environment.

Life has been a series of challenges that have shaped me into a determined, resilient individual. One of the most significant challenges I faced was moving out at 18 in October 2024 to create a better life for myself. While this decision allowed me to take control of my future and pursue my dreams, it also brought with it financial and emotional struggles that have tested my character. Moving out on my own was a bold step toward breaking the cycle of mental struggle and abuse, but it also meant taking on significant responsibilities at a young age. Since leaving home, I have been managing my living expenses, school-related costs, and other necessities on my own. Balancing a full academic schedule as a senior in high school while working to make ends meet has been incredibly challenging. I am currently ranked in the top 1% of students at Epic Charter Schools and on track to graduate with Honors recognition from the National Honors Society and an associate degree in Science from Oklahoma Christian University. Achieving these milestones while managing financial stress has not been easy, but it has taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, time management, and perseverance. One of the biggest challenges has been affording the cost of higher education. As I plan to attend the University of Oklahoma to pursue an undergraduate degree in Pre-Dentistry with a minor in Business, the financial burden of tuition, books, and living expenses looms large. Despite working hard, I struggle to save enough money to cover these costs on my own. My name is Coi, and I am a senior at Epic Charter Schools in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Throughout my academic career, I have prioritized excellence, discipline, and a commitment to making a difference in the world. I am currently ranked top 1% of my class and am on track to graduate with Honors recognition from the National Honors Society and an associate degree in Science from Oklahoma Christian University. My journey has been both challenging and rewarding, shaped by a strong desire to succeed and create opportunities for others. Education has always been a cornerstone of my goals, and I plan to continue pursuing academic excellence as I work toward becoming a dentist. I will begin my journey at the University of Oklahoma, where I intend to major in Pre-Dentistry and minor in Business. This combination of studies will provide me with the scientific foundation and entrepreneurial skills needed to build a successful dental practice. After earning my undergraduate degree, I plan to attend the OU Health and Science Center to obtain my Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. My ultimate goal is to open a dental firm that not only provides quality care but also serves as a platform for creating opportunities for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds. The path to this point in my life has not been without its challenges. One of the most significant obstacles I faced was convincing my father to allow me to pursue an associate degree in science while completing high school. He initially doubted whether I could handle the rigorous workload of taking 10 college courses alongside my high school curriculum. At the time, I was overwhelmed by the thought of balancing both responsibilities, but I felt a strong determination to prove myself. To manage this challenge, I developed a detailed schedule to stay organized and prioritized my tasks daily. The process required a tremendous amount of discipline, focus, and sacrifice. Despite moments of doubt, I pushed through the workload and successfully completed all 10 college courses, earning mostly A’s and one B. That experience taught me the importance of perseverance, effective time management, and self-confidence. I learned that even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges, determination and careful planning can lead to success. This experience also instilled in me a sense of resilience that I carry into every aspect of my life. It showed me that obstacles are not roadblocks but opportunities to grow and learn. Overcoming this challenge helped me develop the skills I will need to navigate future academic and professional challenges as I work toward my dream of becoming a dentist. Looking ahead, I am excited to use my education to make a positive impact on the world. Dentistry is my passion, not only because of my personal experiences with oral health but also because it offers a unique opportunity to address inequalities in healthcare and employment. I want to use my future dental practice to empower others, particularly individuals from minority groups, by providing opportunities for meaningful employment and personal growth. Thank you for considering my application. My educational goals are more than aspirations—they are a way for me to create meaningful change in my community and inspire others to overcome their own obstacles and achieve their dreams.
    Chris Ford Scholarship
My name is Coi, and I am a senior at Epic Charter Schools in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Throughout my academic journey, I have prioritized excellence, service, and leadership. I am ranked top 1% of my class and I am on track to graduate with Honors and an associate degree in Science from Oklahoma Christian University. Balancing my high school curriculum with 10+ college courses has taught me resilience, time management, and the value of hard work—skills I will carry with me into my future. Beyond academics, I am passionate about helping others and creating inclusive spaces. As a member of my school’s Student Council, I take pride in a welcoming environment for my peers, encouraging them to engage in activities and build confidence. I’ve also supported friends by offering academic guidance, helping them overcome personal and educational challenges. I aspire to become a dentist and use my profession to address inequalities in healthcare and employment. My interest in dentistry began as a child when I struggled with cavities despite maintaining good oral hygiene. That experience sparked a desire to learn more about oral health and its role in overall well-being. Over time, my passion evolved into a vision for creating change in underserved communities, particularly minority groups that often face barriers to accessing quality dental care and career opportunities. My long-term goal is to open a dental firm that provides exceptional care while also serving as a platform for empowerment. I want my office to be a place where individuals from underrepresented backgrounds can gain meaningful employment, even without extensive prior experience. By focusing on their potential and providing hands-on training, I hope to help these individuals build confidence and develop valuable skills that can open doors to greater opportunities. Through this approach, I aim to bring more diversity to the dental field and show others that success is attainable, regardless of their starting point. In addition to addressing employment disparities, I want to educate my patients and their communities about the importance of oral health. Many health issues stem from a lack of awareness or access to preventive care, particularly in underserved areas. By offering education and resources, I can help individuals take control of their health and improve their quality of life. To achieve these goals, I plan to attend the University of Oklahoma to pursue an undergraduate degree in Pre-Dentistry and a minor in Business. This combination of studies will equip me with the scientific knowledge and entrepreneurial skills needed to establish and manage my dental firm effectively. After completing my undergraduate degree, I intend to transition to OU’s Health and Science Center to earn my Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. Along the way, I will seek internships, shadowing opportunities, and community service projects that allow me to gain hands-on experience and deepen my understanding of patient care. Making a positive impact on the world means creating opportunities and addressing inequities wherever I can. Through dentistry, I hope to leave a legacy that extends beyond treating patients. I want to inspire others from minority backgrounds to believe in their potential and pursue their dreams, just as I have worked hard to pursue mine. My career will not only be a reflection of my passion for oral health but also a testament to my commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society. Thank you for considering my application. I am eager to continue my journey toward making a meaningful difference in the world through my future career!

    Smith & Moore Uplift Scholarship
Pursuing a career in dentistry, which is part of the STEM field of health sciences, will allow me to contribute to society in meaningful ways, particularly by addressing both healthcare and social inequalities. Dentistry is grounded in science and technology, requiring expertise in biology, anatomy, chemistry, and the latest medical advancements. As a dentist, I will be able to display my scientific knowledge to improve oral health while also tackling broader social issues like access to care and workforce diversity. One of my main goals is to open a dental firm that focuses on serving minority groups. Historically, minorities face barriers to accessing affordable healthcare, including dental services. I have also noticed in a lot of the dental offices I've attended, that there aren't a lot of people my color or other minority groups (Native Americans, Latino Americans, etc.) To address this, I plan to offer more affordable appointments to ensure that individuals from underrepresented communities receive the dental care they need. By reducing the cost of dental appointments, I hope to improve oral health outcomes for minorities who often experience higher rates of untreated dental issues due to financial constraints. In addition to providing affordable dental care, I aim to create job opportunities for minority workers, offering positions that do not require a lot of work (sometimes none depending on the situation) experience. Under my supervision, these workers will have the chance to gain valuable experience and skills in a professional setting. This approach will not only provide them with employment but also empower them to build careers in the dental field. I believe that, with proper training and a strong work ethic, anyone can succeed, regardless of their background or level of experience. By providing these opportunities, I hope to break down the barriers that often prevent minorities from entering healthcare professions, particularly in dentistry, where diversity is still lacking. My motivation to pursue this path is comes from my strong desire to bring more diversity to the dental field. I want to show people of my color and other minority groups that success is not only possible but also reachable in fields like dentistry, which have historically been less effective. Growing up, I struggled with cavities despite maintaining good dental hygiene. This year was actually the first time, in a year, I went to the dentist and had no cavities (embarrassing I know). Now, as I work toward my goal, I want to inspire others from minority backgrounds to consider careers in STEM, especially in healthcare, where their voices and perspectives are greatly needed. Through my dental firm, I will be able to serve as a role model for future generations of minority students who may not see many people who look like us in these fields. By proving that it is possible to suceed in a profession that requires scientific rigor and technical skill, I aim to inspire others to pursue their dreams and challenge the status quo. In pursuing dentistry, I believe I can make a lasting impact on society by improving access to quality dental care and creating opportunities for minority workers. By aiding in the development of diversity in the dental field, I know I can improve patient care and ultimately build a more inclusive and equitable society. My passion for dentistry, combined with my commitment to uplifting underserved communities, drives my desire to make a difference both as a healthcare professional and as a leader in creating opportunities for others.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
From a young age, my personal experience with dental health has driven my passion for dentistry. Despite brushing and flossing regularly, I often struggled with cavities, leaving me frustrated and curious about why my proper dental care wasn’t enough. This year is the first time in a year I went to the dentist and didn't have a cavity (I know embarrassing). This challenge and curisoity sparked my interest in understanding oral health, and over time, it led to my decision to pursue a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree at the University of Oklahoma Health and Science Center. My desire to become a dentist goes beyond my childhood experiences — I want to use my career to make a meaningful impact in the dental field and the lives of others. One of my main goals is to open my own dental firm, where I can provide opportunities to minority groups (African Americans, Native Americans, Latino Americans, etc.). I want to create an environment where individuals from a variety of unique backgrounds can gain employment and valuable experience, even if they have little work experience. As long as they demonstrate a strong work ethic and willingness to learn, they will have the chance to succeed under my supervision (cause I'm not trying to get sued) until I see they do well enough to work on their own. I believe this approach will not only bring diversity to the dental workforce but also empower and inspire individuals who may otherwise struggle to break into the field due to a lack of experience. By prioritizing diversity and inclusion, I aim to challenge the barriers that prevent minorities from achieving success in professions like dentistry. I’ve seen firsthand how dental offices lack diversity; that lack has even led to my discouragement at one point in time. I want to show people of my color and other minority groups that it’s possible to excel in any field, regardless of their background. Through my dental firm, I hope to inspire others to believe in their potential and realize that success is attainable for everyone, no matter the challenges they face. My motivation comes from both personal and professional experiences. On a personal level, I want to prove to myself and others that through hard work, dedication, and a desire to make a difference, and is worth it in the long run. On a professional level, I am committed to making dentistry more accessible, equitable (by lowering the price of dental care if possible), and diverse. In pursuing this path, I am determined to not only become a successful dentist but also to make a lasting difference in the lives of those around me. I am excited to bring my vision to life and create a dental practice that serves as a model of resilience, power, determination, and excellence to the next generation to come.
Hester Richardson Powell Memorial Service Scholarship
Resilience is not just about just enduring challenges. It's about using the experiences learned from those challenges to lift others and inspire them to overcome their own obstacles. One of the most significant ways I have demonstrated resilience was by helping my now best friend who was struggling with both her faith and her academic progress. Through this time of tribulation, I not only strengthened my relationship with God but I also became a source of hope and guidance for someone else. My relationship with the world and the individuals around me are all centered around Christ. He gives me structure, strength, clarity, and a sense of purpose, especially in difficult times. My foundation in Him allowed me to be a positive example for a friend who was searching for a deeper connection with Christ. She had been struggling with feelings of envy, jealousy, and lust of the flesh — particularly, the challenge of lusting after men she couldn’t have. These emotions grieved her, distracting her from her spiritual and personal goals (she thought she wasn't worthy of God because of the person she was). Despite feeling discouraged, she expressed her desire to grow closer to God, and I knew that Christ would provide me with wisdom to help guide her on that path. We began working together daily. Over the phone, we would read the Bible, memorize scriptures, and watch Christian teachings on YouTube. Frequently, we would reflect on the lessons, and apply them to her life and my life while discussing how to overcome the negative emotions she was dealing with. These frequent discussions soon became more than a Bible study; they became a time of healing and inspiration for her. With every scripture memorized and every class watched, she gained a deeper understanding of God’s Holy Word and how to apply it to her everyday struggles. Slowly, I watched her outgrow the former shell of herself as she began to rebuke those negative feelings, replacing them with wisdom, faith, and trust in God’s plan for her life. At the same time, my best friend was struggling with her academic responsibilities. She had fallen behind in her schoolwork and was feeling overwhelmed, convinced she wouldn’t be able to catch up in time. Knowing how discouraging this could be (as I had slacked off too far before), I worked with her to create a daily schedule that would help her get back on track. The plan was simple but structured —each day, she would tackle specific tasks, breaking her workload into manageable parts. I also provided her with consistent tough love and motivation, reminding her of the goals she had set for herself and the progress she had already made. Throughout this entire period, I made sure to keep up with my own schoolwork and maintain my personal relationship with Christ. I understood that to lead by example, I needed to stay rooted in good ground always. Balancing these responsibilities wasn’t always easy, I had my days and moments, but in the end, Christ picked me up and His resilience in me equipped me with the strength and wisdom to handle it all. As I worked on myself, I was able to inspire my friend to keep pushing forward, both in her faith and her academics. In the end, my friend not only regained some academic footing but also developed a closer relationship with Christ. Watching her transformation was beautiful, and it reminded me of the power of resilience; through God’s grace and guidence, we can inspire others to overcome their challenges and grow stronger in the process.
    Ella's Gift
As a young child, I was always forewarned about dangerous of smoking. For the most part, I took heed to those warning and steered clear of any and all drugs. It was up until my sophomore year of High School that abuse began. At the time, it seemed harmless when my ex-friend offered me a hit from her vape. Being as young and nieve, I hesitantly accepted. If I could go back in time, I would because that one hit marked the beginning of a struggle that would take over various aspects of my life for almost 2 years. What started as a casual experiment quickly turned into a full-blown nicotine addiction. I found myself asking for hits more frequently, to the point where I could not go without vaping and payed her to get me my own vape 2 times. This addiction took a toll on my body and mind. Physically, I experienced constant headaches, nausea, and mood swings. The impact on my heart was also very concerning. I would frequently experience a racing heart and struggled with shortness of breath, which made me feel clostophobic in my own body. Emotionally, I became more irritable and withdrawn, and I found myself increasingly dependent on nicotine to get through the day. However, I knew this lifestyle couldn't persist, especially with my running in Track and Field. At the start of 2023, I made the decision to quit smoking for the sake of my physical health in track. But quitting nicotine was far from easy. The withdrawal symptoms were harsh: My body shook uncontrollably, I felt intense cravings, and I experienced short amounts of depression. There were times when I questioned if I was strong enough to endure these symptoms. Fortunaely, despite the hardship, I was determined to see it through, and after a difficult few months, the symptoms went away. However, this victory was short-lived. Shortly after overcoming my nicotine addiction, I turned to weed as a new escape. Missing the sight of smoke, at first, I smoked twice a day, but over time, that number steadily increased until I was smoking at least five times a day. Weed became an alteration of reality as I used it to cower, numb my emotions, ignore my problems, and find temporary relief. Smoking weed had its own consequences. My ability to focus on schoolwork decreased, and I often found myself unable to concentrate or sit still. There were times when I smoked too much and was scared that I would pass away in my sleep. Yet, these fears never stopped me. This intense feeling of anxiety led to impulsive thoughts that were dangerous, both to myself and others. I realized that I was on a destructive path, and if I did not stop, my life could spiral into an atmosphere I may not ever pull myself from. In November of 2023, I decided to take charge of my life. I realized that I did not want to be defined by my addictions, and I knew I was capable of so much more. The process of quitting weed was as challenging as my journey with nicotine, but I was committed to turning my life around for the better. With the support of my family and friends I began to focus on improving my mental health and well-being. Since quitting, my mental health has improved a lot. The fog that once clouded my mind cleared, allowing me to focus on my educational goals and personal growth. I feel more connected and aware of myself, the world around me, and I am able to approach my studies with clarity and purpose. I have a renewed sense of motivation and determination to succeed academically --- especially as I pursue my career in Dentistry. The freedom and control from substance dependence has opened my eyes to a renewed, refined life, and I am excited to make the most of it. In terms of managing my recovery, I have established a plan that includes staying connected with a strong support system, practicing mindfulness, and prioritizing my mental and physical health. I have learned to recognize triggers and avoid situations that could lead to relapse. Furthermore, I stay engaged in activities that promote my overall well-being, such as exercising, studying, and maintaining a structured daily routine. Keeping myself busy and focused on my goals has proven to be an effective way to manage the temptation to revert to old habits. I am proud of how far I have come, but I know that recovery is a continuous journey. My experiences with addiction have taught me the importance of self-care and resilience. Moving forward, I am committed to maintaining a balanced, healthy lifestyle that supports my academic and professional goals while keeping my mental and emotional well-being at the forefront!
    Andre' Burchelle Roach Scholarship
My name is Coi, and I’m a senior at Epic Charter Schools in Oklahoma City, OK, ranking in the top 1% of my class (16th out of 2,846 students). I will be graduating with honors from the National Honors Society and earning an associate degree in Science from Oklahoma Christian University. After graduation, I plan to attend the University of Oklahoma, where I will pursue a degree in Pre-Dentistry with a minor in Business. My goal is to attend OU’s Health and Science Center and become a Dentist. This goal will then tie into my ultimate goal to start my own Dental Firm and provide more opportunities for minority groups (Native Americans, African Americans, Latino Americans, etc.) to get a good-paying job if they have the necessary qualifications. My passion for dentistry comes from personal experience. As a child, I tell you, no matter how many times I brushed and flossed, every time I found myself in the dentist's chair he would always diagnose me with at least 1 cavity. This year has been the first year in almost 2 years I went a year without a cavity (embarrassing, I know). It's these experiences that allow me to understand and sympathize with what my future clients may go through. I want them to know that they're not alone and others face these issues. My main goal is to provide them with not only excellent care but also emotional support when they need it. In my (little) free time, I love singing, dancing, and inserting myself in creative environments such as reading and writing. I am currently working on two books— Him = I, I = Her, and Addicted — which serve as a stress reliever and escape from the world when things get too overwhelming. Studying, and constantly learning are also core aspects of who I am, and when I’m not studying or writing, I enjoy spending my time tutoring and reading to children, both at my local library and online. Being able to witness my own spiritual and physical growth is great, but knowing that you're the cause' or help of someone else's growth is an altogether, unexplainable, beautiful experience. This scholarship would greatly contribute to furthering my studies. Just by looking at OU, even a blind man can see that school is not cheap! Coming from a semi-low-income household, financial assistance is important as it will help aid in covering some -- if not all -- of my tuition, room, board, and additional educational expenses at the University of Oklahoma. As someone who has worked hard to maintain academic excellence, I know that any financial support will allow me to focus more on my studies without the added pressure of financial unsureness. Additionally, receiving this scholarship would be physical proof that I'm seen and acknowledged for my dedication to my academic and extracurricular activities. It would also restore a sense of hope and motivation after weeks of applying for various scholarships. I believe I’m a strong candidate because I’m driven, polite, and deeply grateful for any opportunities that come my way. Should I receive this scholarship, you can expect a personal thank-you letter in the mail very soon after! In conclusion, this scholarship will not only help me financially but will also serve as a symbol of encouragement as I continue my journey toward becoming a dentist. Thank you for your time and consideration!
Ryan Stripling “Words Create Worlds” Scholarship for Young Writers
As a young child, reading was originally introduced to me as a punishment or a school assignment. Soon enough, however, what began as a chore became a passion that kindled a fire within me. Books opened new worlds, and before long, I found myself imagining my own stories. My love for writing began when I attempted to write my first book in elementary school. Inspired by R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series, I was excited to try something new and create something of my own. I remember rushing home, desperate to use my Papa’s computer before he got to it. However, I quickly realized that writing wasn’t as easy as it seemed. Being as young as I was, I had no idea where to start. I didn’t know what my characters were going to be like, where the plot would take place, or even how to structure a story. It should come as no surprise that I didn't make it past a paragraph or two before I felt stuck and defeated. Writing didn’t come as naturally as I thought it would. I remember staring at the screen, hoping that it would somehow grow arms and do the work for me. Discouraged, I gave up on writing for a while telling myself: "Maybe writing isn't for me." Years passed, and I had effectively convinced myself that writing wasn’t my thing. But the summer before I began high school, something changed. While reading A Love Hate Thing by Whitney D. Grandison, that distant, but familiar spark reignited. A part of me that had long given up whispered, “This time, it will be different" and "you have a better understanding of the structure and context of novels". I decided to take a chance. This time, without access to electronics, I wrote with pencil and paper. At first, my thoughts were foggy, discombobulated, and unclear; as I kept going, clarity and precision replaced the fog. Details flowed, characters developed, and a world began to take shape on my pages. Writing, which once felt like an impossible task, became a way for me to explore and express myself through my own unique characters. Living a distinct, intriguing life that may never be mine. Today, writing is my escape. It allows me to step away from the stresses of reality and insert myself into the worlds I create. Writing gives me the freedom to craft characters that reflect pieces of myself or the people around me. I can explore their emotions, struggles, and sucess in ways that sometimes feel easier than expressing my own. Through writing, I find comfort, creativity, and a sense of control over my surroundings. In college, I plan to continue nurturing my love for writing. I’m currently working on two novels: Him = I, I = Her, and Addicted. These projects allow me to experiment with character development, plot twists, and deeper themes like identity and relationships. I’m excited to continue expanding these stories and seeing where they take me. Additionally, I look forward to joining a creative writing class or workshop to sharpen my skills and connect with other writers who share my passion. Being in a college environment, surrounded by diverse perspectives and new ideas, will feed my creativity and help me grow as a writer. Writing, to me, is more than just putting words on paper. It’s a process of self-discovery, of the world, and of the people I create in my stories. In college, I’m determined to keep pushing myself as a writer, exploring new genres, refining my voice, and, most importantly, enjoying the journey of storytelling.
