There was a time when people doubted my potential, when they thought my struggles were too great for me to ever succeed. I wasn’t the student who always excelled in class, nor was I the one who easily understood new concepts. Growing up, I often felt like I was playing catch-up while others raced ahead. I remember being told that I wouldn’t be able to achieve certain things because of my learning difficulties. People didn’t expect much from me, and I began to wonder if they were right. But it was through these very challenges that I found my true passion and purpose—one that has ultimately inspired me to pursue higher education and a career in Special Education.
Throughout my early schooling, I struggled with learning disabilities that made many subjects feel like mountains I couldn’t climb. Math, reading, and even class participation were areas where I consistently felt left behind. Teachers would often try their best, but the feeling of falling short persisted. I was told I wasn’t “cut out” for certain subjects, which hurt, but also motivated me. Instead of giving up, I worked tirelessly to find new ways to approach my challenges. I learned to embrace strategies that allowed me to break down complex tasks into manageable pieces. I began to take pride in the small victories, whether it was understanding a difficult math problem or reading a passage out loud without getting discouraged.
It wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t fast, but over time, I realized something important: my struggles didn’t define me. They became the driving force behind my desire to help others who were also facing difficulties. During high school, I became involved in the Special Education program, and my world changed. Working with students who had learning challenges, I saw how small adjustments, patience, and compassion could make a world of difference. I realized that the skills I had developed through my own difficulties—patience, perseverance, and creativity—were exactly what I needed to help others succeed.
Through my volunteer work, I found that the difficulties I once thought of as limitations were actually strengths. I had a deep understanding of what it felt like to struggle and a strong desire to ensure that others didn’t feel alone in their journey. It was through these experiences that I decided to pursue college with the goal of earning a degree in Special Education. I knew that I could use my personal journey to inspire and support students who, like me, needed someone to believe in them.
The Special Education program has shown me that academic struggles aren’t a reflection of a person’s potential—they simply require different strategies and a different kind of support. What people once thought of as a disadvantage became the foundation for the work I want to do in education. My experiences with failure and overcoming challenges have taught me resilience, determination, and the importance of looking at problems from different angles. These lessons have shaped me into someone who understands that success isn’t about avoiding difficulties—it’s about learning to push through them.
Pursuing higher education and potentially a certification in Special Education is my way of giving back. I want to be the kind of teacher who understands that no two students are the same and that challenges can often be the stepping stones to success. I want to show my future students that their struggles don’t define them and that with the right support, they can achieve their goals.
This scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of my education, but it would also provide me with the opportunity to continue on my journey of personal growth, all while helping others along the way. It’s a chance to turn my past challenges into something positive, to prove that despite the doubts of others, I have the resilience and determination to succeed. And most importantly, it would allow me to help students see that their challenges, just like mine, can be opportunities for growth and eventual success.
DeeAnn Denney Memorial Girl Scout Scholarship
When I first joined Girl Scouts, I was one of the few boys in the troop. While this might seem unusual to some, I saw it as an opportunity to break boundaries, challenge expectations, and grow as an individual. Girl Scouts has had a profound impact on my life by teaching me leadership, empathy, and the importance of community service. It has also helped me build meaningful relationships and develop skills that will serve me throughout my future.
One of the most significant experiences I had was organizing a food drive to support a local food bank. As part of my troop, I helped plan and execute the event, coordinating volunteers and collecting donations. My leadership role allowed me to connect with others and demonstrate that true leadership comes from listening, organizing, and working toward a shared goal. While my involvement in Girl Scouts as a boy may have been unexpected to some, it taught me that service, kindness, and leadership are qualities that transcend gender and should be embraced by everyone.
In addition to my work with Girl Scouts, I joined the Girls Empowerment Club at my school. Being part of this group has been empowering in its own right, as it gave me a space to advocate for gender equality and support other young people in their personal growth. I helped plan events that promoted self-confidence and spoke out about the importance of equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender. The experience of being involved in both Girl Scouts and the Girls Empowerment Club has not only broadened my perspective on gender but also reinforced my commitment to empowering others.
Being a part of [Girl Scout Council Name] and Troop [Troop Number] has played a pivotal role in shaping the person I am today. The values of kindness, service, and leadership that Girl Scouts stands for are ones I carry with me in all aspects of my life. The skills I’ve developed through my time in Girl Scouts and in the Girls Empowerment Club have equipped me to face future challenges with confidence and compassion.
As I look to the future, I am excited about using the leadership skills and values I’ve learned to make a positive impact in my community and the world. I know that the lessons I’ve learned in Girl Scouts—about being a strong, empathetic leader and supporting others—will guide me as I pursue my dreams of creating meaningful change. Being a boy in Girl Scouts has taught me that true leadership comes from embracing diversity, working together, and empowering those around us, regardless of gender.

My Community and Financial Needs
Since childhood, I have been actively involved in my community, particularly through local outreach programs aimed at helping underserved youth. As a peer mentor for a community after-school program, I’ve worked closely with younger children to foster their academic growth, provide emotional support, and encourage self-confidence. Through this experience, I’ve learned the power of positivity and the impact that mentorship can have on a child's future. It inspired me to pursue a career in social work, where I can continue to work with young people and ensure they have the resources they need to succeed.
Despite my commitment to my education and future career, my financial situation presents a challenge. I am a first-generation college student, and my family has limited financial resources. My parents have supported me in every way they can, but the cost of higher education remains a significant barrier. This scholarship would help ease the financial strain by covering tuition and essential academic expenses, allowing me to focus on my studies and community work. I am determined to pursue my dream of becoming a social worker, and this scholarship will make it more attainable by relieving some of the financial pressures associated with higher education.
Protecting Youth from Bullying and Cyberbullying
Keeping youth safe—both in-person and online—has been a priority for me throughout my community involvement. I have actively participated in school programs designed to address bullying by organizing workshops for both students and parents. These workshops focused on creating open dialogues where children feel safe to express their concerns and emotions. In these sessions, we taught strategies for conflict resolution, empathy, and ways to build supportive friendships. I also worked with teachers to ensure that these principles were embedded within the curriculum, so children not only learned academic content but also how to navigate social challenges safely.
In the digital age, protecting children from cyberbullying has become just as important. I’ve collaborated with local youth centers to raise awareness about the dangers of online harassment. We developed resources for students and families, emphasizing the importance of setting boundaries online, blocking harmful users, and seeking help from trusted adults. Additionally, I have worked to create safe spaces on social media by promoting positive behavior and encouraging students to be upstanders rather than bystanders when they witness cyberbullying.
Moving forward, I am dedicated to continuing my work on these issues in my future career. I plan to use my social work degree to advocate for stronger anti-bullying policies in schools, as well as provide resources to help children and parents cope with the emotional effects of bullying, both in-person and online.
This scholarship represents an opportunity for me to further my education and strengthen my ability to make a positive impact on the lives of others. By alleviating some of my financial burdens, I will be able to focus more on developing my skills, and ultimately, return to my community as a social worker. I am passionate about supporting youth and creating safer, more inclusive spaces for them to thrive. This scholarship will bring me one step closer to making that vision a reality.
Kristie's Kids - Loving Arms Around Those Impacted By Cancer Scholarship
Cancer has impacted my life in profound ways, shaping the person I am today. My journey with cancer began when my mother was diagnosed with the disease when I was in elementary school. I was only in the 4th grade when she passed away, and her death had a deep emotional impact on me. Although I was young, the experience shaped my perspective on life and made me realize the fragility of time.
