    Wicked Fan Scholarship
As a fan of Wicked, I find myself drawn to it on multiple levels, from the magnetic characters and storytelling to its deeper messages about acceptance, friendship, and individuality. Since it first premiered on Broadway, Wicked has captured countless hearts, including mine, by reframing a story everyone thought they knew and exploring the nuances of good and evil through a lens that feels remarkably relevant and poignant. Firstly, the story itself is incredibly compelling. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel, which reimagines The Wizard of Oz from the perspective of the so-called “Wicked Witch of the West,” Wicked provides a fresh and complex view of a familiar tale. What was once a simple story of good versus evil suddenly becomes a layered exploration of societal influence, prejudice, and the power of friendship. The plot dives into the past of Elphaba, the misunderstood, green-skinned outsider, and Glinda, the seemingly perfect “good” witch. Their relationship evolves from rivalry to a profound friendship, challenging stereotypes along the way. Wicked does not offer a black-and-white interpretation of morality, but instead, it plays with shades of gray, a characteristic that resonates with many fans, including myself, who appreciate stories that mirror real-life complexities. The characters, especially Elphaba, are a huge part of what makes Wicked so special. Elphaba is not your traditional protagonist. She’s different, often ostracized, and judged by others based on appearances. Yet, she remains determined to stand up for what she believes in, even when it leads her down a lonely path. Her journey from an insecure young woman to a powerful figure who embraces her identity is inspiring. It’s a reminder that sometimes the things that make us feel alienated can also be our greatest strengths. Her flaws and struggles make her incredibly relatable, especially to those who may have felt like outsiders at some point in their lives. Glinda, on the other hand, represents a different kind of struggle. She’s privileged and adored, yet she battles with her own insecurities and the pressure to maintain her image. Throughout the musical, she learns to shed her superficiality and see the world more compassionately, growing alongside Elphaba. The evolution of Glinda and Elphaba’s friendship, despite their stark differences, underscores the importance of empathy and open-mindedness. This dynamic also speaks to a broader theme within the show: that people are often more complex than they appear, and that real friendships allow us to see and accept these complexities. Beyond its narrative and musical elements, Wicked also offers important social commentary. It explores themes of discrimination, the corrupting influence of power, and the dangers of blindly following authority. Oz is presented as a society plagued by propaganda and fear-mongering, where people are encouraged to reject those who are different. This reflection on real-world issues like prejudice and the pressure to conform gives Wicked a relevance that extends beyond the theater.
    LGBTQ+ Wellness in Action Scholarship
Mental and physical wellness are fundamental aspects of life that influence everything from handling daily stress to connecting with others. When you're mentally and physically well, you’re in a position to think clearly, manage emotions, and approach challenges with resilience. Good health supports not just your own personal growth but also your ability to help those around you. Especially in demanding environments—like graduate school—wellness becomes even more crucial. It affects how effectively you learn, perform, and engage in academic and social activities. For a lesbian graduate student, maintaining mental and physical wellness can come with unique challenges that extend beyond the usual pressures of academia. Graduate school is tough for anyone—balancing a heavy workload, meeting deadlines, and feeling the pressure to excel can be exhausting both mentally and physically. This environment is stressful on its own, but when you add the layer of navigating your identity as part of the LGBTQ+ community, it can intensify these challenges. There can be difficulties in finding inclusive and accepting spaces in academic or social settings. Even in environments that claim to be progressive, issues like microaggressions, heteronormative assumptions, or a lack of representation can take a mental toll. Constantly feeling like you have to prove yourself or represent your community, whether subtly or overtly, can increase stress. This can lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety, or burnout, especially if you feel like you’re carrying the weight of your identity in addition to the academic pressure. Relationships—whether friendships, romantic, or even professional—can also add stress if you’re navigating environments where being a lesbian isn’t fully accepted or understood. Finding a supportive community is essential, but it’s not always easy. The mental strain of dealing with implicit biases, societal expectations, or even internalized pressures can make it harder to maintain a healthy mindset. This can manifest as emotional exhaustion, overwork, or neglecting self-care, all of which are detrimental to your mental wellness. Physical wellness can be equally challenging to maintain. Long hours of studying, working on research, internships, or teaching leave little room for exercise, proper nutrition, or adequate rest. Physical health is often sacrificed when you're overwhelmed with tasks. And when your mental health is strained, it’s even harder to find the motivation to care for your body. Stress and anxiety can lead to poor eating habits or disrupted sleep patterns, and those, in turn, affect how you feel physically. Maintaining mental and physical health as a lesbian graduate student requires finding a balance between personal wellness and external expectations. This might involve setting boundaries to protect your time, seeking out LGBTQ+ affirming spaces or mental health services, and making sure you carve out moments for physical care even when it seems impossible. Staying connected to supportive communities, practicing self-compassion, and prioritizing both your mental and physical health will help create the balance needed to thrive in such a demanding environment. The journey is not easy, but it’s essential for long-term well-being and success.
    Mental Health Scholarship for Women
As a woman pursuing a PhD in social psychology, balancing mental health with the demands of academic life can be quite challenging. The intense pressure to perform at a high level in both research and coursework, along with the personal expectations I may have for myself, can sometimes lead to anxiety, stress, or even feelings of burnout. Mental health can significantly affect academic performance, particularly in terms of focus, productivity, and creativity. When stress builds up, it can be harder to concentrate for long periods of time, making it difficult to read, write, or engage in critical thinking, which is essential for success in a PhD program. Emotional exhaustion can also reduce motivation, causing procrastination or a feeling of being "stuck" in academic work. If anxiety or stress becomes overwhelming, it might lead to perfectionism, which can result in spending excessive time on tasks or hesitating to submit papers because of the fear that they are not "good enough." This can delay progress in completing milestones, such as dissertation chapters or conference presentations. On a personal level, pursuing a PhD often comes with a sense of isolation due to the solitary nature of academic work. This isolation, combined with the pressures of academia, can strain relationships with friends, family, or romantic partners. I may find myself constantly juggling deadlines, which leaves little time for socializing or self-care, potentially creating feelings of loneliness or guilt for not maintaining personal connections. The lack of work-life balance can also lead to neglecting hobbies or interests outside of academia, which are often crucial for maintaining a well-rounded sense of self. When personal life and self-care are neglected, it can create a feedback loop where academic struggles worsen mental health, which in turn further impacts both personal life and academic performance. To maintain mental health while pursuing a PhD, it’s important to be proactive and intentional about self-care. Here are some steps that help keep mental health a priority: 1. Setting Boundaries: Learning to say no to extra responsibilities, like taking on too many teaching assistantships or research projects, is crucial. Setting realistic goals for each day helps manage expectations and avoids burnout. 2. Establishing a Routine: A structured routine, with dedicated time for research, exercise, social activities, and rest, can create balance. Including time to disconnect from work is essential for recharging mentally and emotionally. 3. Seeking Support: Regularly talking to a therapist or counselor to work through academic stress, impostor syndrome, or personal struggles is incredibly helpful. Additionally, joining peer support groups, where I can connect with others in similar situations, offers a sense of community and shared understanding. 4. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practices like mindfulness meditation, yoga, or journaling can help manage stress by creating space to process emotions and clear mental clutter. Regular exercise is also key in managing mental health, as it helps to release endorphins and provides a break from academic tasks. 5. Taking Breaks: Scheduling regular, short breaks during work helps prevent mental fatigue. Taking a day or weekend off occasionally for rest or fun can refresh the mind and boost long-term productivity. 6. Celebrating Small Wins: Academia often has long-term goals, which can make progress feel slow. Celebrating small achievements, like submitting a paper or receiving positive feedback, helps maintain motivation and a sense of accomplishment. By taking steps to actively manage mental health, it’s possible to not only succeed academically but also maintain a healthy and fulfilling personal life during the PhD journey.
    Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
As a dedicated fan, I've found a deep connection with three of Billie Eilish's songs: "When the Party's Over," "Everything I Wanted," and "Happier Than Ever." These tracks, each in their own unique way, have resonated with me on a profound level. "When the Party's Over": This song, with its raw emotional vulnerability, has a profound impact. Billie's portrayal of the desire to distance oneself from a toxic relationship is haunting and deeply relatable. The minimalistic production and her delicate yet powerful vocals create a melancholic atmosphere that is truly captivating. It’s a song that speaks to those moments when you know something isn’t good for you, but the emotional toll of letting go is still immense. "Everything I Wanted": This track feels like a personal confession, touching on the pressures of fame and the complex emotions that come with it. Billie’s exploration of self-doubt, fear, and the struggle to maintain a sense of identity in the face of overwhelming external expectations is profoundly moving. The lyrics, paired with the dreamy, almost ethereal production, make it a song that lingers in your mind long after it’s over. It’s a reminder of the importance of self-acceptance and the value of the people who stand by you no matter what. "Happier Than Ever": This song is a powerful anthem of liberation and self-empowerment. The contrast between the soft, reflective beginning and the explosive, cathartic ending mirrors the journey from emotional suppression to finding your voice. It resonates with me because it captures that moment of breaking free from a toxic situation and reclaiming your strength. The way Billie’s voice evolves from gentle and almost resigned to fierce and unapologetic is incredibly cathartic, making it a song that embodies the relief and power of finally letting go. These songs resonate with me because they reflect different aspects of navigating complex emotions, from vulnerability and self-doubt to empowerment and liberation. Billie's ability to express these feelings with such honesty and artistry is what makes her music so impactful for me.

Reflecting on my life journey as a 43-year-old woman, I am deeply aware of how my personal and professional experiences have led me to pursue higher education. This decision is not merely about acquiring more knowledge but is driven by a lifelong commitment to service, personal growth, and making a meaningful impact on my community. The path I have taken has shaped my values, career aspirations, and unwavering dedication to community service. My career, spanning over two decades, has been rooted in the fields of mental health and substance abuse—areas that are often underfunded yet vital to individual and community well-being. From the beginning, I was drawn to making a difference in these critical areas, and this passion has only grown stronger as I’ve advanced into leadership roles. Currently, as the Executive Director at New Community Corp in Newark, New Jersey, I oversee a department within a $65 million agency. My role involves managing budgets, creating programs, securing funding through grant writing, and overseeing mental health and substance abuse operations. One of my most significant achievements in this role was transforming a department’s $400,000 deficit into a $250,000 surplus in just 18 months. This accomplishment was not just about financial stability; it ensured the continuation of essential services for vulnerable populations. Before this, as the Director of Clinical Services at the same organization, I managed the daily operations of an outpatient program. This position required balancing clinical expertise with administrative responsibilities, including staff management, budget oversight, and compliance with funding agencies. It was a role that strengthened my leadership skills and deepened my commitment to providing high-quality mental health care. My earlier experience as a Team Leader at Turning Point in Paterson, New Jersey, where I directed a substance abuse outpatient program, exposed me to the systemic challenges within the mental health and substance abuse fields. It was here that I recognized the need for systemic change—an insight that drives my current pursuit of a PhD in Social Psychology. The decision to pursue this degree is rooted in my belief in the power of continuous learning and the need to address mental health issues at their core. I aim to use this education to develop innovative programs, influence policy, and advocate for better mental health services, particularly for those most in need. This scholarship is vital to achieving my goals. It will provide the financial support necessary to balance my studies with my professional responsibilities, allowing me to dedicate myself fully to both. With this support, I am confident that I can continue to make a significant impact in my community and the field of mental health. My journey toward higher education is an extension of my lifelong commitment to service, growth, and transformation. With this scholarship, I am poised to further my impact and continue making a difference in the lives of those I serve.

I aspire to be a leader in the field, using my expertise to develop and implement effective mental health programs and policies. My ultimate aim is to create a more compassionate and supportive environment for individuals struggling with mental health issues, ensuring they have access to the resources and care they need to thrive. In the long term, I plan to conduct research that sheds light on the complexities of mental health and informs better practices and interventions. I am particularly interested in exploring the intersection of social factors and mental health and how societal changes can improve mental health outcomes. Over the past decade, I have worked in various capacities within the mental health field. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC), I have provided direct support to individuals and families dealing with a range of mental health and substance use issues. My experience includes working in community mental health centers, hospitals, and private practice. One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been seeing my clients transform as they overcome their challenges and achieve their goals. In addition to my clinical work, I have been actively involved in advocacy and education. I have conducted workshops and training sessions on mental health awareness, aiming to reduce stigma and promote understanding within the community. These efforts have underscored the importance of continued education and advocacy in creating a supportive environment for those with mental health challenges. Pursuing a doctorate in social psychology is the next step in my journey to deepen my understanding of mental health and enhance my ability to effect positive change. This scholarship would provide invaluable support as I strive to achieve my academic and professional goals, honoring the memory of Ethan To by contributing to a world where mental health is prioritized and supported.

As an openly LGBTQIA+ individual and a mental health professional, my journey has been profoundly shaped by my own experiences and those of the community I serve. Growing up, I faced the challenges of understanding and embracing my identity in a world that often felt unwelcoming. These experiences have not only influenced my personal development but also fueled my passion for advocating for mental health and supporting others in their journeys. Discovering my identity was a gradual process marked by moments of confusion, fear, and, ultimately, acceptance. In my early years, I struggled with feelings of isolation and self-doubt, exacerbated by the lack of visible role models and supportive resources. The pressure to conform to societal norms was immense, and the fear of rejection loomed large. These experiences had a significant impact on my mental health, leading to periods of anxiety and depression. However, these challenges also ignited my determination to seek out and create supportive environments for myself and others. I sought therapy and support groups, which played a crucial role in helping me navigate my identity and mental health. Through these experiences, I learned the importance of mental health care, self-acceptance, and the power of community. In my work, I have encountered many clients who, like myself, grapple with the intersection of their LGBTQIA+ identities and mental health. These clients often face higher rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation due to societal stigma and discrimination. My experiences have equipped me with the insight and sensitivity needed to provide compassionate care, advocate for their needs, and empower them to embrace their identities. One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been witnessing the resilience and growth of my LGBTQIA+ clients. Seeing them overcome their challenges and thrive has reinforced my commitment to this work. It has also inspired me to continue advocating for greater acceptance and understanding within the broader community. My experiences as an LGBTQIA+ individual have profoundly influenced my personal and professional life. They have shaped my approach to mental health care, driven my advocacy efforts, and deepened my empathy for those I serve. By leveraging my journey, I strive to create a world where everyone, regardless of their identity, can access the support they need to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

Embarking on my journey through higher education as a 42-year-old non-traditional student, I've encountered my fair share of metaphorical mountains. The decision to pursue a PhD in Social Psychology, after a decade of service in human services, was akin to standing at the base of a daunting climb. Yet, my passion for indoor rock climbing, a hobby I've nurtured alongside my academic and professional endeavors, has equipped me with the resilience, determination, and perspective needed to ascend these challenges. This essay explores how my engagement with rock climbing transcends physical activity, informing my approach to personal growth and my mission to contribute positively to the world. Rock climbing is an exercise in problem-solving and perseverance. Each route, or "problem," requires careful planning, flexibility in approach, and the mental fortitude to persist through failure. These same principles have been pivotal in my academic journey and in my broader ambition to make a meaningful impact in the field of social psychology. The process of identifying a route, planning my moves, and adjusting my strategy in the face of unexpected challenges mirrors the approach I've taken in my studies and professional work. It's a constant balance of leveraging strengths, acknowledging weaknesses, and being prepared to take calculated risks. Moreover, rock climbing has taught me the value of perspective. From the ground, a route can seem insurmountable, but with each move, new paths and possibilities emerge. This shift in perspective is crucial not only in climbing but also in addressing complex social issues within my field. It underscores the importance of resilience, reminding me that obstacles in research and societal change are not dead ends but opportunities for growth and innovation. The sense of community within climbing has also deeply influenced my approach to making the world a better place. Climbing is inherently collaborative; climbers share tips, encouragement, and support. This sense of solidarity and collective endeavor is something I've strived to replicate in my academic and professional life. In human services, and now in social psychology, the goal is to uplift individuals and communities, requiring a collaborative approach that values diverse perspectives and expertise. Through my work, I aim to foster a sense of community that empowers individuals, encourages mutual support, and facilitates positive change. My passion for climbing also reflects my commitment to personal growth and lifelong learning. Just as I continuously seek to improve my climbing skills and tackle more challenging routes, I approach my academic and professional life with a mindset geared towards continuous improvement and exploration. This pursuit of excellence and growth is not confined to personal achievements but extends to my desire to contribute to the advancement of social psychology, aiming to develop insights and interventions that can address societal challenges and improve lives. Indoor rock climbing has been more than a hobby; it has been a metaphor for the climb I undertake daily in my quest to make a meaningful difference in the world. The lessons learned on the climbing wall—perseverance, adaptability, community, and continuous growth—resonate deeply with my academic pursuits and professional ambitions. As I navigate the challenges of being a non-traditional student and aspire to contribute to the field of social psychology, I carry with me the strength, resilience, and perspective gained from my climbing experiences. Through this journey, I am committed to scaling new heights, not just for personal achievement, but with the broader aim of creating positive change and making the world a better place.

Embarking on a journey into higher education at the age of 42, as a non-traditional student and the first in my family to do so, has been a transformative experience, layered with complexities, challenges, and unparalleled rewards. This ambition goes beyond personal achievement; it's about establishing a resource in the community that can provide comprehensive, accessible, and empathetic mental health and substance abuse services. Such an agency would embody my vision of care, integrating my expertise in social psychology to address not just the symptoms but the societal and personal roots of mental health challenges. My goals include expanding my knowledge and skills, networking with professionals in the field, and engaging in research to contribute to the broader understanding of social psychology and mental health. I want my agency to serve as a beacon of hope and a center of excellence in the community, providing evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and holistic care. My decade-long experience in mental health has provided me with a wealth of knowledge and practical skills. Working as an executive director at a mental health and substance abuse agency for low-income individuals, I have witnessed firsthand the complex interplay of socioeconomic factors, mental health, and substance abuse. This role has involved not only direct client interaction but also program development, staff supervision, and navigating the challenges of providing high-quality care in a resource-limited setting. My experiences have extended beyond clinical work to include advocacy, community education, and policy work, given the nature of my role and the population I serve. This has not only helped in destigmatizing mental health issues but also in pushing for systemic changes that can improve access and quality of care for marginalized populations. My career path is a testament to my dedication to serving those in need. My academic achievements and practical experiences have equipped me with the skills necessary to make a significant impact in the lives of individuals struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues. My aspirations reflect my commitment to extending this impact even further, striving to create a space where the most vulnerable can receive the care and support they need. With my background, expertise, and passion, I am well-positioned to continue making meaningful contributions to the field of mental health.

Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram offer individuals and communities the opportunity to share their stories, advocate for causes, and mobilize support on an unprecedented scale. This democratization of public discourse ensures a more varied representation of perspectives. Social media also serves as a powerful educational tool, spreading awareness about crucial issues such as climate change and human rights. Another vital role of social media is in providing support and fostering community. It connects individuals with similar interests or challenges, allowing them to share experiences and support each other. This aspect is particularly beneficial for those who may feel isolated in their immediate physical environments. Social media has also created new economic opportunities, leading to the emergence of professions like social media marketing and digital content creation. These roles have diversified the economy and opened new income channels, especially for the younger generation. However, the challenges posed by social media, such as misinformation, privacy concerns, and its impact on mental health, cannot be overlooked. These issues necessitate responsible and ethical use of the platforms by both the companies that run them and their users. Social media is a testament to human ingenuity and the capacity of technology to connect, empower, and inspire. While it presents significant opportunities for positive change and innovation, it also brings challenges that need careful navigation. The future of social media lies in balancing its potential to make the world a better place with the responsibility to mitigate its negative impacts.
    Mental Health Empowerment Scholarship
As a psychology Ph.D. student with an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) and an LCADC (Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor), my professional journey is deeply entwined with the mental health field. In this essay, I will discuss the significance of mental health in my life and how I strive to advocate for it in various communities. Mental health is fundamental to my life as a student because it directly impacts my ability to learn, grow, and contribute effectively in my field. The rigorous demands of a Ph.D. program, coupled with the responsibilities of being an LCSW and LCADC, require a sound state of mental well-being. As a dedicated psychology student, I have harnessed various online platforms, tools, and resources to deepen my understanding and enhance my application of psychological knowledge. This essay outlines these tools and elucidates how they have significantly contributed to my learning journey. One of the primary online platforms I utilize is academic databases like PsycINFO, JSTOR, and Google Scholar. These repositories are treasure troves of peer-reviewed articles, research papers, and case studies. They have been instrumental in helping me access current research and diverse perspectives in psychology. This access has broadened my knowledge and honed my critical thinking skills, enabling me to analyze and interpret complex psychological concepts effectively. LGBTQ+ Wellness in Action Scholarship
As a lesbian graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in Social Psychology, the intersection of my personal identity and academic pursuit deeply informs my understanding of mental and physical wellness. This essay aims to articulate why my wellness is crucial to me and the challenges I encounter in maintaining it amidst the demanding landscape of graduate studies. Firstly, mental and physical wellness are personal concerns and central to my academic and professional effectiveness. I'm a licensed mental health professional, possessing both an LCSW and an LCADC. In my field, which demands a high level of cognitive engagement and emotional intelligence, mental clarity and physical health are indispensable. As someone who aspires to contribute significantly to the understanding of social dynamics, particularly in the context of LGBTQ+ communities, being mentally and physically fit enhances my ability to conduct meaningful research, engage deeply with complex theories, and empathize with the diverse individuals I study. My wellness journey is profoundly intertwined with my identity as a lesbian. Navigating a world where heteronormative paradigms are pervasive, I often encounter subtle forms of prejudice and exclusion. This can take a toll on my mental health, manifesting as stress, anxiety, or a sense of isolation. Additionally, finding safe, inclusive spaces for physical wellness, such as gyms or wellness groups, can be a challenging. Thus, maintaining my mental and physical health is a personal goal and a form of resilience against societal pressures. The academic environment itself presents unique challenges. The pressure to excel and the competitive nature of Ph.D. programs can lead to stress and burnout. Long hours of study, research, and teaching responsibilities often mean that self-care takes a back seat. This imbalance can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and depression, which are common among graduate students. On the physical front, sedentary routines dominated by hours of reading, writing, and lab work can lead to various health issues, from poor posture to chronic fatigue. Furthermore, as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I face additional layers of complexity. The struggle for acceptance, both personally and professionally, the fear of being judged or marginalized because of my sexuality, and the constant effort to advocate for equality can be emotionally draining. These factors can significantly impact my mental wellness, requiring additional effort and resources. To address these challenges, I have found it imperative to develop a robust support system within and outside the academic sphere. Engaging with peer groups, seeking mentorship, and participating in LGBTQ+ advocacy has been vital for my mental health. Additionally, I prioritize physical wellness through regular exercise, mindful nutrition, and adequate rest despite the demanding nature of my studies. My mental and physical wellness is central to my happiness and effectiveness as a student and fundamental to my identity and role as an advocate and researcher in social psychology. The challenges I face in maintaining this wellness underscore the need for holistic support systems, inclusive spaces, and a greater awareness of the unique pressures faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in academia. This scholarship would support my educational journey and bolster my commitment to maintaining and advocating for the wellness of individuals in diverse and often marginalized communities.

    Eden Alaine Memorial Scholarship
When my father was diagnosed with lung cancer, our family's world was turned upside down. The doctor's words hung heavy in the air, creating an intense tension that even the sterile whiteness of the hospital couldn't dispel. For many, cancer is synonymous with the end; however, for my father, it was more like a turning point. We rallied around him. Chemotherapy sessions became family outings, and the oncology ward turned into our second home. My father endured it all with remarkable grace as if he wore his illness like a badge of honor. Through the process, he never lost his sense of humor, always quick to make a joke about his receding hairline or the "gourmet" hospital food. After months of aggressive treatment, he started to get better. He started putting on weight again and keeping food down. Things started looking up for him. In fact, the doctors were hopeful and told us he was showing signs of improvement and would likely live a long life after this. With my wedding on the horizon, life seemed to be returning to normal. Our family was whole again, and we were looking forward to celebrating this new chapter. Then, just one week before the wedding, my father started looking pale and had trouble breathing. He was rushed back to the hospital and diagnosed with COPD. He was in the hospital during my wedding, so my mother had to walk me down the aisle. She brought him back some cake and showed him pictures. I can only imagine how it broke him not to be able to see his first daughter get married. Every phone call after that became a gut-wrenching anticipation of the worst news. Then, one day, I was at the gym, and I got a text from my mother saying my father had coded and the hospital was starting CPR. Minutes felt like hours after that. Then, finally, came the final message. “He’s gone.” In the wake of his passing, I was left grappling with a myriad of emotions. While my heart was shattered, I also felt a sense of relief for him; his long battle was finally over, and he could rest. But the gravity of his absence weighed heavily on our lives, casting a shadow over even the happiest moments. It's a haunting experience to be winning a battle but lose the war. My father's journey was a powerful reminder that life is unpredictable and that joy and sorrow are inseparable companions. Even though he couldn't be there to share in the celebration of my wedding, his love and spirit were ever-present. Through the trials and tribulations, my father taught me the true essence of resilience, love, and the complex beauty of human life. While he may not have been physically present at my wedding or during the final stages of his life, his indomitable spirit remains a guiding force, inspiring us to face life’s challenges with courage and grace. The only thing I ever wanted was to make my father proud of me. I’ve worked hard in my career to get a promotion at my job and decided to go back to graduate school and get my doctorate. One thing he always wanted to help me with was losing weight, so I began doing that, too. I’ve lost just shy of 40 pounds now. I owe my father for all of this. He’s truly my hero, and I can only hope he knows that.
