My name is Brianna, I am soon to graduate from one of the top historically black universities, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. I have always dedicated myself to my academic progress and strive to achieve many goals, one of my biggest achievements has been starting my own hair-styling business and training to become a professional. During my college experience, I was attacked by an individual who was previously an associate of mine. The event had caused a tremendous amount of trauma and mental strain. My experience with mental health challenges has profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world, especially in the context of the lack of support I've received from my school. Despite facing the emotional aftermath of being attacked and forced to relocate, I've remained dedicated to my academic pursuits, prioritizing my education amidst adversity. However, the school's failure to support me both mentally and financially has added an additional layer of strain to my journey. The lack of mental support from the school has exacerbated the challenges I've faced, leaving me feeling isolated and overwhelmed. Additionally, the financial burden of having to navigate these challenges on my own has added stress and uncertainty to an already difficult situation. Despite these obstacles, I've remained determined to persevere and succeed academically. In terms of relationships, my experience has led to both feelings of isolation, loss of friends; stemming from trust issues and traumatic responses and deeper connections with those who support me. I've learned to trust and rely on those who stand by me during difficult times, while also recognizing the importance of seeking support when needed. This has fostered a greater appreciation for the individuals in my life who offer understanding and empathy, particularly in the absence of support from the school. Furthermore, my experience has broadened my understanding of the world by exposing the shortcomings in how institutions address mental health. It has highlighted the need for greater awareness and resources to support individuals navigating similar struggles. This realization has deepened my empathy for others facing adversity and strengthened my commitment to advocating for change on a broader scale. Overall, my journey with mental health challenges, compounded by the lack of support from my school, has shaped me into a more resilient, compassionate, and determined individual. It has fueled my drive to succeed academically while also instilling a sense of purpose in advocating for systemic change and supporting others facing similar struggles. In addition to navigating academic challenges, I've also found success in my hair styling business, further illustrating my ability to persevere amidst adversity. Despite the strain of managing both academic responsibilities and entrepreneurial pursuits, I've maintained a steadfast commitment to excellence in both realms. My ability to balance the demands of my business with academic rigor speaks to my determination and time management skills. Through dedication and hard work, I've achieved success in my hair styling endeavors while simultaneously excelling in my academic pursuits, demonstrating my resilience and capacity to thrive in the face of adversity.
