Personally becoming an optician was never apart of my future plans. I always thought that I would become a teacher of some sort whether it was a music teacher or a general education teacher for an elementary school. After the covid pandemic returning to work was turning into a chore and not something I looked forward to. So I decided to get a new job as an optical associate at Americas Best Contacts and Eyeglasses. Within the first month of my employment I was so interested as to the science behind what opticians did that I decided to change my major in college and go towards getting an associate in science in opticianry.
The more time that past the more I enjoyed the work I did, it made me start to wonder how can I make an impact on the people I met with the skills I learned. When it comes to picking out a good pair of glasses, there is more to it then just picking out a pair of frames. Patients from other stores would come in angry either they couldn't see out of their glasses, they were making them dizzy, or they continuously kept falling of their face. I want to impact my patients lives by making a visit to the eye doctor an enjoyable one, where they can't wait to come in to pick out new glasses, an have that anticipation of waiting for them to come in so they can see the world in a whole new light.
There is just something about the feeling you get when you know the patient is happy and you did something to make their likes just a little bit better. Personally I have had a patient where during their previous experience the person who helped her didn't take the extra step to explain to her that the frames she chose were too small for her face. So within a week after picking them up she would need an adjustment to help move the temples back in, this would continue happening over the next couple of months until the frame eventually just snapped. After the experience this patient had I made sure to go above and beyond to make sure everything from start to finish was perfect. We made sure to pick frames that fit her properly and made sure all measurements for the lens we're done correct. The day she came in to pick them up the look on her face when she finally got to put them on, she was smiling from ear to ear, and couldn't stop expressing her appreciation for what I had done.
It's time like these where I know I am doing something right. I want to make sure that every patient that I help always leaves better then when they came in.
