As I was heavily involved in high school activities, I grew as a very well-rounded student who excelled in all the core values of community service. I have witnessed and exemplified the true meaning of giving back to one another and how truly impeccable genuine service is to the world around me. I now more than ever understand what it takes to make a positive impact on the communities around me and the world around all of us. Under the National Honor Society, I put forth most of my dedication to service as we made donations, funded charities, and hosted surrounding organizations in our community that assisted those in need. I became aware of the endless opportunities there were to give back to the less fortunate. My understanding made a turnaround as I grew to understand that there is meaning to helping others. Genuine compassion is what I’ve learned to be the key component. Many refuse to help others with the engrossed idealism that if they were in that situation, nobody would help them. Under the Air Force JROTC, our core values have us in touch with every prospect that can help us thrive as active citizens of the community. The core values were “integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do”. We as cadets then applied these commitments to our community. This all helped me pursue a commitment to community service as I could accurately apply the true meanings of moral values to assist others. One existing problem I would like to solve and apply my commitment to in modern society is the systematic oppression festering inside America’s criminal justice system. Systematic oppression is an epidemic in various established institutions that plague citizens’ rights and recovery. I plan on tackling this expansive issue by becoming an attorney who can help others who are not able to help themselves in the challenging fight against the system that was made to degrade and destroy people of color since the system was even established. By learning the faults throughout the system, I could possibly successfully help somebody exceed through a system whose purpose was to destroy them. A bigger context of solving this problem could be by even establishing my own law firm with non-other than a majority black team of paralegals. With enough proof of rehabilitation and restoration, even the previously convicted can turn their life around by helping others who are presently facing the same situations. Receiving this scholarship would help my journey to pursue tackling this goal. It would almost be like putting your money back into the community because it is funding the education needed to help others. I plan on utilizing the scholarship gratefully by doing what is needed to make the world a better place with my service to the community.

Learning and participating in community service events and organizations as a child helped me acknowledge that it was other people in this world who were of the less fortunate that needed my help more than I needed my own help. I wanted to be the help for other people that I did not receive growing up. Doing these things during my upbringing sort of made it a scheduled routine for me that I advanced in my knowledge of. Once I got to high school, I truly could understand these values and advance them even more with the endless opportunities that high school gives you. As I was heavily involved in high school activities, I grew as a very well-rounded student who excelled in all the core values of community service. I have witnessed and exemplified the true meaning of giving back to one another and how truly impeccable genuine service is to the world around me. Genuine compassion and determination are what I’ve learned to be key components. Many refuse to help others with the engrossed idealism that if they were in that situation, nobody would help them. Breaking that cycle would bring back the uprightness of one’s true morals. In this extracurricular, I satisfied my inner child's wants to give back to others, especially kids who were once in my same position, so I could be there for them since nobody was there for me. Not only should it give you good karma, but a feeling of accomplishment and nirvana as you know you are benefitting others. Under the Air Force JROTC, our core values have us in touch with every prospect that can help us thrive as active citizens of the community. The core values were “integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do”. We as cadets then applied these commitments to our community. We participate in and host weekly community service events that could also enhance communication and collaborative skills. Under the program, I have learned so much that has benefitted me every day since in my days going forward. This all helped me pursue a commitment to community service as I could accurately apply the true meanings of moral values to assist others. I feel as though I have left a huge impact on many of the people I have encountered during events through my compassionate personality and encouragement. I also have encouraged many of my peers to get involved alongside me which builds the force behind service. I am appreciative of all the things and experiences I have faced during my commitment to community service. If I receive this scholarship, I plan on using it to obtain an education that pursues giving back to the community. I am applying for this scholarship because the well-known journey to law school is very costly. I would be ecstatically grateful to receive this scholarship because I would like to believe it is good karma for all the service I have put out into my community to make the world a better place.

A problem I have witnessed that has been surfacing over the past couple of decades is discrimination and oppression continuously being a contrary discussion in America. Racism still plays a massive role in our society despite the efforts of many to impede it. I feel as though there are more prominent problems in today’s world that should be more attention than the color of people’s skin is receiving. Global warming, brewing pandemics, housing crises, or any other present-day occurrences I feel require more attention than something that should have been resolved years ago. Racism not only harms black people’s daily lives, but many African Americans or even colored people are falling victim to many biased decisions made by the people who are making today’s laws. This creates a sense of tyranny as political leaders have such control over things and people, who feel as though they are superior to others. This is leading to more people of color being arrested, abused, or even ignored by the system. Legal statistics accurately display the oppression against black people as biased leaders target people of low-income communities which house none other than the black community. This roots in America’s racist history as the nation was once divided by the color of their skin and were treated not even as human because of it. Many of the first police forces to come about were slave patrols, so the ties are uncanny. The target on black people has not come to a rest but is more hidden in terms of the sneaky ways our system still is in touch with unjustifiable idealisms. In all the ways that the systems are failing African Americans, these factors take a toll on mental health as well as develop severe PTSD. Not knowing when you would be the next person to fall victim to racial encounters is a constant thought in the back of many African Americans' heads. One existing problem I would like to solve in modern society is the systematic oppression festering inside America’s criminal justice system. With enough proof of rehabilitation and restoration, even the previously convicted can turn their life around by helping others who are presently facing the same situations. As more minorities are making their way into high legal/law positions, there are hopes for their impact in restoring a humane, fair way to judge and interpret cases. Many running’s and elections are even now receiving their first black person in these positions. This is a huge turnaround for a race that just was unable to vote not even a couple of decades ago. Receiving this scholarship would help my journey to pursue tackling this goal. It would almost be like putting your money back into the community because it is funding the education needed to help others. I plan on utilizing the scholarship gratefully by doing what is needed to make the world a better place with my service to the community.

Robert F. Lawson Fund for Careers that Care
Hello my name is Brianna Terry, I am a 17 year old from Maryland who is interested in pursing law and becoming an attorney. The reason I wanted to pursue law as a child was because of the injustices I have seen, especially during the past couple years through the pandemic, on black people by law enforcement or through the courts. Viral stories like of George Floyd or Ahmad Arbery are some examples of modern time problems and reasons why I wanted to enter this career field. My inspiration truly comes from all of the protest and violence that surfaced as result. This idea of helping others sparked when as a child, my family and I were brutally harrassed by officers when we were the ones who called, all because of the color of our skin and the are we were in. I thought to myself, I want to make the world of law and legality a better place. As a prosecutor, it is not necessarily the same as being an attorney where you're advocating for another's freedom, it is about putting away the bad guy. My plans are to positively affect the community by putting away the dangers that lurk within. This means giving people who committed crimes like rape, theft, murder, kidnapping, etc., adequate sentencing and create safer environments. As a prosecutor this also means not abusing my power and giving fair consequences to offenders. Many injustices in law also appear in the court room and as a prosecutor, my goal is to create a fair court and to not automatically be the defendants enemy. To purse this career, it is going to take a number of courses, studying, books, and such, as law school typically is a lengthy course of study. Therefore, I will need all the help I can get financially to set myself up to be a very well educated lawyer who knows her laws and how to apply them to situations fairly. This can create a positive impact on the world as it is putting an educated female law student in the world who focuses more so on gun laws and safety rather than laws contradicting a women's body. I do dream about becoming a Supreme Court Justice but everybody has to start from somewhere. Working to fight the injustices in regular courts is where I want to start first. Winning this scholarship along with others can boost my inspiration as well as process in this course of study and create a very thankful person.
