What I have done and what I plan to do to give back to my school and community is working with the local government, the Mayor's Youth Council. This is my 1st year at MYC and basically what MYC is, a one-year program for Los Angeles high school students. And the Youth Council works to empower its members to advocate with reference to causes relevant to the youth of Los Angeles. Soon we will have to start a project where we help the individuals in the East Valley (MYC is divided into cohorts, for example, South LA and West Valley; I am in the East Valley Cohort). What I have outlined in my future project is to start the implementation of classes for students to learn and properly comprehend environmental issues and climate change. How I plan on arranging this is by making it a mandatory class, like physical education, where students get credits for completing the course. Climate change and global warming are quickly becoming a growing problem all over the world. Most people have plans on how we can reduce the effects, but the main problem is that people don't understand the means of doing so. By educating the youth earlier about this, this will be much more effective. Of course, this goes back to the whole community as well in view of the fact that then students can spread the information with what they've learned in the class to relatives and friends, thus creating a cleaner community.
