I am so grateful to have been raised in a city like New York, where I have the chance to experience and taste a myriad of art forms from a multitude of people, which is part of the reason why it would be a dream and honor to attend The Juilliard School’s Dance Division after high school. And I am so humbled and excited to say that I have been accepted! I plan to pursue dance as a profession because it is the thing that makes me the most joyous. It is very therapeutic to have the ability to communicate through movement. I love dance because there is never a moment of boredom. It’s always an exploration and an adventure. You are moving forward on the timeline, constantly evolving, always pursuing and satisfying something, trusting the universe in whatever it may have in store for you. It would be amazing to form connections and relationships with illustrious artists and companies, such as Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), which has been my dream company ever since an introductory experience when they performed at the New York City Center back in 2016. Crystal Pite’s “The Statement”, especially stood out for me and it has been another dream of mine to work with her or perform a piece by her since. I also am intrigued by the creations of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Another major influence is Annika Lisa Verplancke. I absolutely love her movement quality and her confidence in her uniqueness. Although she may have no idea who I am, she has helped me with my own confidence and gave me a better understanding of my personal movement. This is also true with Darrell Grand Moultrie and Greg Lau, whom I had the wonderful opportunities to work with them, respectively. Madoka Kariya and Nicole Ishimaru are also two people that I look up to very much as seeing them dance was the first time I could see and imagine myself on stage instead of or along with their spirits. They are both dancers that kind of look like me and represent my culture, and this gave me hope for a much more diverse future in dance. Creating a space for all, no matter what race, culture, gender, etc. is so extremely necessary and Nigel Campbell and Chanel DaSilva’s leadership does exactly so. Similarly, I hope to create an inclusive company fighting against animal cruelty after my performance career. I imagine it would be called “ARMs”, which stands for “Animal Rights Movements” and also happens to be the initials of my family members. The logo would be many animals of all shapes and sizes marching along a sketch of a human arm. There is still so much work to do, things to learn, space to grow, but that is why I dance. That is life. I am incredibly grateful for everything in my life thus far. The joy of dance is something unearthly. Thank you.
