Growing up being surrounded by a family full of successful people I knew that I wanted to be something great. In kindergarten I was the kid that changed my mind on who I wanted to be growing up. First it was a fashion designer, then a lawyer and as of now my mind is settled on being a Pediatric dentist. My dreams have always been to be something great so that my past self could be proud of who I am now I have strived for many things in life that have shaped me into the young lady I am today. I'm very sure that because of adversity It will help me develop resilience and maintain my composure when facing challenges.
My short-term goals in life are to finish each semester with a 3.0 or higher G.P.A, also I plan to become more active on campus and gain enough confidence to break out of my shell. Along the way I would also like to strengthen my relationship with God because I know that with his faith, I can conquer anything and everything. I hope to make an impact and be an example from my hometown that another young black girl can make it out of a small town and become something great. I want to be a leader and show others that your past defines your future. If anything, it helps shape your future into becoming something greater. My goals today are shaped because of the adversity I have faced in my past which pushes me to set bigger goals and accomplish them.
In the past I have always had a problem with math, and I instilled in my brain that I was never going to understand it, I would constantly compare myself to others in the class who would get it. My fear of going to college was huge because of the fact that I would have to take a higher-level math class. I doubted myself before even trying. Until I attend Jackson State University where God has blessed me with an amazing teacher who explained the lesson very fluently and to the point where I would feel confident enough to do it on my own, which shows how much of a striver I am. By the end of the semester my confidence began to grow, and I realize that being honest with myself and my peers is what will help me in the future.
In my hometown Clarksdale, Mississippi I plan to give back to the community by providing after school support for kids that that struggle with certain subjects. I also want to create a program that provides opportunities for young girls and boys to meet successful adults that were once in their shoes. I believe that it is great that young ladies and young men, without the proper household, should be given the opportunity to have the right guidance in their lives. I would like to form a program to give the youth in the Mississippi Delta the opportunity to explore the world. I hope to provide children in Clarksdale, Mississippi with the opportunity and inspiration to explore the world beyond their hometown, and to do so, they must take action.
Janean D. Watkins Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
Growing up in a family of accomplished individuals, I wanted to be like them. In kindergarten, I would constantly change my mind about who I wanted to be when I grew up. It was a fashion designer, then a lawyer, and now I want to be a pediatric dentist. My ambitions have always been to achieve greatness so that my former self may be proud of who I grew to be. I have strived for many things in life, faced diversity, which have turned, me into the young person I am now. Facing diversity will teach me how to control myself when confronted with problems and how to persevere.
My sort-term life goals include finishing each semester with a 3.0 or better GPA, being more engaged on campus, and gaining the confidence to step out of my shell. Along the process, I'd like to build my connection with God because I know that I can overcome anything with his faith. I wish to impact and serve as an example f in my community to show that another young black lady can leave a small place and achieve big things. I want to be a leader and show people that your history does not define your future. If anything, it shapes your future into something bigger. My ambitions now are formed by the difficulties I have endured, which motivates me to set and achieve larger goals.
In the past, I've always struggled with math and instilled in my brain that I would never understand it; I would constantly compare my understanding to those in class and would be afraid to ask questions. My worry about attending college was intense since I would have to take a higher-level math subject. I questioned myself before even trying until I attended Jackson State University, where God blessed me with a great College Algebra instructor. Who delivered each topic in such ways that I felt secure enough to handle it on my own without having to search on the internet and cheat myself of my knowledge. Toward the end of the semester. My confidence in college algebra increased, all I needed was a little encouragement.
During my younger years, I used to feel like I needed to pretend to be someone else into fit in with society or feel attractive. I constantly compared myself to others and pretended to have a personality that was not genuine, just be to be accepted by a particular group of friends. I wanted to be liked by everyone and would go to great lengths to make that possible. However, towards the end of high school, I realized that being myself was unique; I learned to love myself, both my features and insecurities, and stopped pretending to be someone I wasn't just to be accepted.
These experiences have been eye-opening, especially when preparing for college. The challenges and hardships I have encountered in my past have played a significant role in shaping me into the resilient individual that I am today. I often reflect upon my past experiences in a positive light because, without those failures, I would not have had the drive to become the ambitious person I am today. I recognize that my journey through college will come with its own set of obstacles and setbacks. Adversity is an inevitable aspect of life that we will all face at some point.

Cheerleading is not only a sport, it is an art that requires actual strength, mental commitment, and strong team spirit. It is also a form of expression that is combined with stunts, dance, and gymnastics to have a successful performance. Cheer has taught me valuable lessons which have shaped me into the person I am today.
One of the most important things that cheer has taught me is teamwork. As a cheerleader, I've learned that everyone has an important role to play. Whether they are a flyer, a base, or a spotter, each person must work together to ensure the success and safety of the stunt. Through those activities, I gained insight and learned the importance of communication, trust and mutual support in achieving a common goal.
Cheerleading has also taught me the value of hard effort and devotion, Cheerleading demands a lot of physical strength and endurance, and it can take up to months of practice to perfect a 15-minute routine. Cheer has taught me that hard effort and perseverance pay off. I have seen the results of my efforts in the shape of better abilities and performance, which has given me a sense of achievement and self-confidence.
I've also mastered the ability to be tough and to push through the difficulties through cheerleading. As a cheerleader, I've been hurt, failed and disappointed, however, I have learned to remain positive and focus on my goals, which has taught me that success is not only in cheering but in all aspects of life that require determination and many more.
I realized the importance of leadership and the responsibility I hold as a senior cheerleader. I've learned to lead by example and inspire and motivate my teammates. These leadership qualities have carried over into other areas of my life, such as school and work, where I have learned to be a responsible and effective leader. With any sport, we tend to form bonds with one another, which is one of many things I'm proud of from my cheerleading experience. I see them as forever sisters rather than teammates, which is a blessing that other teams do not typically discover.
In conclusion, cheerleading has been an important part of my life, by teaching me valuable life lessons and providing me with a supportive community. It has taught me the value of teamwork leadership, devotion, and responsibility. Cheer has formed me into the person I am today, and I will always cherish the memories and lessons that I've learned through this incredible sport.
Jorian Kuran Harris (Shugg) Helping Heart Foundation Scholarship
WinnerMe being a student who dreams of becoming a dentist, I am aware of the financial load that comes with pursuing a profession in healthcare. I'm aware of the high cost of dental school, and many students are forced to take out significant loans to fund their education. So I believe a scholarship would help me achieve my goal of becoming a pediatric dentist.
Receiving a scholarship would lessen some of the struggles that come with paying for dental school. As a recipient of this scholarship. I would have the ability to focus more on my studies and clinical work without the worry of tuition and living costs. Which would allow me to focus more on my education and increase my chances of succeeding.
A scholarship would provide me with the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities, internships and more that can enhance my education and career prospects. I would be able to explore a variety of opportunities that would enhance my education with the financial support of a scholarship.
I believe that winning this scholarship would give me confidence. It would be a great recognition of my academic achievements and serve as a motivation to continue striving for excellence. I know when I win or receive awards it gives me the mindset to keep going.
I recall a time when I would break down and give up because of frustration with Math, a subject that I struggle with. I realized that this was a subject that I needed to spend extra time on so that I could understand without my notes. Over the years I've learned to push myself and build my confidence when it comes to something I struggle with.
I knew though, that I couldn't let my frustration get the best of me. With that faith and prayer, I am now passing math classes with an 80 or higher grade average, which I would not have achieved without God's assistance. Today I am confident that with Faith, I am capable of accomplishing far more than I previously imagined.
My experiences taught me the importance of endurance, the power of prayer and the significance of asking for help when required. It also advises me that everyone has their strength and weaknesses, and it is critical not to compare oneself to others, which is something I frequently do. Instead, we should focus on our development and progress, and we should have trust in our ability to attain our goals.

Growing up in Mississippi, and being from a small city is difficult. My mother and I struggled a lot, growing up trying to figure out our next move. The schools I attended were frustrating ,trying to learn while there were teachers who showed no care for students. My mother has always gave me the experience to explore new things. Her taking me to college tours in my youth years left a mark on me. The happiness I saw in my mother gave me motivation to continue to push myself, I know that if I pray and work, I will successfully leave this small city that I’m currently in.
