Life has tested me in ways I never expected. When I was nine, my dad left, and my mom worked tirelessly to raise my twin brother and me. Now, as she battles breast cancer, I see firsthand the impact of both physical and mental health struggles. Her fight has only deepened my passion for nursing—I want to be the kind of nurse who ensures no patient or family feels alone in their hardest moments.
Despite challenges, I’ve maintained a 3.81 GPA, led my high school lacrosse team, and earned acceptance into Emmanuel College’s nursing program, where I’ll also play college lacrosse. But tuition is a burden my single mom can’t take on alone.
As a part Native American student, I know firsthand how diversity in healthcare improves patient outcomes. I’m determined to be a compassionate, culturally aware nurse who advocates for better care in underserved communities.
With your support, I can take the next step toward this goal. Every dollar brings me closer to making a real impact in healthcare—and I won’t take a single bit of it for granted.

My Journey of Perseverance and Ambition
Throughout my life, I have encountered challenges that tested my resolve, but none have defined me as much as my journey to overcome financial hardship while striving for academic success. One of my greatest achievements to date has been balancing rigorous academic demands with the need to support my family financially during high school. This experience not only honed my time-management skills and determination but also instilled in me a deep understanding of the value of perseverance.
During my sophomore year, I took on a part-time job to help cover household expenses. While many of my peers could focus solely on their studies, I learned early on that education is a privilege earned through hard work and sacrifice. Juggling work, school projects, and extracurricular activities was not easy; there were nights when exhaustion threatened to overwhelm me and moments when I doubted if I could continue on this path. However, each challenge was met with a resolve to succeed—a resolve fueled by the desire to create a better future for myself and my family. This balancing act remains my proudest achievement because it was a testament to my ability to push forward, even when the odds were against me.
This experience taught me invaluable lessons about discipline, responsibility, and resilience. I discovered that obstacles are not roadblocks but stepping stones to greater opportunities. The struggles I faced transformed into lessons about self-belief and the importance of setting clear, achievable goals. I learned that the true measure of success isn’t just in academic accomplishments or financial gains, but in the strength and perseverance one demonstrates in the face of adversity. It was during these moments of hardship that I realized my own capacity for hard work and the importance of maintaining a positive outlook, even when circumstances were far from ideal.
Looking forward, I am determined to leverage these experiences as I pursue higher education. I aspire to enroll in an undergraduate program that not only challenges me academically but also nurtures my passion for social justice and community service. I am driven by a desire to give back to communities that have supported me throughout my life and to help pave the way for future generations facing similar financial struggles. By pursuing a degree in [insert your field of interest], I hope to develop the skills necessary to influence change and create programs that provide educational opportunities to low-income students.
Receiving the WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship would be a tremendous honor and a vital resource as I work towards these goals. The scholarship represents more than financial assistance—it is a validation of the hard work and determination that have defined my journey thus far. It would allow me to focus more fully on my studies, participate in campus life, and ultimately contribute to breaking the cycle of poverty that so many students face. With this support, I am confident that I can transform my challenges into stepping stones towards a successful, fulfilling future.
In conclusion, my greatest achievement has been the perseverance and self-discipline I cultivated during a challenging period of my life. These qualities continue to drive me every day and fuel my ambition to succeed academically and professionally. I am eager to embrace the opportunities that higher education offers and am committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others facing similar obstacles.
Evan James Vaillancourt Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, I knew I wanted a career that allowed me to make a direct impact on others. Nursing is more than a profession—it is a calling that requires skill, compassion, and resilience. My ultimate goal is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), where I can provide critical care to patients undergoing surgery and medical procedures. The ability to comfort patients, ensure their safety, and play a vital role in life-saving situations drives my passion for this field.
Growing up in a single-parent household, I learned the value of perseverance. My father left when I was nine, and my mother worked tirelessly to support my twin brother and me. She has always been my role model, demonstrating strength in the face of adversity. Recently, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, forcing her to take time off work and adding financial strain to our family. Seeing her fight through this challenge has only deepened my motivation to pursue a career in healthcare, where I can provide care and comfort to those going through difficult times.
Despite these challenges, I have remained dedicated to my education and personal growth. I have maintained a 3.81 GPA while balancing rigorous coursework, athletics, and leadership roles. As a lacrosse player and team captain, I have developed discipline, teamwork, and leadership—qualities that will serve me well as a nurse. I know that CRNAs play a crucial role in ensuring patient safety during critical moments, and I am committed to excelling in my studies to reach this goal.
Beyond academics, I have been actively involved in my community. Volunteering has given me the opportunity to serve others and reinforce my commitment to making a difference. Whether assisting at local events or supporting those in need, I have seen firsthand the importance of compassion and selflessness. These experiences have strengthened my belief that healthcare is not just about treating illnesses but about caring for people as a whole.
My family’s military background has also shaped my perspective on dedication and sacrifice. My grandfather served in the Vietnam War as a tunnel rat, facing extreme dangers to protect our country. His bravery and resilience inspire me, and while my path is different, I see nursing as my own way of serving—providing life-saving care and support to patients in critical situations.
I am preparing to attend Emmanuel College to pursue my nursing degree while continuing to play lacrosse at the collegiate level. This scholarship would help ease the financial burden of my education, allowing me to focus on my coursework and clinical experiences without the added stress of covering additional costs. More importantly, it would allow me to carry forward the legacy of service that Evan James Vaillancourt embodied—using my passion for nursing to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others every day.
Lotus Scholarship
Growing up in a single-parent household has shaped me into the person I am today. When my dad left when I was nine, my mom became my rock, balancing work and parenting on her own. Recently, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, forcing her to take time off work and adding financial strain to our family. Watching her persevere through hardship has instilled in me a relentless work ethic and deep empathy for others.
Despite these challenges, I have remained committed to my goals. I’ve maintained a 3.81 GPA, balanced rigorous coursework, and played lacrosse at a high level. As captain this season, I’ve learned leadership, responsibility, and the importance of teamwork—qualities that will serve me well in my future career as a nurse. I’ve also worked hard to secure scholarships to make my dream of attending Emmanuel College possible.
My experiences have fueled my passion for nursing. I understand struggle and the importance of support, so I want to help others in their most vulnerable moments. I plan to use my career to make a difference in my community by providing compassionate, hands-on care. Right now, I am actively working toward my goals by excelling academically, staying dedicated to my sport, and preparing for the rigorous journey of nursing school.
This scholarship would ease the financial burden of college expenses beyond tuition, allowing me to focus on my education and future. More importantly, it would be an investment in someone who has faced adversity and is determined to turn it into a force for good.
Success Beyond Borders
Against the Current
FADE IN:
A dim hospital corridor hums with fluorescent lights. I sit in a stiff chair, gripping the armrests. My twin brother is beside me, silent. Beyond the heavy door, my mother speaks with the doctor. Words like treatment and time off work drift through the cracks, but my mind refuses to make sense of them.
I was seventeen when I learned my mother had breast cancer. She had always been our rock, the one who never faltered—even when my father left when I was nine. But that day, everything changed. The woman who had always taken care of me now needed care herself.
I wanted to be strong for her. I threw myself into school and lacrosse, determined to stay focused. But seeing my mom battle something she couldn’t control made me feel helpless. I kept thinking about the nurses who reassured her, who explained things with patience and kindness. That’s when it clicked—I didn’t want to feel helpless anymore. I wanted to be the person who stepped in when families like mine were lost in a storm they never saw coming.
That’s why I’m pursuing nursing.
CUT TO:
A lacrosse field. The sun hangs low in the sky, casting long shadows across the grass. My jersey clings to my skin, sweat dripping from my brow. The captain’s band around my arm isn’t just a piece of fabric—it’s a symbol of everything I’ve learned about resilience, leadership, and pushing through when things get tough.
Lacrosse has always been more than a sport for me. It has been my outlet, my challenge, my reminder that no battle is won without struggle. When I was named captain, I became the one my teammates looked to in tough moments. That role has shaped me, teaching me how to lead with patience and strength, skills I know will stay with me in nursing.
Just like in lacrosse, nursing requires teamwork, quick thinking, and the ability to perform under pressure. It’s about more than just skill—it’s about heart. I want to bring that same leadership and drive into the medical field, ensuring every patient I care for knows they are seen, heard, and valued.
CUT TO:
A hospital room, but this time, I’m not in the waiting area. I’m standing beside a patient, wearing scrubs, a stethoscope draped around my neck. My hands are steady as I check vitals, my voice calm as I reassure them. This is where I belong.
I see my future clearly—walking into my first shift as a nurse, feeling the weight of responsibility but also the overwhelming sense of purpose. I’ll be the one standing by a mother’s bedside, telling her she’s not alone. I’ll be the one explaining a diagnosis to a scared family, offering them the comfort they desperately need. I’ll be the one making a difference, just as the nurses who cared for my mother did for us.
VOICE OVER:
Life has thrown obstacles my way—loss, struggle, uncertainty—but I’ve learned to push against the current, to keep moving forward no matter how strong the tide. My mother’s battle with cancer showed me the deep connection between physical and mental health. It taught me that true strength isn’t about never falling—it’s about getting back up, again and again.
As a part Native American student, I also understand how crucial representation is in healthcare. Patients deserve providers who understand them—not just their symptoms, but their backgrounds, struggles, and fears. I want to be that kind of nurse, bridging the gap between medicine and human connection.
My next step is Emmanuel College, where I will pursue my nursing degree while playing college lacrosse. But this journey isn’t just about me—it’s about the lives I’ll impact along the way. This scholarship will help me take the next step toward becoming a nurse who leads with both skill and compassion.
This is just the beginning of my story. And I can’t wait for the next scene.
FADE TO BLACK.
Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
Growing up in a low-income household, I was often exposed to the financial struggles that many families face. My mom, a single parent, worked tirelessly to provide for me and my twin brother, but there were times when money was tight, and we had to make tough choices. While my mom did her best to manage our finances, there was often little room for teaching about saving, budgeting, and understanding credit. As a result, I entered high school with little knowledge of financial literacy, and I realized that many of my peers were in the same boat.
Throughout my high school years, I’ve started to recognize the importance of financial education. During my freshman year, I opened my first bank account, and though I felt empowered to manage my money, I soon realized how little I understood about budgeting, saving, and how credit worked. I found myself sometimes making poor spending choices because I didn’t fully grasp the long-term consequences of those actions. Additionally, I wasn’t taught how to build credit or how to avoid common financial pitfalls.
However, I decided to take control of my financial education. I started reading books and articles about personal finance, and I became more interested in how financial systems work. I learned about the importance of creating a budget and how to track spending to avoid unnecessary debt. I began to take steps to improve my financial habits, such as saving a portion of my allowance for emergencies and avoiding impulse purchases.
I’ve also sought out opportunities to educate myself further, including attending financial literacy workshops offered at my school. These workshops helped me better understand the importance of building a solid credit history, managing debt responsibly, and planning for future goals like college and career. I realized that financial literacy is a tool that can open doors to opportunities, and I’m committed to mastering it so that I can build a secure future.
Looking ahead, I plan to use the knowledge I gain from financial education to make informed choices that will benefit my future. As I prepare to attend Emmanuel College for nursing, I plan to create a realistic budget that will allow me to balance tuition costs, living expenses, and personal spending. I want to build and maintain a good credit score so that when it’s time to purchase a car or home, I can do so without incurring unmanageable debt. I also want to pass along what I’ve learned to my family and peers, so they can avoid financial traps and make choices that will improve their financial futures as well.
In conclusion, my experiences growing up in a low-income household have shaped my understanding of the importance of financial literacy. Through self-education and taking proactive steps to improve my financial habits, I feel more empowered to navigate the financial world. With the financial education I’m gaining, I plan to better my future, not only by making informed decisions about my money but also by sharing my knowledge with others in my community.

Faith has always been a cornerstone of my life, influencing the decisions I make, the way I approach challenges, and how I envision my future. From a young age, I have been taught that God’s guidance and love provide strength during difficult times and a foundation for pursuing one’s dreams. As I navigate the journey of high school and prepare for my next step into college, I am continually reminded of how faith has shaped my life and how it will play an essential role in my future career.
Growing up, I faced numerous obstacles that could have easily discouraged me from pursuing my passions and ambitions. However, it was through my faith that I found the courage to keep going. I was taught to trust that God has a plan for me, even when the path isn’t clear. This belief has allowed me to stay focused on my goals, despite setbacks and challenges. I’ve learned to lean on my faith during tough moments, asking for strength and wisdom to continue moving forward.
My faith has also taught me the importance of integrity and moral conduct in all aspects of life. I believe that true success is not measured by wealth or status, but by how we live our lives and the impact we have on others. I see my career not just as a way to achieve personal success, but as an opportunity to serve others and contribute to the greater good.
Through my education and future career, I hope to reflect the same dedication and principles that have been modeled for me in my faith. Just as the immigrants who built the travel center industry persevered and achieved success through hard work and integrity, I too hope to use my talents and faith to make a lasting impact. I know that with God’s guidance, I can achieve my dreams while staying true to my moral values and helping others along the way.
In conclusion, my faith has been an unwavering source of strength throughout my life, and I know it will continue to guide me in my future endeavors. Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Mental health has always been a deeply personal subject for me, one that I have had to confront in different ways throughout my life. Nearly 50 years ago, my mother, Ethel Hayes, took her own life. She was a kind, courageous woman who struggled with the weight of depression and the harsh realities of her inner and outer world. Her passing left me not only grieving the loss of a loved one but also grappling with the deep silence around mental health, especially within the Black community.
Growing up, mental health wasn’t something openly discussed in our home or community. The stigma surrounding it often left me with a sense of isolation, making it difficult for me to process my emotions and seek help. For years, I suppressed my feelings, believing that keeping everything bottled up was the only way to move forward. However, this approach ultimately led to immense personal struggles, leaving me disconnected from my own emotional well-being.
As I navigated my journey, I began to realize that the silence around mental health was doing more harm than good. It perpetuated feelings of shame, guilt, and hopelessness, preventing individuals from seeking the support they so desperately needed. My mother's death was a painful reminder that ignoring mental health challenges does not make them disappear – it only intensifies them.
Through this experience, my perspective on life and relationships began to shift. I realized the importance of openness, vulnerability, and understanding when it comes to mental health. It is essential to break the cycle of silence and shame that has plagued so many communities, particularly the Black community, where mental health is often dismissed or misunderstood. The more I learned about the struggles many people face, the more I felt compelled to use my own experiences to help others.
In my personal relationships, I’ve come to value empathy and active listening. I’ve learned that offering a safe space for others to share their feelings can be transformative. By simply acknowledging the pain others carry, we can begin to normalize conversations about mental health and offer support in ways that can heal rather than hurt.
My experience with mental health has also significantly influenced my aspirations. I am determined to contribute to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly within marginalized communities. I believe that by fostering a culture of compassion, understanding, and open dialogue, we can create a world where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health. My goal is to pursue a career in psychology or counseling, where I can support individuals struggling with mental health challenges and advocate for a more inclusive and supportive system.
The journey with mental health has shaped my beliefs, making me realize that healing begins with self-compassion and the courage to speak out. It has taught me that we are not alone in our struggles, and that there is strength in vulnerability. By continuing to honor my mother’s memory, I hope to inspire others to share their stories and seek the help they need to heal.
Raise Me Up to DO GOOD Scholarship
Growing up in a single-parent home, I have experienced firsthand the sacrifices and determination that my mother displayed in raising me and my twin brother. Despite the financial and emotional challenges that often come with being a single parent, she has always shown us love, strength, and resilience. Her ability to handle the weight of the world while still providing us with opportunities and support has shaped who I am today and continues to influence my ambitions for the future.
My mom’s dedication to our well-being, even when times were tough, taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. There were moments when she worked multiple jobs to ensure we had everything we needed, from basic necessities to extracurricular activities. She often put her own dreams on hold to make sure we had the resources and guidance to pursue ours. Her sacrifices were not only about providing for us financially but also about fostering a sense of self-worth and resilience. From her, I learned that setbacks are a natural part of life, but they should never stop you from moving forward. These lessons have been instrumental in shaping my character and my desire to help others.
Being raised in a single-parent home also meant that I witnessed the strength it takes to overcome adversity. There were times when things were uncertain, and my mom had to rely on her inner strength and resourcefulness to navigate difficult situations. Her example taught me that even when faced with challenges, it is possible to stay grounded and focused on your goals. It instilled in me a sense of responsibility—not only to myself but also to my community. I am driven to make a positive impact and help others the way my mom helped me.
As I look ahead to the future, I am uncertain about the exact career I will pursue, but I know I want to make a difference. Whether through healthcare, education, or community service, my goal is to use my talents to serve others. I am passionate about biology and anatomy, and I am drawn to the idea of being a nurse, where I can combine my love for science with my desire to help those in need. However, I also want to remain open to other opportunities where I can continue to impact people’s lives in meaningful ways.
I am inspired by my mom’s ability to adapt and grow in the face of adversity, and I aim to do the same. I want to use my education and skills to be a source of support for those who may be struggling, whether that’s through direct service or by advocating for positive change in society. My experience being raised by a single mother has solidified my belief that compassion, perseverance, and a strong work ethic can overcome any challenge.
In conclusion, my upbringing has not only shaped who I am but also reinforced my ambition to help others. The lessons I’ve learned from my mom’s strength, resilience, and selflessness will continue to guide me as I strive to make a positive difference in the world, whatever path I ultimately choose to follow.
Stewart Family Legacy Scholarship
The fields of leadership and science are intrinsically linked, shaping the trajectory of our future in ways both profound and transformative. As a high school senior preparing to enter the field of science, I recognize how both leadership and science serve as drivers for change, innovation, and progress. These two elements, when combined, have the power to push boundaries, break through barriers, and create a better, more equitable world for future generations.
Science, by its very nature, is all about exploration and discovery. It is a constantly evolving field that drives innovation and enables us to solve the world's most pressing issues, from healthcare advancements to environmental protection. Science helps us understand the world around us and offers solutions to some of our most complex problems. But it is the leadership in science that truly magnifies its impact. Leaders in the scientific community guide research, bring together diverse teams of experts, and inspire innovation through their vision and commitment. The ability to lead in the scientific field means more than just having knowledge; it means empowering others to think critically, challenge assumptions, and work collaboratively toward a common goal.
Leadership in science is especially crucial when addressing global challenges such as climate change, public health crises, and the advancement of technology. A great leader in science not only conducts groundbreaking research but also uses their platform to advocate for policy changes, educate the public, and rally resources. They understand the need for cross-disciplinary collaboration and are skilled at guiding teams of scientists, engineers, and experts to achieve breakthroughs that can improve lives. Leadership shapes the direction of scientific inquiry and ensures that the innovations we make are applied for the common good.
For example, the leadership of scientists during the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the incredible power of combining science with leadership. Researchers led efforts to develop vaccines in record time, guiding a global response to an unprecedented health crisis. Their ability to lead teams and collaborate across nations and sectors was essential to this success. Without strong leadership, scientific breakthroughs could not have had the far-reaching impact that they did, highlighting how vital leadership is in maximizing the potential of science.
In my own journey as a student interested in science, I have worked to develop my own leadership skills by participating in science fairs, group projects, and mentoring younger students in the sciences. These experiences have taught me that leadership is not about authority or control, but about empowering others, being an active listener, and fostering an environment where ideas can thrive. In science, collaboration is key, and strong leadership ensures that each voice is heard and valued. I aspire to carry these leadership skills forward as I pursue a career in science, whether that involves conducting research, developing new technologies, or helping to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and practical solutions.
Looking to the future, I am excited about the role that both science and leadership will play in solving some of humanity's most critical issues. As a future scientist, I hope to contribute to innovations that can address health disparities, mitigate climate change, and improve technology to better the lives of people around the world. I know that leadership will be essential in achieving these goals. By combining the power of science with strong, ethical leadership, we can create a future where progress is both innovative and equitable, and where the next generation of scientists can continue to build upon the discoveries we make today.
Wicked Fan Scholarship
From the first time I heard the opening chords of "Defying Gravity," Wicked captivated me. This iconic Broadway musical isn't just a show—it's a life-changing experience that speaks to my core values of courage, identity, and standing up for what I believe in. Set in the magical world of Oz, Wicked reimagines the well-known story of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, offering an inspiring tale of friendship, personal growth, and the search for meaning. The musical’s themes resonate deeply with me, and it has taught me invaluable lessons that have influenced my life.
One of the most powerful aspects of Wicked is its portrayal of Elphaba, the misunderstood "Wicked" Witch. Elphaba's journey toward self-acceptance and her battle against societal labels have deeply impacted me. Growing up, I struggled with fitting in and often felt that I didn’t quite belong. I could relate to Elphaba’s feeling of being an outsider and her determination to embrace who she truly is, despite the judgment of others. Her powerful anthem, "Defying Gravity," represents the ultimate moment of freedom—choosing to live authentically and not be confined by others' expectations. It reminded me that it’s okay to be different, and in fact, that difference is something to celebrate.
Glinda, too, has her own transformative arc. From a superficial, self-absorbed character to someone who learns the depth of true friendship and self-worth, Glinda’s evolution taught me the importance of staying true to my values and learning from my mistakes. Her journey resonated with me in moments when I’ve had to confront my own misconceptions about what it means to be successful and how to stay grounded amidst external pressures. "For Good" beautifully encapsulates the lasting impact of relationships and how we grow through them. That song is a reminder that we all leave a mark on each other, and the connections we form are integral to who we become.
Beyond the characters, the unforgettable music is another reason I’m such a fan of Wicked. Songs like "Popular" are not only catchy but also convey deeper lessons about identity and the desire for validation. The musical score is so powerful that I can’t help but feel uplifted every time I listen to it. Whether I’m struggling with a challenge or celebrating a victory, Wicked’s music provides a sense of empowerment and reassurance that everything is possible, as long as I remain true to myself.
In the upcoming Wicked movie adaptation, I’m especially excited to see Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo bring these iconic roles to life. The anticipation surrounding this new version of the story only amplifies the impact Wicked has had on my life. It’s not just about the magic of Oz—it’s about finding the courage to stand tall, regardless of the obstacles. Wicked has encouraged me to defy my own limits, pursue my passions without fear, and always stay true to who I am.
In conclusion, Wicked has been a source of inspiration for me. It’s not just a musical; it’s a reminder that we can all overcome adversity and become the heroes of our own stories. The characters’ growth, the music, and the themes of friendship, identity, and standing up for what we believe in continue to inspire me daily. It’s a musical that teaches you to embrace your uniqueness, and for that, I will always be a fan.
Lucent Scholarship
From a young age, I have always been drawn to helping others, whether it was volunteering, tutoring classmates, or simply being a supportive friend. However, it wasn’t until I encountered the challenges faced by my own family, particularly my mom’s battle with breast cancer, that I realized how deeply I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare, specifically nursing.
When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was 17. At that age, I had never experienced anything quite so life-changing. My mom, a strong and independent woman, was suddenly facing the harsh reality of a diagnosis that would affect not only her health but our entire family. As a single mother, she had always been the pillar of support for my twin brother and me. Now, it was our turn to be there for her, but it was challenging to navigate the healthcare system and understand the medical jargon that came with her treatment. It was in these moments that I saw the importance of having a nurse who could provide not only medical care but also emotional support for both patients and their families.
I will never forget the nurse who worked closely with my mom throughout her treatment. She was knowledgeable, compassionate, and empathetic. Her ability to break down complex medical information and explain it in a way that we could understand gave us a sense of control during an overwhelming time. More than that, her genuine care for my mom’s well-being gave me hope and comfort. I realized that nursing is not just about treating illness—it’s about serving the whole person, addressing their physical, emotional, and psychological needs. That experience solidified my passion for nursing and has driven me to pursue a degree in nursing at Emmanuel College.
While the situation with my mom was difficult, it was also a transformative experience for me. It gave me the clarity to understand that I wanted to dedicate my life to helping others through some of their most vulnerable moments. I have seen firsthand how healthcare workers, especially nurses, make a lasting impact on their patients’ lives. The compassion, dedication, and skill they exhibit are qualities I aspire to embody. It is my goal to become a nurse who can provide the same level of care, compassion, and hope that I witnessed during my mom’s treatment.
This scholarship will significantly help me as I embark on my journey to becoming a nurse. It will allow me to focus more on my studies and less on the financial burdens that come with pursuing a college education. It will help me take the next step in my academic journey and further my commitment to a career where I can make a difference in the lives of others.
In conclusion, my passion for nursing was born from personal experience—seeing the care and support my mom received from her nurse during her fight with cancer inspired me to pursue a career where I can provide that same level of care to others. I am determined to continue learning, growing, and one day making a lasting impact in the healthcare field. This scholarship would provide me the opportunity to pursue my dream and contribute to positive change in the community, especially for underrepresented individuals who may face barriers to accessing quality healthcare.
Redefining Victory Scholarship
Success is a deeply personal concept. For some, it’s defined by academic achievements and prestigious career titles. For others, it may be rooted in the fulfillment of passions, personal growth, or overcoming life’s challenges. For me, success is about finding balance between my aspirations, values, and the impact I can make on the world. It’s not only about achieving specific milestones but also about continually growing and pushing myself to become a better version of who I am meant to be.
Growing up, I was constantly encouraged to work hard and chase my dreams, but I also learned that success isn’t always linear. My success isn’t just about getting the perfect grades or landing a dream job; it’s about resilience, learning from failure, and making the most of the opportunities I’m given. It’s about balancing my academic ambitions with my passions for helping others, growing in my personal and professional life, and contributing to my community.
I’ve always had a passion for helping others, especially in healthcare, which is why I’ve chosen to pursue a nursing degree. As a future nurse, I want to make a meaningful impact on others' lives by providing care and compassion in moments when they need it most. To me, success in this field isn’t just about providing clinical care; it’s about creating an environment where patients feel seen, heard, and cared for—something I believe every individual deserves. By following this path, I hope to not only fulfill my own goals but to contribute to the well-being of those around me.
Being accepted to Emmanuel College to pursue a nursing degree is a huge step toward this goal, but it’s just the beginning. How Coming from a Single-Parent Household Has Shaped My Educational Journey and My Plans to Give Back to My Community
Growing up in a single-parent household has profoundly shaped my perspective on life and education. My mother, a courageous and resilient woman, has been my greatest inspiration. She raised my twin brother and me on her own after my father left when I was just nine years old. Despite the challenges of working multiple jobs and navigating financial struggles, my mom never let those obstacles deter her from supporting us in every possible way.
As a child of a single parent, I’ve learned the importance of hard work, perseverance, and adaptability. I’ve watched my mom sacrifice so much for us, and in turn, I developed a strong sense of responsibility. I knew that if I wanted to achieve my dreams and attend college, I would have to work hard to make that a reality. My mom’s determination to provide for us instilled a similar work ethic in me, and it pushed me to maintain a high GPA and stay focused on my goals despite the challenges we faced as a family.
Being raised in a single-parent household also taught me empathy and the importance of community. I saw how my mom’s network of friends, family, and neighbors supported us during tough times, whether it was helping with rides to extracurricular activities or offering emotional support when things felt overwhelming. That experience sparked a desire in me to give back in the future and to make sure that others, especially those in single-parent families, know they are not alone in their struggles.
As I continue my educational journey at Emmanuel College, I am committed to pursuing a career in nursing. I want to help others, especially those who have faced similar challenges to mine, and offer support in the most impactful way possible. I believe that my background as a child of a single parent has given me the empathy, compassion, and resilience necessary to make a difference in the healthcare field.
Beyond my career, I plan to continue serving my community through volunteer work and activism. I have already experienced the power of a strong, supportive community, and I want to be a part of that for others. Whether it’s offering my time at local food banks, working with single-parent families, or helping young people from similar backgrounds understand that they can succeed, I am dedicated to giving back.
My journey has been shaped by the sacrifices and hard work of my mom, and I am driven to honor her by helping others overcome the obstacles that come with being part of a single-parent household. The challenges I’ve faced have only strengthened my resolve to succeed and to make a positive impact in the world.

Understanding the Underlying Meaning in Ancient Philosophy
Passage from Plato’s The Republic, Book VII:
"The truth would be that the prisoner, who had been accustomed to the shadows, would feel pain and resentment if he were dragged up to the light. But once he was there, he would come to realize that the reality of the world around him is far greater than the illusions of the cave."
Short Essay:
In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, a profound philosophical insight into the nature of knowledge, reality, and human perception is presented. Through this allegory, Plato explores the process of enlightenment and the discomfort that often accompanies the acquisition of true knowledge. The passage I selected from The Republic is emblematic of this journey and provides a rich understanding of Plato's views on the nature of human understanding.
The allegory itself presents a group of prisoners who have been chained inside a dark cave for their entire lives, facing a wall where they see nothing but shadows cast by objects behind them. These shadows represent their perception of reality—distorted, incomplete, and shaped by external forces beyond their comprehension. The prisoners are unaware that their limited understanding is just a pale reflection of the full truth that lies beyond their immediate view. For them, the shadows are all they know, and they accept them as reality.
In the passage, Plato describes the transformative moment when a prisoner is freed and brought into the light of the outside world. At first, the freed prisoner experiences intense discomfort, disorientation, and even resentment. The light is painful to his eyes, and the transition from the darkness of the cave to the overwhelming brightness of the sun is jarring. His initial reaction reflects a natural human response to the unknown: fear and resistance. The comfort of the familiar is a powerful force, and the unknown can often be perceived as threatening.
This resistance to new knowledge, however, is not permanent. As the freed prisoner’s eyes gradually adjust to the light, he begins to see and understand the true nature of the world around him. What was once perceived as painful and difficult becomes clearer and more beautiful. The prisoner now realizes that the shadows in the cave were mere illusions, and the light of the outside world reveals a vastly more complex and intricate reality. Plato uses this moment to symbolize the intellectual and spiritual awakening that comes with acquiring true knowledge. The journey from darkness to light is a metaphor for the philosopher’s pursuit of wisdom.
This passage highlights an essential theme in Plato’s philosophy: knowledge is not merely an accumulation of facts, but a transformation of perception. The allegory emphasizes the idea that learning is not a passive process but an active, sometimes painful, reconfiguration of one’s worldview. The discomfort the freed prisoner feels is a necessary part of the process. It represents the struggle against ignorance and the old ways of thinking, which often must be relinquished to make space for new ideas.
Moreover, the allegory addresses the responsibility that comes with enlightenment. Once the prisoner understands the truth of the world, he has an obligation to return to the cave and share this newfound knowledge with others. However, this is another difficult challenge. The prisoners in the cave are still chained to their limited perception, and they are likely to reject the freed prisoner’s claims about the outside world. They might ridicule him, dismiss him, or even be hostile toward him. Yet, Plato suggests that the enlightened individual must persevere, for the truth is a gift worth sharing. The allegory, in this sense, is not just about personal enlightenment, but about the ethical duty to help others see the light of truth as well.
From a close reading of this passage, we understand that the journey of intellectual growth is not easy, but it is deeply rewarding. The philosopher’s task is to question, to seek beyond appearances, and to uncover the underlying truths of existence. Plato argues that this journey is essential not only for personal growth but also for the betterment of society. Knowledge is not just power; it is a means of contributing to the well-being of others. The true philosopher, Plato contends, is one who uses their wisdom to guide others out of the darkness and into the light.
This passage also resonates with the contemporary challenge of education and intellectual engagement. In today’s world, we are often faced with information that may not be truthful or may be presented in ways that are designed to reinforce existing biases. The allegory reminds us of the importance of critical thinking and the need to question the surface-level information we are presented with. It encourages us to seek deeper understanding and to recognize that knowledge is not always comfortable, but it is necessary for personal and societal growth.
Ultimately, the meaning behind this passage is clear: intellectual growth requires a willingness to face discomfort, to question the status quo, and to be brave in the pursuit of truth. As we continue our educational journeys, we must remember that the process of learning is not just about acquiring information—it is about transforming our perceptions and using that transformation to make a positive impact on the world.

The Power of Reading and the Path to Nursing
Ever since I was a child, reading has been a way for me to explore new worlds and develop a deep understanding of the world around me. One of the most influential experiences that shaped my decision to pursue a career in nursing was reading books about healthcare professionals and their impact on people’s lives.
As a young boy, I was introduced to stories of doctors and nurses who went beyond just treating patients—they connected with them on a human level, offering care, compassion, and support. These stories sparked my interest in healthcare, but what truly solidified my decision to pursue nursing was the day my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was 17, and this experience opened my eyes to the reality of medical care from the patient’s perspective.
During her treatment, I spent a lot of time at the hospital, where I observed how the nurses played a crucial role in not only administering treatment but in offering emotional support and comfort. I remember one nurse who always took the time to talk to my mom, listen to her concerns, and make her feel at ease, even on the toughest days. That nurse's ability to balance technical skills with genuine compassion left a lasting impression on me. It became clear to me that nursing wasn’t just about medical knowledge—it was about being there for people in their most vulnerable moments.
Through the years, my passion for reading helped me understand the complexities of healthcare, from the science behind it to the human side. As I began to read more about nursing, I realized that it was a field where I could make a tangible difference in people’s lives, just like those nurses who helped my mom through her cancer treatment. This understanding has fueled my desire to pursue a nursing degree and dedicate my life to caring for others in the same way I saw those nurses care for my mom.
Reading has opened doors for me, not only by expanding my knowledge but by providing the inspiration I needed to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse.
Overcoming Adversity - Jack Terry Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Jack Terry's story is one of extraordinary perseverance. From losing his entire family in the Holocaust to becoming a respected psychoanalyst, his life embodies the strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable hardship. His journey, beginning with a survival story marked by loss and struggle, is a reminder that no matter how dire the circumstances, there is always the possibility for growth, achievement, and the ability to make a difference.
I draw inspiration from Dr. Terry's life because, like him, I have faced obstacles that at times felt insurmountable. When I was 17, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. As a young person, I could not fully grasp the impact it would have on her or our family, but I quickly learned how illness could change everything. My mother, a single parent, had to take time off work to deal with her treatment, and the weight of medical bills started to add up. Watching her fight for her health while balancing the struggles of being a single mom shaped my understanding of resilience. Like Dr. Terry, she refused to be defeated by her circumstances. Her determination to keep going, even when things seemed bleak, gave me the strength to push forward in my own life.
During this time, I also began to take on more responsibility, especially as the captain of my high school lacrosse team. I learned the importance of leadership, empathy, and resilience. The strength I saw in my mother mirrored the lessons I was learning on the field—no matter how tough life gets, it's about keeping your head up and moving forward.
In Dr. Terry’s life, I see the same themes of perseverance, a relentless drive to improve, and a deep desire to give back to society. His ability to overcome adversity and find ways to help others, despite having faced such unimaginable trauma, serves as a beacon of hope for anyone facing challenges. It has inspired me to continue my education and pursue a career in nursing. I want to be someone who, like Dr. Terry, can offer compassion, care, and understanding to those who are struggling. I believe that the healthcare field is where I can make the most meaningful impact, just as Dr. Terry used his life to help others.
Dr. Terry’s legacy shows me that education is not just about personal success—it’s about using that knowledge to serve the community and make a positive impact. I am committed to pursuing a career where I can help others heal and find hope in their darkest moments. Whether it’s offering medical care, lending a compassionate ear, or simply providing encouragement, I hope to follow in the footsteps of those who have come before me and give back to society in a way that is meaningful and impactful.

Fighting Through the Dark: My Journey to Pursue My Dreams
Growing up, I always knew there was something different about my inner world. While I had a strong support system and a family who cared deeply for me, I struggled with feelings of isolation and sadness that never seemed to lift. Anxiety and depression have been shadows in my life for as long as I can remember. It wasn’t easy, and for a long time, I didn’t know how to talk about it.
There were days when getting out of bed felt like climbing a mountain. I would look at my peers and wonder why they seemed so effortlessly happy while I felt stuck in my own mind, wrestling with thoughts I didn’t know how to process. I’ve spent years navigating mental health, trying to find a path forward, often feeling like I was walking alone. But through every challenge, I found the strength to keep moving forward. Like my brother, Michael, I made it my mission to not let depression define me, even when I couldn’t always control it.
At my lowest points, I faced the temptation to numb the pain. Drugs, alcohol, and unhealthy coping mechanisms were around me, and I could see how easy it would be to fall into those traps. But I also knew that those choices would only deepen my struggles. Instead, I leaned into other forms of support—therapy, close friends, and being open with my family about my feelings. I also found solace in physical activities like lacrosse and snowboarding. Engaging in these outlets became an anchor for me, reminding me that I had the power to reclaim my life.
My experiences with mental health have deeply shaped who I am and have played a major role in my decision to pursue a nursing degree. I want to be someone who can guide others through their struggles, just as I have been guided. Mental health is a critical part of well-being, and my goal is to help others feel heard, supported, and understood, whether they are going through depression or any other challenge. The stigma surrounding mental health in men, especially, has always been a barrier that I wish to break. There is strength in vulnerability, and I want to help others see that it’s okay to not be okay sometimes.
Overcoming my mental health struggles has been one of the hardest battles of my life, but it’s also been one of the most rewarding. Every step I’ve taken has been an act of perseverance and growth. And now, I’m ready to use those lessons to help others in a career that allows me to not only support patients physically but emotionally, as well.
As I work toward my dream of becoming a nurse, this scholarship would help me further my education and give me the tools I need to make a difference in the lives of others. Michael’s legacy of kindness, compassion, and strength has inspired me, and I hope to carry that forward by providing support to those who need it most. This scholarship would be more than financial assistance—it would be a reminder that my fight to pursue my passions is just beginning.
I know that through perseverance and dedication, I can overcome anything. And through education, I can build a future that helps others, just as my family, friends, and mentors have helped me.

A Journey of Service and Compassion
Growing up, I’ve always been drawn to helping others. Whether it was offering a helping hand to a friend or stepping up to assist my mom, who faced the hardships of being a single parent while battling breast cancer, I found purpose in serving those around me. As I navigate my journey through high school and look ahead to college, one thing has become clear: I am meant to pursue a career in healthcare.
My desire to enter the healthcare field stems from both personal experiences and a deep-rooted belief that every individual deserves access to the care and support they need to thrive. When I was 17, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Watching her fight that battle while balancing the stress of financial strain and the weight of medical bills left an indelible mark on me. It was through this time that I witnessed firsthand the importance of compassionate healthcare. I saw how vital it was for medical professionals to not only treat my mother’s physical condition but to offer emotional support and understanding. Those nurses, doctors, and specialists were more than just providers of care—they were the steady hands that gave our family hope.
This experience fueled my decision to pursue nursing. But I also want to do more than just care for individuals; I want to advocate for communities that, like my own, often don’t have access to the resources or support systems they need. As a Native American/White individual, I’ve seen how healthcare disparities affect marginalized communities, particularly those in rural areas like where I live. Many people in these communities don’t have access to healthcare, education, or social services, and often feel ignored by the system. By becoming a nurse, I hope to be a bridge of support, ensuring that everyone—regardless of their background—receives quality care.
Beyond healthcare, I believe that education is a powerful tool for change. It’s essential that we empower future generations with the knowledge and resources to take control of their health, well-being, and futures. I hope to combine my love for nursing with a broader commitment to community education and advocacy. My goal is to work not only with individual patients but also to educate entire communities about preventative healthcare and the importance of mental health, nutrition, and wellness.
I know that to achieve these goals, I will need to commit to my education, learn from mentors, and work tirelessly toward becoming a healthcare professional who gives back. This scholarship would be an incredible step toward achieving those dreams and serving others in ways that honor my mother’s strength and resilience.
I am deeply committed to following in the footsteps of those who have made a difference through service—just like Robert F. Lawson, whose life and dedication to helping others inspire me. With this scholarship, I will continue to pursue my passion for healthcare, fueled by the belief that through service, compassion, and education, we can build stronger, healthier communities for everyone.

Bridging Health, Culture, and Justice
Growing up in a Native American and White household, food has always been more than just sustenance—it’s been a connection to my heritage, my family, and my community. Whether it was fresh fish cooked over an open flame at our seasonal campsite or traditional dishes passed down through generations, meals were a way to bond and preserve culture. Yet, as I’ve grown older and explored different perspectives on health, sustainability, and justice, I’ve come to see how food choices—both my own and those of society—reflect deeper issues in the world.
I am not vegan, but I have learned about the movement’s goals, from reducing environmental harm to promoting ethical treatment of animals. While I respect the choices of those who follow this lifestyle, my personal passion lies in another area of social justice: healthcare access and equity. As someone who has watched my single mother battle breast cancer while struggling with the financial weight of treatment, I’ve seen firsthand how healthcare is not an equal playing field. Food plays a role in this too—many low-income communities, especially Indigenous and Black populations, lack access to fresh, healthy food, contributing to preventable diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
This disparity—where the ability to eat healthily and seek proper medical care depends on wealth—has shaped my ambition to become a nurse. I want to bridge the gap between healthcare providers and underrepresented communities, ensuring that every patient, no matter their background, receives the care they deserve. A person’s health should never be dictated by their financial status or zip code.
While I may not personally follow a vegan diet, I do believe in compassionate and conscious decision-making when it comes to food. I’ve made small, intentional shifts—cutting back on processed foods, being mindful of where my meals come from, and supporting sustainable and ethical farming practices when possible. I believe change doesn’t always happen in extremes; sometimes, it’s about progress over perfection.
At my core, I believe in healing—not just in a medical sense, but in a way that extends to communities, traditions, and the way we care for one another. Whether through food, healthcare, or advocacy, I want to make a difference in the lives of others, just as those who cared for my mother made a difference in ours.
This scholarship would allow me to continue my journey toward becoming a nurse, ensuring that I can help those who need it most. Because at the end of the day, whether it’s through food, medicine, or activism, healing should be for everyone.

The Great Spaghetti Incident
There are moments in life when you realize that you are, in fact, not the hero of your own story. For me, that moment came at the expense of my dignity, my dinner, and my mother’s favorite tablecloth.
It all started with a simple idea: impress my family by cooking dinner. Now, I should mention that my cooking skills up until this point had been limited to pouring milk into cereal and burning toast. But that night, I was feeling ambitious. I was going to make spaghetti—a classic, foolproof dish. Or so I thought.
The noodles went into the pot. The sauce simmered on the stove. I was in my element, flipping spatulas and tossing in spices like I was a contestant on Top Chef. My confidence was at an all-time high. That’s when disaster struck.
I decided, in a burst of showmanship, to test if the spaghetti was ready by throwing a strand at the wall. I had read somewhere that if it stuck, it meant the pasta was done. Unfortunately, I failed to consider two things:
The spaghetti was still scalding hot.
The wall was directly behind me.
With all the grace of a professional frisbee player, I flung the noodle into the air. But instead of making its way to the wall, it performed a perfect back flip—straight onto my forehead. I shrieked. I flailed. I knocked over the sauce. In a matter of seconds, my kitchen had transformed into a crime scene, with marinara splattered across the counters, the floor, and, most tragically, my mother’s pristine white tablecloth.
When my family entered the kitchen, they found me standing in the middle of the chaos, a lone spaghetti noodle still clinging to my forehead like a badge of shame. My mom gasped. My brother howled with laughter. And me? I accepted my fate.
To this day, my family refers to this tragic event as The Great Spaghetti Incident. I, however, prefer to think of it as a valuable life lesson: never throw food unless you’re absolutely sure where it’s going to land.
And maybe, just maybe, I should stick to cereal.
Norman C. Nelson IV Memorial Scholarship
Since childhood, I have been drawn to the medical field, fascinated by the intricate ways the human body functions and how healthcare professionals can make a profound impact on people’s lives. My passion for nursing has only grown stronger over the years, fueled by hands-on experiences, my love for science, and my desire to serve others in their times of need. Now, as I prepare to enter college, I am committed to pursuing a career in nursing, a profession where I can combine my love for biology, chemistry, and anatomy with my drive to help others.
One of my biggest inspirations is my mother. She has always been a source of strength and resilience, but this past year, she faced her toughest challenge yet—being diagnosed with breast cancer. As a single mother, she has worked tirelessly to support my twin brother and me, and her diagnosis meant taking time off work, facing overwhelming medical bills, and enduring grueling treatments. Watching her battle cancer has been both heartbreaking and eye-opening. It has given me a firsthand look at the importance of compassionate, skilled healthcare providers and solidified my decision to become a nurse. I want to be the kind of nurse who not only treats patients’ physical ailments but also provides the emotional support and reassurance they need during their most vulnerable moments.
Beyond my personal experiences, my academic journey has reinforced my passion for medicine. I thrive in hands-on learning environments, and I find immense satisfaction in problem-solving and applying scientific concepts to real-life situations. In addition to excelling in my coursework, I have also balanced my studies with my dedication to sports. As a lacrosse player and team captain, I have learned valuable lessons in leadership, discipline, and perseverance—qualities that will serve me well in the fast-paced and demanding field of nursing.
Financially, pursuing a nursing degree is a significant challenge. With my mother’s medical expenses and our household relying on a single income, affording college tuition is daunting. However, I refuse to let financial barriers stand in the way of my dream. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus on my education without the constant stress of how to pay for it, enabling me to dedicate myself fully to becoming the best nurse I can be.
In the future, I hope to specialize as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), a field that combines my love for precision, critical thinking, and patient care. I aim to make a meaningful impact in the healthcare system, ensuring that patients receive the highest level of care during surgical procedures. Whether comforting a nervous patient before anesthesia or making split-second decisions in the operating room, I know that this path will allow me to use my skills to make a real difference.
Ultimately, my journey into the medical field is deeply personal. My experiences have shaped me into a compassionate, driven, and resilient individual who is ready to take on the challenges of nursing. With the support of this scholarship, I will be one step closer to achieving my goal of becoming a nurse and, eventually, a CRNA. My mission is to provide exceptional care, just as the nurses who have supported my mother have done for her. Through my career, I hope to honor those who have inspired me and to serve as a source of strength and healing for others.

Shaped by Sports: Leadership, Resilience, and Impact
Lacrosse has been a defining part of my life, shaping me into the person I am today. Through the sport, I have learned discipline, resilience, and the importance of teamwork—lessons that extend far beyond the field. As I prepare to continue my athletic and academic journey at Emmanuel College, I reflect on how my experiences in lacrosse have not only influenced my personal growth but also positioned me to make a meaningful impact on others.
My athletic journey has been filled with challenges, but each obstacle has strengthened my resolve. Balancing academics with the demands of being a student-athlete has tested my time management and perseverance. However, the most significant challenge I have faced has been outside of sports—my mother’s recent breast cancer diagnosis. As a single mother, she has always been my biggest supporter, and watching her battle this disease has pushed me to be even stronger. Despite the emotional and financial strain on our family, I have remained committed to excelling in school and sports, using lacrosse as both an outlet and a source of motivation.
Stepping into a leadership role on my team has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my athletic journey. Last season, I was a captain in training, and this year, I will officially serve as team captain. Leading my teammates has taught me how to uplift and support others, reinforcing the values of mentorship and accountability. Whether it’s guiding younger players through drills, motivating my team during tough games, or setting the example through hard work and dedication, I take pride in being a leader both on and off the field.
Beyond my own personal growth, I want to use my athletic journey to inspire others. I understand the power of sports in shaping confidence, discipline, and perseverance. As a future nurse, I hope to combine my passion for healthcare with my love for athletics by working with injured athletes, helping them recover and return to the sports they love. I also hope to mentor young athletes, especially those facing personal hardships, to show them that challenges do not have to define them—they can be overcome.
Lacrosse has given me more than just a competitive edge; it has given me a purpose. It has taught me that leadership is about lifting others up, that perseverance is built through adversity, and that success is not just measured by wins but by the impact we leave on those around us. I am eager to take the lessons I have learned and continue making a difference—on the field, in my future career, and in my community.

Strength Through Adversity: My Journey to Becoming a Nurse
Storytelling is deeply rooted in Native American tradition, passing down wisdom, resilience, and identity from one generation to the next. My story is one of perseverance, shaped by the challenges my family has faced and the strength I have gained through those experiences. As a part Native American individual, I have grown up understanding the importance of community, family, and resilience—values that have driven me toward my goal of becoming a nurse.
One of the defining moments of my life was when my father left our family when I was nine years old. His absence created a void, both emotionally and financially, leaving my mother to raise my twin brother and me on her own. Despite the hardships, my mother has always been a source of strength. She worked tirelessly to provide for us, never allowing our struggles to define our future. Her resilience became my foundation, teaching me that adversity is not an excuse to give up but rather an opportunity to rise above.
That lesson became even more important this past year when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. The news was devastating, and our lives changed overnight. As a single mother, she had to take time off work for treatments, adding financial strain on top of the emotional weight we were already carrying. Watching her fight through pain and uncertainty was heartbreaking, but it also reinforced my belief in the power of care, compassion, and perseverance.
Throughout this difficult time, I found myself stepping up in ways I never had before. I took on more responsibilities at home, supported my mother through her treatments, and continued excelling in both academics and athletics. As a lacrosse player, I learned the importance of discipline, teamwork, and pushing through challenges—lessons that carried over into my personal life. My mother’s battle with cancer solidified my desire to pursue nursing, specifically becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). I want to be the person who provides care and comfort to those going through some of the most challenging moments of their lives, just as my mother’s medical team has done for her.
Being Native American means carrying the strength and resilience of my ancestors. It means understanding the struggles my people have faced and using that knowledge to push forward, to break barriers, and to create a better future. My ambition is not just to succeed for myself but to give back to my community and be a role model for other Native American students who may feel the weight of underrepresentation and adversity. I want to prove that no matter where you come from or what obstacles stand in your way, success is possible with determination and perseverance.
This scholarship represents more than just financial support—it is an investment in my future and in the impact I hope to make as a Native American nurse. I plan to use my education to not only provide medical care but also to advocate for better healthcare access in underserved communities, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, receives the compassionate care they deserve.
My story is one of resilience, shaped by the challenges I have faced and the strength I have gained along the way. I carry with me the lessons of my ancestors, the unwavering support of my mother, and the determination to make a difference. With this scholarship, I will take one step closer to fulfilling my dream of becoming a nurse, using my experiences to inspire and uplift those around me.

The Challenges and Lessons of Being a Student-Athlete
Playing lacrosse throughout high school has been one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences of my life. As a student-athlete, I have learned the value of discipline, resilience, and time management, but I have also faced adversity that has tested my dedication to both my sport and my future career. Balancing academics, athletics, and personal challenges has shaped me into the person I am today, preparing me for the demands of nursing and life beyond the field.
One of the biggest challenges I have faced as a student-athlete is managing my time effectively. With intense practices, games, and travel, finding time to complete assignments, study for exams, and maintain a high GPA has required immense dedication. There were nights when I would come home from a tough practice, physically exhausted, yet still had to push through hours of studying. Despite the difficulty, I refused to let my grades slip because I knew that my education would pave the way for my future career as a nurse. This experience has taught me the importance of prioritization and self-discipline—skills that will serve me well in the fast-paced world of healthcare.
Beyond the academic pressures, I have also faced personal adversity. My mother, a single parent, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Watching her go through this battle while trying to support my twin brother and me has been incredibly difficult. There were times when I felt overwhelmed, unsure if I could balance the weight of school, sports, and my family’s struggles. However, instead of letting these hardships break me, they have fueled my motivation. Seeing my mom’s strength has inspired me to push through every challenge, both on and off the field. Her fight has reinforced my desire to become a nurse, where I can help others facing their own battles.
Lacrosse has also taught me the importance of teamwork and leadership. Unlike individual sports, lacrosse requires trust, communication, and accountability. I have learned that success isn’t just about personal skill—it’s about how well you work with those around you. As a leader on my team, I have taken on the responsibility of motivating my teammates, setting an example through my work ethic, and staying positive even when facing defeat. These lessons in teamwork will be essential in nursing, where collaboration with colleagues can mean the difference between life and death.
Perhaps the most important lesson I have learned through sports is perseverance. There have been moments of doubt—injuries that took me off the field, tough losses that made me question my abilities, and personal struggles that made everything feel overwhelming. But each time, I found a way to push forward. Lacrosse has taught me that setbacks are not the end; they are simply obstacles that test how badly you want to succeed. This mindset will carry over into my career in nursing, where resilience and determination are essential in providing the best care for patients.
Being a student-athlete has shaped me in ways I never expected. It has taught me time management, perseverance, leadership, and the ability to overcome adversity. These lessons will not only help me in my future as a nurse but also in life as a whole. Sports have shown me that challenges are not roadblocks—they are opportunities for growth. No matter how tough things get, I will always face them head-on, just as I have on the field.

A Lifetime of Adventure: How the Outdoors Shaped Me
Since before I can remember, the outdoors has been a central part of my life. Every summer, my family and I pack up and head to Danforth Bay, a place that has become more than just a campground—it’s a second home. I have spent my summers there, riding my bike through winding trails, tubing on the lake until sunset, and taking in the beauty of nature. The freedom and adventure the outdoors has provided me have shaped who I am today, fueling my passion for exploration, resilience, and ultimately, my decision to become a nurse.
One of my most memorable outdoor experiences took place at Danforth Bay when I was ten. That summer, my twin brother and I set out on a mission: to explore every hidden trail of the campground. We woke up early each morning, riding until our legs burned, finding new paths and making memories. One afternoon, we ventured deeper into the woods, where the terrain became rougher. Suddenly, my brother’s bike hit a hidden root, sending him flying over the handlebars. His knee was badly scraped and bleeding.
At that moment, something clicked inside me. Instead of panicking, I immediately took action. I rinsed his wound with my water bottle and used my shirt as a bandage. Then, I helped him onto my bike, walking beside him as we made our way back to camp. That experience was one of the first times I felt a deep sense of purpose—a realization that I thrived in situations where I could help others. Looking back, I see this as one of the sparks that led me toward nursing.
Beyond Danforth Bay, my love for the outdoors extends into the winter months, as I have been snowboarding since I was able to walk. My mom, who shares my passion for adventure, has always encouraged me to push myself on the slopes. Over the years, I have gone from simply gliding down hills to challenging myself with rails, jumps, and more technical terrain. Snowboarding has taught me discipline, perseverance, and the importance of calculated risk-taking—lessons that apply beyond the mountains. Just like in nursing, snowboarding requires precision, quick thinking, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
The outdoors has shaped my perspective on life. Spending time outside has given me an appreciation for nature’s healing power, something I hope to incorporate into my career as a nurse. I believe healing is not just about medicine—it’s about the environment, mindset, and care that a patient receives. Whether it's helping an injured athlete recover or advocating for outdoor therapy programs, I want to combine my passion for healthcare with my love for nature, ensuring others can experience the same peace and resilience it has given me.
This scholarship represents more than financial support—it represents an opportunity to honor someone who, like me, found healing and inspiration in nature. Through my nursing career, I hope to embody that same spirit, using my knowledge and compassion to make a difference in others' lives. Just as the outdoors has shaped me into the person I am today, I hope to help others find strength, healing, and adventure in their own journeys.

Passion for Nursing and the Impact I Hope to Make
From a young age, I’ve had a deep fascination with biology, anatomy, and chemistry. But it wasn’t just the science that drew me in—it was the people. Watching my mother battle breast cancer has shown me the importance of compassionate care during times of illness. It has also solidified my passion for nursing, as I realized that nurses don’t just treat patients—they become a source of comfort, a lifeline for those in pain or distress. I am passionate about nursing because it allows me to combine my love for science with my desire to help others, and it provides an opportunity to be a guiding presence in patients’ lives during some of their most vulnerable moments.
Nursing, to me, is more than just a career; it is a commitment to ensuring people’s well-being in every sense. Nurses are often the first people patients turn to, and they are the ones who provide care that is not only clinical but also compassionate. I have always been drawn to roles where I can connect with others on a personal level while applying my skills and knowledge. In nursing, I see a unique opportunity to make a tangible difference in patients' lives by being both a healer and a support system.
When I think about my future in nursing, I am especially drawn to anesthesia nursing—becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). My interest in this specialty grew over time as I learned about the important role CRNAs play in ensuring patients’ safety and comfort during surgical procedures. During my mother's cancer treatments, I saw firsthand how anesthesia providers manage not only the technical aspects of anesthesia but also the emotional side, reassuring patients and their families. This combination of technical expertise and personal care is what drew me to the field. I am excited about the opportunity to provide safe anesthesia care while building relationships with patients and making their experiences as comfortable and positive as possible.
Through my work as a CRNA, I hope to make a significant impact in the operating room by ensuring that patients undergo surgery with the highest standards of care, comfort, and safety. My goal is to provide not just medical expertise, but also emotional support, helping patients navigate the fear and uncertainty that often accompanies surgery. I also hope to be an advocate for patients, ensuring that they understand their options and feel empowered in their healthcare decisions.
Beyond technical expertise, I want to contribute to the future of anesthesia nursing by mentoring young nurses, educating them on best practices, and helping them develop their skills. I envision working in a hospital or surgical center that values the holistic role of nurses, where the quality of care extends beyond the procedures we perform to include the emotional and mental well-being of the patients we serve. I also hope to use my experience and knowledge to support underserved communities, providing access to high-quality anesthesia care in environments that might otherwise lack sufficient resources.
Nursing is not just about providing medical care—it’s about making a lasting, positive impact on patients' lives. As a nurse, I hope to bring a unique combination of skills, compassion, and expertise to everything I do. By becoming a CRNA, I believe I can help patients not only survive but thrive after their surgeries, leaving a lasting imprint on their recovery journey. Through my passion for nursing, I aim to help shape a more compassionate, well-rounded healthcare experience for every patient I encounter.

From Childhood Dreams to CRNA Aspirations
As a child, I dreamed of becoming a doctor. I was fascinated by the idea of helping people heal, and I admired the dedication of healthcare professionals. However, as I grew older and gained a deeper understanding of the medical field, my career goals evolved. I realized that my true passion lay in nursing—specifically, in becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
My love for hands-on work, biology, chemistry, and anatomy has always guided me toward the medical field, but I initially believed that becoming a doctor was the only way to make a meaningful impact. That changed as I learned more about nursing and saw the crucial role nurses play in patient care. Nurses are on the front lines, providing direct support and compassion to patients while applying advanced medical knowledge. CRNAs, in particular, stand out to me because they combine technical expertise with patient-centered care, ensuring that patients receive anesthesia safely while also being a source of comfort and reassurance during some of the most stressful moments of their lives.
A major turning point in my career path came when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a devastating moment for my family, but it also gave me a new perspective on the medical field. I spent countless hours in hospitals and clinics, watching nurses and other healthcare professionals care for my mother. Among them, the anesthesia providers stood out. Whether it was for biopsies, surgeries, or other treatments, CRNAs played a vital role in managing her pain and keeping her stable. They were not just providers—they were advocates, ensuring that my mother was as comfortable and informed as possible throughout her treatments. Seeing their impact firsthand solidified my decision to become a CRNA.
Now, as I prepare to attend Emmanuel College to pursue my nursing degree, my ultimate goal remains clear: to become a CRNA and work in surgical and trauma settings. I want to be a part of a team that ensures patients receive safe and effective anesthesia care while also advocating for their well-being. Beyond that, I hope to use my position to mentor future nurses and educate my community on the importance of healthcare access and safety.
Choosing nursing over my childhood dream of becoming a doctor was not a step down—it was a step toward what truly aligns with my passions and skills. I want to be in the operating room, monitoring patients and ensuring their safety, but I also want to build relationships with them, providing the compassionate care that only a nurse can offer.
While I am eager to begin my journey, I know that the road to becoming a CRNA is long and challenging. It requires years of education, clinical experience, and financial investment. As the son of a single mother who is currently battling breast cancer, I am acutely aware of the financial burdens associated with higher education. This scholarship would not only ease some of those burdens but also allow me to focus on my studies and clinical training without the added stress of financial strain.
Although my childhood dream has evolved, my core ambition remains the same—I want to make a difference in people’s lives through healthcare. Nursing, and ultimately becoming a CRNA, is the perfect way for me to achieve that goal. With this scholarship’s support, I can take the next steps toward that future, gaining the education and experience needed to become a leader in my field.

Compassion, Commitment, and Community: My Path to Nursing
From a young age, I have been drawn to the medical field, fascinated by how the human body works and how healthcare professionals can change lives. However, my desire to become a nurse is about more than just science—it is about compassion, resilience, and service. Growing up, I watched my single mother work tirelessly to provide for my twin brother and me. Recently, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and seeing her battle this disease firsthand has deepened my commitment to nursing. The nurses who care for her are more than medical professionals; they are sources of comfort, strength, and hope. I aspire to be that person for others in their most vulnerable moments.
Nursing is not just a career for me—it is a calling. I love hands-on work, biology, chemistry, and anatomy, but what excites me most is the opportunity to make a direct impact on people’s lives. Whether it is easing a patient’s pain, supporting families through difficult diagnoses, or advocating for better healthcare in my community, I want to be on the front lines, making a difference. I plan to specialize in oncology nursing, inspired by my mother’s journey, to provide compassionate care to those battling cancer.
Beyond the hospital, I want to use my nursing skills to support my local community. As a student-athlete, I understand the importance of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance—qualities that will serve me well in nursing. I hope to organize health education workshops in undeserved areas, volunteer at community clinics, and mentor aspiring nurses. Healthcare should be accessible to all, and I want to play a role in making that a reality.
Attending Emmanuel College’s nursing program is the next step in my journey, but financial obstacles stand in my way. As my mother takes time off work for treatment, medical bills and tuition costs weigh heavily on my family. This scholarship would not only alleviate some of that burden but also allow me to fully dedicate myself to my studies and clinical training. With your support, I can pursue my passion for nursing, honor my mother’s strength, and give back to the community that has shaped me.
Nursing is more than a profession—it is a lifelong commitment to caring for others. I am ready to embrace that challenge, fueled by my ambition, drive, and desire to make an impact. Thank you for considering my application.

Being a student-athlete has been one of the most defining aspects of my life, shaping not only my character but also my career aspirations and the way I approach challenges. Growing up, sports were more than just activities; they were a way of life. I fell in love with lacrosse when I was just a kid, and it quickly became my passion. Over the past 11 years, lacrosse has taught me about dedication, perseverance, and teamwork. It has been a journey of constant growth, one that has shaped me into the person I am today.
In addition to lacrosse, I have spent 12 years playing soccer, which further reinforced the values of discipline and hard work. Soccer provided a different kind of challenge, one that required endurance and strategic thinking. However, my senior year marked a pivotal shift when I decided to try football. Making the switch was intimidating at first, but I quickly found myself drawn to the physicality of the sport. Football pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me a newfound appreciation for adaptability. The lessons I learned on the football field—resilience, focus, and the ability to handle pressure—have been invaluable as I prepare for my final lacrosse season.
Playing sports year-round has always kept me busy, but it has also taught me the importance of time management. Balancing schoolwork with practices, games, and training sessions was no small feat, yet it prepared me for the challenges that lie ahead. This discipline will be especially critical as I transition into college, where I will play lacrosse and pursue a degree in nursing. The dual commitment to athletics and academics may seem daunting, but I’ve never shied away from a challenge. In fact, the structure and routine I’ve developed as a student-athlete will be my greatest asset as I navigate this new chapter.
Nursing is not just a career choice for me; it’s a calling. My ultimate goal is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). To achieve this, I plan to work in a busy ICU in Boston after graduation. I’ve always been drawn to high-pressure environments where quick thinking and teamwork are essential, and my experiences on the field have prepared me for that intensity. Working in an ICU will not only help me gain valuable experience but also make my application stand out when I begin applying to CRNA programs. This dream drives me every day, and I’m committed to making it a reality.
Outside of sports and academics, I enjoy staying active and exploring new challenges. Whether it’s trying a new sport during the off-season or simply finding ways to stay in shape, I’ve always believed in pushing myself to grow. These interests keep me grounded and remind me of the importance of balance in life.
Looking back, being a student-athlete has been more than just a role; it’s been a way of life that has shaped my identity and future goals. The skills I’ve developed—time management, resilience, adaptability, and teamwork—will serve me well as I pursue my dream of becoming a CRNA. As I step into this next phase, I’m excited to carry the lessons I’ve learned on the field and apply them to the challenges ahead. For me, it’s about more than just playing the game; it’s about embracing the journey and striving for excellence in everything I do.
