Hello! My name is Cayla Smith and I am very grateful to have you viewing my profile. I am a former Fashion Design student at Drexel University. Due to drastic financial changes I was unable to keep attending for my sophomore year. However, I refuse to let a change in location keep me from pursing my education! I currently attend UNC: Greensboro to continue getting my BA in Fashion Design and Retail Studies.
My faith in God is extremely important to me and I hope to use my degree to launch my own Christian based clothing brand. I believe God has given me a gift in fashion design and has put it in my heart to use my gift to spread His love (Deuteronomy 28:12). Additionally, I would like my passion to fly me to California or New York so that I can become costume designer for film and television.
Big dreams aside, attaining the money for school has been a challenge that I refuse to back down from. I feel that every little bit counts. From $500- $50,000; I see it as a blessing that takes me one step closer to being a blessing to someone else.
Thank you for reading and I hope you have a blessed day!

For many people, faith plays a significant role in providing guidance, support, and a sense of purpose in their lives. It can provide comfort during difficult times, offer a moral framework for decision-making, and foster a sense of community and belonging. Individuals often find solace in their relationship with God or a higher power, drawing strength from their beliefs and seeking guidance through prayer or spiritual practices.
Ever since I was a young girl, faith has been an integral part of my life. I come from a household that prioritizes one's faith and personal relationship with God. I grew up trusting God to guide me and bring me guidance at all times. As I have gotten older and my adversities have shifted from petty playground squabbles to more mature issues, I depend on HIm more than ever.
Being a plus-size black girl, I faced numerous challenges and moments of self-doubt. Bullying and harsh comments about my body, skin, and demeanor have made me question why God has brought me here and what am I truly for. It was during these times that my faith in God became a source of strength. From weight-related bullying to racial discrimination, God has pulled me through. He provides me with a strong foundation of self-worth and confidence. Regardless of what society tries to force into me, I am reminded that God has made me perfectly in his image. My faith empowers me to embrace my own identity, celebrate my heritage and challenge conventional norms.
There is a huge lack of representation regarding race and body type within the fashion industry. I know the feeling of neglect that attacks your body when you go into a clothing store to be met with sizes that don’t go past a large. Or how belittling it can be to watch a runway show and realize that none of the models look like you. God has made me who I am so that I can help fill that void in the fashion industry and to make sure that people with bodies of every version can feel luxuriously beautiful. I want to install that same sense of divine perfection in others that God has instilled in me.
As I pursued my passion for fashion design, my faith has become a guiding force in my career. I am so grateful that God has not only blessed me with gifts of creativity and the ability to sew but also the drive and ambition to put those talents to good use. I have made garments for myself and others that have opened doors of opportunity for exposure and notoriety within the fashion world. When I create, whether that be sketching a dress or hand-sewing beads and sequins I experience an otherworldly feeling that can only be interpreted as God letting me know that this is my calling. I know that through Him, all things are possible because He strengthens me.
My faith and relationship with God provides me with a sense of purpose, strength, and inspiration in my life and career. In the field of fashion design, my faith guides me to create inclusive and empowering designs, while also helping me navigate the challenges that come with being a plus-size woman of color. By His hand, I embrace my identity while working toward playing a significant role in reshaping the fashion industry, promoting diversity, and fostering positive change.
Curtis Holloway Memorial Scholarship
I’ve always been told I have my mother’s face. She’s a beautiful woman so the comment is nothing less than a compliment. Yet, to have her brains, resilience, compassion and ability to overcome all odds is something I will do anything to inherit. Throughout my educational journey, my mother, a single parent, has been the primary source of support and guidance, playing an instrumental role in helping me reach my educational goals.
As a child I received a first hand viewing of a woman dedicated to bettering the life of herself and her two young children through higher education. During the time of my parents divorce mom continued to work a full time job while achieving her master’s degree. Yet, through the long work hours, suffocating assignments, and emotional angst my mother never failed to give us her all as a parent.
She has actively listened to my concerns, challenges, and triumphs, offering valuable advice and encouragement. Her voice, filled with warmth and wisdom, has been a constant source of motivation, assuring me that I can overcome any obstacle. Whether through words of affirmation, cheering me on during exams, or engaging in meaningful discussions about my aspirations, her supportive presence has resonated deeply and spurred me on towards my educational goals.
From sketchbooks taking up too much room on my bookshelf to embroidering flowers onto my socks, art has often been my first form of self expression. My mother paid close attention to these habits and provided me with as much as possible to support my interest. She brought me sewing and drawing books and never hesitated to seek out people who could help pour into me. Additionally, she moved my brother and I from Maryland to Raleigh, NC so that we would have better educational opportunities in the areas we wanted to pursue. This also extends to her stumbling upon Longleaf School of the Arts, a highschool dedicated to education through the arts and also the school where I graduated from.
When I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in fashion design she created our own version of Project Runway right from home. Every week during the summer of 2019 she would assign me an article of clothing. During the week I was required to research, design, and create a garment which not only encouraged my creativity but enhanced my sewing skills, all while testing my discipline and passion for fashion. In her own way, my mother prepared me for what I would later go to college for. I will forever admire her determination to teach me how to be taught.
My mother has made tremendous sacrifices to support my educational goals. As the sole breadwinner, she has worked tirelessly to provide for our family and ensure that I have the necessary resources to succeed academically. There have been times where she stretched a paycheck for a month so that I could afford the materials needed for class. Her willingness to provide the best possible opportunities for my education has been both inspiring and humbling.
My mother has also been the embodiment of resilience, determination, and love. She loves me enough to give me the glasses off her face so that I can read and expand my mind. My mom has faced numerous challenges, both personal and financial, but has never allowed them to hinder my educational aspirations. Instead, she hoists me on her shoulders so that I can reach the stars and I couldn’t be more blessed.
Disney Super Fan Scholarship
As a young black girl watching "The Princess and the Frog" for the first time, it was a deeply impactful experience. Finally, there was a Disney princess who looked like me, with brown skin and textured hair. I had someone other than Jasmine or Pocahontas to dress up as for halloween. There was someone with a soulful voice like mine who’s song I could belt to the heavens. Tiana is a breath of fresh air who’s film stands as a representation of black culture and identity that I had rarely seen in mainstream media.
The film transported me to the enchanting world of New Orleans, where Tiana, a strong and determined protagonist, pursued her dreams. Seeing her resilience and hard work reminded me that I too could achieve anything I set my mind to, despite the obstacles I might face.
Moreover, the movie celebrated black heritage and showcased vibrant aspects of African American culture, from the jazzy music to the mouthwatering cuisine. It taught me to embrace my roots and be proud of my heritage.
"The Princess and the Frog" shattered stereotypes by depicting diverse black characters with depth and complexity. It was refreshing to witness Tiana as an intelligent and independent young woman, challenging the notion that black characters had to conform to certain limited roles. It instilled in me a sense of representation, resilience, and cultural pride, leaving an indelible mark on my journey of self-discovery and affirmation.
Princess Tiana has been a tremendous source of inspiration for me in pursuing a career in fashion design. Tiana's unwavering passion for her dream of opening her own restaurant resonated deeply with me. Her determination and work ethic taught me the importance of staying committed to my own aspirations, no matter the obstacles that come my way.
Tiana's journey from being a waitress to becoming a successful business owner reminded me that hard work and perseverance are essential in achieving my goals. Her character showed me that success is not handed to us but earned through dedication and a relentless pursuit of our dreams. Tiana's story challenged the limited narratives often associated with black characters and showcased the limitless possibilities for black individuals to pursue their passions.
Furthermore, Tiana's attention to detail and her ability to transform her surroundings with her creativity spoke to me as a budding fashion designer. Her keen eye for aesthetics and her determination to create something extraordinary reflected the very essence of the fashion world. Tiana reminded me that even in the face of adversity, my creativity can be a powerful tool to shape my reality and make a lasting impact.
Princess Tiana's representation as a black woman in a profession where diversity is still lacking served as a constant reminder that my dreams are valid and achievable. I am often one of few, if not the only black person in the design studio or drawing class. Her character gives me the courage to embrace my cultural heritage and incorporate it into my designs, celebrating diversity and fostering inclusivity within the fashion industry.
Princess Tiana has encouraged me to stay passionate about fashion design, teaching me to believe in myself, work tirelessly towards my goals, and use my creativity as a catalyst for positive change. Her character continues to inspire me to break barriers, defy expectations, and create a space for myself in the world of fashion. When I face a challenge I am reminded to keep going because I'm almost there and one thing Tiana never did was give up.
Hearts on Sleeves, Minds in College Scholarship
Veganism, to me, represents a lifestyle and belief system that extends compassion and respect to all living beings. It goes beyond dietary choices and encompasses a commitment to avoid using animal-derived products in all aspects of life. As a fashion designer, veganism holds immense significance and will undoubtedly shape my future in the industry.
Firstly, embracing veganism aligns with my values of sustainability and ethical responsibility. The traditional fashion industry heavily relies on animal-derived materials such as leather, fur, and silk, which contribute to animal cruelty and environmental degradation. By adopting a vegan approach to fashion design, I can actively contribute to reducing harm to animals and minimizing the negative impact on the planet. It allows me to explore innovative alternatives and cruelty-free materials that are both sustainable and compassionate.
Choosing vegan materials in fashion design opens up a world of possibilities. In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in the development of high-quality vegan fabrics that mimic the luxurious textures and aesthetic appeal of animal-based materials. Innovations such as plant-based leather substitutes, recycled fibers, and organic textiles offer a wide range of options for creating beautiful and sustainable garments. By utilizing these alternatives, I can demonstrate that fashion can be both stylish and ethical, debunking the misconception that animal products are necessary for high-end designs.
Moreover, veganism in fashion design promotes inclusivity and appeals to a growing segment of conscious consumers. The rise of veganism as a lifestyle choice has sparked an increasing demand for cruelty-free and sustainable fashion. By catering to this market, I can attract a wider customer base that values ethics and environmental responsibility. In a world where consumers are becoming more aware of the impact of their choices, offering vegan fashion allows me to connect with individuals who seek to align their values with their purchasing decisions.
In terms of creativity, veganism challenges me as a designer to think outside the box and push the boundaries of traditional materials. It encourages me to experiment with unconventional fabrics, textures, and techniques, fostering innovation and unique design concepts. By embracing veganism, I can infuse my creations with a distinct aesthetic that reflects my commitment to sustainability and compassion. This can set me apart in a saturated industry and position me as a pioneer of cruelty-free fashion.
Furthermore, adopting a vegan approach in fashion design extends beyond materials. It encompasses the entire supply chain, from production to distribution. It requires transparency and accountability in ensuring fair labor practices, as well as environmentally friendly manufacturing processes. By striving for a holistic vegan approach, I can contribute to a fashion industry that values social and environmental responsibility.
In conclusion, veganism holds great meaning for me as a fashion designer. It represents a commitment to compassion, sustainability, and ethical responsibility. By embracing vegan materials and practices, I can contribute to reducing animal cruelty and environmental harm within the industry. Veganism allows me to tap into a growing market of conscious consumers and promote inclusivity and innovation in design. It challenges me to think creatively and explore alternatives that are both stylish and sustainable. Ultimately, by incorporating veganism into my fashion design philosophy, I can shape a future where fashion is not only beautiful but also kind to animals and the planet we share.

As a fashion designer, my vision goes far beyond creating beautiful garments. I am determined to make a positive impact on the world through my designs, using fashion as a tool for change. With a deep understanding of the environmental and social issues plaguing our planet, I intend to revolutionize the industry by embracing sustainability, inclusivity, and conscious consumption.
First and foremost, sustainability will be at the core of my design philosophy. I plan to meticulously source eco-friendly and ethically produced materials, minimizing the environmental footprint of my creations. I will explore innovative textile technologies and implement practices like upcycling and recycling to reduce waste. By promoting slow fashion and durability, I aim to counter the throwaway culture that dominates the industry, encouraging consumers to cherish and value their clothing for years to come.
I firmly believe that fashion should celebrate diversity and empower individuals of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. As a plus size woman the fashion industry has rarely made room for me. I, however, am determined to change that. Through my collections, I will strive to challenge traditional beauty standards and embrace a range of body types, ethnicities, and gender identities. By featuring models from diverse backgrounds in my runway shows and campaigns, I hope to inspire a more inclusive and accepting fashion industry.
Fashion has the power to spark conversations and provoke change. Through collaborations with nonprofit organizations, I will design special collections that shed light on critical issues such as race equality, human rights, and environmental conservation. By partnering with like-minded individuals and donating a portion of proceeds to relevant causes, I aim to make a tangible impact beyond the realm of fashion.
Additionally, I am passionate about education and empowering the next generation of designers. I intend to establish scholarship programs and mentorship initiatives to provide aspiring designers from disadvantaged backgrounds with the necessary resources and guidance. By nurturing talent and fostering creativity, I hope to create a more diverse and inclusive fashion industry that values merit over privilege.
My plan to make a positive impact on the world through fashion design is rooted in sustainability, inclusivity, and advocacy. By redefining industry standards, promoting conscious consumption, and embracing diversity, I strive to contribute to a more equitable and environmentally conscious society. I am excited to utilize the power of fashion to inspire change and leave a lasting legacy of innovation and compassion.

Bold Art Matters Scholarship
Warmth and saturation. Smiles and laughter. All of it fills my senses and wraps me in the sweetest of embraces. The warm hues of purple, pink, and orange ask “how’ve you been?”. The soft forms of the people offer to grab me a second plate. Barbeque by Archibald J. Motley Jr. is my favorite piece of art because it develops the universal concepts of togetherness. This arrangement of oil painted strokes display a beautiful scene of people enjoying themselves on a summer’s night. I admire the timelessness of Motley’s work. Although the work was made in the 1930s, its atmosphere is everlasting. I could look at this painting 20 years from now and I will still be able to smell the aroma of charcoal flames and hear the joyful chatter of people just spending time together. Barbeque by Archibald J. Motley Jr. not only makes me want to eat a hotdog off the grill, but also encourages me to enjoy those around me because unlike this wonderful work of art, nothing lasts forever so we must enjoy life while we can.
Terry Crews "Creative Courage" Scholarship
As a plus-size girl, it is not often that my body type is equated to beauty or elegance. When I think of my future impact on the fashion industry my main goal is to prove that anybody can be luxurious. I also feel that the only way I can push this concept, I would need to start with myself.
At the thought of luxury, the first garment that comes to mind is a fur coat. From European royalty to 1950s Hollywood stars, all the bougie people owned fur. So in November 2020, I decided it was my time to join them.
Creating my coat was an experience filled with joy, stress, and pink dye-stained surfaces. After choosing a faux fur to use, drafting the pattern, and cutting the fabric, it was time to dye. It was a Saturday night in November, my mother was out of town, and I was in the kitchen looming over a pot of boiling water. Sweat was beading on my forehead as the steam fogged up my glasses. Once the pot had reached the right temperature I put the fabric in, feeling good about how things were going. That feeling was short-lived as the pot started bubbling over onto the surface of my mother’s white stovetop, counters, and down to the floor.
When I had scrubbed the counters like my life depended on it (because it did!), and let the fabric dry, I put my masterpiece together. When I put that coat on it makes me feel just like royalty or a 1950s star and that is exactly how I want others to feel when they wear my garments. That coat brings me joy because it displays who I am and what I can do for this world.
Ruth and Johnnie McCoy Memorial Scholarship
Goals are like helium-filled balloons inflated by one's dreams and expectations. For some, they've tied that hanging ribbon around their wrist, to keep their balloon from drifting away. For many, that balloon has floated just beyond the grasp of their fingertips. It may seem hopeless, for that balloon seems long gone as the wind carries it away on her shoulders. But with the help of a ladder that's just tall enough, that balloon could be obtained once again, to be tied up on your wrist.
In my case, my goals contain fashion design as their helium. I have always had a passion for fashion. As a kid, I spent my days making dresses for my dolls, sketching outfits, and watching every fashion-based barbie movie I could get my hands on. As time has gone on, fashion design has wrapped around my life like a vine. I received a sewing machine for my 12th birthday and it has been a treasure of mine ever since. I like to make expanding my knowledge of the fashion industry a top priority by investing in books regarding sewing, fashion business, fabric, and patternmaking. However, all of this has been the equivalent of standing on my tiptoes.
As I have gotten older, it has become blatantly obvious that fashion is not made for fat people. The fashion industry does not put the same time and energy into making plus-size bodies seem beautiful and luxurious as it does smaller ones. So, as a plus-size, fashion-loving girl, I feel that it is my duty to add myself to the equation. I dream of someday soon starting a fashion company that possesses an extensive size range in order to display that all bodies are elegant.
To me, learning is a fundamental piece in success. I love to learn and I see being educated as not just a want but a necessity for my life. Every fact and experience stands as the rainwater for the growing plant that is my mind. There is only so much I can learn on my own. However, exposing myself to an environment filled with those more experienced than I would be extremely beneficial.
Going to college would open doors to connections and learning experiences that would set me on the right track to achieving my goal of starting an inclusive fashion company. Higher education would also help me gain a deeper understanding of the fashion industry from both an artistic and business standpoint. Receiving my education and obtaining a degree in fashion design would be the ladder that would boost me high enough to clutch that balloon.
