Golf is something I could not imagine my life without. From the first time I picked up a club at the age of seven, I fell in love with the sport. It has been an avid part of my life for the past eleven years. My dad and I would spend the weekends traveling to different tournaments. He would caddy for me until I aged out of that type of tournament, and then he would just watch. Golf is something that has always been my father's and my thing. Spending late nights on the range or the course, waking up early to get in a quick nine before everyone else wakes up. Golf is the foundation of our relationship and it always will be, as this is something we can do for the rest of our lives.
Aside from the early years of my golf journey, golf has gotten me through many different stages in my life. It has become my safe space where I go to let go of the world around me. Nine holes after school allow me to forget about the difficult day, week, or month I had for two hours and just let me focus on the present. Golf takes my mind off what is bothering me and allows me to relax.
Golf has also taught me many life lessons along the way. Golf is not an easy sport to play. At times I want to quit and never go back, but it has taught me how to endure difficult challenges. I always push through and continue playing the sport I love and I see that transfer to my day-to-day life.
Being a woman in a male-dominated sport is not always an easy task. Along the way, men have not always been the nicest. There have been times in which I get made fun of for playing golf or they just do not believe in my ability to play. Men get angry when I get put off in front of them because of the fact I am a girl and tiny, so they think I am going to play slow. It has been easy learning to pay no mind to them and push through. On top of men, I play on an all-boys team and Bishop Stang High School. That in and of itself is a challenge because I am fighting to prove myself amongst 20 boys.
Thankfully I have been able to endure all the challenges thrown my way during my golf career and I am now able to continue my career on the collegiate level at Saint Anselm College. Golf has opened many doors for me and I will be forever grateful for the game of golf.
