Growing up as a woman of color in a low-income community in Los Angeles, I witnessed the profound impact of the legal system on my family and neighbors. The justice system wasn't just a distant institution—it was a constant presence, shaping lives, futures, and opportunities in ways that often felt harsh and unforgiving. My earliest memories of it are filled with fear and confusion as I watched family members navigate a system that seemed designed to punish rather than understand. It would have been easy to grow up resentful of the legal system. After all, I saw firsthand how arrests, court dates, and sentencing fractured families and left many feeling hopeless. Yet, within these moments of despair, I also noticed something extraordinary: advocates who fought tirelessly for those who couldn’t fight for themselves. Public defenders, community organizers, and mentors stood up for my family and others, reminding us we were seen, heard, and worthy of justice. These individuals were beacons of hope in a system that often feels devoid. Their compassion and commitment sparked something in me. They made me realize that while the legal system is far from perfect, it holds the potential to be a tool for change—a tool I want to wield to fight for people like my family and me. I want to ensure that marginalized communities' voices are heard and amplified in the courtrooms where their lives are profoundly affected. My background has instilled a deep understanding of systemic inequality and its intersections with race, class, and the law. These experiences shaped my passion for criminal justice reform and restorative practices. I aim to be an advocate who defends the accused and works toward dismantling the systems that perpetuate injustice. Whether addressing racial disparities in sentencing, advocating for alternatives to incarceration, or creating community-based support programs, I am committed to using my legal education to enact meaningful change. I see myself becoming a criminal defense attorney who stands up for those society has written off. My experiences growing up in a community where survival often meant navigating a system stacked against us have given me a unique perspective and a relentless drive to make a difference. I want to provide others the same hope and humanity those advocates once offered my family. My ultimate goal is to defend individuals and work toward a legal system that prioritizes rehabilitation over punishment, equity over bias, and understanding over judgment. By pursuing a career in law, I am not just chasing a dream—I am answering a call to action. I am determined to be a part of the solution, bring light into the justice system's darkest corners, and use my story to inspire change. This scholarship would help me achieve my goal and serve as a step toward creating a world where the law is a tool for empowerment and justice for all.

Success, for me, is about creating a lasting impact, achieving personal and professional growth, and remaining aligned with my values. It’s not just about reaching milestones or accomplishing goals, but about building a life where my work inspires others and creates positive change. As an entrepreneur and screenwriter, I define success as making a meaningful contribution to society through my passions—whether it’s through innovative products like Sparkbudz or powerful, authentic storytelling that resonates with underrepresented audiences. One of my proudest achievements has been launching Sparkbudz, a patented two-in-one zipper headphone product I developed in high school. While the journey has been filled with challenges, every hurdle I’ve overcome has taught me resilience and determination. Sparkbudz isn’t just a product—it’s a symbol of innovation and perseverance. My ultimate goal for Sparkbudz is to scale it into a globally recognized brand that reflects my commitment to sustainability and creative problem-solving. Success in this realm means seeing Sparkbudz improve everyday lives while inspiring others, particularly young entrepreneurs, to pursue their own ideas. In addition to my entrepreneurial pursuits, I am passionate about storytelling. As a screenwriter, I aim to create narratives that challenge stereotypes, amplify diverse voices, and inspire meaningful conversations. Representation matters, and I believe that stories have the power to shape perspectives and drive change. Whether I’m writing a film about identity and culture or a series that highlights the nuances of the human experience, success for me means using my creativity to spark awareness and connection. This scholarship is an essential step toward realizing my vision of success. By supporting my education, it will allow me to hone my craft as a screenwriter and refine my storytelling skills. Education provides me with access to invaluable resources, mentorship, and opportunities to collaborate with like-minded peers. These experiences will enhance my ability to create impactful work and contribute to industries where representation is still lacking. Moreover, this opportunity will alleviate some of the financial pressures of balancing entrepreneurship and education. Running Sparkbudz while pursuing a degree has been a rewarding but demanding journey. The support from this scholarship will provide me with the stability to focus on growing my business and furthering my education without compromising my goals. With additional resources, I can scale Sparkbudz, reach new markets, and continue to develop innovative solutions that reflect my values. Looking ahead, I see this scholarship as a catalyst for both my personal and professional growth. It will allow me to create a future where my work in entrepreneurship and storytelling can coexist and thrive. From bringing new products to market to writing stories that inspire, I want my career to reflect the belief that creativity and innovation can drive meaningful change. Ultimately, success for me is about making a difference. Whether it’s through creating a product that improves lives, writing a story that resonates with an audience, or mentoring someone who dreams of following a similar path, I want my journey to inspire others to chase their dreams and embrace their full potential. This opportunity brings me closer to that vision, and I am excited to take the next step.

Faith has been the cornerstone of my life, shaping my outlook and providing me with strength during life’s toughest moments. From a young age, my parents taught me to trust in God and rely on prayer as a source of comfort and guidance. This belief has given me the ability to remain hopeful and resilient, even in situations where success seemed impossible. Faith has helped me to see challenges not as barriers but as opportunities for growth, and this mindset has been instrumental in shaping my personal and professional journey. One pivotal moment in my life came when I was struggling to launch my business, Sparkbudz, a patented product I developed in high school. I was excited about its potential, but the challenges of funding, marketing, and scaling seemed overwhelming. During those moments of doubt, I turned to prayer and reflection. My faith reminded me that every obstacle is an opportunity to learn and grow. It gave me the peace I needed to step back, reevaluate my strategy, and move forward with confidence. Eventually, I was able to secure funding and bring Sparkbudz to market, a milestone I credit to my unwavering belief that God was guiding me through the process. Faith has also shaped my character, influencing how I approach my work and relationships. It has taught me the importance of integrity, kindness, and perseverance. In my career, I strive to maintain these values by treating colleagues and clients with respect and compassion. I see every task, no matter how small, as an opportunity to make a positive impact. This perspective not only strengthens my work ethic but also inspires me to continue growing and helping others along the way. Looking to the future, I know that my faith will continue to guide me in my career. Whether I am faced with difficult decisions, unexpected setbacks, or moments of uncertainty, I trust that God’s plan for me is greater than I can imagine. My faith gives me the confidence to pursue ambitious goals, knowing that I am never alone in my journey. It encourages me to dream big while staying grounded in gratitude and humility. Ultimately, my faith is more than a belief system—it is a source of strength and purpose that drives me to achieve my best while staying true to my values. Sparkbudz is not just a business; it is a testament to how faith and perseverance can turn dreams into reality.

Growing up, I’ve faced challenges that have shaped who I am and how I approach my education. One of the biggest obstacles has been adapting to life as a student while balancing personal and financial struggles. These challenges have taught me resilience and the value of hard work, and they’ve fueled my drive to pursue a degree in STEM. I’ve always been passionate about STEM because I love solving problems and coming up with creative solutions. STEM isn’t just about numbers and formulas to me—it’s a way to make a real impact in the world. Whether it’s finding ways to make things more sustainable or creating technology that helps people, I see STEM as a field where I can combine my curiosity and creativity to make a difference. Financially, my journey hasn’t been easy. Paying for higher education has required sacrifices, budgeting, and constant focus. I’ve worked hard to contribute to my education, but there are still times when it feels overwhelming. That’s why this scholarship would mean so much to me. It would help ease the financial burden and allow me to focus more on my studies and less on worrying about how to pay for them. It would also be a reminder that someone believes in my potential and supports my goals. This scholarship wouldn’t just help me financially—it would also inspire me to keep pushing forward, no matter what challenges come my way. I’m determined to finish my degree and use my education to create a brighter future for myself and others. Thank you for considering me for this opportunity.
    BIPOC Urban Innovators Scholarship
Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the challenges that underserved communities face—challenges like homelessness, gentrification, and the lack of affordable housing. My background as both a creative entrepreneur and a student passionate about storytelling and advocacy has shaped my understanding of the systemic issues that persist in urban environments. These experiences have fueled my desire to positively impact urban planning and economics, focusing on combating inequities and promoting sustainable solutions. As a current Cal State Northridge student pursuing a B.A. in Screenwriting, I have developed skills in crafting narratives that connect deeply with people’s experiences. My entrepreneurial ventures, such as founding Sparkbudz, a patented two-in-one zipper headphones product, and launching Sassy Mouth Straws, a sustainable and customizable straw brand, demonstrate my ability to identify problems and develop innovative solutions. Through these endeavors, I have gained valuable insights into the importance of sustainability and the role of the community in driving impactful change. My interest in urban planning and economics stems from a deep commitment to addressing disparities in housing and economic opportunities. I am passionate about finding creative and collaborative ways to combat homelessness and gentrification while advocating for affordable housing. I believe everyone deserves a safe and stable place to call home. I am motivated to use my skills and education to contribute to policies and initiatives that prioritize equity and inclusion. One of the most transformative experiences of my life was volunteering for the Above the Limits Special Needs Program, where I worked with individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities. This experience taught me the importance of empathy and community-driven solutions in addressing societal challenges. It also underscored the significance of creating spaces where everyone feels seen, valued, and included—a principle I carry into my aspirations for urban planning. In addition to addressing housing inequities, I am passionate about promoting sustainability. My entrepreneurial projects have taught me the value of eco-conscious innovation. For instance, my work on Sassy Mouth Straws has focused on reducing plastic waste while offering consumers a stylish and functional alternative. I aim to bring this same environmentally conscious approach to urban development, ensuring that sustainability is at the forefront of every decision. What motivates me most is the idea of creating lasting, systemic change. I envision a career where I can bridge the gap between creativity, entrepreneurship, and urban planning to design equitable and sustainable urban environments. I am inspired by the stories of individuals and communities who fight for their right to thrive, and I want to play a role in shaping cities that support and uplift everyone. This scholarship represents an opportunity to further my education and expand my ability to make meaningful contributions to urban planning and economics. It will allow me to deepen my understanding of the systemic issues I am passionate about and equip me with the tools needed to drive real change. By pursuing this path, I hope to honor the resilience of those who inspired me and work toward a future where equity and sustainability are not just aspirations but realities.
