Bio

I am truly fortunate to have discovered my passion as a high schooler, as I realize that many adults do not know their passion or how they want to make their mark on the world. I joined FFA as a freshman because I wanted to raise an animal (I thought it would be my pet), but this decision fostered my love for animal science and veterinary medicine. Living in a suburb of Houston, I would not have been exposed to this career path without FFA. I know that many kids want to be veterinarians “when they grow up,” but I am going to be a large animal/livestock veterinarian. FFA provided me the opportunity to raise three commercial heifers and see the importance of agriculture education. I am taking this passion on the road next year when I study agriculture. I cannot wait to continue learning in college and beyond. This summer I am headed to Texas A and M as a freshman to study Poultry Science Pre-Vet Track. My journey to become a veterinarian is fueled by a genuine love for animals, a desire to make a positive impact on their lives, and a commitment to addressing the broader challenges they face. I am confident in my ability to make meaningful contributions to the field of veterinary medicine, fostering a world where animals receive the care and compassion they deserve.

    Inguz Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, I demonstrated a deep empathy for animals, going beyond mere companionship to a genuine commitment to their well-being. Witnessing the unconditional love and loyalty they provided, I recognized the responsibility we have as humans to reciprocate that care. This realization ignited my passion for veterinary science, as I sought to bridge the gap between humanity and the animal kingdom, advocating for their health and welfare. Its hard to choose a “favorite” animal as they I love them all. One of my favorite animals is the humble cow. Cows are remarkable creatures with intelligence, curiosity, and social bonds. By raising three heifers, I have discovered that cows have high emotional intelligence and empathy. Cows have also helped me realize my passion. One of my heifers required medical treatment and the closest livestock veterinarian was almost 150 miles away! He was also in the process of retiring. I understood that there is a shortage of livestock vets, and they are critical to manage the health and welfare of livestock and our food supply. Over the past four years of high school, I have studied animal science and have become increasingly drawn to this career. Becoming a livestock veterinarian offers a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on both animals and the communities relying on them. Livestock veterinarians are instrumental in disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, contributing to the overall health and productivity of livestock. In a world facing challenges such as food security and emerging diseases, the role of veterinarians becomes increasingly crucial. This decision is not merely a profession, but a calling rooted in a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between animal health, human welfare, and sustainable agriculture. Beyond my personal experiences, I am committed to addressing the broader challenges facing animals today. The increasing prevalence of diseases, the impact of climate change on habitats, and the ethical treatment of animals in various industries motivate me to contribute my skills to the veterinary field. I am eager to engage in research, outreach, and advocacy to promote sustainable practices and elevate the standard of care for animals globally. Academically, my passion for Agriculture has been a guiding force, propelling me to excel in courses such as Biology and Animal Science. In addition to raising 3 heifers for FFA, I was on the FFA Quiz Team and Livestock Judging Team for all four years. Beyond the classroom, my involvement in FFA and as a two time varsity cheerleading captain has instilled in me a sense of responsibility and empathy, shaping me into a well-rounded individual committed to making a difference. I wear a lot of hats at school and my community: Varsity Cheer Captain, FFA Secretary, National Honor Society member, Junior Livestock Committee volunteer for the county fair, Fair Queen Candidate, gymnastics coach, daughter, sister, and friend. My unique blend of academic fervor, community engagement, and personal experiences positions me as a candidate who not only seeks knowledge but also strives to apply it meaningfully. With this scholarship, I am confident that I can continue to pursue my goals and make a lasting impact on the world around me.

My older sister was not just a sibling to me; she was my guiding light, my confidante, and my unwavering support system. Her presence shaped my understanding of resilience, determination, and compassion. My sister was my go-to person for advice, comfort, and laughter. Her unconditional love and encouragement created a profound impact on my personal growth and aspirations. My beautiful sister died on January 17, 2023. The sudden and unexpected loss of my sister was devastating blow that shook the very foundations of my world. Coping with such an unimaginable loss required resilience, introspection, and a commitment to personal growth. In the aftermath of this tragedy, I learned several strategies to navigate the complexities of grief and ultimately found ways to channel the pain into avenues of personal development. I have never been good at sharing my emotions with others, because I equated vulnerability with weakness. I quickly recognized the importance of seeking support from friends, family, and professionals. Sharing my emotions with others provided a cathartic outlet and helped me realize that I was not alone in my struggles. This support network became a crucial anchor during the darkest moments, offering understanding and empathy that eased the burden of grief. To cope with the overwhelming emotions, I turned to introspection and self-reflection. Journaling became a therapeutic tool, allowing me to process my thoughts and emotions in a structured manner. This practice not only helped me make sense of the complex feelings surrounding my sister's passing but also served as a record of my evolving journey through grief. Additionally, I embraced the power of resilience and sought out constructive ways to honor my sister's memory. Engaging in activities she loved and dedicating time to charitable endeavors in her name provided a sense of purpose and allowed me to transform the pain into positive actions. This commitment to turning tragedy into a catalyst for positive change played an important role in my personal development. Through my healing journey , I discovered an inner strength and resilience I never knew I possessed. The profound loss of my sister forced me to confront the fragility of life and prompted a reevaluation of my priorities. It ignited a profound sense of empathy and compassion within me, fostering a greater appreciation for the fleeting nature of time and relationships. The sudden death of my sister was a crucible that tested my emotional strength and resilience. While the pain of loss is enduring, the strategies I employed – seeking support, introspection, and transforming grief into positive action – have been instrumental in my personal development. This journey, though painful, has shaped me into a more empathetic, resilient, and compassionate individual. As I embark on my academic journey, I carry with me the invaluable lessons she imparted and the strength derived from her unwavering support, making her an integral part of the person I am today.

Janean D. Watkins Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
Like any good story, mine is full of ups, downs, and plot twists along the way. One thing that has been steady is my blue corduroy jacket that dons the FFA logo on the left lapel and my chapter, Kempner, on the back. I entered high school amid the COVID pandemic and the FFA organization became a refuge from all the stress of the pandemic. What started as a desire to socialize during that time has turned into a lifelong passion for agriculture. My Jacket has allowed me to make great friends and develop leadership skills. This summer I had the honor of attending the Texas FFA Convention. To be surrounded by 15,000 peers wearing the same jacket was such an awesome experience. I was also appointed a delegate at the conference and got to vote on policy changes at the state level. In addition, my Jacket allowed me the opportunity to be on the Quiz Team and Livestock Judging Team for our chapter. As secretary of our FFA chapter, I have mastered parliamentary procedure and public speaking. In addition, I have shown three heifers at the county fair, calf scrambled at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and am a current Fort Bend County Fair Queen Contestant. I have faced my share of adversity over the past four years and my Jacket has been there for the journey. My Jacket has been there during my mom’s cancer diagnosis and treatment my freshman year. My jacket was also there when we got the news in January that my older sister, Riley, had passed away suddenly. My Jacket has also been there through two concussions and a broken leg due to cheer. In addition, my Jacket was there when I received my stage 3 Invasive Melanoma cancer diagnosis and treatment. My Jacket has also been there through the typical highs and lows of high school: navigating peer relationships, balancing school and activities, and the stress of being a teenager. I was asked in an interview a few months ago, what the jacket meant to me. I explained to the interviewers that my Jacket represents tradition and belonging to something much bigger than myself. I am united with kids all over America who also wear their corduroy blue jacket with pride. my Jacket represents my pride and commitment to studying and improving agriculture processes. Finally, my Jacket has led me pursue the field of Agriculture. My goal is to become a large animal vet with a specialization in livestock. FFA has allowed me to find my passion amist my obstacles and made me the person that I am today.
