Bio

My name is Caleb Young. I am currently a student at NC State University studying Computer Science in the Game Development concentration. My passion in life is to create stories through video games. I want to make a story that will impact and transform society. There are many ways to change the world. People do community service, help out charities, and march in protests to attempt to make the planet a better place. These methods are excellent, a lot of good comes from them, but I have realized that many of these solutions have difficulty changing how other individuals perceive these critical concerns. Many issues arise from individuals who either misunderstand the weight of a situation or do not care enough to comprehend it. Numerous of them occur from everyday people who do not know the damage they're causing to the world and environment. There are just not many ways to change a person's mind. I believe I have found a way through Game Development. A few months before I went to college, I experienced a story that made me realize what I wish to do in life. Then I played a video game that shifted my perspective and helped me realize the power of stories. Stories allow us to have experiences that we would never have otherwise. We get to see others' perspectives, learn concepts we would have never considered, and know what it's like to be in someone else's shoes. In movies and books, you see what happens to others, but in games, everything happens to you. You are not just able to know what it is like to be in someone else’s shoes; you get to walk in them. You are no longer just watching someone else do an action, you are doing those actions. This connection generates a feeling that so many initiatives have a difficult time creating: empathy. Many issues can be ignored as long as the viewer has no connection to them, but empathy takes a problem and makes it real to the one viewing it. I wish to use empathy through stories to create change through the games I create. I want to make a story that will change someone as a story once changed me. I want someone to see something that I have made and decide to become a better person. I want someone to see what I have made and then work harder to improve society because of it.
