    Bookshelf to Big Screen Scholarship
One of my favorite book-to-film adaptations is The Lord of the Rings trilogy, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's iconic novels and directed by Peter Jackson. While there are many remarkable adaptations, this one stands out for its breathtaking ability to honor the depth, scale, and emotional weight of the original material while leveraging the strengths of cinema to bring Middle-earth to life. This adaptation not only bridged the gap between reading and viewing but also deepened my connection to the story in ways I hadn’t imagined. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novels are dense, richly detailed, and expansive. For years, I was intimidated by their complexity, particularly the exhaustive descriptions of landscapes, languages, and history. However, when I first watched Peter Jackson’s adaptation, it was as though the films unlocked the world Tolkien had crafted in my imagination. The visual storytelling helped clarify aspects of the book that I had found difficult to visualize, such as the vastness of the Mines of Moria, the beauty of Rivendell, or the terror of Mount Doom. The careful attention to detail in costume design, sets, and special effects ensured that Middle-earth felt as immersive and authentic on screen as it did in Tolkien’s prose. What made the adaptation particularly special was its emotional resonance. Reading Tolkien’s works, I felt a sense of awe at the scope of the story but struggled to connect with some of the characters. The films, however, brought these relationships to life with a powerful immediacy. The deep friendship between Frodo and Sam, Aragorn’s reluctant embrace of his destiny, and Gandalf’s wisdom and humor became even more poignant when expressed through the performances of actors like Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Viggo Mortensen, and Ian McKellen. Their portrayals added layers of humanity to Tolkien’s epic, making the characters feel like real people rather than mythic archetypes. The adaptation also bridged the gap between reading and viewing by capturing the central themes of the books in a way that resonated across generations. Tolkien’s exploration of friendship, sacrifice, courage, and the corrupting influence of power were beautifully translated onto the screen. Scenes like Sam’s speech about hope and perseverance at the end of The Two Towers or Frodo’s quiet despair in The Return of the King are as powerful in the films as they are in the books. These moments not only stayed true to the source material but also amplified its emotional impact through the use of music, cinematography, and pacing. The soundtrack by Howard Shore deserves special mention for how it complemented the story. The music served as a bridge between the written and visual narratives, evoking the same feelings of wonder, fear, and triumph I had while reading the books. The themes associated with characters and locations, such as the ethereal melody for Lothlórien or the triumphant horns of Rohan, added a layer of emotional texture to the story that words alone couldn’t capture. Ultimately, what makes The Lord of the Rings adaptation so meaningful to me is how it transformed my relationship with Tolkien’s work. After watching the films, I revisited the books with a newfound appreciation, finding that I could imagine the characters and settings more vividly than before. The films didn’t just adapt the story—they enhanced it, creating a dialogue between the two mediums. This adaptation demonstrated the power of film to bring literature to life, making the transition from page to screen feel seamless and inspiring me to engage with the story in a more profound way. It remains a testament to the beauty of storytelling in all its forms.
Isaac Yunhu Lee Memorial Arts Scholarship
I’ve grown up with art as my constant companion, a tool of self-expression and a safe haven in a world that often felt overwhelming. Since I was young, I’ve been drawn to creating—sketching, painting, sculpting—anything that could translate the storm of emotions inside me into something tangible. Living with bipolar depression from an early age has made this process not just a passion but a necessity. Art became my way of coping, of making sense of the highs and lows that often felt impossible to articulate with words. I can’t say I have one favorite piece of art, as every painting, sketch, and sculpture I’ve created carries a piece of my story. However, one creation stands out because of the moment it represents in my journey. I painted it last year during a particularly difficult period. It’s an abstract piece called Rise, and it’s a blend of deep blues, vibrant yellows, and soft whites. The canvas is dominated by sweeping brushstrokes that blend into one another, creating the impression of waves breaking against the shore at sunrise. The inspiration behind Rise came from a moment of reflection after weeks of struggling with depressive episodes. I had been feeling lost, weighed down by a sense of hopelessness that seemed to have no end. One morning, as I watched the sun rise through my bedroom window, I was struck by the realization that no matter how dark the night feels, the day always follows. That sunrise wasn’t just light breaking into the world—it was a metaphor for resilience, for the inevitability of change, and for hope. When I painted Rise, I poured every bit of that realization onto the canvas. The deep blues represent the darkness I’ve known intimately, the struggles and the silence that often accompany depression. The yellows are the hope, the brightness that comes when you least expect it but need it the most. The soft whites symbolize the space in between—the transitions, the moments of calm amidst the chaos. Together, these elements tell a story of persistence and the belief that no matter how hard things get, there’s always something better ahead. Art has always been my way of grounding myself in reality. When I’m creating, the world quiets down, and I can focus on translating my emotions into something I can see and touch. It’s like having a conversation with myself, a way to process feelings that are often too overwhelming to confront directly. Through art, I’ve found a language to communicate my struggles, my victories, and everything in between. Lately, I’ve been struggling again, and I’ve found myself returning to the lessons Rise taught me. Life is hard, and there are moments when it feels like the waves are too much to bear. But creating reminds me that I have the power to shape my reality, even if it’s just on a canvas. Art brings me back to myself, reminding me that this life, as unpredictable and challenging as it is, can get better. And as long as I have my paints and brushes, I’ll keep telling that story.

My name is Brianna Matias, and I am a psychology major with aspirations of becoming a psychiatrist. My academic journey is driven by a deep passion for understanding the complexities of the human mind and using that knowledge to help others. Growing up in a family that faced challenges such as immigration and socioeconomic struggles, I developed a strong sense of empathy and resilience that has shaped who I am today. These experiences have fueled my desire to create meaningful change, particularly in the realm of mental health, where stigma and limited access to care continue to affect countless individuals. Mental health advocacy is at the core of my aspirations, and I believe that addressing these issues can lead to a more compassionate and equitable world. I aim to break the silence surrounding mental health, especially in underserved communities, where cultural stigma and systemic barriers often prevent individuals from seeking help. My goal is to make mental health resources accessible and culturally sensitive, ensuring that care is available to everyone, regardless of their background or financial status. To achieve this, I plan to use my education and future career to promote awareness and provide holistic mental health care. By integrating traditional therapy with practices such as mindfulness, nutrition, and physical activity, I hope to address not only the mind but also the body and spirit. This comprehensive approach to healing recognizes the interconnectedness of well-being and ensures that individuals are treated as whole beings, not just as symptoms or diagnoses. In addition to my professional goals, I am passionate about community engagement and education. I believe that change starts with awareness, and I hope to organize workshops, support groups, and school programs that teach individuals about mental health and wellness from a young age. These initiatives will aim to foster empathy, resilience, and understanding, helping to dismantle the stigma that surrounds mental health. Beyond individual care, I am also committed to advocating for systemic changes that support mental health and holistic well-being. This includes pushing for policies that fund mental health services, promote preventive care, and prioritize underserved communities. I understand that meaningful change requires action on multiple levels—individual, community, and systemic—and I am determined to make an impact on all fronts. My journey is not just about academic or professional success; it is about using my experiences, knowledge, and voice to uplift others. I want to inspire people to see mental health not as a weakness but as a vital part of overall well-being. By sharing my story and dedicating my life to this work, I hope to empower others to prioritize their mental health and seek help without fear or shame. In summary, I am a passionate, driven individual who aspires to make a lasting impact on the world through mental health advocacy, holistic care, and systemic change. I believe that every individual deserves access to compassionate and comprehensive care, and I am committed to working tirelessly to make that vision a reality. Through education, outreach, and advocacy, I aim to create a world where mental health is not just addressed but celebrated as an essential component of a healthy, fulfilling life.
    Jim Coots Scholarship
Receiving scholarship funding will significantly impact my ability to pursue my education and contribute meaningfully to the field of holistic health and healing. As a student with aspirations of becoming a psychiatrist, I am passionate about integrating holistic approaches into mental health care to address not just the mind but the body and spirit as well. This funding would alleviate financial stress, allowing me to focus entirely on my studies and professional development. By reducing the burden of tuition and related expenses, I can dedicate more time to internships, research, and hands-on experiences that will prepare me to provide comprehensive care to those in need. Holistic health is an area that deeply resonates with me because it recognizes the interconnectedness of mental, physical, and emotional well-being. My vision is to make mental health care more inclusive and effective by integrating practices such as mindfulness, nutritional guidance, and physical activity alongside traditional therapeutic approaches. Many individuals, especially those in underserved communities, face barriers to accessing care that addresses their full range of needs. I want to bring holistic practices into these communities to provide affordable, culturally sensitive care that acknowledges the unique challenges people face. One of the key areas I hope to impact is the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly in immigrant and minority populations. Growing up in a family that faced these challenges, I understand how cultural beliefs can discourage individuals from seeking help. By integrating holistic practices, I aim to offer solutions that feel more approachable and aligned with cultural values, making care more accessible and reducing stigma. For example, introducing mindfulness and meditation can be a culturally neutral way to initiate conversations about mental health and healing. Additionally, I am committed to advocating for systemic changes that support holistic health initiatives. Many existing systems focus on addressing symptoms without examining root causes, leading to temporary solutions rather than long-term wellness. I want to advocate for policies that fund programs promoting preventive care and holistic treatments, ensuring that these practices become a standard part of health care. This scholarship will enable me to take the first steps toward these goals, empowering me to complete my education, deepen my knowledge, and gain the skills necessary to create meaningful change. With this support, I hope to contribute to a future where holistic health is not a luxury but a standard of care accessible to all. Through outreach, education, and advocacy, I aim to help individuals and communities achieve balanced, sustainable well-being.

Education is a powerful tool for creating meaningful change, and I plan to use mine to positively impact my community by addressing mental health disparities and promoting access to care. As a psychology major aspiring to become a psychiatrist, I am deeply committed to reducing the stigma around mental health, particularly in underserved populations. Growing up in a family that faced challenges, including immigration and socioeconomic struggles, I witnessed how mental health issues were often misunderstood or ignored. These experiences have fueled my desire to bridge the gap between individuals and the support they need, ensuring that mental health becomes a priority rather than an afterthought. One of my goals is to organize workshops and support groups in my community that provide safe spaces for people to discuss their mental health challenges. These sessions would focus on education and awareness, equipping individuals with the tools to recognize mental health issues and seek help. Collaborating with schools and local organizations, I aim to implement mental health education programs that start at a young age, fostering a culture of empathy and understanding. By normalizing these conversations early, we can create a generation that is more informed and compassionate about mental health. As a future psychiatrist, I plan to serve in underserved areas where access to mental health care is limited. Many individuals in such communities face barriers like cultural stigma, financial constraints, and a lack of resources. I want to provide affordable, culturally sensitive care that addresses these unique challenges, especially for bilingual and bicultural populations. Ensuring that language and cultural differences are not obstacles to receiving care is crucial to creating an inclusive and effective mental health system. Furthermore, I aim to advocate for policies that increase funding for mental health services and promote equitable access to care. Addressing systemic barriers is essential for creating long-term, sustainable change. Breaking the silence surrounding mental health is another key aspect of my plan. In many immigrant and minority communities, mental health struggles are met with silence or shame. By sharing my own journey and being vulnerable, I hope to inspire others to seek help and speak openly about their experiences. This openness can have a ripple effect, encouraging others to prioritize their mental well-being and support those around them. Finally, I aim to mentor young individuals passionate about making a difference in mental health. By sharing my knowledge and supporting their growth, I hope to cultivate the next generation of advocates and professionals who will continue to drive change. Through outreach, advocacy, and mentorship, I intend to use my education to empower my community and create a future where mental health resources are accessible and stigma-free.

My name is Brianna Matias, a psychology major with a deep passion for understanding and improving mental health, especially within marginalized communities. My journey is shaped by my experiences as a Mexican-American and a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, navigating unique intersections of identity and resilience. These layers of who I am have profoundly influenced my aspirations to become a psychiatrist and provide culturally sensitive mental health care that honors individual stories and struggles. Mental well-being is my greatest passion. Growing up in a family of five, I witnessed the challenges of balancing emotional health with societal expectations, particularly for my immigrant parents. Their resilience inspired me to pursue a career where I could provide support to those facing mental health challenges. This passion has driven me to study psychology and explore how socioeconomic, cultural, and personal identities influence mental health outcomes. My goal is to create spaces where everyone feels seen, understood, and empowered to heal. The opportunity to carry on Coco’s legacy represents a chance to honor authenticity and self-expression. I intend to use the funds to further my education and support initiatives that destigmatize mental health conversations, especially within the LGBTQIA+ and immigrant communities. Whether it’s developing workshops, collaborating with nonprofits, or creating accessible resources, I want to build platforms that amplify voices like Coco’s—voices that inspire others to embrace their true selves unapologetically. LGBTQIA+ Identity and Its Impact on My Goals As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, my identity has been both a source of strength and a compass guiding my dreams. Growing up, I often felt like I didn’t fully belong, struggling to reconcile cultural expectations with my authentic self. Yet, these challenges became my motivation to create spaces where others would never feel alone in their identities. My experiences taught me empathy, resilience, and the importance of representation. Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community has also shaped my vision for mental health care. I aspire to break barriers for those who feel unseen, providing affirming care that acknowledges the complexities of intersectionality. I want to address the disparities in mental health services, particularly for queer youth and individuals from immigrant families who often face compounded challenges. Coco’s legacy of celebrating authenticity fuels my commitment to advocating for others. With this support, I will not only honor Coco’s life but also build a legacy of inclusion, compassion, and empowerment. Together, we can create a world where everyone has the chance to thrive, unapologetically themselves.
    Expression in Medicine Scholarship
Free expression is an essential ideal in medicine because it underpins innovation, ethical practice, and patient-centered care. At its core, free expression fosters an environment where medical professionals, patients, and researchers can openly share ideas, challenge existing norms, and collaborate to advance healthcare. It ensures that diverse perspectives and voices are valued, leading to better outcomes for individuals and communities alike. In medicine, free expression drives progress. Historically, many groundbreaking discoveries—such as the germ theory of disease or the development of vaccines—emerged from individuals questioning prevailing beliefs. Without the freedom to express dissenting opinions or explore unconventional ideas, the field risks stagnation. Encouraging open dialogue allows professionals to exchange knowledge and develop innovative solutions to complex challenges. Free expression is also critical to ethical medical practice. Open communication between patients and providers enables trust and informed decision-making. When patients feel empowered to voice their concerns, preferences, and cultural values, care becomes more personalized and effective. Similarly, free expression allows healthcare professionals to advocate for their patients, report ethical concerns, and address systemic injustices within the field. Moreover, free expression supports diversity and equity in medicine. By creating spaces where underrepresented voices can be heard, the medical community can better address health disparities and design interventions that reflect the needs of all populations. This inclusivity not only strengthens the field but also builds public trust in the medical system. To protect and bolster free expression, individuals in the medical field must actively cultivate an environment that values open dialogue and intellectual curiosity. First, institutions should establish policies that encourage the respectful exchange of ideas while safeguarding against retaliation for dissent. For example, medical schools and hospitals can create forums for professionals to discuss challenges, propose solutions, and share experiences without fear of judgment. Second, healthcare providers should prioritize patient-centered communication by listening actively and respecting diverse perspectives. This involves recognizing the impact of cultural, social, and personal factors on health and creating opportunities for patients to express their needs. Third, individuals must advocate for systemic changes that protect freedom of speech and access to information. This includes supporting policies that uphold scientific integrity, combating misinformation, and promoting equity in research and education. Finally, professionals should lead by example, demonstrating the value of free expression in their work. By mentoring others, publishing research, and engaging in community outreach, they can inspire future generations to uphold this ideal. In sum, free expression is not merely an abstract principle in medicine—it is a catalyst for progress, equity, and trust. By fostering open communication and protecting the right to share ideas, individuals in the medical field can ensure that this ideal continues to benefit patients and society as a whole.

My family dynamic is unique and deeply supportive. My parents immigrated from Mexico, bringing with them a strong sense of cultural pride and determination. Despite facing challenges as immigrants, they worked tirelessly to provide my siblings and me with opportunities they never had. My father, who pursued his education here in the United States, has always emphasized the importance of learning and personal growth. My mother, whom I lovingly call "Mami," has been the emotional backbone of our family, teaching us the value of kindness and perseverance. As the youngest of three, I share a special bond with my older brother James and my twin brother. Together, we’ve navigated life’s ups and downs, always leaning on each other for support. My name is Brianna Matias, and I am a psychology major with a deep passion for mental health advocacy and care. Growing up in a close-knit family, I developed a profound appreciation for the importance of emotional and mental well-being. Through my personal and academic experiences, I’ve come to understand that mental health is often overlooked or stigmatized, despite its critical role in overall health. This realization has inspired me to pursue a career in psychiatry, where I aim to provide compassionate, holistic care to individuals struggling with mental health challenges. My journey toward a career in healthcare began with my fascination for understanding people—what drives them, what helps them heal, and what allows them to thrive. I’ve always been drawn to stories of resilience and growth, and this curiosity led me to study psychology. As a student at Stony Brook University, I’ve had the opportunity to dive into the complexities of human behavior, brain function, and therapeutic interventions. Each class has deepened my commitment to the field and broadened my perspective on how mental health intersects with physical health, social circumstances, and cultural factors. One of the defining factors in my decision to pursue psychiatry is my personal experience with mental health challenges. Navigating my own struggles with a mood disorder taught me the value of empathy, self-care, and seeking professional support. These lessons have shaped how I connect with others and reinforced my desire to be a source of understanding and guidance for people facing similar challenges. I’ve also seen firsthand how access to proper mental health care can change lives, and I want to play an active role in providing that care to others. In addition to my academic studies, I’ve had meaningful opportunities to apply what I’ve learned. My role as a behavior technician allowed me to work closely with children and families, supporting them in achieving developmental milestones and improving behavioral outcomes. This experience gave me insight into how early interventions can make a significant difference in shaping a person’s future. It also reinforced my belief in tailoring care to the unique needs of each individual—a principle I plan to carry into my future work as a psychiatrist. I am particularly drawn to psychiatry because it combines the science of medicine with the art of human connection. It requires not only diagnosing and treating conditions but also understanding the person behind the symptoms. I want to be a psychiatrist who listens deeply, respects individual experiences, and collaborates with patients to develop treatment plans that align with their goals and values. I am also interested in exploring how cultural and socioeconomic factors influence mental health, as I believe that addressing these aspects is crucial to providing truly effective care. Beyond clinical practice, I am passionate about reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and increasing access to care. As someone who has benefited from a strong support system, I am aware that not everyone has the same opportunities or resources. I want to advocate for policies and programs that make mental health care more equitable and accessible, particularly for underserved communities. Ultimately, my goal is to create an environment where individuals feel safe, valued, and empowered to take control of their mental health. By becoming a psychiatrist, I hope to combine my academic knowledge, personal experiences, and passion for helping others into a fulfilling career that makes a positive impact on people’s lives. I am excited about the journey ahead and committed to dedicating myself to this field, where I can contribute to the well-being and resilience of others.

Growing up in an immigrant family from Mexico, I witnessed the complexities of balancing cultural expectations with new experiences and saw the mental health struggles that can arise from this transition. My own journey with mental health challenges has given me insight into the importance of accessible and culturally sensitive care, especially for marginalized communities. I am passionate about reducing the stigma around mental health and providing support to those who may feel isolated or misunderstood. This scholarship would allow me to focus more fully on my studies and extracurricular activities, which are all steps toward my ultimate goal of helping others achieve mental well-being. Financially, this scholarship would make a substantial difference for me. Balancing school with part-time work has been challenging, and this support would ease some of the financial strain, allowing me to dedicate more time to academic growth, research opportunities, and community engagement. It would give me the freedom to participate in internships or research roles that may not offer a stipend, but which would be invaluable in preparing me for a career in mental health. This support would also help me focus on my sociology concentration, allowing me to explore social factors that influence mental health and incorporate this understanding into my future practice as a psychiatrist. My long-term goal is to establish a practice that offers compassionate, culturally sensitive mental health care, particularly for immigrant and underserved communities. I envision using my background in psychology and sociology to create a space where people feel seen and understood. Additionally, I hope to contribute to community outreach initiatives, providing workshops and resources to reduce mental health stigma. Ultimately, I want to make mental health care more accessible and inclusive for all. One of the most challenging experiences I’ve faced was dealing with a mood disorder during my college years. At times, I struggled with self-doubt, fatigue, and feelings of isolation that impacted my academic performance and personal life. There were moments when my condition felt overwhelming, but with time, I learned to manage it through self-care, professional support, and a commitment to my own well-being. Therapy and medication helped me understand my emotions, while mindfulness and exercise gave me tools to manage stress. My family and close friends were a significant source of strength, encouraging me to continue pursuing my goals even when things felt difficult. Overcoming this experience taught me resilience and the importance of seeking support, which further motivates me to help others navigate their own mental health challenges. This journey reinforced my commitment to mental health advocacy and to becoming a psychiatrist. I want to use my experiences to support others in their moments of need, creating a positive impact in a field that has been so meaningful in my own life.
    Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
One technology that deeply inspires me is telemedicine. Though not new, it has revolutionized the way healthcare is accessed, making it especially impactful in the realm of mental health. Telemedicine has expanded access to care, offering a lifeline to people who might otherwise be unable to receive help due to distance, cost, or stigma. This technology highlights how innovative solutions can break down barriers and make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Telemedicine, particularly in mental health, allows patients to connect with professionals remotely, reducing the need for travel and making it more accessible for those in rural or underserved areas. For many people, mental health care can be challenging to access due to limited providers or long wait times, especially in remote locations. Telemedicine bridges this gap, making it possible for individuals in remote or underserved areas to speak with therapists, counselors, or psychiatrists without needing to travel. This expansion of access is transformative for individuals who might otherwise suffer in silence. Beyond geographical limitations, telemedicine addresses another major barrier: stigma. In many communities, there is still a lingering stigma around seeking mental health care, often preventing people from visiting clinics in person. Telemedicine allows individuals to seek help privately from their homes, which can reduce the fear of being judged and encourage more people to reach out for the support they need. This shift is crucial because it enables more people to engage in therapy and receive interventions early, potentially improving their outcomes over time. The convenience of telemedicine also makes it easier for individuals to incorporate mental health care into their daily routines. For those with busy schedules, such as working parents or full-time students, finding time for therapy can be challenging. With telemedicine, they can schedule sessions that fit their lives without taking extensive time off or disrupting their responsibilities. This flexibility can be particularly beneficial for individuals managing chronic conditions or ongoing mental health concerns, as it encourages them to continue with their treatment and work consistently toward their mental well-being. Telemedicine’s role during the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated its immense value. It allowed mental health care to continue virtually when in-person visits were restricted, showing the resilience of telehealth systems. This period underscored how technology can be adaptable and crucial in crisis situations, allowing patients to maintain continuity of care during difficult times.

Mental health has been a defining part of my life and has significantly influenced my choice to pursue a career in psychology, with the goal of becoming a psychiatrist. Growing up, I struggled with a mood disorder that impacted my sense of identity, relationships, and academic performance. Living with these challenges without a strong mental health support system was isolating at times, especially in my cultural background where discussing mental health openly is not always encouraged. Over time, I learned that prioritizing mental health is essential, not only for managing my personal challenges but also for achieving my goals and helping others who may feel similarly. These experiences have been both difficult and deeply formative. They’ve taught me resilience and the importance of self-compassion, as well as the necessity of a multi-faceted approach to mental health care. Managing my mental health involves daily habits like mindfulness, regular medication, and self-care practices that allow me to remain focused and engaged in my studies and work. This journey has given me valuable insight into the mental health field from a personal perspective, driving my desire to make mental health resources more accessible, particularly in communities where stigma or lack of resources might prevent people from reaching out. Being open about my experiences has allowed me to be there for others in ways that I needed at one time. Whether it’s with friends, family, or classmates, I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental environment where people feel comfortable sharing their mental health struggles. I’ve learned to listen attentively and validate their feelings, offering empathy and understanding rather than advice. This has reinforced my belief that, for many people, having someone to talk to who genuinely understands their challenges can be incredibly powerful. My personal journey with mental health has also helped me understand the value of culturally sensitive care. I grew up in an environment where mental health was not often discussed, and I have seen how cultural stigma can prevent people from seeking the help they need. As I continue my education, I am committed to using my experiences to build a clinical practice that is inclusive and empathetic, especially for individuals from immigrant and marginalized backgrounds. I aim to reduce the stigma around mental health and educate people on the importance of mental well-being, empowering them to seek the support they deserve. In my future career as a psychiatrist, I plan to create an impact by advocating for accessible mental health care and fostering open dialogues around mental health, especially in underserved communities. I envision a practice where people feel safe and understood, where mental health is treated with the same respect and importance as physical health. Additionally, I hope to contribute to mental health education through workshops and community outreach, helping to build awareness and reduce stigma. Ultimately, my experiences with mental health have given me a strong foundation of empathy, resilience, and a deep commitment to improving the lives of others. These experiences drive me to pursue a career where I can provide compassionate care, offer meaningful support, and advocate for a world where mental health resources are available and accessible to all.

I have always been drawn to supporting others emotionally, and this desire has grown stronger as I have progressed in my psychology studies. While I am not yet a licensed professional, I try to offer support to friends, classmates, and family members who struggle with stress, anxiety, or feelings of isolation. I listen without judgment, encourage open conversations about mental health, and help them explore coping strategies that may be useful. In doing so, I aim to create a safe, understanding environment where they feel valued and heard. This compassionate approach has shown me how impactful empathy and genuine care can be in someone’s journey to well-being. Through my studies, particularly in psychology and sociology, I have learned about the various ways that mental health is affected by individual, social, and cultural factors. This knowledge has allowed me to offer more informed advice and be sensitive to each person's unique background and challenges. For instance, I recognize how cultural stigma around mental health can prevent people from seeking help, so I encourage open discussions to help break down those barriers. In the future, as a psychiatrist, I plan to continue supporting others’ mental health by combining clinical expertise with a deep understanding of cultural sensitivity and empathy. My goal is to build trust with my patients, especially within immigrant and marginalized communities, where mental health challenges are often heightened by societal pressures. I also hope to make therapy more accessible and reduce the stigma around seeking help, as I believe that early and culturally sensitive intervention can make a significant difference. By actively engaging in mental health advocacy, whether through community outreach, workshops, or one-on-one sessions, I aim to create a ripple effect of emotional support in my community. My studies are equipping me with a solid foundation in mental health research, techniques for effective communication, and a culturally informed perspective—all of which I am committed to using to make a positive impact in people’s lives. My journey is grounded in the belief that mental health care should be compassionate, inclusive, and accessible for all, and I am eager to play a part in realizing that vision.

My experience with addiction began as a way to cope with overwhelming emotions and stress. At first, using substances felt like an escape—a way to numb the pain and quiet the constant anxieties that weighed on me. I thought I could control it, that it was just a temporary solution. But over time, what I thought I controlled began to control me. Addiction consumed more and more of my life, isolating me from the people I cared about and taking me further from the person I wanted to be. Every time I used, I found myself feeling emptier, stuck in a cycle of relief followed by shame and regret. The turning point came when I realized just how much I had lost to addiction—relationships, opportunities, and my own sense of self. I reached a breaking point where I knew I couldn’t continue down this path. Seeking help was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it was also the most transformative. Entering recovery meant facing everything I had tried to avoid and learning to cope in healthier ways. Therapy and support groups became essential to my healing, showing me that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. Through recovery, I’ve come to understand that true strength lies not in escaping my feelings but in learning how to work through them. Since becoming sober, my life has changed in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I’ve reconnected with the people I love and rediscovered my sense of purpose and joy in everyday life. Sobriety has given me clarity and resilience, teaching me that I can face challenges without relying on substances. I’m no longer running from myself but learning to embrace who I am, flaws and all. Life in recovery isn’t always easy, but it’s genuine, and that’s something I wouldn’t trade for anything. My journey has inspired me to pursue a career where I can help others find hope and healing. I’m currently studying psychology, with the goal of becoming a mental health and addiction counselor. I want to provide support for people who may feel as isolated and overwhelmed as I once did. Having experienced addiction firsthand, I understand the depths of the struggle and the courage it takes to seek help. My goal is to create a safe, understanding space where people feel supported in their journey to recovery. I want to help others see that change is possible, that they are capable of rebuilding their lives, and that they are not defined by their past. I hope to use my education to advocate for accessible and compassionate mental health care, especially in communities where addiction is stigmatized. My experience has shown me the transformative power of empathy, and I’m committed to making a positive impact in the lives of others. Through my work, I aim to break down barriers to mental health support and inspire hope for a future where recovery and resilience are possible for everyone.

To me, recovery means reclaiming my life, finding strength and purpose beyond the struggles I once used drugs to escape. For a long time, I turned to substances as a way to cope with overwhelming emotions and stress. It felt like a quick fix, a way to numb the pain and push away the worries that constantly weighed on me. But what started as a way to cope quickly turned into a destructive cycle that only deepened my struggles, clouding my mind and distancing me from the things and people I loved. The relief was temporary, and each time I came down, I felt emptier and further from myself. Recovery has been a journey of rediscovery, learning to face life’s challenges without turning to substances. It has meant confronting my fears, understanding the root of my struggles, and finding healthier ways to cope. In recovery, I’ve found that real strength isn’t in escaping my emotions but in learning how to sit with them, process them, and move forward with clarity and purpose. I’ve learned that pain and challenges don’t have to define me, and that with the right support, I can face them head-on. In recovery, I’ve found light in self-care and the support of others who understand. I now rely on therapy, mindfulness, and a supportive community to help me stay grounded.

Growing up with mental illness has been an intense journey, filled with difficult moments, but it has also sparked a powerful desire within me to understand what’s happening in my mind and to help others who face similar struggles. Depression, especially when it starts early in life, can feel incredibly isolating. I often felt like I was fighting an invisible battle that few people around me could understand, and for a long time, I didn’t know how to put my feelings into words. As I’ve grown older, I’ve gained a better understanding of what depression is and how it affects not just the mind but also the body, relationships, and daily life. Learning about my own mental health challenges has given me a sense of empowerment and purpose. I know now that depression doesn’t define who I am, but it has shaped me, making me more resilient, empathetic, and motivated to support others. Understanding the science and psychology behind depression has helped me make sense of my experiences, and it’s become a passion that drives my career aspirations. Experiencing depression firsthand has also impacted my relationships, teaching me the importance of empathy and openness. I’ve come to realize that many people around me have faced their own mental health challenges, even if they don’t talk about it openly. This realization has deepened my compassion for others, as I’ve learned that everyone is going through something, even if it’s not visible. I now strive to foster an environment of understanding and support in my relationships, where people feel comfortable discussing their challenges without fear of judgment. This has made me more connected to others, showing me the power of listening and empathy. My personal experience with depression has inspired me to pursue a career in psychology. I want to be a source of support for those facing mental health struggles because I understand how overwhelming and isolating it can feel. I want to help others feel seen, heard, and understood in ways I often wished for when I was younger. My goal is to create a safe space where people feel empowered to face their challenges and work toward healing. Growing up, I felt that discussing mental health wasn’t encouraged, and I want to help change that narrative. Ultimately, my experiences with depression have given me a deep appreciation for mental health support, and I am passionate about using my journey to make a positive impact. Overcoming mental health challenges has been a journey of resilience, self-discovery, and gradual progress. One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced is managing anxiety, which has affected various aspects of my life, from academics to personal relationships. For a long time, I struggled with feeling overwhelmed, unsure of how to cope with the stressors that seemed to amplify my anxiety. Recognizing that this was something I couldn’t handle alone was a crucial turning point for me, and reaching out for help marked the beginning of my journey toward healing. One of the first steps I took was seeking support through therapy. Working with a therapist helped me to better understand my anxiety, uncovering the underlying thoughts and patterns that contributed to it. Through therapy, I’ve learned coping mechanisms, such as mindfulness and breathing exercises, that have become invaluable in managing my anxiety on a daily basis. While I still experience moments of stress and worry, I now have tools to address them in healthier ways. Practicing these skills consistently has empowered me to take control of my mental health rather than feeling controlled by it. In addition to therapy, I’ve developed a self-care routine that prioritizes my mental well-being. Exercise has been particularly beneficial, helping me channel my energy and release tension. Regular physical activity, along with journaling and mindfulness practices, has given me a sense of balance and control, even during difficult times. I’ve learned that mental health management isn’t about “fixing” oneself overnight but building routines and habits that support long-term well-being. This shift in perspective has helped me embrace my progress and approach each day with patience and compassion. Moving forward, I’m dedicated to supporting others who face mental health challenges and generating awareness about the importance of mental well-being. As someone who knows how isolating these challenges can feel, I want to foster a sense of community and understanding. By sharing my experiences openly, I hope to normalize discussions about mental health, making it easier for others to seek help without fear of stigma. I believe that vulnerability and honesty about our mental health journeys can create a powerful ripple effect, encouraging others to seek the support they need. I am a committed and passionate student with a strong drive to make a meaningful impact in the field of psychology. My educational journey has been deeply influenced by my personal experiences with mental health, which have inspired me to pursue a degree that allows me to help others navigate their own challenges. My goal is to become a mental health professional who provides compassionate, effective support and advocates for accessible, culturally competent mental health care. I want to work especially within underserved communities, where access to mental health resources is often limited, and make a difference by providing care that respects and understands the unique needs of diverse populations. Being a first-generation college student, I have faced unique challenges in navigating the higher education system. From the start, balancing academic responsibilities with financial pressures has required resilience, persistence, and resourcefulness. While my family has been incredibly supportive, the financial demands of pursuing a degree remain a significant challenge. I have taken on part-time work to help fund my education, which, while valuable, can sometimes interfere with my ability to fully focus on my studies, internships, and extracurricular activities that would further enhance my experience and skill set. This scholarship would make a tremendous difference in my ability to continue my studies and work toward my educational and career goals. With financial assistance, I could devote more time to my coursework, research, and clinical training, rather than focusing on the financial stresses that come with tuition and other expenses. By easing this burden, the scholarship would allow me to explore valuable internship opportunities and participate in research projects that are critical for building my skills as a future psychologist. Each of these experiences would bring me one step closer to becoming a qualified mental health professional and provide me with the skills and insights necessary to support and empower my future clients. In addition to helping me academically, this scholarship would also bring me closer to my goal of creating positive change within BIPOC communities. I am deeply aware of the barriers that exist in accessing mental health care, especially in communities of color, where stigma, economic challenges, and cultural differences can prevent individuals from seeking the support they need. I am committed to working toward a more inclusive mental health landscape, where people of all backgrounds feel safe, respected, and understood. My vision is to use my knowledge and training to break down these barriers and create an environment where every person has access to care that honors their cultural and personal experiences. Receiving this scholarship would be an affirmation of my hard work and dedication, allowing me to focus on my academic pursuits and continue on this journey with a clear mind and heart. It would empower me to reach my full potential as a student, a future psychologist, and an advocate for mental health equity. I am committed to making a meaningful impact, and with this support, I believe I can achieve my goal of becoming a mental health professional who fosters positive change, offers compassion, and advocates for accessible mental health care for all. In the long term, I hope to contribute to a world where mental health is prioritized and accessible, regardless of background or income. This scholarship would be a crucial step toward realizing that vision and enabling me to give back to my community in ways that truly matter. With your support, I am confident that I can continue to grow academically and make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

I am a fan of Sabrina Carpenter because she embodies resilience, authenticity, and growth, both as an artist and as a person. Watching her evolve from her early days in acting to her career as a successful singer-songwriter has been inspiring. Sabrina’s music explores themes of self-discovery, love, heartbreak, and empowerment, all while staying true to who she is. Her lyrics reflect a realness and vulnerability that resonate deeply, making her music feel relatable and comforting. In an industry where many artists are often pressured to fit into molds, Sabrina stands out by confidently charting her own path, and that courage has had a lasting impact on me. Sabrina’s journey from actress to musician, combined with her commitment to growing as an artist, has shown me the importance of pursuing one’s passions wholeheartedly. She’s faced public scrutiny and challenges along the way, yet she continues to move forward with grace and determination, using these experiences to fuel her music rather than letting them deter her. This resilience has inspired me to embrace challenges in my own life, reminding me that setbacks don’t define us—they’re simply part of the journey toward success. Sabrina’s confidence in her vision has taught me to stay true to my goals, even when they seem daunting. Her music, especially in her more recent albums, has impacted me on a personal level. Songs like “Skin” and “because i liked a boy” explore the pain of public judgment and misunderstanding, addressing issues like identity, resilience, and self-worth. These tracks resonate with anyone who’s ever felt judged or misinterpreted, making listeners feel less alone. Sabrina’s ability to take difficult emotions and turn them into art is both inspiring and empowering, as it encourages others to do the same. Her lyrics remind me that it’s okay to be vulnerable and honest about one’s experiences, even if they’re painful, and that there’s strength in owning our stories. As a fan, I admire how Sabrina uses her platform to spread positivity and self-acceptance. Challenge Name: "Heart to Heart Relay" Objective: In "Heart to Heart Relay," couples work together to complete a series of physical and emotional tasks that reveal how well they know each other while strengthening their bond. The challenge tests communication, teamwork, and compatibility, with each stage requiring both a physical task and an intimate conversation to move forward. Couples earn points for each task completed, and the couple with the highest score wins a romantic prize. Challenge Setup: The challenge takes place on the beach, with five different stations arranged along a marked course. Each station has a different task and conversation prompt. Each couple starts at the first station, and they must complete both parts—the physical task and the conversation prompt—before moving on to the next station. Once they finish a station, they can sprint to the next one. The Five Stations: Station 1: “Love Leap” Physical Task: One partner stands on a platform, and the other must catch them as they leap off into their partner’s arms. The task emphasizes trust and the importance of being there for each other. Conversation Prompt: "What is your biggest fear in relationships?" Scoring: Points are awarded based on how openly each partner shares and supports each other’s answer. Station 2: “Blindfolded Trust” Physical Task: One partner is blindfolded and must navigate an obstacle course with guidance from their partner. The sighted partner can’t touch them but must direct them solely with their voice, testing communication skills and patience. Conversation Prompt: "What’s something you want me to know about your past that would help me understand you better?" Scoring: Points are given for completion time and the depth of conversation. Station 3: “Locked Lips Puzzle” Physical Task: Partners work together to solve a puzzle while being tied together by their wrists, symbolizing the need to compromise and collaborate. Conversation Prompt: "What’s a dream or goal you haven’t shared with me yet?" Scoring: Points are based on how quickly they complete the puzzle and their willingness to share vulnerable dreams with each other. Station 4: “Heart Sync” Physical Task: Both partners have to perform a choreographed dance in sync. They must complete the moves in time with a beat that speeds up, testing their coordination and ability to stay in rhythm with each other. Conversation Prompt: "What do you see as our biggest challenge as a couple?" Scoring: Points are awarded based on timing and rhythm, as well as the thoughtfulness of their answers. Station 5: “Final Flame” Physical Task: Partners must work together to build a small fire using the provided materials. This task represents the importance of keeping the flame alive in a relationship, symbolizing commitment and cooperation. Conversation Prompt: "What are three things you love about our relationship?" Scoring: Points are awarded based on how quickly they start the fire and the heartfelt answers they give. Rules: Each station must be completed in full—both the physical task and the conversation prompt—before moving on. Each station has a judge who scores the couple based on their task completion, teamwork, and sincerity in their responses. The couple with the highest combined score wins. Winning Prize: The winning couple receives a private beachside dinner with a sunset view, complete with a cozy setup where they can continue their conversation and enjoy uninterrupted quality time together.
    Charli XCX brat Fan Scholarship
My favorite song on BRAT is “Love Me Back,” a track that stands out not only for its catchy melody but also for its raw, relatable lyrics. This song dives into the complexities of unrequited love and the vulnerability that comes with putting your heart on the line, only to be met with indifference or rejection. The honest lyrics and emotional delivery capture that painful yet universal experience of wanting someone who doesn’t feel the same way, a feeling that resonates with so many of us. What makes “Love Me Back” so powerful is how it blends vulnerability with strength. The song doesn’t shy away from the emotional weight of rejection, but it also conveys a sense of resilience. There’s a feeling of self-awareness throughout the song, as if the singer knows that wanting someone who doesn’t reciprocate isn’t healthy, yet they’re still drawn to those feelings. This balance between longing and self-recognition creates a layered emotional experience, which makes the song both heartfelt and empowering. The lyrics in “Love Me Back” are straightforward yet poignant, allowing listeners to feel the rawness of the emotions. Lines like “I’m giving you all that I have, but it’s never enough” highlight the pain of investing so much in someone who can’t or won’t return the same energy. It’s a reminder of the vulnerability that comes with love and how difficult it can be to let go of those we care about, even when it’s clear they’re not as invested. These lyrics are relatable for anyone who has ever found themselves in a one-sided relationship or felt like they were constantly giving without receiving. Musically, the song’s melody and production amplify its emotional impact. The instrumental arrangement starts soft and builds up, mirroring the intensity of feelings that often accompany unrequited love. The production choices, like the steady beat and rising crescendos, create a sense of movement and tension, as if we’re taken through the emotional highs and lows of longing and heartbreak. This gives the song a unique energy, making it both a heart-wrenching ballad and a powerful anthem. “Love Me Back” resonates with me personally because it captures a very real, human experience. The song doesn’t offer a solution or a fairytale ending; instead, it embraces the complexity of wanting something that might not be right for us. It reminds us that we all have moments of vulnerability, but that those moments don’t define us. Rather than wallowing in sadness, the song subtly hints at resilience, suggesting that even though this love may not be returned, the person singing has the strength to move forward. Overall, “Love Me Back” is a standout track on BRAT because it’s both cathartic and empowering. It captures the intensity of unrequited love while also reminding listeners of the strength in facing those feelings. For me, it’s a song that validates the pain of heartbreak but also serves as a reminder to value ourselves enough to move on, even when it’s difficult. Its blend of honest lyrics, emotional delivery, and powerful production makes it a song that stays with you long after it ends, capturing the bittersweet essence of love and resilience.

Wrestling is a physically demanding and mentally challenging sport, requiring intense focus, resilience, and endurance. Good Vibes Only Scholarship in Memory of C. Spoon
I chose to pursue a degree in psychology because I am passionate about understanding human behavior and supporting others on their mental health journeys. Through my own experiences, I’ve seen how transformative mental health support can be, and I’m inspired to provide that same support to others. Psychology allows me to explore the complexities of the human mind and, more importantly, learn how to help people navigate their challenges in a way that fosters self-understanding and resilience. My goal is to become a mental health professional who can provide effective, compassionate care that respects each individual’s unique experiences. One of the most significant areas where I believe mental health services can make an impact is within BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities. BIPOC individuals often face unique and compounding challenges when it comes to mental health. Systemic issues like racism, generational trauma, economic inequality, and limited access to healthcare create additional stressors that can deeply affect mental well-being. Historically, these communities have been underserved in mental health care, often due to barriers such as cultural stigma, lack of access, and a shortage of mental health professionals who understand their cultural contexts. Mental health services tailored to BIPOC communities can be transformative in breaking down these barriers and offering meaningful support. Culturally competent therapy acknowledges and respects a person’s background, experiences, and identity, fostering a therapeutic environment built on trust and understanding. When mental health professionals recognize the impact of racial trauma and systemic inequalities on mental health, they provide a space where BIPOC individuals feel seen and validated. This approach can reduce stigma around seeking mental health support, as individuals feel that their unique experiences are not only understood but also respected. One of my goals in studying psychology is to contribute to creating a more inclusive mental health landscape. I hope to learn both the clinical skills and the cultural awareness necessary to support diverse clients effectively. By advocating for culturally sensitive approaches, I believe we can better address mental health in BIPOC communities, creating an environment where individuals feel safe and empowered to seek help. It’s crucial to offer representation and understanding in mental health care, as this not only improves therapeutic outcomes but also demonstrates to BIPOC communities that they are valued and supported. Ultimately, my aim is to make a difference by offering mental health services that honor and embrace diversity. I want to be a part of the movement working toward equal access and inclusivity in mental health, challenging stereotypes and creating spaces where everyone, particularly BIPOC individuals, feels comfortable seeking the support they need. Through a degree in psychology, I am committed to making mental health care more compassionate, accessible, and relevant to all. I believe that by listening, learning, and advocating, I can help foster a field that values every individual’s experiences and encourages healing and growth for all communities.
    Ella's Gift
My journey with mental health and substance abuse has been challenging, but it has also been transformative, teaching me resilience and revealing my commitment to building a meaningful life. Reflecting on this journey, I’ve experienced both the struggles and victories that have shaped my growth, helping me better understand my mental health, personal strengths, and dedication to pursuing an education that will allow me to make a difference. Growing up, I struggled with anxiety and feelings of isolation. For a long time, I didn’t fully understand what I was experiencing, which led me to cope in ways that weren’t always healthy. During my teenage years, I turned to substances as an escape from overwhelming emotions, trying to numb the stress and pressure I felt both socially and academically. While it provided a temporary relief, it quickly became a destructive cycle that affected my relationships, my motivation, and my sense of self-worth. Reaching a breaking point, I realized that I needed to make a change. With the support of my family and a counselor, I began to explore the roots of my anxiety and the impact that substance use had on my life. This journey into self-reflection was uncomfortable at times, as it forced me to confront habits and insecurities that I had buried. However, it also marked the beginning of my personal growth. By learning to cope with stress in healthier ways and committing to sobriety, I began to rediscover parts of myself that I had lost during those difficult years. One of the biggest lessons I learned was the importance of self-compassion. In the past, I was often my own harshest critic, quick to judge myself for my mistakes and struggles. Through therapy and personal work, I came to understand that recovery is not linear and that setbacks are a natural part of the journey. This mindset shift allowed me to forgive myself and approach each day with a fresh perspective. Now, instead of dwelling on past mistakes, I focus on celebrating the progress I’ve made, no matter how small. This experience has also inspired me to set clear educational and career goals. Having gained a deep appreciation for mental health support and recovery, I am currently pursuing a degree in psychology. My goal is to become a mental health professional, specifically working with youth who may be experiencing similar struggles with anxiety or substance use. I want to use my experiences to help others feel understood and supported, creating a safe space where they can confront their challenges without fear of judgment. Education has become a path not just for personal advancement, but for giving back to others in a meaningful way. To continue managing my recovery, I have developed a plan that includes both structured routines and flexible strategies that adapt to my daily needs. Therapy has remained an essential part of my recovery, providing a safe space to work through issues as they arise and keep myself accountable. Regular sessions with a counselor help me stay grounded, providing guidance and tools that are essential for maintaining my mental health. I also attend group meetings where I connect with others who are on similar journeys, gaining strength from their experiences and learning from their insights. In addition to therapy and support groups, I’ve developed personal practices that help me maintain balance. Exercise has become an important part of my routine, serving as both a stress reliever and a way to stay focused. I make time for mindfulness practices, such as meditation and journaling, which allow me to reflect on my progress and maintain a positive mindset. These activities help me stay connected to my goals, providing a daily reminder of the progress I’ve made and the future I am working toward. Looking forward, I am committed to continuing this journey with resilience and compassion. While I know that challenges may arise, I feel better equipped than ever to face them. My experiences with mental health and substance abuse have given me a strong foundation of empathy, resilience, and purpose, which I plan to bring into my studies and future career. Through education, self-care, and a dedication to growth, I aim to build a life where I can support others on their journeys and contribute positively to the field of mental health. In sharing my story, I hope to encourage others who may be struggling to seek help and find their path toward recovery. Managing mental health and substance abuse has been a challenging journey, but one that has taught me invaluable lessons about strength, self-compassion, and the importance of staying connected to my goals. This experience has not only shaped who I am today but has also given me a clear vision of how I want to make an impact on others. Thank you.
    GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
A lyric from Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS that resonates with my teenage experience is from the song “pretty isn’t pretty”: “No amount of makeup can make me feel okay.” This line captures the struggle many teens face with self-image and the relentless pressure to look a certain way to feel accepted or valued. Growing up in a world where social media and beauty standards constantly showcase ideals of perfection, it’s easy to feel as though our worth depends on how we look. Rodrigo’s lyric speaks to the profound realization that no matter how much we try to alter our appearance, true confidence and self-acceptance come from within, not from outward changes. In adolescence, self-image can feel fragile, as we are often navigating feelings of self-doubt and uncertainty about who we are. The lyric reflects a universal teenage experience—the desire to be seen and accepted, mixed with the frustration of feeling that no matter how much effort we put into our appearance, it doesn’t truly fulfill us. Rodrigo captures the futility of seeking validation through looks alone, highlighting a key aspect of teenage life: grappling with the idea that self-worth is rooted much deeper than outward appearance. The lyric, “No amount of makeup can make me feel okay,” reflects the internal battle many teens face. It’s a reminder that trying to meet society’s beauty standards is exhausting and often leaves us feeling empty. The pursuit of perfection—trying to look “pretty enough” by applying makeup, following trends, or even filtering photos—is often just a way of masking insecurities. Rodrigo’s line captures the frustration of realizing that even when we meet these standards, they don’t bring lasting happiness or peace. The lyric is an honest acknowledgment that no external change can make up for a lack of self-acceptance, and it’s a sentiment that resonates with anyone who’s ever felt pressure to change to fit in. This lyric also taps into the growing self-awareness that many teens experience as they start to question societal norms. Rodrigo’s words highlight the importance of recognizing and rejecting unrealistic expectations that tell us we need to be “prettier” or “better” to feel good about ourselves. In a culture that often equates beauty with worth, Rodrigo’s message is a reminder to look beyond the surface and focus on our inner qualities. It’s about choosing authenticity over a curated image and learning to value ourselves for who we truly are. For teens, “pretty isn’t pretty” becomes an empowering anthem for self-acceptance. It encourages us to redefine beauty in our own terms and to focus on aspects of ourselves that extend beyond appearance, like kindness, creativity, and resilience. Rodrigo’s words urge us to seek self-worth in places that aren’t tied to looks, helping us to build confidence from within rather than from validation from others. Ultimately, “No amount of makeup can make me feel okay” is a powerful reminder that true happiness and self-confidence come from accepting who we are, not from chasing a perfect image. Rodrigo’s lyric resonates because it validates the pressure and insecurities that many experience, while also empowering us to reject those standards and embrace self-love. By highlighting the limitations of superficial fixes, Rodrigo offers a message that’s both relatable and inspiring for teens. She encourages us to look inward for fulfillment, reminding us that we are more than how we look—and that is something worth celebrating. Thank you.
    Ken Landry Memorial Scholarship
My athletic journey has been a diverse and transformative one, deeply shaping who I am today. From the graceful discipline of ballet to the strength and resilience required in gymnastics, and the mental and physical rigor of jiu-jitsu, each sport has left its unique mark on me. These practices have taught me not only physical skills but also invaluable life lessons that I carry with me every day. Starting as a ballerina, I learned the value of poise, precision, and dedication. Ballet demands grace under pressure, with a strong focus on form and technique, often pushing you to the edge of your physical limits. Countless hours of practice taught me the importance of patience and commitment, as progress doesn’t come overnight. Ballet taught me to embrace the process, working through discomfort and frustration to reach new levels of mastery. These lessons in discipline and persistence have shaped me profoundly, helping me understand that success requires hard work and consistency, both in sports and in life. In gymnastics, I found a different set of challenges and rewards. Gymnastics requires an extraordinary level of physical strength and mental courage. The sport taught me to face fear head-on, especially when attempting new moves or routines. The intense focus required in gymnastics helped me develop mental resilience, as each routine demands complete dedication in the moment. There’s no room for doubt or hesitation. This mentality of “going all-in” has extended beyond the gym; it has encouraged me to face other challenges with the same commitment and courage. The sport also showed me the importance of teamwork and encouragement, as teammates constantly support and cheer each other on. The camaraderie built during training and competitions has taught me the value of uplifting those around me, an attitude I bring to all areas of my life. My journey with jiu-jitsu added yet another layer to my development. Jiu-jitsu is as much a mental discipline as it is a physical one. Learning various techniques, moves, and counters in real-time requires mental agility and strategic thinking. Jiu-jitsu has taught me how to approach challenges from multiple angles, finding creative solutions under pressure. This ability to adapt has been invaluable, helping me stay calm and focused even in difficult situations. It has also given me a deeper sense of humility and respect, as every opponent presents a new learning opportunity, showing me that growth often comes from vulnerability and learning from others. Through these athletic experiences, I’ve become more resilient, disciplined, and compassionate. I believe I can make an impact on others by sharing these lessons. As someone who has faced challenges and overcome self-doubt in each of these sports, I understand the importance of encouragement and support. I hope to inspire others, especially young people, to embrace their own journeys, recognizing that growth comes from hard work, perseverance, and a willingness to face fears. Whether through mentoring, coaching, or simply sharing my story, I aim to help others see that each challenge is an opportunity for personal development. Ultimately, my athletic journey has taught me that success is not only about winning but about growth, resilience, and lifting others up along the way. I’m committed to using these experiences to encourage others, showing them that they, too, can overcome obstacles, push their limits, and achieve more than they ever thought possible. Thank you.
    Pro-Life Advocates Scholarship
My pro-life position is deeply influenced by personal experiences and values of empathy, respect, and compassion. From a young age, I was raised to see the inherent worth and dignity in all people, regardless of their stage of life. Witnessing the joy and love within my own family, especially when welcoming new members, has cemented my belief in the sanctity of life from its earliest moments. This perspective was reinforced by seeing friends and loved ones navigate challenging circumstances with the support of their community, showing me how valuable a strong support system can be. I came to see that every life, no matter how small, has a profound purpose and deserves protection and dignity. To advocate for the dignity of all human beings, especially the unborn, I’ve chosen to take a compassionate and proactive approach in my community. I volunteer with local organizations that provide assistance to expectant mothers and families in need. Through this work, I’ve witnessed firsthand the impact of offering practical support—be it in the form of counseling, access to medical resources, or financial assistance. Many women facing crisis pregnancies feel isolated or underprepared, and being able to provide them with options and a supportive environment can make a meaningful difference in their lives. It’s my hope that by helping create a foundation of support, I can encourage choices that affirm life, by making it easier and more accessible for women to feel empowered in their decisions. Another important aspect of my commitment to the pro-life cause is education and advocacy. I believe that fostering open, respectful conversations about the value of life is essential to creating a compassionate society that respects all stages of development. I support pro-life organizations that focus on educating young people about the importance of valuing human life. Through these platforms, I participate in events, workshops, and community discussions that aim to provide information about fetal development, the emotional and psychological effects of abortion, and the importance of offering resources for women and families in difficult situations. My hope is that by fostering understanding, more people will see the intrinsic value in life and the importance of protecting it from the earliest stages. I also strive to promote a culture of respect and care for all lives by advocating for policies that provide support for families in need, including affordable healthcare, family leave, and childcare resources. I recognize that advocating for life extends beyond birth and includes creating conditions where every child and family has the opportunity to thrive. This belief fuels my support for social programs that uplift families and reduce the economic pressures that often play a role in crisis pregnancies. I see this approach as part of a broader commitment to respect life at all stages, not only the unborn but also the families who will nurture them. Through these actions, I hope to contribute to a culture that recognizes and respects the dignity of all people, especially the vulnerable and voiceless. My experiences have shown me that the smallest acts of compassion can make a powerful impact, and my goal is to be a part of that change by supporting others and advocating for a society that values life in all its forms.
    TLau "Love Fiercely" Scholarship
One of the most unforgettable outdoor experiences of my life happened during a family trip to Aruba. We’d decided to venture off the beaten path, and my dad rented this rugged car with no doors, which felt like a portal to freedom and adventure. My mom was up front in the passenger seat, looking both thrilled and a little cautious, while my twin brother and I shared the back. Sitting so openly in that car, I felt like we were completely immersed in the island's landscape and energy, connected to the wind and sun in a way that few experiences allow. As we crossed from the bustling side of Aruba to the island’s wild, untouched coast, the scenery shifted in ways that took my breath away. The usual postcard-perfect beaches gave way to a much more rugged terrain, where the land was covered in coarse, earthy tones. Jagged rocks and towering cacti dotted the landscape, breaking up the vastness of the desert-like expanse. The sky was a brilliant, almost surreal shade of blue, and in the distance, the ocean sparkled in contrast to the muted hues of the land. The untouched nature of this side of the island felt raw and ancient, as if it had existed unchanged for centuries. There was an almost sacred quality to it, like we were stepping back in time or crossing into another world. As my dad pressed down on the gas pedal, hitting around 60 mph, and the wind roared around us in the open car. The thrill of it was electrifying, as if the world around us was part of some vast, exhilarating secret that only we were experiencing in that moment. My mom held onto her seat with a mix of excitement and a bit of worry, while my brother and I were wide-eyed, taking in every detail of the scenery as it flew by. All the while, the song “More Than a Woman” played, the music blending with the sound of the wind and the hum of the engine. I could feel the beat pulsing in my chest as I looked out over the open landscape, my senses fully engaged by the sights, sounds, and sheer beauty of it all. There was something magical about that song in that moment, as if it captured the rhythm of our adventure perfectly. I felt completely alive, completely present, and incredibly grateful for everything—my family, this beautiful world, and the sense of freedom that filled the air. Reflecting on that experience, it was a lesson in gratitude and presence, two values that have continued to shape my life. That moment on the other side of Aruba wasn’t about reaching a destination; it was about feeling connected to the journey, with all of its rawness and beauty. There were no distractions, no pressures from the outside world—just a pure sense of awe and appreciation. Since that trip, I’ve tried to carry that feeling into my everyday life by finding gratitude in the small, simple moments, especially during times when I might otherwise feel stressed or overwhelmed. Life, I realized, doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful, and beauty can be found in the least expected places, as long as I stay open to it. Whenever I face challenges or get too caught up in routine, I think back to that ride across Aruba, with the wind whipping around us and the song in my ears. It reminds me to let go of things that don’t matter, to focus on the present, and to appreciate the journey itself instead of worrying about the destination.
    Wicked Fan Scholarship
The Wicked movie adaptation has a lot to live up to given the musical’s iconic status, and it’s exciting to think about how it could add new layers to this already complex story. While the stage show has its limitations, especially in terms of special effects, the movie can open up the world of Oz, allowing for visually immersive scenes that capture the vastness and fantasy of this magical realm. It will be interesting to see how the filmmakers reimagine Elphaba’s journey, from her life at Shiz University to her ultimate stand against the Wizard, with modern cinematic techniques. One of the most compelling aspects of Wicked on stage is the dynamic between Elphaba and Glinda, so the success of the movie will largely depend on how well the actors portray this relationship. The beauty of Wicked lies in its layered characters and the tension between the two women, who are initially rivals but develop a deep friendship. I hope the movie captures this nuance and doesn’t shy away from showing both the flaws and strengths in each character. Watching the characters evolve emotionally on the big screen could bring even more depth to their friendship, especially since a movie can use close-ups and subtle expressions that are harder to convey in a theater setting. Another point of interest is how the movie will interpret the famous songs, like “Defying Gravity” and “For Good.” In the theater, these numbers are show-stoppers because of the live energy and spectacle. Translating that magic to film will be a challenge, but there’s also potential for the movie to use these songs more narratively, weaving them into scenes in a way that feels more grounded in the story’s emotional beats. For example, “Defying Gravity” could be filmed to show Elphaba’s resolve and the isolation she feels rather than focusing solely on visual spectacle. Ultimately, I think the Wicked movie has the opportunity to bring fresh perspectives to this beloved story. The film could delve deeper into the social issues hinted at in the musical, like systemic injustice and societal prejudice, making it more relevant to modern audiences. If the adaptation can stay true to the spirit of the musical while adding new dimensions, it could be a powerful reimagining that makes Wicked accessible and meaningful to an even wider audience. I chose psychology because I am deeply interested in understanding the complexities of the human mind, emotions, and behaviors, especially as they relate to mental health and well-being. Growing up in a family that immigrated from Mexico, I witnessed the emotional struggles that can arise from cultural transitions and the challenges of balancing new experiences with traditional values. I have also faced personal mental health challenges, which have driven me to take my mental health seriously and make it a priority. This combination of family background and personal experience inspired me to pursue psychology to help others navigate their own emotional and psychological challenges. My ultimate goal is to become a psychiatrist, a career path that combines my interest in psychology with my desire to provide medical and therapeutic support. I hope to specialize in supporting immigrant and marginalized communities because I know firsthand how essential it is to have mental health professionals who understand cultural backgrounds and unique stressors. I also aim to contribute to reducing the stigma around mental health within these communities by educating individuals and families about mental well-being and the importance of seeking help when needed. My experience in academia has also motivated me to work on the clinical side of psychology. During my studies, I have been exposed to research on mental well-being, screen time, and its impact, as well as specific neuropsychological topics, like Alzheimer’s Disease and memory recall. These research topics have shown me how mental health is influenced by both biological and environmental factors. By understanding these complex dynamics, I hope to develop a well-rounded approach to psychiatry, balancing medical treatments with empathy, cultural sensitivity, and awareness of social factors. Furthermore, I am actively working to develop strong research and clinical skills that will support my aspirations. My current sociology thesis and psychology classes, such as PSY 369, have provided me with a foundation for examining complex social issues and psychological theories. I believe these experiences will make me a more informed and compassionate psychiatrist, enabling me to contribute meaningfully to my field and to the communities I aim to serve. Thank you.

Having a foreign-born parent has profoundly impacted my academic experience and shaped my aspirations in unique and meaningful ways. Growing up in a family with roots outside of the United States has exposed me to a mix of cultures, values, and perspectives, which have influenced my academic outlook and career goals. This experience has fostered resilience, adaptability, and a strong sense of purpose in my academic journey. First, the experience of navigating two cultures has instilled in me a unique perspective on education. My parent’s background often emphasizes the value of hard work, resilience, and the pursuit of opportunities that they, perhaps, did not have. This instilled in me an inherent respect for education and its power to provide options and security. Observing the sacrifices they made for our family to have access to quality education has motivated me to excel academically. Education was never viewed as a mere requirement but rather as an opportunity—a privilege that comes with responsibility. This perspective has pushed me to remain disciplined and has given me a sense of purpose, which sometimes feels like a generational mission to honor their journey. Another significant influence from having a foreign-born parent is the sense of responsibility that often accompanies being a first-generation student. As the child of an immigrant, I recognize the importance of bridging the gap between cultures and understanding the world from a broader, global perspective. I frequently find myself balancing both identities—remaining connected to my parent’s cultural values while adapting to those of my peers and the academic community. This balancing act has made me more adaptable and open-minded, skills that have proven valuable in collaborative academic settings. For instance, group projects and discussions often require understanding multiple viewpoints, a skill that I believe has been nurtured by my upbringing. The linguistic aspect of my background also plays a key role in my academic journey. Growing up in a bilingual household has given me an appreciation for language and communication, which I now realize is invaluable in academia. Not only does this ability broaden my understanding of different perspectives, but it has also improved my analytical and communication skills. Bilingualism has allowed me to make connections between concepts and articulate my thoughts with clarity, a skill that I have found useful in writing papers and engaging in class discussions. It has also fueled my interest in psychology and linguistics, fields that explore how language shapes identity and cognition, as these subjects resonate with my personal experiences of language as a tool for both understanding and self-expression. In terms of career goals, my family background has been a source of inspiration for pursuing a career that makes a difference in people’s lives. Observing my parent’s journey and the challenges they faced as a newcomer in the United States has made me empathetic toward others facing similar challenges. This empathy has driven me toward a career in psychology and psychiatry, where I hope to provide support to individuals navigating complex cultural identities and mental health struggles. I believe that my unique perspective as a child of an immigrant will allow me to offer a compassionate and nuanced approach to mental health, particularly for clients from diverse backgrounds who may feel misunderstood or marginalized. Furthermore, I hope to use my career as a platform to advocate for more inclusive mental health care, an area where cultural sensitivity is crucial. Having a foreign-born parent has also taught me the importance of perseverance. Thank you.

Mental health is an essential part of my life as a student because it affects my ability to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. With the constant pressures of school, work, and future career planning, maintaining a healthy mindset is vital for managing stress, staying motivated, and achieving my goals. As someone who navigates a mood disorder, I’ve learned firsthand the importance of prioritizing mental health to stay balanced. When I’m mentally well, I can engage fully with my studies, interact meaningfully with peers, and handle the demands of college life. Conversely, when I neglect my mental well-being, even basic tasks can feel overwhelming, making it difficult to reach my full potential. For me, taking medication and engaging in regular exercise are critical aspects of maintaining my mental health. I’ve seen a significant improvement in my daily functioning through these methods, and they enable me to remain more focused, grounded, and motivated. Simple habits like a daily walk or workout make a difference in managing stress and keeping my mood balanced. This approach has taught me that mental health care doesn’t have to be complicated; small, consistent actions can be highly effective. Additionally, staying connected with mental health resources, like counseling services and supportive groups on campus, has allowed me to address challenges early before they grow. Mental health care, therefore, is both preventive and responsive, helping me stay on track and pursue my aspirations. Advocating for mental health is something I feel strongly about. While I work on my well-being, I also try to support others in my community to do the same. One way I advocate for mental health is by being open about my experiences. By sharing what I go through with my friends, family, and even classmates, I hope to normalize conversations around mental health and create an environment where people feel safe to talk about their struggles. Discussing topics like anxiety, depression, and self-care has a ripple effect—it encourages others to feel less isolated and more understood. I’ve found that honesty about mental health helps reduce stigma, making it easier for those around me to seek help when needed. At my school, I’m involved in the psychology club, which is an excellent platform for mental health advocacy. Through club activities, we address mental health topics and create awareness about various mental health resources on campus. For instance, we organize talks, workshops, and resource fairs to make information about mental health accessible to students. By connecting peers with the Center for Prevention and Outreach, we guide students to professional support tailored to their needs, including therapy, crisis intervention, and wellness workshops. In my community, I encourage friends and family to be proactive about their mental health, from exploring coping strategies to seeking professional help. By openly discussing mental health and advocating for resources, I hope to foster an environment that encourages mental well-being as a priority. My goal is to break down barriers to support and create a community where everyone feels they can reach out without fear of judgment. In my experience, mental health care is an ongoing journey that requires consistency and courage, but it can be transformative. Through my actions, I hope to support not only my own journey but also to inspire others to take that first step toward mental wellness.

Here’s a paragraph from Meditations by Marcus Aurelius: “You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength. The mind adapts and converts to its own purposes the obstacle to our acting. The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” Essay- In Meditations, Marcus Aurelius offers a radical philosophy on resilience, positing that human strength lies in the power of perception and adaptive thought, not in control over external circumstances. Aurelius challenges his readers to recognize that obstacles are not merely impediments to be circumvented but are, in fact, opportunities for the mind to grow. This insight rests on the notion that obstacles, rather than hindrances, are transformative forces that reveal the path forward. At the core of Aurelius's teaching is the Stoic belief that suffering and setbacks are a necessary part of the human experience and, importantly, a source of personal growth. The phrase "what stands in the way becomes the way" underscores this idea. By interpreting obstacles as an essential part of one's journey, Aurelius suggests that they should not be resisted or lamented. Instead, these challenges become a forge for strengthening the mind, testing one’s ability to reshape purpose and vision. Through this mental alchemy, setbacks cease to be burdens and become sources of strength and clarity. Thus, Aurelius’s statement is a call to an internal restructuring of values—a reorientation away from relying on external events to bring happiness or stability. The passage ultimately reflects an empowering Stoic tenet: adversity is an irremovable aspect of existence, yet it is within human power to determine its impact. The true “way,” Aurelius implies, is not free of barriers; it is a path created precisely by engaging and transforming them. In Meditations, Marcus Aurelius offers not merely advice but a deeply transformative philosophy that shifts the focus of human agency inward. By asserting, “You have power over your mind—not outside events,” Aurelius addresses one of the most critical aspects of Stoic thought: the importance of internal over external control. This distinction serves as the bedrock for Stoic resilience, which holds that inner stability is the only achievable and worthwhile form of control. In Aurelius’s view, attempting to dictate or alter external circumstances is an exercise in futility and ultimately a source of suffering. Instead, true strength and freedom emerge from mastering one’s thoughts and reactions to those circumstances, creating a life anchored in internal stability rather than the turbulence of the external world. Aurelius’s claim that “the impediment to action advances action” is not a paradox but rather an invitation to see obstacles as teachers, shaping the journey and pushing one toward self-knowledge. This perspective draws from the Stoic belief that the essence of human character is revealed through hardship. The path to wisdom and self-mastery requires that individuals not only endure but actively use challenges to cultivate resilience and virtue. By internalizing the belief that obstacles have inherent value, Aurelius empowers his readers to confront difficulties with a mindset that not only accepts but actively seeks to learn from adversity. This teaching stands in stark contrast to modern ideas that often equate happiness with the elimination of discomfort or the pursuit of ease. In the context of Stoicism, Aurelius proposes that a life oriented toward comfort or external validation is ultimately fragile because it is built on elements outside one’s control. Conversely, the Stoic life is one of adaptability and strength, grounded in a continual process of transforming one’s relationship with hardships. For Aurelius, obstacles and setbacks provide not a break from life’s flow but a meaningful part of it, essential to the individual’s growth and self-discovery. Each impediment, then, is not merely a test but a necessary component of personal evolution, forcing individuals to redefine their goals, perspectives, and even desires in ways that align with inner values rather than external outcomes. The phrase “what stands in the way becomes the way” crystallizes Aurelius’s stance on purposeful living. It conveys that difficulties, far from being exceptions to the rule of life, are life itself. This philosophy encourages readers to integrate adversity into their life path, seeing each challenge as an integral part of their purpose. To move through life effectively, Aurelius suggests, one must be willing to adapt one’s mental framework, using obstacles as stepping stones rather than obstructions. This transformative approach to hardship fosters a profound sense of agency and independence, empowering individuals to shape their life’s meaning not by evading obstacles but by embracing and overcoming them. The practical implications of this mindset are profound. For instance, in modern contexts, individuals often seek control over situations to maintain a sense of stability. Yet, by striving for external control, they risk becoming dependent on circumstances that are inherently unstable and subject to change. Aurelius’s philosophy offers a way to build stability from within, encouraging readers to view life’s unpredictability not as a source of anxiety but as a call to develop internal resources of adaptability and strength. This way of thinking can transform one’s approach to daily frustrations, unexpected losses, and personal failures, enabling a life rooted in resilience and self-reliance rather than dependence on external validation or outcomes. Furthermore, Aurelius’s emphasis on perception as a tool of empowerment implies that the way we interpret events holds more influence over our well-being than the events themselves. This teaching aligns with the psychological concept of cognitive reframing, which involves changing one’s interpretation of a situation to shift emotional impact. In this sense, Aurelius’s words prefigure modern psychological approaches that recognize the profound effect of perception on emotional resilience. By asserting control over our interpretations, we claim a form of freedom that external conditions cannot compromise. In conclusion, Marcus Aurelius’s teachings in Meditations offer a guide to an empowered, purpose-driven life that sees challenges not as deviations from the path but as the path itself. His philosophy reframes hardship as a crucible for self-mastery and wisdom, encouraging individuals to cultivate a mindset that not only withstands but thrives on adversity. Aurelius’s words resonate across centuries because they remind us of a timeless truth: the strength we seek lies not in controlling the world around us but in shaping our minds to navigate it.

Struggling with a mood disorder has made it essential for me to prioritize my mental health. This challenge requires constant attention, and I’ve come to understand that taking care of my mental well-being is crucial for success in both my academic and personal life. Over time, I’ve developed a routine that helps me manage my mood disorder and maintain a sense of balance, allowing me to navigate the demands of school and life more effectively. One of the primary ways I manage my mood disorder is through medication prescribed by my doctor. This medication helps stabilize my mood, making it possible for me to function more consistently throughout the day. Without it, I would struggle to maintain the focus and energy needed for my studies, as well as the emotional stability required to handle daily challenges. Taking medication is a critical part of my routine, and it serves as the foundation for the other strategies I use to support my mental health. In addition to medication, engaging in activities outside of school has been crucial for maintaining my mental well-being. One of the most effective ways I manage stress and improve my mood is through regular exercise. Working out has become a vital part of my daily life, not just for physical fitness but for mental health as well. Whether I’m going for a run, lifting weights, or practicing yoga, exercise provides a healthy outlet for the stress that can build up from school and other responsibilities. It’s a time when I can clear my mind, focus on my body, and experience the positive effects of physical activity, such as increased energy and a better mood. Exercise also gives me a sense of accomplishment and control, which is particularly important when managing a mood disorder. There are days when it feels difficult to get started, but I’ve learned that even a short workout can make a significant difference in how I feel. It’s a way to take charge of my well-being and create a positive routine that supports my mental health. Beyond exercise, I’ve found that taking breaks from schoolwork to engage in hobbies and activities I enjoy is essential for maintaining a healthy balance. These activities, whether it’s spending time outdoors, reading a good book, or listening to music, provide much-needed relaxation and a mental reset. They allow me to step away from the pressures of academic life and focus on what brings me joy. This balance between work and leisure is crucial in managing my mood disorder, as it prevents burnout and helps me approach my studies with a refreshed and positive mindset. Overall, living with a mood disorder has taught me the importance of prioritizing my mental health in every aspect of my life. By taking medication, committing to regular exercise, and making time for self-care activities, I’m able to manage the challenges that come with my condition and continue to pursue my academic and personal goals. These strategies not only support my mental health but also help me build resilience and maintain a sense of balance, which is key to thriving in both school and life. Thank you!
    Pushing Our Scholars Forward
When I chose to enroll in the psychology program at Stony Brook University, I did so with a clear vision of what I wanted to achieve, both personally and professionally. My decision was driven by a deep-seated passion for understanding human behavior, a commitment to making a difference in the mental health field, and a desire to contribute positively to society. Alongside my studies, I have also been working, an experience that has significantly shaped my academic journey and personal growth. The decision to pursue a degree in psychology stemmed from my long-standing fascination with the intricacies of the human mind. From a young age, I found myself intrigued by the ways in which people think, feel, and behave. This curiosity led me to explore various psychological theories and concepts even before I began my formal education in the field. Enrolling in the psychology program was a natural progression of this interest, as it provided me with the opportunity to search deeper into the science of human behavior. Beyond personal interest, my commitment to the field of mental health was a significant factor in my decision to study psychology. The increasing prevalence of mental health issues in society, coupled with the stigma that often surrounds them, motivated me to become part of the solution. I chose this program because I want to play a role in addressing these challenges, particularly by helping individuals who struggle with mental illness. Understanding the complexities of the mind and developing strategies to improve mental well-being is not only a career goal but a personal mission. Through research, I hope to contribute to the discovery of more effective and accessible treatment options, ultimately enhancing the quality of mental health care available to individuals across different communities. I am committed to using my education to support vulnerable populations, such as those with severe mental illnesses or those who lack access to adequate mental health care. Working in underserved communities is a priority for me, as I believe that everyone deserves access to the mental health support they need. There have been times when the workload from both my job and school seemed overwhelming, but these experiences have strengthened my ability to persevere under pressure. I have learned to navigate challenges with a positive mindset, knowing that each obstacle is an opportunity to grow and improve. My Journey of Self-Discovery My name is Brianna Matias, and my journey has been anything but conventional. Growing up in the Jehovah’s Witnesses community, my life was defined by strict adherence to religious doctrines and a very structured way of living. But as I ventured into my college years at Stony Brook University, my worldview began to shift, leading me to reevaluate my place within the faith I had always known. Reasons for Leaving The seeds of my doubt were sown during my early studies in psychology. As I delved into the subject, I encountered new perspectives on human behavior and spirituality that began to challenge the rigid teachings I had grown up with. The more I learned, the more I realized that there were significant discrepancies between my personal beliefs and the doctrines of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. The structure that once felt comforting started to feel restrictive. I longed for more autonomy in my personal decisions and the freedom to explore my own values without the constant pressure to conform. The emotional toll of questioning my faith was immense. I felt increasingly isolated and scrutinized, especially when I began to voice my doubts. The potential for being shunned by my community added another layer of stress, making my decision to leave even more complex. The conflict between my desire for personal freedom and the fear of losing my community was overwhelming. Personal Growth Leaving the Jehovah’s Witnesses was a turning point for me, marking the beginning of a profound journey toward self-discovery and personal growth. I embraced the freedom to explore my own beliefs and values, which allowed me to pursue interests and passions that had been on hold. This newfound independence enabled me to build a life centered around my evolving understanding of spirituality and ethics, influenced by both my academic studies and personal experiences. As I explored new activities, joined clubs, and connected with diverse people at university, my perspective broadened significantly. These experiences enriched my life and helped me develop a stronger sense of self. I learned to navigate uncertainty with resilience and adaptability, and I gained a deeper understanding of who I am and what I want from life. Support Systems Throughout this transformative period, I relied heavily on my support systems. My friends and family were incredibly supportive, offering understanding and encouragement as I navigated the complexities of leaving my religious community. Their acceptance was crucial in helping me manage feelings of isolation and uncertainty. I also sought out support groups of individuals who had experienced similar transitions. These groups provided me with a sense of solidarity and practical advice, helping me navigate my new life and build connections outside of my former faith. The shared experiences and mutual understanding within these communities were a valuable source of strength. Professional counseling played a significant role in my personal growth. Therapy gave me a safe space to process my emotions, develop coping strategies, and work through the trauma associated with leaving the Jehovah’s Witnesses. My therapist’s guidance helped me build a positive outlook and navigate the complexities of my transition. Additionally, engaging in new social and academic activities at Stony Brook University helped me create a supportive network. By joining clubs, exploring hobbies, and pursuing new interests, I found a sense of belonging and purpose outside of my former religious framework. My journey from my upbringing in the Jehovah’s Witnesses to my current path as a psychology major reflects a profound process of self-discovery and growth. My experiences have shaped me into a more resilient and adaptable individual, with a deeper understanding of my own beliefs and values. Supported by friends, family, professional guidance, and new communities, I continue to build a fulfilling life centered around my evolving understanding of myself and the world around me.

Living with bipolar disorder has been a significant part of my life, shaping my experiences and influencing the person I’m becoming. It’s been a challenging journey, filled with ups and downs, but it has also been a path of growth and self-discovery. The constant fluctuations between mania and depression have impacted my academics, relationships, and overall outlook on life, but they’ve also taught me a lot about resilience and empathy. I first started noticing something was off in high school. There were times when I felt invincible, like I could do anything. I would stay up all night working on projects, brainstorming new ideas, and making big plans for my future. But then, out of nowhere, I’d crash. Suddenly, all that energy would disappear, leaving me exhausted and unable to do even the simplest tasks. I’d isolate myself, avoiding friends and family because I felt so overwhelmed and lost. At the time, I didn’t understand what was happening—I just knew that something wasn’t right. When I got to college, things got more intense. The new environment, with all its demands and pressures, seemed to amplify the cycles I was going through. During my manic phases, I’d load up on classes, join clubs, and volunteer for everything, convinced that I could handle it all. But when the depressive episodes hit, it was like everything came crashing down. I couldn’t focus on my work, my grades started slipping, and I began skipping classes because I just didn’t have the energy to keep up. It felt like I was constantly fighting against myself, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t break the cycle. Things hit a low point during my sophomore year. I had been riding a high for a while, excelling in my classes and feeling on top of the world, but then the depression took over. I started falling behind in my work, missed important deadlines, and withdrew from social activities. I felt like I was letting everyone down, especially myself. It was during this time that I finally reached out for help. With the support of my family and a therapist, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Getting that diagnosis was a huge relief—it gave me a name for what I’d been experiencing and a path forward. Since then, managing bipolar disorder has been a daily challenge, but it’s also been an opportunity to learn and grow. I’ve had to become more aware of my mental health, learning to recognize the signs of an impending episode and take steps to manage it before it spirals out of control. Therapy and medication have been crucial, but so has prioritizing self-care and setting boundaries. I’ve had to be honest with myself about what I can handle and learn to say no when necessary. This experience has also deepened my empathy for others who are going through similar struggles. I know how isolating it can feel, and I want to be there for others in the way that people have been there for me. Bipolar disorder has also shaped my goals and aspirations. My experiences have inspired me to pursue a career in psychiatry, where I hope to help others navigate their own mental health challenges. I want to use what I’ve learned to make a difference, to show others that they’re not alone, and to provide them with the support and understanding that I’ve found so crucial in my own journey. In many ways, living with bipolar disorder has given me a unique perspective on life. It’s taught me about resilience, empathy, and the importance of self-awareness. I’ve learned that while I can’t always control the challenges I face, I can control how I respond to them. My journey with bipolar disorder is ongoing, but it has shaped me into a stronger, more compassionate person, and it continues to guide me as I work towards my goals.
