My name is Berlyn Goebel and I am a senior at Sage Creek High School. Some hobbies of mine include hanging out with friends, reading, and working on my mental health. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 6 months ago and everyday I'm trying to improve my health. For college I will most likely major in criminal justice and minor in psychology or double major in those topics. My top three choices for colleges are Cal Poly Humboldt, San Fransisco State University, and Northern Arizona University (NAU). For college I wanted to get away from my home town (San Diego), so I can see how other people live and because I love to travel. Throughout my childhood I have always loved reading, watching murder mysteries, and looking at unsolved cases, but I never knew what I could do with my love of criminology. In high school I got involved in the biomedical classes they had to offer and I fell in love with forensics. I loved looking at crimes and learning about the body and diseases. Learning about what forensic scientist do and can see with someones DNA interests me. That's when I decided to go into forensics and study criminology. Even though I love learning about crime that's not the reason why I want to pursue a career in forensics. I want to pursue a career in forensics because I want to help families get closure with death. I want to be able to solve cases that haven't been solved yet. I know that's a big dream with just starting out in the criminal justice world, but with the technology we have today and more people being interested in this career I believe many cases can be solved. I believe having more women in STEM careers can be very influential on young girls. For me growing up I only ever saw males fulfilling the role of police officers, scientists, and investigators. I knew that females could go into that career but I never saw them on TV or knew anyone. For me growing up thinking that way I was hesitant signing up for science classes or talking to my family about me going into criminology/forensics. When in high school I got involved with my girls in stem club and learned how important it is to have women advocate for being in STEM careers. It helps young girls like myself find their passion and not be afraid of going into a male dominated field. With representation I'm not afraid of going into this career now.
