Growing up, I always felt like I was carrying an invisible weight. At first, I didn’t understand what was wrong; I just knew that every day seemed harder than it should be. As a teenager, I realized that what I was feeling wasn’t something that would go away on its own. It was depression. Depression has affected me in many ways throughout my life. It’s made the simplest tasks feel overwhelming and has often made me feel disconnected from the world around me. I struggled with negative thoughts and a sense of hopelessness that often left me paralyzed. At my lowest points, I felt like there was no way out, and my mental health seemed like an insurmountable mountain that I could never climb. During those times, I tried to numb the pain. I briefly turned to unhealthy coping mechanisms, including drugs. I thought they might give me a temporary escape, but in the end, they only made things worse. I soon realized that drugs weren’t the answer. In fact, they only deepened the despair I felt and created even more hurdles to overcome. It wasn’t until I began seeking therapy and leaning on those who cared about me that I started to understand depression more clearly. I learned that it wasn’t something I could simply “get over,” but something that required consistent effort to manage. I found strength in small victories—taking a step forward each day, no matter how hard it seemed. Slowly but surely, I started rebuilding my life. I’ve faced many hurdles along the way. Mental health has affected my education, my relationships, and my sense of self. I’ve had moments where I thought I would never be able to pursue my passions because of the mental blocks I faced. But through therapy, support from family and friends, and finding healthy outlets like exercise and journaling, I’ve found my way forward. Each hurdle I’ve overcome has made me stronger and more determined to pursue a future that is not defined by my past struggles. Now, I’m at a point in my life where I’m ready to pursue my passions through education. I’ve learned to use my experiences with mental health to fuel my drive for success. I want to pursue a career in [insert your field or passion], because I believe that through education and personal growth, I can not only improve my own life but also help others who are facing similar struggles. I know the road won’t always be easy, but I’m prepared to keep moving forward. I’ve come to realize that pursuing an education is not just about getting a degree however it’s about proving to myself that I can achieve my goals, no matter the obstacles in my path. Mental health will always be a part of my story, but it no longer defines who I am or what I can accomplish. I’m ready to take the next step in my journey and embrace the challenges that lie ahead with the determination and resilience I’ve developed over the years.
Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
The quest to understand the nature of our universe is one of the most ambitious and crucial endeavors in human history. It is through this pursuit that we begin to grasp not just the laws of nature, but our place within it. By diving into the complexities of physics, mathematics, philosophy, and other related fields, we gain insight not only into the workings of the cosmos but into the very essence of existence itself. The question of “why” and “how” the universe operates is essential to the future of humanity and the continued advancement of knowledge. Understanding the universe doesn’t just hold academic value; it has the potential to address many of the existential challenges facing us, from climate change to the limits of human cognition and technology. The importance of studying the universe cannot be overstated, as it forms the foundation of innovation, progress, and even self-understanding. The questions we ask today are the keys to solving the problems of tomorrow. From Einstein’s theory of relativity to quantum mechanics, the breakthroughs in physics have already transformed how we live, work, and perceive the world. These ideas have given rise to technologies that power our daily lives, including the creation of computers, GPS systems, and even medical advancements. However, we are only beginning to scratch the surface of the mysteries that remain. As we continue to explore the universe, we move closer to discovering new phenomena, unlocking new technologies, and answering age-old questions about the origins of life, consciousness, and the cosmos itself. In addition to its practical applications, understanding the universe allows us to address larger existential questions: Who are we? What is our purpose? Are we alone in the universe? These questions have intrigued humanity for millennia, and yet many of them remain unanswered. The pursuit of knowledge, therefore, is not just about making discoveries but about shaping the very philosophy of human existence. The more we understand about the universe, the more we come to understand ourselves. As a student with a deep curiosity about the world and the universe, my focus will be on employing both scientific and philosophical ideas to uncover answers to these questions. I aim to study physics to better understand the fundamental forces and particles that govern our universe. From the mechanics of black holes to the behavior of quantum particles, I believe that the future of human understanding lies in comprehending the most basic building blocks of reality. The more we know about the laws of nature, the better we will be able to apply that knowledge to improve the world around us. At the same time, I hope to incorporate philosophical inquiry into my studies, as I believe that questions about existence, consciousness, and ethics are just as crucial as those about the physical universe. Understanding the nature of reality goes hand in hand with grappling with the human condition. How does our perception of the universe influence our behavior, decisions, and values? What is our responsibility to future generations in the face of our newfound knowledge? Philosophy can offer insights that bridge the gap between scientific discovery and moral responsibility. Moreover, I believe that we must employ interdisciplinary approaches to better understand the universe. Physics, biology, mathematics, and philosophy are all interconnected, and to truly understand the nature of the universe, we must work across these fields. My goal is to bring together the insights from each of these disciplines to approach questions from multiple angles and contribute to a more holistic understanding of reality. Through the Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship, I aim to further this journey and contribute to the scientific and philosophical exploration of our universe. The opportunity to pursue higher education will give me the tools and resources I need to build on the work of those who came before me, and to add my voice to the ongoing conversation about the nature of reality. I hope to make meaningful contributions to the world by deepening our understanding of the universe, and by encouraging others to join me in this pursuit of knowledge. Ultimately, the quest to understand the universe is not just an intellectual endeavor—it is a moral one. The more we learn, the better equipped we are to address the challenges facing humanity, from climate change to technological development to social justice. It is through this understanding that we will be able to create a better world, not just for ourselves but for future generations. By pushing the boundaries of human knowledge, we can pave the way for new discoveries that will shape the course of history and ensure a more enlightened, just, and sustainable future for all.
    Black Leaders Scholarship
Black History Month serves as an important reminder to reflect on the contributions, sacrifices, and leadership of Black individuals throughout history. One particularly is Malcolm X. He is a Black leader who has profoundly influenced my understanding of self-empowerment, social justice, and the importance of standing up for what is right. His journey, marked by personal transformation and unwavering commitment to the advancement of Black people, has inspired me to challenge societal norms, embrace my identity, and fight for equality. What I admire most about Malcolm X is his remarkable ability to transform himself from a man lost in a cycle of crime and disenfranchisement to a powerful voice for social change. His life story is one of resilience and redemption. Growing up in a segregated America, he faced many obstacles—racism, violence, and systemic oppression—but he used these experiences to fuel his passion for justice. His journey of self-education, especially his transformation while in prison, serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of self-reflection, growth, and the pursuit of knowledge. Through his dedication to learning, Malcolm X became an articulate advocate for Black empowerment and self-determination, showing me that personal growth can emerge from even the darkest of circumstances. Malcolm X’s leadership was built on a foundation of unapologetic truth-telling. He boldly spoke out against the inequalities faced by Black people and exposed the hypocrisy and racism embedded within American society. One of the things that stands out most about Malcolm X is his willingness to speak truth to power, no matter how controversial or uncomfortable his words might have been. He rejected the notion that Black people should be passive or complacent in the face of oppression. Instead, he advocated for self-defense and self-respect, empowering Black people to demand their rights and take control of their own destinies. His leadership taught me that true leadership is not about pleasing others, but about staying true to your principles and fighting for justice, even when it’s difficult. What also resonates with me is how Malcolm X’s views evolved throughout his life. His journey from advocating for separatism to embracing a more inclusive vision of racial unity after his pilgrimage to Mecca reflects his capacity for growth and his commitment to learning. This shift in his thinking highlights one of the most important qualities of a leader: the ability to adapt, grow, and challenge one’s own beliefs in the pursuit of a greater good. Malcolm X’s willingness to confront his own contradictions shows that leadership is not about being rigid or perfect, but about being open to change and growth. Malcolm X’s focus on Black pride and empowerment has had a lasting impact on how I view my own identity. He taught me the importance of embracing who I am without shame or fear. His message of Black self-love and the rejection of negative stereotypes has shaped how I approach my own sense of identity, reminding me that I should never let society’s judgments define my worth. Malcolm X’s legacy continues to motivate me to fight for justice and equality in my community. His leadership has instilled in me the importance of education, activism, and unapologetic self-expression. Like Malcolm X, I want to be a leader who challenges systems of oppression and empowers others to stand up for their rights. He has shown me that true leadership requires courage, perseverance, and a commitment to change. Malcolm X’s life and work are a reminder that each of us has the power to make a difference in the world by staying true to our values and using our voices to fight for justice.
    LeBron James Fan Scholarship
LeBron James is undeniably one of the greatest basketball players to ever step on the court, and I am proud to be a fan of his. His career is a testament to hard work, resilience, and dedication, not only to the game of basketball but also to the world around him. What stands out the most to me is not just his incredible on-court accomplishments but his impact off the court as well, shaping the next generation of athletes and using his platform for social change. LeBron’s journey from Akron, Ohio, to becoming an NBA legend is one that resonates with me because it embodies perseverance and overcoming adversity. Growing up in a single-parent household, LeBron faced immense challenges, but he channeled his struggles into motivation, working tirelessly to become a force on the basketball court. His rise to fame wasn’t just about his natural talent; it was about the mindset he developed along the way—the drive to be the best, the discipline to stay focused, and the leadership to inspire those around him. On the court, LeBron’s achievements speak for themselves. His ability to impact every aspect of the game, from scoring to playmaking to defense, is unmatched. As he continues to break records, including surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record, it’s clear that LeBron’s skill set and longevity have set him apart. His basketball IQ is unparalleled, and his versatility allows him to excel in almost every position. But what truly defines him as an icon is his ability to elevate his teammates and make everyone around him better, a quality that truly separates great players from legends. Beyond his basketball achievements, what truly makes LeBron an inspiration to me is his commitment to using his platform for positive change. His philanthropy work, including the founding of the “I PROMISE School” for at-risk children in Akron, is a powerful example of how athletes can leverage their success to make a difference in their communities. LeBron’s activism in social justice issues, such as speaking out against racial inequality and advocating for voting rights, shows that he understands the power of his influence and is dedicated to using it for good. Is LeBron the greatest basketball player of all time? While that debate is subjective and involves comparing players from different eras, I believe that LeBron’s career achievements, his ability to evolve with the game, and his impact both on and off the court make a compelling case. His consistency, leadership, and ability to perform at the highest level for over 20 years are unparalleled, and he continues to redefine what it means to be a basketball legend. As a fan, I admire LeBron not just for his athleticism, but for his resilience, his philanthropy, and his unwavering commitment to being a positive force in the world. He has shown that greatness is not just measured by championships or accolades, but by the impact you have on others and the legacy you leave behind.

    Social Anxiety Step Forward Scholarship
My struggle with social anxiety became especially clear during middle school. Simple things like raising my hand in class, introducing myself to new people, or participating in group projects felt paralyzing. My constant moments where I would be very quiet and observant in almost every public situation and even in private. I dreaded presentations and avoided social situations whenever possible, which often left me feeling isolated. As I moved into high school, the anxiety didn’t magically disappear. It followed me into new classrooms, larger crowds, and more expectations, and I quickly realized I couldn’t ignore it anymore. It wasn’t until high school that I began to truly understand and confront my anxiety. After opening up to a teacher about my struggles, I was encouraged to seek professional help. I was diagnosed with social anxiety, and while it was difficult to face, having a name for what I had been experiencing brought clarity and relief. Therapy and support from my family became a lifeline, helping me develop tools like cognitive-behavioral techniques and small, actionable steps to challenge my fears. High school became a testing ground for overcoming my anxiety. I worked on speaking up in class, joining extracurricular activities, and building relationships with peers and teachers. While I’m still on this journey, I’ve learned that progress doesn’t come all at once, it happens in small, courageous steps. Pursuing a college education is the next big step for me. James T. Godwin Memorial Scholarship
My father served in the United States Navy, and while his military career was filled with discipline, resilience, and duty, it’s the little stories from his time in service that have left the biggest impression on me. One of my favorite stories he shared took place during his deployment on an aircraft carrier, a floating city in the middle of the ocean. It wasn’t about the missions or the operations, but rather about a sense of community and adaptability in the face of challenges. One evening, during a rare moment of downtime, the ship’s power unexpectedly went out. Imagine being in the middle of the vast ocean with no lights, surrounded by complete darkness. My father described how eerie and silent it was—just the sound of the waves against the hull and the hum of people trying to figure out what had happened. What started as a potential moment of panic quickly turned into an unforgettable experience of camaraderie. The crew, including my father, decided to make the most of the situation. Someone found a flashlight, then another person joined in with a battery-powered speaker, and before long, they had an impromptu gathering on the flight deck under the stars. My father always laughed as he described the makeshift karaoke contest that unfolded—sailors singing off-key renditions of classic rock songs while others danced and cheered. For a few hours, they forgot about the stresses of deployment and just enjoyed each other’s company. This story taught me so much about who my father is and about life in general. First, it demonstrated his ability to find light in dark situations, both literally and figuratively. Despite the challenges of military service—being far from family, working in high-stress environments, and constantly adapting, he found ways to bond with those around him and make the best out of any situation. It also showed me the importance of teamwork and connection. In moments of uncertainty, my father and his crew relied on each other, proving that even in the most challenging environments, unity can turn adversity into something meaningful. Finally, this story highlighted the resilience and adaptability that my father has passed down to me. Whether I’m facing academic challenges in my civil engineering studies or personal obstacles in life, I think back to that story. It reminds me to stay calm, find the good in every situation, and work with others to overcome difficulties. Though my father’s service in the Navy came with many sacrifices, it’s these stories that illustrate the sense of humanity and togetherness that comes from serving with others. It’s a lesson I carry with me every day and one I hope to honor in my own life. Just like my father found joy and connection on that dark night in the middle of the ocean, I strive to find light in every challenge I face, knowing I have his example to guide me.
    Charles B. Brazelton Memorial Scholarship
As a child, I dreamed of becoming an architect. I was fascinated by buildings, structures, and how they seemed to hold endless possibilities for creativity and functionality. I would spend hours sketching imaginary blueprints of homes, parks, and skyscrapers, imagining the lives people would live within those spaces. My passion for creating spaces that served a major purpose whether it is offering shelter, fostering community, or simply inspiring awe—felt like my calling. While my childhood dream has evolved slightly, I am still on a similar path, pursuing civil engineering as my career. Though architecture and civil engineering differ in their focus, they share the same goal of creating functional, lasting spaces that shape our world. I realized as I grew older that my interests extended beyond design; I became intrigued by the science and mathematics behind how things work. The opportunity to merge creativity with practicality in civil engineering excited me. I wanted to not only envision buildings and infrastructure but also ensure they were structurally sound, sustainable, and accessible to all. This career shift also grew from a deeper understanding of the role infrastructure plays in addressing societal issues. Mental health is a cornerstone of human experience, affecting our goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. My journey with mental health has been a profound and intricate part of my life, shaping who I am today. Through the challenges and triumphs, I have gained a deeper appreciation for resilience, empathy, and the importance of holistic well-being. My experience with mental health has significantly influenced my goals, both personal and professional. In my early years, I struggled with anxiety and depression, which often felt like insurmountable barriers. These struggles forced me to reevaluate what success meant to me. Instead of chasing conventional markers of achievement, I began to prioritize goals that aligned with my mental well-being. For instance, I chose a career path that allowed for a healthy work-life balance, opting for flexibility and a supportive environment over high-stress, high-reward positions. This decision was driven by my understanding that mental health is paramount; no professional success is worth compromising it. Moreover, my experiences have inspired me to pursue goals that advocate for mental health awareness and support. I aim to contribute to creating environments, both in workplaces and communities, where mental health is openly discussed and prioritized. Mental health challenges have also deeply impacted my relationships. Initially, dealing with these issues led to feelings of isolation and misunderstanding. However, as I began to seek help and open up about my struggles, I found that vulnerability could be a bridge to deeper connections. My relationships are now built on a foundation of empathy and mutual support. Understanding my own mental health has made me more attuned to the needs of others. I have learned to recognize signs of distress in my friends and family and offer support in meaningful ways. This has not only strengthened existing bonds but also attracted relationships with individuals who value and understand the importance of mental health. Furthermore, I have become an advocate for open conversations about mental health within my social circles. By sharing my experiences, I hope to reduce the stigma and encourage others to seek help when needed. This openness has fostered a community of trust and compassion, where people feel safe to express their struggles without fear of judgment. Experiencing mental health issues has profoundly shaped my worldview. It has taught me that the human experience is incredibly diverse, and that empathy and kindness are essential. I have learned that everyone is fighting their own battles, often invisible to the outside world, and that a little understanding can go a long way. This perspective has driven me to be more compassionate and patient in my interactions. I approach conflicts with a mindset of understanding rather than judgment, recognizing that behavioral issues often stem from deeper, unaddressed mental health problems. This empathetic approach extends to my view of societal issues as well. I advocate for mental health policies and support systems that address the root causes of problems, rather than just their symptoms. My understanding of the world now includes a recognition of the systemic issues that contribute to mental health struggles. I am passionate about advocating for changes that address these root causes, such as improved access to mental health care, education on mental health from a young age, and policies that reduce socioeconomic stressors. In conclusion, my experience with mental health has been a transformative journey that has shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. It has taught me the value of resilience, the importance of empathy, and the necessity of prioritizing mental well-being. These lessons have guided me towards a life that values personal and collective mental health, fostering deeper connections and a more compassionate worldview. As I continue on this journey, I am committed to advocating for mental health awareness and support, ensuring that others can find the understanding and help they need.

As a young Black man, I am continuously navigating through manifold pressures of academia, societal demands, and inherent racial struggles. In this roller-coaster of experiences, I have learned that my mental health isn't just important - it's essential. Like the resilient structures I aspire to engineer, the mind must be nurtured, cared for, and maintained to withstand challenges and preserve its purpose. My understanding of the importance of mental health is rooted in recognizing its role as the foundation of personal growth and success. I am aware that my ability to perform well academically, persevere through arduous tasks, and actively engage in social situations largely depends on my mental health status. Moreover, my well-being helps me maintain optimistic energy in adversity, a tool crucial for any black man navigating American society. I relate mental health to civil engineering principles - strength and stability go together. My commitment to mental health has helped me keep my GPA at 3.4 during high school, an accomplishment I'm proud of. Without a mind at peace, I wouldn't be able to concentrate on complicated calculus problems or persist in multi-step physics exercises, hallmarks of my chosen major. Mental health is not just a personal matter; it's intertwined with my academic life and future career. Maintaining mental wellness, however, isn't a one-size-fits-all journey. It is an individualized process that requires self-awareness. Reflecting upon this, I have found ways to manage myself to maintain a healthy mental space. Exercise has been one of my top strategies. It not only keeps me fit but also serves as a natural outlet for stress, helping me to clear my mind and providing a much-needed break from the endless assignments and studying. Furthermore, open discussions about feelings and thoughts with close ones have created a space for the ventilation of frustrations and anxiety, significantly reducing their impact. I can't stress enough how vital creating a support system has proven to be for my mental well-being. Lastly, as trite as it may sound, a well-balanced diet and good sleep have tremendously supported my mental health. Together these essential health practices ensure I am physically equipped to cope with any stresses I encounter. In a world filled with numerous technological developments and scientific breakthroughs, it's apparent that the foundation of it all is a well-functioning human mind. However, the mind can only perform its best when tended to and cared for, demonstrating the undeniable importance of mental health. The strategies I employ to maintain personal mental health - from physical exercise to a balanced diet and open communication - provide me with a robust and flexible psychological structure, capable of accommodating the varied pressures and strains I will face both in academia and life. In conclusion, mental health is not just paramount to personal growth, but it lays the foundation for industry, innovation, and global advancement. As I navigate my engineering experience, I will continue focusing on mental wellness, an important cornerstone of my success.

I've often had to deal with problems that seem impossible growing up. However, a particular experience stands out as proof of my determination to overcome the obstacles. When I was in the midst of my last year of middle school, my family received news that would shake the very foundation of our lives: we had to move states. My father, the sole breadwinner of our family, had been offered a job opportunity in a different state that promised better prospects for our future. While the prospect of a brighter future was enticing, the thought of leaving behind everything familiar was daunting. The move was not just a geographical transition; it was a test of resilience for my family and me. We faced numerous challenges, from finding a new home and adjusting to a different culture to establishing new social connections. Even though the move was only one state away from Virginia, I still have the determination to overcome this struggle, especially during the start of the coronavirus pandemic at the time. Despite the initial struggles, I approached the move with a determined mindset. I recognized that adversity was an inevitable part of life and that success often requires stepping out of one's comfort zone. I embraced the opportunity to adapt to change, viewing it as a chance to grow personally and academically. This experience profoundly shaped my character and influenced my pursuit of a career in engineering and my decision to attend an HBCU. The resilience I developed during the move instilled in me a tenacity to overcome obstacles and persevere in the face of adversity. It taught me the importance of adaptability, problem-solving, and resilience qualities that are essential for success in engineering. Moreover, the move reinforced my appreciation for diversity and the strength that comes from embracing different perspectives. As I researched potential colleges, I was drawn to the vibrant and inclusive community offered by HBCUs like North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. I saw attending an HBCU as an opportunity to connect with peers who shared similar backgrounds and experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and support. In summary, the challenge of moving states instilled in me a resilience that has shaped my character and influenced my academic and career aspirations. It taught me the importance of embracing change, overcoming adversity, and seeking out environments that foster diversity and inclusion values that align perfectly with my aspirations as an engineer and my decision to attend an HBCU.

A lot of people in my life have affected me, but the biggest impact has been on my parents. My parents have made a lot of sacrifices so I can live better. They're my strongest allies and encourage me to strive for excellence. When I was growing up, they taught me morals and values that I hold dear today, including respect for others. My parents and I share a lot of traits, and their perspective is mine. I'm expecting a lot from myself because both of my parents are excellent scholars and they know what their children can do. If I try to influence a group of people, then I'll find myself in this situation. The values of perseverance and optimism have been instilled in me by them. They've made me what I am today. I've learned a lot of their passions from having such a great role model as a child. They are hard workers, have a positive attitude, and were such a strong role model for me growing up that I not only learned to love the excitement of learning something new for its own sake, but I also understood the concept of giving back to the community in exchange for a new lease on life, love, and spirit. I was shaped by my mother's tendency to be very organized, but constantly anxious. I was always taught the value of happiness and the joy that comes from earning things. They encouraged me to think thoughtfully and make God's decisions, which is a daily challenge. Finally, instead of comparing what I offer to others to what God gives us, I learned to appreciate what he gives us. Every day, through her actions, her words or her choices, whether they were good or bad, she set an example. I was instilled with a sense of humor by my father, encouraging me to try new things. He's given me access to a wider range of social experiences and a wider range of coping mechanisms for life. In the field, he often stressed the importance of duty, justice, fairness, and regulations. He educates me about the repercussions of right and wrong and their objectivity in this way. He’s shown me the value of respect towards everyone, helping me prepare for life's challenges. When I was growing up, my parents taught me all of these things, and as a result, I've developed better relationships with coworkers and other people. Communication and discipline skills with others were also heavily influenced by my parents. To prioritize their happiness, they sacrificed so much. I was given morals and strength in both psychology and emotions by my parents' influence. I couldn't have realized my full potential without it. Even if I'm terrible at something, they're never going to ruin my ambition if I'm passionate about it. Instead, they're always encouraging me to try again. My parents' mutual wish to help others has enhanced my life. I've seen a truly remarkable life and hope thanks to their example. I'm a strong, driven man who gets along well with others, and I'm looking forward to helping those in need. They're having an effect on how I live. I think my parents have been the biggest influence on me as I've grown up. They've given me their qualities and made me a dynamic, driven individual.
