My name is Blake Montgomery. I am a graduate of Parkersburg South High School who has completed the automotive technician course. My educational aspirations consist of acquiring an automotive technician degree and eventually owning my own business. However, I am certain that if I do not complete my college degree, I could never have the opportunity to achieve my career goals. I decided that I will attain a career as an automotive technician since my passion has always been working on cars and assisting others. I know that all my goals will remain dreams if I do not complete my automotive technician degree. Therefore, I am committed to working hard in school and looking for opportunities that could help me make my goals a reality.

My educational aspirations consist of acquiring an automotive technician degree and eventually owning my own business. I decided that I will attain a career as an automotive technician since my passion has always been working on cars and assisting others. However, I only had the opportunity to take a skilled trade once I was a junior in high school. I decided to focus on the automotive technician program since this is my dream. My training in high school taught me how an engine works, how to change oil and how to change tires on several types of vehicles. My current job has taught me a lot more about tires and tire maintenance. I hope to continue to learn new skills and apply what I have learned so far during my training at NASCAR Technical Institute.
I do not believe society or the education system provides enough exposure to skilled trades. I think there should be a basic life skills course that must be completed before graduating high school. This course should include the basics of cooking, cleaning, personal finance, personal hygiene, and home and vehicle maintenance. Besides the basic life skills course, there should also be an introduction to skilled trades. This should include skills like how to use specific power tools, how to perform CPR, basic driving skills, home repairs, basic plumbing skills, and lawn maintenance. There are so many teens today, including myself, that do not know how to do most of these items.

My name is Blake Montgomery. I feel there are not many differences between the Greatest Generation and the Millennials Gen Z. The Greatest Generation had to come out of the depression and many started their businesses to survive. The same will be true for the Millennials Gen Z if they don't want to be underemployed or to increase their income. My educational aspirations consist of acquiring an automotive technician degree and eventually owning my own business. I decided that I will attain a career as an automotive technician since my passion has always been working on cars and assisting others.
Since birth, my mother has never provided any financial assistance to my father for my upbringing. She has never been active in my life, and I see her about once every two or three years for about twenty minutes. For the first four years of my life, I lived with several family members as my father struggled to support me. He always tried to make sure we had a roof over our heads and food on the table. And then in 2020, I was removed from my father’s home, and he was sentenced to 12 years in prison. I was then placed with my great-aunt as my guardian. I had not spent much time with her, so it was a struggle at first. I have also struggled in school and was finally tested. I have a learning disability but with the adjustments made at school, I have thrived over the last two years. I have always felt like I didn’t belong or couldn’t count on others. This has made me feel like I have to always watch out for myself and be guarded against others. My great-aunt changed all of that and I feel like I have learned so much just in the short three years I have been with her.
My great-aunt has become a major influence in my life, and she inspired me to pursue my dreams. She is always supportive and provides great insight into my goals. She always takes the time to listen to my aspirations and guides how to move forward with my dream. My great-aunt has proven to me that she will always be there for me and is on my side pushing me to think about what I want to do with my life and the steps I need to take to achieve those things. She has also helped me focus on my dreams and career goals. I want to make her proud of me and all the things I hope to accomplish.
I decided that I had to take charge of my future and I worked full-time to complete my high school education. My training in high school taught me how an engine works, how to change oil and how to change tires on several types of vehicles. My current job has taught me a lot more about tires and tire maintenance. I hope to continue to learn new skills and apply what I have learned so far during my training at NASCAR Technical Institute. My education will have a great influence on my own life because it will give me the education and the skills, I need to become successful. I will also be moving to another state to complete this education. This makes me a little anxious. I have very few close friends, but I feel like they are life-long friends because they have stuck with me through all my life experiences so far. I am shy and it is hard to get to know me. However, I feel like this makes me a stronger person and gives me a greater passion for what I am trying to achieve. I also hope to overcome my fears of meeting new people and building life-long friendships while I am in school.
After I complete my education, I would like to open a three-bay standard automotive shop with a small diner on the property that allows people to have a meal or snack while having repairs done on their vehicle. Eventually, I would like to expand the mechanic shop to an all-inclusive mechanical repair organization and expand the diner to include additional seating and menu options. I would also like to add to the business a gas station/convenience store, diesel shop and racetrack. The racetrack would allow customers to test out their performance modifications and house special events. This would become a one-stop shop for both local customers as well as travelers.
Opening my business would also help increase the number of employment opportunities for my community. As the number of vehicles is increasing to hybrid and electric, the number of mechanics with the needed experience and knowledge to work on them is decreasing. I would like to partner with local high schools to implement an internship for students that would help them gain on-the-job experience and provide elective credits to those students who are interested in this type of trade school training. As part of this program, I would also like to train the students on how to restore older vehicles. This is an industry that is lacking in my community, and I feel the demand would provide a great opportunity for the right students. This would also expand their skills and knowledge from automotive technician to auto body repair and restoration. This in turn would increase their employment opportunities down the road and provide local businesses with more skilled labor. I hope that my business will have a lasting impact on my community and help build a strong foundation for my future family and make them proud of what I have accomplished. I have learned a lot over the last few years and I am excited to see what my future holds and how my life changes as I continue to go for my dreams and complete my education.

Joe Ford Trade Scholarship
1. Which trade are you going to pursue after graduation?
Automotive technician.
2. Why are you interested in this particular trade?
I decided that I will attain a career as an automotive technician since my passion has always been working on cars and assisting others.
3. A person entering the trades should be able to think outside the box, be creative, and problem solve. Give some specific examples of things you currently do or have recently done during your high school years that require these type of skills. (examples: working on engines, welding projects, building projects, etc...)
My training in high school taught me how an engine works, how to change oil and how to change tires on several types of vehicles. My current job has taught me a lot more about tires and tire maintenance. I hope to continue to learn new skills and apply what I have learned so far during my training at NASCAR Technical Institute.
4. A great applicant is someone that truly wants to enter the trades after graduation and already has a plan to achieve their goal of a career in the trades. What is your plan and how far along are you in your plan? Please be specific as possible. (Do you have a job lined up? Have you talked to any potential employers? Have you researched schools or courses? Are you already signed up for classes/courses?)
I have signed up for the automative technician degree and associated courses. 5. If I were to call an adult in your life that knows you well, why would they recommend you to receive this scholarship?
Yes, the majority of the adults in my life know my story. This has made feel like I must always watch out for myself and be guarded against others. My great-aunt changed all of that and I feel like I have learned so much just in the short three years I have been with her. She has helped me realize that not all people are “out to get me” and that I can achieve my goals if I put my mind to it. My great-aunt has become a major influence in my life, and she inspired me to pursue my dreams. She is always supportive and provides great insight into my goals. She always takes the time to listen to my aspirations and provides guidance on how to move forward with my dream.

Teen drunk driving continues to be a problem. I have seen it several times when friends have been drinking and they start walking to their cars to drive home. I always tell them that they are not only putting their lives in danger but also anyone else out on the road. I feel as a teen, there is a lot of peer pressure to go out with your friends and to drink. I have always told my friends that I would not drink and drive. I have become their designated driver. There have been a few new rules implemented but more can be done to reduce the numbers. Unfortunately, it seems that teen drinking is starting at a younger age. Education about the dangers of drinking and driving should start in middle school and the schools should have the parents attend the presentation.
In order to help lower drunk driving among teens, the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) should mandate a breathalyzer ignition interlock be installed on all vehicles for any driver under 21. The DMV can charge the driver a fee for the tool and return a portion of that fee when it is turned back in when they turn 21. The DMV can introduce a bill to create a new law and gain support from senators in Montana and/or other states that have the highest number of drunk drivers. This would show the citizens in that state or states that they are addressing teen drunk driving deaths. I think this, in turn, would start lowering adult drunk driving deaths because it would be teaching the younger drivers not to drink and drive.
I feel the parents of teens will back this law and contact their representatives to vote for this bill. I also think insurance companies and law enforcement officers will support this bill. Once the bill has passed and is voted into law, then the states could allot a portion of their budget to purchase these tools and issue them to the DMVs around their state based on population and teen drunk driving statistics. These tools would need to be tracked and the state can bill a driver the total cost of the tool if it is not returned within 30 days of turning 21.
The long-term emotional and financial gains from implementing this program will be returned repeatedly as the years pass. This will save the state, county and city police officers time and money since they will not be responding to as many drunk driving calls. This will also save insurance copies a lot of money on claim payouts from property damage and wrecks. Also, the parents will not have to go through the heartbreak of losing a child that was driving drunk or having a child sentenced to prison for killing someone behind the wheel. Breathalyzers have been saving lives and I feel issuing them to teen drivers is the next step in helping save lives and educating future generations on the dangers of drinking and driving.

She always takes the time to listen to my aspirations and guides me on how to move forward with my dream. I want to make her proud of me and all the things I hope to accomplish. I also have two younger brothers that I am showing that if they work hard and go for their dreams, they can accomplish anything. Currently, they both live with other family members as well. They both look up to me and I want to continue to be a good role model for them now and in the future.
I decided that I had to take charge of my future as I worked full-time as I completed my high school education. My training in high school taught me how an engine works, how to change oil and how to change tires on several types of vehicles. My current job has taught me a lot more about tires and tire maintenance. I hope to continue to learn new skills and apply what I have learned so far during my training at NASCAR Technical Institute. I will also be moving to another state to complete this education. This makes me a little anxious. I have very few close friends, but I feel like they are life-long friends because they have stuck with me through all of my life experiences so far.
I hope that my business will have a lasting impact on my community and help build a strong foundation for my future family and make them proud of what I have accomplished.

My educational aspirations consist of acquiring an automotive technician degree and eventually owning my own business. I decided that I will attain a career as an automotive technician since my passion has always been working on cars and assisting others. I know that all my goals will remain dreams if I do not complete my automotive technician degree. Therefore, I am committed to working hard in school and looking for opportunities that could help me make my goals a reality.

My name is Blake Montgomery. I have allergies to pollen, dust, cat dander, and whole wheat. The allergies have hindered me from participating in several activities with family and friends. I also have two cats, which I love, but there are days I just can't be around them. I have had severe allergies at times when I could hardly get out of bed because I had blurry vision, congestion headache, lightheadedness, sore throat, hard to speak and sneezing.

Over the last several years, I have been wanting to repair my great-grandfather’s old pickup truck to memorialize him and the memories we made together. Eventually, this vehicle would become my business’s display car. My great-grandfather was a major influence in my life, and he inspired me to pursue my dreams. He was supportive and provided great insight into my goals. He always took the time to listen to my aspirations and provided guidance on how to move forward with my dream. My education will have a great influence on my own life because it will give me the education and the skills, I need to become successful. Consequently, in order for me to embark on this incredible opportunity I am extremely reliant on grants and scholarships to see this experience come to fruition. These scholarships and grants will assist me in achieving my goals by supporting my education and gaining the knowledge needed to become the best automotive technician.

Students Impacted by Incarceration Scholarship
My name is Blake Montgomery. I am a student at Parkersburg South High School who has completed the automotive technician course.
Since birth, my mother has never provided any financial assistance to my father for my upbringing. For the first four years of my life, I lived with several family members as my father struggled to support me. And in 2020, I was removed from my father’s home, and he was sentenced to 12 years in prison. I was then placed with my great-aunt as my guardian.
My father being incarcerated has impacted my life tremendously. It has made me stop and think about my future and what I want out of life. I have a great support system in my family and they are continuously encouraging me to pursue my goals and dreams.
I have been working full-time as I am continuing to complete my high school education. My education will have a great influence on my own life because it will give me the education and the skills, I need to become successful. Consequently, in order for me to embark on this incredible college opportunity I am extremely reliant on grants and scholarships to see this experience come to fruition. I will be responsible for paying any outstanding tuition and the financial assistance will help me achieve my goals by supporting my education and gaining the knowledge needed to become the best automotive technician.

Generational wealth to me is when your family leaves property or investments to other family members when they pass away. My great-grandfather and great-grandmother built a home and left it to their son, my grandfather. My grandfather gave the home to my father and my father is leaving the home to me.
