As a child, I would spend all morning at school, and then come home and play school with my dolls in the afternoon. I have loved school since the first day I walked into my K3 classroom. This love for education has stayed with me until now. Ever since I was a small child, I have wanted to be a teacher, so that I would be able to share my love of learning with future generations of children.
When I was in middle school, I had a wonderful math teacher who completely changed the way I saw the world of mathematics. She challenged me to grow as a learner and as a person. It was obvious that she was not only knowledgeable about what she was teaching, but that she was passionate about mathematical literacy. I thrived under her instruction, and she opened my eyes to a whole new way of looking at the world. However, my classmates struggled in math more than they did in any other subject. I soon discovered that I had a talent for explaining these concepts in a way my classmates could relate to them better. This began a passion in me to help students understand mathematical concepts in a way that they can relate to more easily.
Helping students understand math on this deeper level is one of my main career goals. I hope to help students who struggle with understanding mathematics be able to grasp the concepts that they are not understanding. I love seeing someone gain a love for mathematics when a concept finally clicks in their minds and they can apply it to their daily lives. Mathematics impacts our daily interactions with the people who surround us. I hope to help my future students find these practical applications that spring from mathematical concepts so that they might be able to have a more complete life.
This talent I have for teaching and the love I have for learning are perfectly combined with my getting an education degree. I hope to use this degree to impact many generations of students and to share with them, even if it is in a small way, how wonderful learning can be. I am fascinated by the possibility of impacting children's and teenagers' lives, and I am passionate about helping them achieve their full potential and reach their goals. If I can have even half of the impact of the many excellent and knowledgeable teachers who came before me, I will count that as a wonderful legacy to leave behind.
I hope to teach in a middle school or high school after I graduate with my undergraduate degree. I also would love to continue my education by getting a master's degree. I would consider it a huge privilege to be able to use some of my unique skills and experiences to impact students in a great way. I am especially passionate to be able to encourage Hispanic students in the USA to succeed, as well as to help students who struggle in math to be successful. I also hope to be an inspiration to any of my students who love math and education. But most of all, I want to be a teacher who loves her students and helps them to be the best versions of themselves.

Learner Math Lover Scholarship
I have always been fascinated with numbers and the why behind how they work. I never struggled with math in elementary school, and I always enjoyed it. However, when I got into middle school and started learning pre-algebra and geometry, I gained a whole new appreciation for the way that math works. And while I began to love math more and more, I saw my friends and classmates struggling more and more. I soon discovered that I had a talent for explaining these concepts in a way my classmates could relate to them better. This began a passion in me to help students understand mathematical concepts in a way that they can relate to more easily.
I believe that mathematics is a beautiful language, that once understood, opens the student's eyes to so many concepts that we never would have understood without math. I truly believe that mathematics is involved in every aspect of human life. If we took the laws of mathematics out of any one part, or even if we changed one of them, life as we know if would be completely different. Math reveals an order and a logic to our universe. Without mathematics, science would no longer be applicable, technology would not exist, and critical thinking and problem-solving skills would be almost non-existent.

From the time I was born, I had the distinct privilege of having an English teacher for a mother. She knew just how valuable books are for children, and she was passionate about making sure I grew up loving to read. Since I was a very small child, I have sweet memories of my mother reading to me. We started with those classic children's stories like Dr. Seuss, Corduroy, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and I’ll Love You Forever. In those books, I learned about friendship, kindness, and most importantly, just how much my mother loved me.
When I learned to read, a million new worlds were suddenly available to me. Have was nothing I loved more than sitting down with a new book and reading it through from cover to cover. I made many friends in these books like Frog and Toad, Ramona Quimby, the Pevensies, Anne Shirley, and Jo March. Through these stories I traveled the earth and through time. I learned about courage, imagination, love, and resilience. Perhaps best of all, I learned that there is always more to read, and therefore, there will always be more to learn and more worlds to explore.
Of course, this desire to learn has helped my faith grow in unimaginable ways. I have learned to study the Bible for myself, and the Truth within has become so much more real and personal to me. Even now, sharing the great stories of the faith that mean so much to me is one of my favorite things to do.
As I got older, I realized that I enjoy sharing the stories that I love with younger generations. This desire fits in well with my love of children and the calling I have to be a teacher. I have been blessed to have the opportunity to teach many young children and my love for education, specifically sharing knowledge with students, has only grown.
In my first year in college, I discovered that there is an entire field dedicated to sharing stories like these and teaching students to be able to do the same. As I watched students perform in plays and productions, realized just how much I wanted to be part of that. Because of this, I’m currently double majoring in Math Education and Speech Education. I hope to teach in a middle school after I graduate and be able to introduce my students to the wonderful worlds I love. I especially feel blessed to have the gift of being bilingual, and I am excited about the possibility of being able to teach in both English and Spanish.

I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I had a wonderful math teacher in middle school. It was obvious that she was not only knowledgeable about what she was teaching, but that she was passionate about mathematical literacy. I thrived under her instruction, and she opened my eyes to a whole new way of looking at the world. However, my classmates struggled in math more than they did in any other subject. This began a passion in me to help students understand mathematical concepts in a way that they can relate to more easily.
Once I discovered this passion and talent I had for explaining math to teenagers, I became fascinated with the idea of teaching math, specifically to middle and high schoolers. I believe that teachers have some of the greatest impacts possible. In the midst of teacher shortages, low salaries, and an unsupportive society, teachers continue to shine brightly with a passion for educating and a love for their students. I hope to be known as a teacher who loves her students and inspired in them a passion for continued learning. I hope that my love for learning will help my students reach their goals

I hope to use this scholarship to help me cover expenses related to my education. I would like to relieve some pressure off of myself as I finish my degree and begin my teaching career. I would like to graduate debt free, and I understand that this will require a lot of effort from me and others around me. This scholarship money will help me as I continue with my plans to finish my degree, start teaching and hopefully get my masters to help me become a better teacher.
Learner Calculus Scholarship
I have been terrified of math class two times in my life. The first time was when I was in fourth grade. It was the end of the year, and, quite frankly, I had slacked off all year in math class, only doing what was absolutely necessary to get by. As I listened to my teacher introduce the final unit of the year, she said the dreaded words: "We're starting pre-algebra this unit." It was then that I realized that I needed to up my math game for the rest of the year.
The second time I was terrified of math class was when I looked at my university's plan of study and realized that my major required me to take three sememesters of calculus so that I could graduate with a math education degree. At first, I didn't think that I needed calculus, and I definitely did not think I would enjoy these classes. After all, I simply wanted to teach middle schoolers math topics like the Pythagorean Theorem or how to multiply binomials by FOILing. However, I went into my first Calculus class with the best spirits I could muster up at 8 a.m., and, to my surprise, I really enjoyed that first calculus class, and I continued to enjoy the rest of the classes that semester.
What changed that made me go from being terrified of calculus to enjoying a whole semester of it and looking forward to the next? First of all, it was the realization that I could, in fact, do it. While calculus sounds scary, just like algebra did so long ago, it truly is the next step in learning math, even if it sometimes feeels like a leap. Second, I had a wonderful calculus teacher who made a conscious effort to simplify and break down each topic so that it felt obtainable instead of out of my reach. Every class, he would take time to review homework problems and answer any questions we might have. He also always took time to meet with his students so that they could get any additional help they needed. Finally, I got to see how this level of mathematics is applied in the real world, especially in the fields of engineering and computer science. I believe that the applications of calculus in the real world help students understand the importance of math in many fields, including engineering and computer science, but also expanding to other sciences and disciplines. They also help calculus learners see real world applications of mathematics around them. For these reasons, I believe that anyone who wishes to work in or teach in a STEM field should learn calculus.

Through the course of my life one thing has stood out to me: life is valuable and therefore life is worthy of being protected. In 2004, the year I was born, a total of 839,226 abortions were performed in the United States, according to the CDC. What would today be like if all of those babies had survived? Maybe they would be my classmates or coworkers. Maybe they'd have grown up in my city, attending my church and school, or going to the same parks, movie theaters, and grocery stores that I do. How different would all of our lives be if we'd had the opportunity to meet those babies.
I believe that life should be fought for. I have seen many people in my life take action to defend and protect life. My parents prayed to have children for nine years before I was born. They took action to fight for my life when many people would have given up. I am grateful for their teachings on how valuable life truly is.
We have many friends who show me that life is valuable every day. One family, the Rincons, showed me that life was valuable as they took care of their daughter Andrea, a micro-preemie, who was born extremely early. That teaches me that life is valuable at any stage. Several families, the Gillens, the Saldañas, and the VanDelinders, showed me that life is valuable by fostering and adopting children, and then by continuing to support foster and adoptive families by providing necessary supplies to them. That teaches me that life is better when we help each other. Another family, the Hernandezes, showed me that life is valuable by taking in and helping teenagers and young adults from abusive and unsafe situations, even while grieving the loss of two biological children. That teaches me that life is always worth supporting, even when the situation is messy. And countless couples have showed me that life is valuable as they long and pray for children of their own, yet still continuing to invest in the lives of the children and young people around them. That teaches me that life is worth waiting for.
I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with sever organizations and ministries who support the right to life. This past year I worked alongside my school to support and organization that helps provide meals to single mothers and foster families so that they can continue fighting for life in their families. I have also been privileged to be a part of a church that fights for everyone's right to life. I do not plan on stopping my efforts to help families and ministries who fight for life.
As I think back on these families and many others who have influenced me, I think on all of the times I have been able to hold a newborn baby. On the look on the parents', siblings', and grandparents' faces as they stare at their new baby. Life is always valuable. Everyone derserves the chance to be loved and held. Every baby has a right to life that no one should be able to take away.

But most of all, I want to be a teacher who loves her students and helps them to be the best versions of themselves that they can be.

I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. Once I discovered this passion and talent I had for explaining math to teenagers, I became fascinated with the idea of teaching math, specifically to middle and high schoolers. When it came time to choose a major, I knew that I needed something that would help me be able to teach most effectively. I know that having a large understanding of all levels of math and having a passion for teaching them correctly will make all the difference in my ability to teach my future students. Because of this, choosing mathematics education so that I will one day be a more effective math teacher was a very simple decision for me.

I believe that mathematics is a beautiful language, that once understood, opens the student's eyes to so many concepts that we never would have understood without math. I truly believe that mathematics is involved in every aspect of human life, from the houses we live in, to the cars that we drive, to the appliances that we use every day. If we took the laws of mathematics out of any one part, or even if we changed one of them, life as we know if would be completely different. Math reveals order and logic to our universe. Without mathematics, science would no longer be applicable, technology would not exist, and critical thinking and problem-solving skills would be almost non-existent.

In spite of a few wonderful teachers, I also had a number of very bad teachers in middle and high school. This, combined with hard times in my family, in addition to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 made staying motivated in school and in life difficult. However, with the help of good friends, and most importantly, through my faith in God and the influence of Godly people in my life, I got through some of my hardest days, and my desire to make a positive impact on the world was made even stronger.

I grew up in Mexico, in the city of Monterrey. I always felt kind of torn between two cultures: my dad's side of the family is American, while my mom's is from Mexico. Growing up we celebrated holidays and traditions from both cultures, and it was normal for us. I enjoyed this, however, I constantly felt out of place, like no one could relate to my family. I hope to teach in a middle school or high school after I graduate with my undergraduate degree. I also would love to continue my education by getting a master's degree. I would consider it a huge privilege to be able to use some of my unique skills and experiences to impact students in a great way. I am especially passionate to be able to encourage Hispanic students in the USA to succeed because I can relate to the situation that they are living since I lived through it. I also hope to be an inspiration to any of my students who love math and education. But most of all, I want to be a teacher who loves her students and helps them to be the best versions of themselves that they can be.

As a child, I would spend all morning at school, and then come home and play school with my dolls in the afternoon. I have loved school since the first day I walked into my K3 classroom. I especially love getting so invested in a topic that I want to learn every aspect of it. I grew up in a school environment. My parents have worked very closely with schools my entire life, teaching middle school electives, high school English and computer classes, and university-level classes. They passed on to me a great love for education.
Helping students understand math on this deeper level is one of my main career goals. I hope to help students who struggle with understanding mathematics be able to grasp the concepts that they are not understanding.
This talent I have for teaching and the love I have for learning are perfectly combined with my getting an education degree. I hope to use my secondary education degree to impact many generations of students and to share with them, even if it is in a small way, how wonderful learning can be. My mother is deaf. She has been since she got chicken pox as a four-year-old. Ever since then, she has worn hearing aids. Some of my earliest memories, from when I was probably just three or four years old, are of going with my mother to her audiologist's office so that her hearing aids could be tuned or fixed. My mom's hearing aids help her be able to live a normal life and to continue doing things she loves.
Because of her hearing aids, my mother is able to do many things that would otherwise be impossible. She can listen to music, she can hear the doorbell ring or our dog barking when someone is at our door. She could listen to me practice the piano. Now that I'm at college, we can video chat and she can still understand me. My mother can go to church, and she can teach at the school she works at. My mother can hear me laugh, and she can hear when I make sarcastic remarks. She even is safer in emergency situations, because with her hearing aids she can hear fire alarms and emergency sirens.
Despite not being able to completely hear or understand everything happening around her, the hearing aids make it so that my mother can follow conversations, listen to music, watch movies, and do so many other things that would otherwise be impossible. I am grateful my mom has hearing aids because, without them, her life would be so much more silent.

Math reveals an order and a logic to our universe. Without mathematics, science would no longer be applicable, technology would not exist, and critical thinking and problem-solving skills would be almost non-existent.
