Vietnamese Student of Excellence Scholarship
One always wishes of making their dreams become a reality. But how does a person begin to do so. As someone who is a first generation college student with immigrant parents, they have set the tone for me and have set me up for greatness so that my dreams could become a reality. They knew that coming here would not be easy that we would be financially unstable and not knowing what to expect. Over the course of the years, my family remained with low income, making it hard for us to survive in this growing economy. That did not stop them from sacrificing their time, money, and energy into me and my brother. We are the two oldest of the family on both mom and dad’s side meaning we must set the expectation to our younger relatives for success. As the oldest in my family, I have learned the ways of my beautiful Vietnamese culture and the importance of embracing it. As a minority group who comes from an area without fellow asian-americans to be friends with, I always felt as if I was so unique and that it was bad. At young ages, children learn to conform to those around them. I tried to but it was simply too difficult. I couldn’t relate to how everyone’s family eat dinner at different times, how they wore shoes in their homes, how their parents would tell them “I love you”, how they ate without chopsticks, and all the things that sets us apart. But I chose to agree with their experienced instead of expressing my own experiences. Embracing your uniqueness bring a sense of joy to the world, it allows others to put themselves into your shoes. Which exposes them to another way of life. This allows them to understand where you come from. It is important that we use our differences to become closer to one another instead of using our differences to set us apart.
Today, my biggest contribution to society is to empower the youth because it is important that even though they might be different from the majority, everyone has a uniqueness about themselves that separates them from the rest and that it’s okay. I want children to feel that their uniqueness is something that the world needs and that there are others who are also in their shoes so that they do not feel alone.
