Bio

I have always had a passion for personal fitness and wellness. From the experience I have gained throughout high school, I realized I want to use my love of fitness and open a gym focused on strength training to help people reach their fitness goals. I would love to be able to run fitness camps for young athletes and work one-on-one with individuals. I have taken advanced courses in Health Sciences and obtain an American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification. Outside of the classroom, I have pursued additional learning opportunities on my own. Working with personal trainers and independent study programs, I completed coursework to become certified as a Personal Trainer and Nutrition Specialist through the American Sports and Fitness Association. Because I enjoyed the content and experience, I continued to seek out opportunities for additional fitness training and became certified in concussion management through USA Rugby, TRX® fitness, Core Stability, and StairMaster® High-Intensity Interval Training. My goal is to own a successful fitness business. I enjoy dancing, hunting, fishing, and weight lifting in my spare time. I would like to live a comfortable lifestyle with a great work/ life balance. Family is an important part of my life, and finding time to be with them helps keep me focused and on point.

The piercing sound of my alarm clock shatters the tranquility of the early morning as it blared at 5:30 a.m. Reluctantly, I roll out of bed, knowing that another exciting day at Performance Course awaits me. I must arrive at the field by 6:30 a.m. to ensure everything is in place for the students who will soon be streaming in. I feel a sense of purpose and determination as I step onto the dew-kissed grass. The first group of students arrives. Their sleepy eyes are eager to embark on a new day of growth and improvement. I greet them with a warm smile. Getting up at 5:30 a.m. each morning is a small sacrifice compared to the immense rewards I reap. Witnessing my students grow and excel is a gift that fills my heart with gratitude. Their journey became my own, and their triumphs motivate me to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible. My journey in athletics and fitness not only transformed my own life but also inspired me to make a positive impact on others. I was fortunate to receive guidance from dedicated mentors and acquire knowledge in health sciences, personal training, and nutrition. Since discovering my passion for personal fitness and wellness, I have been driven to help others on their journeys. In the same way, my passion for sales and marketing stems from the desire to share knowledge and make a positive impact. Marketing is about understanding people's needs and connecting them with products and services to improve their lives. My experience in fitness taught me the importance of clear communication, building trust, and providing value—all essential skills in sales and marketing. My ability to inspire and guide others in their fitness journeys could translate seamlessly into a career in sales and marketing. The satisfaction of seeing a client achieve their fitness goals is akin to the satisfaction of seeing a marketing campaign successfully meet its targets. Both require a deep understanding of the audience, strategic planning, and the ability to motivate and engage. To deepen my understanding of human behavior and effective communication, I pursued advanced courses in Health Sciences during high school. This coursework laid a solid foundation for my fitness journey and equipped me with the skills to design impactful marketing strategies. My training programs' success in improving clients' health mirrored the potential success of a well-crafted marketing campaign. In the next five years, my career aims and goals revolve around becoming a recognized leader in sales and marketing within the fitness industry. I envision myself successfully owning and operating a gym specializing in strength training, providing personalized coaching and support to clients while employing innovative marketing strategies to attract and retain them. I aim to create an inclusive and empowering environment that fosters growth, resilience, and transformative results. Additionally, I plan to lead fitness camps specifically designed for young athletes, offering them expert guidance on training, nutrition, and mental resilience. These camps will serve as platforms for mentorship, instilling in participants the values of teamwork, goal setting, and mental fortitude. Effective marketing of these camps will be crucial to reaching and impacting more young athletes. In the predawn silence, the persistent ring of my alarm clock acts as a clarion call, breaking the stillness of the morning air. This early ritual is a symbolic gesture, a silent vow to pursue excellence in all my endeavors, whether personal fitness or marketing. The sacrifices I make each morning are a testament to my commitment to transforming lives and fostering well-being through effective communication and strategic marketing.

My heart filled with pride as I took the keys from my dad. I was just sixteen, a newly licensed driver, and I was handed the keys to my first car, a 2011 Acura TL. Not only was the car leading Honda’s luxury brand in reliability and performance when it was in its prime, but now it was mine. That joy was gone when I took my car for an airbag recall. Acura replaced the airbag. The oil pump leaked, a $5000 repair. I worked a year to save that money and had to spend all my savings on a single repair. I took the estimate to my stepdad, John. He knew his way around a car. Finally, a sliver of hope came to me; he said he would teach me how to replace the engine and learn a skill. I began searching for a replacement engine. After weeks of searching for the best engine within my price range, the disappointment returned. Then, I found an engine from a crash test vehicle with only 167 actual miles listed for $2,000. After that, I knew I had to have that engine. The hopes of a newly improved car were within reach. After several shipping mishaps, the engine arrived two weeks later, but the engine swap was not destined to be before the start of my senior year as we had planned. The lead mechanic, my stepdad, contracted COVID and was hospitalized with pneumonia. Hours of planning and anticipation, once again put on hold. My car’s heart transplant was at a standstill. Finally, a week before the first day of school, my stepdad said he would talk me through the car’s surgery. Step by greasy step, I loosened bolts, removing pieces of my car until finally, there was nothing but a shell. The engine and transmission were out and ready for the swap. We realized we had hit another stumbling block. The new engine and transmission were different from the old, yet another obstacle to overcome mid-surgery. The new set-up was a 2012 six-speed key start, but my car was a 2011 five-speed push-button start. Fast forward a year. I am still driving my car, although very cautiously. Twice, the newly replaced axle broke and left me stranded in the middle of the road, wondering if I would become the next road fatality as I waited for a tow truck. Most cars are brand new, and even the new parts have failed and been replaced. It seems fate would have me trade in my first car, but until then, I will drive it carefully and keep tools with me if I need to make a mid-road repair. College starts in the fall, and I will be a commuter student, so my car is essential. With some luck, ingenuity, and maybe even a few prayers, my car and I will make it another year or two to get my degree. Two years later, here I am, ready to graduate college and driving a brand new car that I purchased myself. I never thought I could make a car run, let alone save enough money to buy a brand new car on my own.

On a dark Friday night, I was on my usual drive home, completely unaware of the life-changing event about to unfold. At around 2:30 in the morning, with just a mile to go, I suddenly lost consciousness. The car swerved off the road, and in a panic, I clutched the steering wheel as tightly as I could. The car flew over a ditch before finally stopping, enveloped by deflated airbags. That crash was a wake-up call. A thorough medical evaluation afterward revealed something I never expected: I was diabetic. This diagnosis changed everything. Suddenly, I had to closely watch my glucose levels and make significant changes to my eating habits. The memory of that night is still vivid, a constant reminder of how crucial it is to take care of my health, especially while driving. Looking back, I realize that I could have avoided the whole ordeal if I had paid more attention to my health when I first noticed my blood pressure fluctuating. Learning to live with diabetes was a huge challenge, but it also taught me a lot. Checking my glucose twice daily and changing my diet became a new routine. It took a lot of discipline and vigilance, just like the lessons from that night. The crash made me realize how important it is to stay fully alert while driving. What used to be a mundane task now feels like a significant responsibility. One big lesson from this experience was the importance of communication. I started sharing my travel plans and schedules with my loved ones, not just as a courtesy but as a safety measure. Knowing that someone knows my whereabouts gives me a sense of security. Living with hypoglycemia has been a journey of resilience and adaptability. Every day brings new challenges, from managing glucose levels during important moments to fitting my health needs into my daily life. For example, I once had to navigate a crucial job interview while dealing with unstable blood sugar. It took careful planning and constant monitoring to ensure my health didn't interfere with my performance. Social events and family gatherings also became tricky, requiring me to balance enjoying myself and sticking to my health regimen. I’ve had to get creative, whether carrying emergency snacks or finding other ways to stay on track. Each challenge has reinforced my resilience and taught me that adaptability is key. Dealing with hypoglycemia has been more than just managing a medical condition; it’s been a journey of self-discovery. It's made me realize my strengths and limitations and pushed me to reassess my priorities. I’ve learned that true success is about balancing physical health, mental well-being, and personal fulfillment. This realization has led me to pursue goals that align with my values and passions. Rather than seeing my condition as a setback, I've embraced it as a chance for positive change and growth. I've discovered that resilience isn't just about overcoming and thriving despite obstacles.

    Financial Literacy Scholarship Award
My initial exposure to finances began in middle school when I opened a bank account. Along with this account came the opportunity to monitor my credit score. I was captivated by the world of personal finance. Understanding credit scores is crucial in accessing favorable financial opportunities later in life. I took a significant step towards building credit by being added as an authorized user on my mom's credit card. The purpose of this arrangement was to use the card for gas expenses. Instilling the importance of responsible credit card usage, I was required to pay off the balance each week when I received my paycheck. This practice allowed me to establish a record of timely payments. When I turned 18, I opened two credit cards. I selected cards that offered cash-back bonuses, allowing me to make the most of my everyday purchases. By paying off the card balances every two weeks, I avoided accruing interest and carried no forward debt. This approach ensured that I remained debt-free and allowed me to take advantage of the rewards system embedded in these credit cards. During my first semester of college, I recognized the potential benefits of utilizing student loans to bolster my credit history further. I decided to take out a student loan, understanding the responsibility of borrowing money. To my delight, I was awarded an additional scholarship later in the semester, resulting in a surplus of funds. Instead of indulging in unnecessary expenses, I promptly used the refunded amount to pay off the unsubsidized portion of my student loan. This proactive approach reduced the overall interest that would accumulate over time and demonstrated my commitment to managing debt responsibly. Throughout my credit journey, my overarching goal has been to establish a strong credit history. By closely monitoring my credit score, responsibly managing credit cards, and strategically repaying student loans, I have worked diligently to build a favorable credit profile. This commitment has been crucial in securing future financial opportunities, such as reasonable interest rates for mortgages, auto loans, and other significant life investments. My interaction with credit has been purposeful and disciplined. From my early exposure to credit monitoring to becoming an authorized user on my mom's credit card and eventually managing multiple credit cards and student loans, I have actively worked towards building my credit history. By leveraging cash-back rewards, paying off balances promptly, and making informed financial decisions, I have ensured a solid foundation for my financial future. The lessons learned and responsible habits developed along this journey will continue to guide my financial decisions, providing a secure and prosperous future. My financial goals revolve around building a secure and prosperous future by making prudent decisions and fostering a positive relationship with credit. I am determined to avoid bad debt and maintain a disciplined approach to financial management, ensuring I am always in control of my economic well-being. By consistently maintaining a high credit score, I leverage the best interest rates for significant purchases, such as real estate, which will serve as a foundation for growing a sustainable passive income. Diversifying my investments into multiple passive income streams will further achieve financial freedom, allowing me to live comfortably and pursue my passions without being tied to the constraints of a 9-to-5 job. This journey is about securing my future, investing in myself and my family, and ensuring a fulfilling retirement. By following these financial aspirations, I am laying the groundwork for a life of abundance and fulfillment, allowing me to thrive in the present while paving the way for a prosperous and stress-free future.

Title: Embracing the Challenge: Millennials and Gen Z as Innovators of Change The Ode to Millennials-Gen Z presents a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities for the younger generation. It eloquently draws parallels between the struggles faced by the Greatest Generation and those faced by Millennials and Gen Z today. However, it's essential to critically evaluate this perspective and consider the multifaceted nature of the issues. While political decisions have indeed played a role in contributing to certain challenges, it's imperative to recognize that systemic issues such as income inequality, climate change, and student debt stem from a complex interplay of factors spanning political, economic, and societal decisions across generations. Many members of Generation Z and millennials entered into student loan agreements with the anticipation of lucrative careers, but not all performed the necessary due diligence and research. Some individuals from these generations expect student loan forgiveness based on promises made by figures like President Biden. This situation raises questions about personal responsibility, as some seek debt relief without acknowledging their role in their decisions regarding their education and loans. In contrast, I took a proactive approach to my education and financial future. I meticulously researched my degree plan and potential post-graduation earnings, enabling me to select a program that aligns with my long-term financial goals. Furthermore, I actively pursued opportunities to mitigate the cost of my college education, such as enrolling in dual credit classes during high school and taking CLEP exams. Instead of fixating on attending a prestigious state or Ivy League institution, I prioritized finding a college that suited my academic aspirations and fit within my budget. I was committed to securing merit-based opportunities that would alleviate the financial burden. I achieved good standing and merited tuition discounts through dedication and hard work. This proactive approach reflects a willingness to take ownership of my educational journey and financial decisions, setting a precedent for personal responsibility that can inspire others in my generation. In essence, while it's tempting to place the blame solely on external factors or promises made by politicians, there is an underlying message of accountability that needs to resonate within the Millennial and Gen Z population. My experience illustrates that by making informed choices, seizing available opportunities, and assuming responsibility for our decisions, we can forge a path toward financial stability and success while dispelling notions of entitlement. It's inspiring to hear that many individuals within the younger generation are motivated, innovative, and hardworking. The reference to obtaining employment through hard work, leadership, and learning is commendable and showcases the determination that characterizes many members of this generation. This initiative is a significant asset for driving positive change and overcoming the hurdles they face. However, it's also vital to acknowledge that the experiences of individuals within a generation can be remarkably diverse. While certain individuals may have achieved success through diligent effort, others could have encountered significant barriers such as restricted access to quality education, instances of discrimination, or economic inequalities. Understanding the multifaceted nature of these challenges is paramount in our pursuit of a more just and fair society. The learning landscape has expanded to encompass innovative avenues in our rapidly evolving world. A wealth of new educational opportunities has emerged, from virtual schools and remote learning platforms to freely available online college courses and specialized certificate programs. These diverse learning avenues cater to a broader spectrum of learners, offering flexibility and accessibility that were previously unheard of. Additionally, paid internships provide valuable hands-on experience while supplementing education, fostering practical skills increasingly valued in the job market. As we continue to embrace these new learning possibilities, we must ensure they are accessible to all members of society, irrespective of their background or circumstances. By addressing the disparities within our education and employment systems, we can create an environment enabling everyone to flourish and contribute to their unique talents. By collectively striving for inclusivity and opportunity, we step closer to a future where potential knows no boundaries. The Millennial and Gen Z cohort's optimism about innovation and invention is well-founded. This generation has grown up in an era of rapid technological advancement, providing them with unique tools to address existing challenges creatively. The jobs of tomorrow are yet to be imagined, and the ability to innovate will play a pivotal role in shaping the future. The notion that Millennials and Gen Z want not only to work to live but also live to enjoy life is a powerful sentiment. It reflects a shift in priorities towards a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle. However, balancing this aspiration with a realistic understanding of the world's economic and environmental challenges is crucial. Striking this balance requires innovative thinking and a solid commitment to sustainability and responsible consumption. In conclusion, the Ode to Millennials-Gen Z encourages us to consider the challenges and opportunities presented to the younger generation in a new light. While the perspective offered in the text raises some valid points, it's essential to approach these issues with nuance. Millennials and Gen Z have the potential to become a new "Greatest Generation" by harnessing their innovation, determination, and willingness to challenge the status quo. However, this journey requires a collective effort encompassing hard work, creative thinking, and a commitment to addressing systemic issues and promoting inclusivity and sustainability.

    Healthy Eating Scholarship
The Significance of Healthy Eating Habits: Transforming Physical and Mental Well-being In today's world, the significance of healthy eating habits has become increasingly evident in our pursuit of overall well-being. Embracing a proactive approach to nutrition empowers us to lead healthier, happier lives. As Benjamin Franklin wisely stated, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." While his words originally referred to fire prevention, they also hold for healthy living. By prioritizing healthy eating habits, we can prevent health issues and enjoy many benefits that positively impact our physical and mental health. Integrating healthy eating habits into our daily routines is essential for a balanced lifestyle. Proper nutrition equips our bodies with the necessary fuel and nutrients to function optimally, prevent diseases, and support overall well-being. By making informed choices about what we consume, we provide our bodies with the necessary tools to thrive. When we nourish our bodies with wholesome foods, we experience a notable increase in energy levels. Nutrient-dense foods provide a sustainable energy source, preventing energy crashes and promoting consistent daily productivity. Healthy eating habits contribute to better physical performance. A well-balanced diet supports muscle development, enhances endurance, and improves overall fitness. This allows us to engage in physical activities more easily and enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle. Proper nutrition supports cognitive function. Essential nutrients in healthy foods, such as omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, help nourish the brain and promote optimal health. This can improve focus, concentration, memory, and overall mental clarity. Healthy eating habits directly impact our mood and emotional well-being. Studies have shown that diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins are associated with a lower risk of depression and anxiety. On the other hand, diets high in processed foods, sugars, and unhealthy fats have been linked to an increased risk of mental health disorders. By prioritizing healthy eating, we can experience excellent emotional balance and well-being. Healthy eating habits form the cornerstone of a vibrant and fulfilling life. Understanding the importance of nutrition and making conscious choices about what we consume can transform our physical and mental health. Healthy eating habits lead to increased energy levels, improved physical performance, enhanced cognitive function, and better emotional well-being. Let us embrace the power of healthy eating and create a future where well-being is prioritized individually and collectively. Through our choices today, we can empower ourselves and future generations to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Books can transport us to different worlds, ignite our imagination, and resonate with our own experiences. Among the numerous literary works, "Old Yeller" by Fred Gipson holds a special place in my heart. This poignant tale captivated my imagination and served as a source of solace during a challenging period in my life. Through the protagonist's journey, the novel showcases themes of independence, perseverance, and determination while highlighting the unbreakable bond between a young boy and his dog. This narrative parallels my experiences with my beagle, Petee, who provided me comfort and companionship amidst my parents' arguments and eventual divorce. "Old Yeller" follows the journey of a young boy named Travis as he navigates the harsh realities of life on the Texas frontier. Set in the 1860s, Travis is thrust into adulthood prematurely when his father leaves to tend to a cattle drive, leaving him responsible for his family's welfare. His challenges, from wrestling with the wilderness to fending off dangerous animals, force him to mature and assume adult responsibilities. His journey deeply resonated with me, as I, too, underwent a transformative period during my parents' divorce. Like Travis, I was forced to confront the complexities of life earlier than expected, ultimately shaping me into a stronger and more resilient individual. Throughout the novel, Travis exemplifies qualities of independence and perseverance. With only his loyal dog, Old Yeller, by his side, Travis learns to rely on his instincts and resourcefulness. The duo faces countless trials and tribulations, from battling against a rabid wolf to surviving harsh weather conditions. Despite their adversities, Travis persists, undeterred by the formidable obstacles in his path. Witnessing his unwavering determination and self-reliance inspired me to embrace these qualities in my life, knowing that even in the face of adversity, one can find the strength to overcome. At the heart of "Old Yeller" lies the profound bond between Travis and his dog—their relationship blossoms from initial skepticism to a deep, unwavering companionship. As I delved into the story, I couldn't help but draw parallels to my experiences with my beagle, Petee. During the tumultuous times of my parents' arguments and eventual separation, Petee became my confidant and source of comfort. His unwavering loyalty and love provided a much-needed respite from the emotional turmoil surrounding me. Like Travis and Old Yeller, our bond transcended words, demonstrating the power of a loyal and steadfast companion during challenging times.

Community, a bond like no other Although I have always been passionate about helping others, it wasn't until my senior year in high school that I found my niche. I realized I want to use my strengths to promote kindness and serve my community by helping students. So I volunteered as a youth coach for Little League Baseball and flag football, sold tickets for sporting events, and worked concessions for booster clubs. I found strength in helping younger members of my community find their strengths. Connecting with younger students and athletes, I spent hours volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club. Sometimes, I tutored students and helped with their homework. Other times, we played basketball; afterward, the kids would open up to me about their problems. Then, we worked together to find solutions to their dilemmas. Helping them understand they were strong enough to work through their concerns and find solutions was a great way to help kids problem-solve and feel empowered. Building strength within my community and watching the kids grow is rewarding. I quickly learned that working with young children involves chasing butterflies, kicking dirt, and waving at mom in the stands, not just learning fundamental skills. However, the joy the kids receive when they score or make a great play is like nothing you can imagine. Patience has excellent rewards! I enjoy sharing my love of the game and my expertise. It has been rewarding to bring a smile to each face and watch them fill with excitement as they continue to grow. I have connected with young athletes to build a drive for success. Students not only excel but push themselves for higher achievements. Where I was initially unsure, volunteering and working with student-athletes has helped me make decisions about my future and build a community I am proud to be a part of. Giving back to the community that helped me grow into the man I am today is an integral part of my future. In addition, being a mentor for students is essential to the success of our future. For this reason, I plan to run youth fitness camps and mentor students on post-high school options. Of course, teaching health and wellness is critical, but I want to help students navigate their choices, make sound financial decisions, and help them find comfort in the difficult times between manhood and teenage years. Once you start giving back to the community, you see how positive actions encourage others to get involved too. It allows you to create a ripple of positive impact, which inspires others to do the same while tearing down barriers and achieving goals together.

Because I enjoyed the content and experience, I continued seeking opportunities for additional fitness training. As a result, I became certified in concussion management through USA Rugby, TRX® fitness, Core Stability, and StairMaster® High-Intensity Interval Training. These courses were excellent compliments of my advanced health science curriculum at school. Putting my knowledge of fitness and the human body to work immediately, I began implementing various types of training to develop muscle stability for injury prevention. I currently have three clients and have gotten more clients by word of mouth since January of 2022. However, I quickly learned that I needed more knowledge in marketing to grow the business as soon as I had hoped. So, to achieve my goal of owning a successful fitness business, I enrolled at Texas Wesleyan University to pursue a degree in Business Management. I will graduate with a bachelor's degree in two years. I selected Texas Wesleyan because it is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, known for the demands in the beauty and wellness industry and highly valued businesses. The mentorship at Texas Wesleyan is well-established and will help me secure valuable relationships and mentors. I am taking practical marketing, business development, law, and ethics. I will also have the opportunity to participate as a student-athlete as a player on the Texas Wesleyan Football team. I will also have the chance to work with their athletic trainers or assistant coaches as a student coach. Working as a student coach will allow me advanced opportunities to implement and develop my knowledge in personal training for student-athletes, injury prevention, and injury recovery. Using my degree and knowledge of fitness, I plan to help the community by offering free nutrition classes at the local boys and girls club. In addition, I want to use what I learned by applying to colleges and getting recruited to help future athletes as part of my community outreach. It takes courage to step into a new world and learn new skills, but it takes time, determination, and funding. I cannot tell you how much earning this scholarship would help my family and me. Scholarships like this will allow me to come one step closer to starting my life after college debt-free and enable me to achieve my goals without a financial burden as I begin my journey. Thank you so much for your support and consideration.

The quality I value most in myself is my ability to adapt to new situations. I believe that this characteristic is incredibly important in today's constantly changing world, and it has helped me to navigate through many difficult challenges throughout my life. Being the new kid at school can be a challenging experience, but I believe that there are several strategies that can help to make the transition smoother. I went to three different schools in one year when I was twelve. We moved five times, and my life was turned upside down. None of the changes were within my control, but my ability to adapt helped me tremendously. First, I try to be open-minded and approach the experience with a positive attitude. I try to see being the new kid as an opportunity to meet new people and learn about a new environment. I have friends from all walks of life and easily transition between peer groups. Second, I try to actively seek out opportunities to connect with others. This might involve joining clubs or sports teams or simply striking up conversations with people in my classes. I believe that building connections with others is key to feeling comfortable and supported in a new environment. I learned the names and interests of my classmates and built a relationship with everyone. Third, I try to be patient and give myself time to adjust. I remind myself that it takes time to make friends and to feel comfortable in a new place, and I try not to be too hard on myself if things don't come together as quickly as I would like. Lastly, I try to be myself and not be afraid of standing out. I believe that being genuine and true to yourself is an important step in building lasting relationships and making a new place feel like home. Being able to adapt to new situations is invaluable. One of the reasons why I value this characteristic so highly is because it has allowed me to be open-minded and to see opportunities where others might see obstacles. This ability to adapt has allowed me to take on new roles and responsibilities, and it has helped me to build a diverse set of skills that I can use in a variety of different contexts. Another reason why I value my ability to adapt is that it has helped me to be resilient in the face of adversity. I have been able to bounce back from difficult situations and learn from my mistakes, which has helped me to grow as a person. Overall, I believe that my ability to adapt is one of my greatest strengths, and it has been an invaluable asset to me throughout my life journey. I believe that it will continue to be an important characteristic that will help me to succeed in the future, and I will always strive to maintain this quality in myself.
    Your Health Journey Scholarship
Maintaining a healthy life is the best preventative medicine for everyone. Of course, making healthy choices and taking care of your body does not guarantee a person will never get sick, but it limits the risks. In 1735 Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Although he referred to fire prevention, the quote also applies to healthy living. All too often, people and some doctors are quick to offer up pills as solutions rather than make lifestyle changes. Unfortunately, looking for a quick fix is seen as an acceptable solution. Now more than ever, society needs to look at the benefits of healthy living rather than a prescription after the illness strikes. Preventing possible ailments and health issues before they become pandemics is the best way for society to face viruses and problems before they get started. First and foremost, get active. Do something physically active every day. You can be in a competitive sport to be active. Walking, running, and dancing are some of the simplest ways to move daily. Small children in schools often take “wiggle breaks.” This is the time for them to stand up, jump around, and wiggle out some energy. It does not matter if you are in a small space or have room to roam. Get active. Second, maintaining a healthy weight is critical for the body to perform at its best. It is all too easy to grab a meal on the go from a fast-food chain. These habits have led to an increase in obesity. Big, maybe beautiful, but it is not healthy. Making healthy choices can be difficult but will also lead to the body’s ability to fight infection much more effortlessly. Third, eating healthy foods and avoiding bad habits such as drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes. Fast food may be easy, but the best option, such as grilled over fried, can make a difference. Foods packed with antioxidants and nutrients give the body fuel and energy to fight off infections. Fourth, maintaining proper health and hygiene can avoid possible contaminants that lead to diseases and viruses. Simple tasks such as proper handwashing decrease the risks of infection. Allow the newest trend to follow celebrities and their belief in the frequency of washing does not mean it is what is best for everyone. Eliminating germs from the body and hard surfaces significantly decreases the potential for a widespread outbreak. Lastly, decreasing stress will help the body function at its full potential, but reducing stress looks different for everyone. Some may find comfort in yoga and meditation, while others enjoy losing themselves in a good book or talking with a friend. Finding downtime to rest and recover allows the mind and physical body to rebuild. If people follow a healthy lifestyle and incorporate these five tenets of healthy living, the world can avoid future pandemics and maintain normalcy. I want to work in health sciences to teach others how to implement these strategies to live healthy lifestyles.
A Dog Changed My Life Scholarship
Lulu, a small beagle, lay sleeping under my Christmas tree. That sweet puppy was a gift from my mother and would become my new best friend. She was my new hunting dog. I took her for walks around the neighborhood while we hunted rabbits with my bow and arrow, and afterward, I would give her treats if she spotted any prey. She cuddled around my legs when I slept and would lick my face in the morning. I loved Lulu, but I didn't realize how much until my parents announced their divorce. The announcement had me rocked; it felt like my brain had slammed against my skull like I was in a constant state of falling through an endless void of dark blackness. I would be moving from my childhood home, changing schools, and "stepping up" as my little brother's keeper. I was overwhelmed, to say the least, but Lulu was there for me. She seemed to know when I was upset, and she would place her head on my lap in comfort. I could talk to her about anything without worrying about judgment or fears, and she always seemed to understand. Lulu became more than my best friend. She was my therapist, my comforter, and my partner in mischief. If I accidentally broke something, Lulu did it. This excuse saved me many times. My mom would just put Lulu in her cage and clean the mess. Lulu never held it against me; she came back with her sweet puppy eyes and offered love in the form of licks to the face. My parents' divorce was one of the most challenging things I have experienced, but Lulu made it bearable. Knowing I had her by my side meant I could get through it. Lulu taught me to love unconditionally. A relationship deserves to be all in, without judgment. The love Lulu showed me taught me that it is not only okay to love with everything you have but is sincerely important. Lulu taught me that no matter what happens, things will work out. That sweet dog taught me survival skills, both emotional and physical. Lulu taught me that it is good to get your feelings out and talk about your fears. Her droopy ears heard all of mine, and have given me the strength to express how I feel through conversation rather than arguments. Her final lesson was about loss. Lulu did not die. She either ran away or someone took her. Losing her was hard because she was my best friend, but I know that everything ends. In the end, it is not about what is gone but what was shared and learned along the way. Lulu taught me to live in the moment and enjoy each step of the journey. I will cherish the memories and live in the moment with the passion that Lulu shared with me in my childhood. The invaluable lessons she taught me will always be a part of who I am today.

I have always had a passion for personal fitness and wellness. From the experience I have gained throughout high school, I realized I want to use my love of fitness and open a gym focused on strength training to help people reach their fitness goals. The concept gym that I plan will have both a physical location and the opportunity for home visits for more private and individualized client needs. I would love to be able to run fitness camps for young athletes and work one-on-one with individuals. Additionally, I plan to be a master trainer and teach others to become fitness coaches. I have taken advanced courses in Health Sciences such as Anatomy and Physiology, Advanced Health Sciences and obtain an American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification. Outside of the classroom, I have pursued additional learning opportunities on my own. After completing the FAFSA, I qualify for federal loans in the amount of $5500 for my first year. My parents do not have additional income to be able to help pay for college, and we have endured a difficult year financially due to COVID. I worked to help with family bills and exhausted my savings to keep my family from financial ruin. Just the mention of COVID19 brings chills and fears to many. The year 2020 brought change that we never imagined. As if out of a horror movie, schools and businesses closed. Store shelves sat empty, patrons hoarding essential items such as toilet paper and hand sanitizer. People locked themselves in their homes as if anticipating a zombie apocalypse. Yet, the world still turned, and we kept on living. For many, stress and fear led their lifestyle, some even got sick due to worries and anxieties. People started to die, and hospitals were understaffed. The thought that if you ended up in a hospital, you might as well sign your death certificate labored in many people’s minds. When I was five, Petee, my dog, went “hunting” with me every day. We walked the neighborhood, and he would sniff out the neighborhood squirrels and rabbits. His soft bay alerting me to our prey. As he tugged slightly on the leash, I would aim the bow and arrow in their direction, hoping to hit the target. All but one time, we returned home empty-handed. After each hunt, Petee would curl up at the foot of my bed and warm my feet as we drifted off to sleep. Petee meant the world to me, and I still miss him sometimes. When he died, I felt like my world had ended. I was six, and he was my best friend. But, so many stories and memories stay with you over time. Petee is much like Old Dan and Little Ann from my favorite book, Where the Red Fern Grows. I listened to the book on tape and had my mom read it until I could recite every word without even looking at the pages. I admired Billy. He set goals for himself and let nothing stop him from reaching those goals. Billy used his entrepreneurial spirit to earn money to buy his dogs by selling bait and blackberries. Billy taught me that working hard for what you want and setting goals is a path to success and happiness. The lessons I learned from reading Where the Red Fern Grows I carry with me into adulthood. Enjoy the outdoors. Take time to help others. Work hard to achieve your goals. Love with everything you have. Love and loyalty are qualities that make a person or a dog lovable. I have always loved my dogs; each has taught me valuable life lessons, just like Old Dan and Little Ann.

Being financially astute can involve so many good choices. Financial responsibility consists in living within our means. Knowing what income you have and not spending more is the first step to being financially stable. Taking this one step further would mean including a savings plan in your expenses. Try to save at least fifty percent of your earnings. Second, learn about various types of investments available to build a passive income. Stock markets can be volatile, and there is a strong possibility you can lose your investment. All investments come with risk. Understanding ways to ensure your assets is an excellent choice to become financially astute. Insurance agents are a dime a dozen, so it is equally important to find the right agent to ensure your investments and look for the best possible options. It is essential to invest in yourself. Can you achieve a higher pay or better job with additional certifications or degrees? Stay on top of it. Constantly seek ways to improve your financial standing. Review your budget. If you receive a raise, save the difference. The year of COVID taught us many things, including the value of financial responsibility. If you lost your job today, would you have enough savings to continue to live as you are? The economy can change instantly; financial responsibility allows you the freedom to be affected less by these changes because you have planned for the future and prepared your money to adjust accordingly.

    Shawn’s Mental Health Resources Scholarship
Fishing has always been my happy place, so I was more than happy to describe how fishing has helped me when I found this scholarship. Fishing has many benefits; some are physical, some are social, and some are intrapersonal. For example, improving mental health is a high-stakes concern in today’s world. Fishing can help improve one’s mental health because it develops intrapersonal skills by allowing one to commune with nature, meditate, take risks, and build independence. Finding time to relax in a busy world can be very difficult. Because of this, we see an increase in suicides and other health issues related to depression and an over-taxed mind. Learning to relax is vital to improving mental health. A day on the boat or the shoreline, watching the gentle movement of the water and hearing the sounds of the water hitting the shore or the boat is mentally relaxing. These sounds are so soothing that sleep machines have been developed to mimic them due to their calming effects. Ocean waves are one of the most popular sounds on these sleep machines. When you fish, you get these sounds for free in the natural environment. Studies have shown that nature has a calming effect on the mind. It reduces stress, anger, fear, and generally unpleasant feelings. Releasing the negative energy is good for the body as well as the soul. So when you are fishing, you are surrounded by nature. Your brain naturally absorbs the positive effects and refreshes the body. Studies have shown that spending time in nature positively impacts the body and reduces blood pressure, tension, and heart rates. So fishing has a positive impact on the body both mentally and physically. Learning to calm the mind is a skill that has gone to the wayside. The latest generations, myself included, are balancing more and more. Our mind rattles with advanced classes, finding independence, completing homework, volunteering, sickness, food, friends, work, and so much more; therefore, it is critical to find a way to silence the mind. Letting go of your troubles can be done when you are fishing. Physically away from your regular day, your mind can find a meditative state. It is not necessary to think about anything but letting the line fly. The sounds help your mind let go, and even if it is for just a short time, the brain can relax. Relaxation leads to better thoughts and decisions.

Image yourself sitting in a ten-foot metal johnboat. You row yourself twenty-five yards from the shore and settle in for the afternoon. It’s just you and a handful of worms that will not make the return journey. The wind lifts your hair ever so slightly and cools your skin from the heat of the warm sun. The boat gently rocks you like a baby ready for a nap as splashes of lake water cover your skin with a mist as the water meets the edge of the boat. There is a stillness in the air that quiets your thoughts. You reach out your hand and grab the small container holding your only companions on today’s journey. Your eyes settle on the wiggly, fat one, and without another thought, you grab the juicy delight and place him on the hook at the end of your pole. You smile at the memory of your granddad taking you fishing as a child. You could barely keep up with his long strides to the shoreline where the two of you fished. The rod was once his. You get these sounds for free in the natural environment when you fish.

My heart filled with pride as I took the keys from my dad. I was just sixteen, a newly licensed driver, and I was being handed the keys to my first car, a 2011 Acura TL. Not only was the car leading Honda’s luxury brand in reliability and performance when it was in its prime, and now it was mine. That feeling of joy vanished all too quickly. I discovered the oil pump leaked, a $5000 repair. And just as quickly as I swelled with pride, I was deflated. I worked a year to save that much money, and now I faced having to spend all of my savings on a single repair. I took the estimate to my stepdad, John. The only one I knew with experience working on cars. Finally, a sliver of hope came to me; he said he would teach me how to replace the engine and learn a skill along the way. I found an engine from a crash test vehicle with only 167 actual miles listed for $2,000. After several shipping mishaps, the engine arrived two weeks later, but the engine swap was not destined to be before the start of the school year. The lead mechanic, my stepdad, contracted COVID and was hospitalized with pneumonia. Hours of planning and anticipation, once again put on hold. With everything set to go in, we were faced with many unknowns. I waited, hoping for his recovery and return home. He was one of the lucky ones, who left the hospital alive, and he helped me revive my car. I learned how to repair many issues on my car, and feel comfort in knowing I have a skill set that is rare in today’s world.

After pulling an all-nighter studying for the test, I got to class tired, received my test, and blanked. It was as if everything I had done in the last twenty-four hours were wiped from my brain. I panicked, leafing through the test, hoping that something would come back to me. Then, in what felt like seconds, the test was over, and so was my life, or so it seemed at the time—another failing grade. Something had to change. Has this ever been you? Studying for hours, cramming for the test, thinking you would be okay, and bam, nothing when it came time to show what you know? This was me until I learned to make different study habits. Then, I realized what I was doing would never work for me. Waiting until the last minute is never a good idea. So I learned to take notes differently during class. Instead of jotting down random thoughts, words, or phrases sporadically on my paper, I divided my paper into two columns and left space at the bottom. During class, I made relevant notes on the right column. At the end of class, I wrote a lecture, lab, or discussion summary. Then after class, I would write potential questions that my notes could answer in the left column. Each day before the test, I could spend five to ten minutes asking myself the questions I wrote. If I did not know the answer, I could review the notes. When I took notes from texts, I divided my paper in the same way. But this time, I would turn the headings and bold words into questions before reading. Then while I read, I could write the answers in the notes. My study habits improved significantly, and I became an honor student.

My dream job is one where I can find a healthy work-life balance, enjoy the people I work with, and love what I do. My dad once offered me the advice to find something you love to do, so it never feels like work. His advice has stuck with me. As a result of this advice, what I want most is not measurable—success, happiness, love, and kindness. I am studying kinesiology and plan to make my ideal career in this field. I would love to work with athletes using this degree, teaching young minds how to build the body for optimal injury prevention. In addition, to have the ability to help them should an injury require post-injury rehabilitation. This path has several options, but I would like to work as a physical therapist to include nutrition, fitness, and whole-body wellness. This would allow me to combine my knowledge and passion for sports with my skills in athletic training. My dream job would allow me time to build additional income streams and a steady income. I know it is essential to look to the future, not just the right now. After watching so many people lose their jobs and face uncertainty during 2019 and 2020 due to the pandemic, I want to make sure I am never faced with such an obstacle. Therefore, my ideal job will allow me to continue to invest in my investment portfolio. Creating a secondary income stream is a part of my dream job. His advise are words I live by looking for the perfect job to fit my passion.

I have always had a passion for personal fitness and wellness. From the experience I have gained throughout high school, I realized I want to use my love of fitness and open my own business to help people reach their fitness goals. I have taken advanced courses in Healthy Sciences such as Anatomy and Physiology, Advanced Health Sciences, and Practicum in Pharmacy Tech. I had the opportunity to perform simulated clinicals and obtain an American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification. Upon passing the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board test, I will also receive a Pharmacy Technician Certification. These courses are designed to promote the study of health sciences and allow students to pursue a program with placement opportunities immediately after high school. These courses were excellent compliments to my advanced health science curriculum at school. Putting my knowledge of fitness and the human body to work immediately, I began to implement various types of training to develop muscle stability for injury prevention myself. Seeing my dramatic personal results, my teammates questioned how I made such powerful changes. Using my newly acquired knowledge base, I established my first private training client and implemented a fitness and nutrition program with him. He immediately saw gains in muscle mass and loss in body fats. Using his testimony, I slowly grew my client base and established my first entrepreneurial adventure. I quickly learned that I did not have enough knowledge in marketing to grow the business as quickly as I had hoped. To achieve my goal of owning a successful fitness business, I have enrolled at Texas Wesleyan University to pursue a degree in Business Management. I am on track to graduate with a bachelor's degree in two years. I selected Texas Wesleyan because it is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, known for the demands in the beauty and wellness industry and high valued businesses. The mentorship at Texas Wesleyan is well-established and will help me secure valuable relationships and mentors. I will be taking practical classes in marketing, business development, law, and ethics. Texas Wesleyan has a 60% placement rate and an 85% employment rate for its graduates in the business program. I will also have the opportunity to participate as a student-athlete as a player on the Texas Wesleyan Football team. I will have the chance to work with their athletic trainers or assistant coaches as a student coach. Working as a student coach will allow me advanced opportunities to implement and develop my knowledge in personal training for student-athletes, injury prevention, and injury recovery. Texas Wesleyan University offers both a 100% online and in-person Master's degree in Business Management. These programs give me plenty of options to advance my education with a master's degree. The knowledge I acquire while pursuing my degree will help me expand my existing business and build additional income streams to create financial stability.

The most beneficial piece of financial advice I have ever received is invest in yourself first. By investing in yourself you fill your bucket before you are depleted. Bold Goals Scholarship
Defining one’s life goals is of utmost importance. As a senior, I feel that we spend so much time living in the future and we can easily forget to live in the present. Happiness and success drive my passions and decisions about my future. I know that no matter where I land, I will find love, kindness, and success. I plan to attend a four-year college and med school. Although my final career path is undecided. We are a middle-income family, and do not enjoy a lot of excesses; therefore, furthering my education is a lofty goal. Especially since I do not wish to graduate with more debt than I can possibly pay back in a lifetime. I believe it is important to look to the future, not just the right now. I will invest in my savings and look for multiple ways to build a secure future. I want to invest in real estate by purchasing a multi-family home such as a quadruplex or a duplex. Building a better future with residual income is a smart choice, and the real estate market in North Texas is a hot market.

Life is about living. The past is behind us, the future is a possibility, but life is about living in the present. Finding balance in life is how I plan to achieve a successful present. Being present in the moments as I live them, taking chances, putting down the cell phone and living in the moment with friends and family are all ways I plan to succeed at life. If you search Google for “Fred Coleman,” you will find that he played in the XFL and NFL, won a Super Bowl, is from Tyler, Texas, and graduated with a law degree from the University of Washington, but what you won’t see is the most genuine, humble, personable, hardworking, mentor, father, and friend that I know. Fred is the youngest of eight children and now has two children of his own. Family is important to him, and being in his circle means you are family. Fred Coleman is my trainer and mentor. His wisdom and workouts prepared me for my varsity football season at Braswell and the college football journey that I will embark on this fall. He has taught me to be relentless in my drive for success and to meet each challenge with a smile. Every time we meet to train, he greets me with a big grin and a heart full of kindness. During training sessions, he pushes me beyond my limits and never lets me give up on myself. Drill after drill, we work to improve whether it is in the heat of July or the rain of March. He has instilled in me the ability to move on the field without thinking, the value of believing in yourself, and that no amount of talent will succeed if hard work is not paired with it. Fred’s love and passion are apparent in every action he takes. This dedication motivates everyone around him, and his charism is contagious. His positive energy, candid attitude, encouragement, and kindness will follow me into each chapter of my life. As a teacher and coach, he works to produce well-rounded, respectful athletes who strive to reach their personal best. He encourages not only the more talented athletes but also those who struggle to keep learning and to try to improve their skills and realize their potential. The world needs more leaders like Fred Coleman. However, if you ask Fred if he is a leader, he will grin sheepishly and say that he does not see himself as a leader. In most cases, he avoids the spotlight and would rather let the light shine on others. Despite this, Fred is a neighborhood hero to many, and his inspiration extends far beyond the Texas community where he lives and teaches. Coach Coleman continues to create a legacy of excellence for those fortunate enough to become his students, colleagues, friends, and family. I have been inspired by the actions and attitude of Fred Coleman. I cannot think of a harder working individual who believes in success through hard work. If you had asked me who I looked up to as a small child, my answer would have been different. Fred does not let anything stand in his way, and he accepts no excuses. He believed in me even when I struggled to find that strength in myself, and I have watched him do this for countless others as well. I have had many great people in my life who have supported me, counseled me, and even coached me, but Fred has done these and inspired me. It is for these reasons that I look to Fred for more than coaching.

    Bold Fuel Your Life Scholarship
Six AM and my alarm goes off. I roll out of bed, dress for practice, and grab my breakfast. It is early, but my mom is up. I give her a soft kiss on the forehead and she tells me to have a good day. I head out the door to my car and take a moment to be thankful. It took me a month, but the car runs good as new since I replaced the engine and transmission. I start the car and listen to the purr of the engine for a brief second. I pick up Andrew and Tyson as we head to the field to lace up our cleats for the last week as a team. We will be heading off in different directions soon. These moments together have shaped me, and their support and friendship have gotten me through the good times and the hard times. So many things fuel my life, but my lifeblood has been my family and my friends. My teammates and I spend time together both on and off the field. They have become family. The support and love that I give and receive from both blood relatives and "framily" is immeasurable, and as my teammates and I choose different paths, it is these moments that will stay with me because these moments have made me the man I am today, and I couldn't be more proud of each of them.
    Bold Joy Scholarship
Joy is found in the everyday. I love to look for joy and happiness in the mundane everyday acts of life. Taking home the win at a football game, finding time to hit the gym and get a good workout in, a date with my girlfriend as we cook dinner for each other, the laughter of my little brother, watching a movie with my family, taking a road trip with my mom, my teammates getting offers to play college football, and seeing them commit to these schools. All of these small things bring me joy. Keeping my eyes open and taking the time to find joy in the little things keeps me happy. If we do not take the time to see the small things and we only look for the big things to find the joy we will miss out on most of life. I actively look for the small successes and the feel-good moments to actively seek joy in my life.
    Graduate Debt-Free Scholarship
As a rising entrepreneur I would like to invest in multi-family housing. This would allow me to use the equity of the housing along with the rent to invest in additional housing units. Using this passive income, I would like to pay for my college to graduate debt free. In addition, I am working tirelessly to apply to as many scholarships that I qualify for to shrink the rising costs of tuition.
    Pandemic's Box Scholarship
COVID-19 changed many things in 2019 and 2020. However, I saw a positive impact on my life. I was able to get a job and worked additional hours with a pay increase as an essential worker. I felt fortunate to get this opportunity with so many people being laid off due to the virus. School was a different story; we saw many changes. Many companies offered free education courses, which I took advantage of. During 2019 and 2020, I was also able to build my knowledge base by taking advantage of free online training classes. I obtained a personal trainer certificate as well as certifications in nutrition, TRX, HIIT, and coaching fitness. I believe that education is an ongoing life-long journey. Finding ways to advance myself is something I will continue to do in the future both in personal health and wellbeing as well as the profession I settle into after college. COVID may have altered life as we knew it, but it didn’t stop the world from spinning, and learning to advance in the unknown is something that I learned to navigate. I will continue to grow emotionally, physically, and mentally every day as I move into my future.
    Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
I was a freshman in high school when I found the bottom of the bottle. I had emptied every liquor bottle my parents owned, and I still found no comfort. Seeking other means to numb the pain, I sought out someone who would sell me marijuana. For just $100 I was able to buy a bag from a peer. I took it home and contemplated what to do next. It wasn't even lite for a full minute when the door to my bedroom swung open and mom burst in. I managed to make myself feel worse as I saw the hurt in her eyes. She sat with me and began her story, one I never had a clue about. She was hospitalized twice for depression. Once when she took some pills and the second she asked for help. I never knew that she battled with depression. I never knew I was like her and help was out there. I never knew she saw a counselor to deal with her inner demons. She had hidden this from me my whole life. Her story gave me new hope. I knew that help was available when I did not feel my best. This experience has helped me relate to my girlfriend who is diagnosed with depression and bi-polar disease. I understand when she says she feels "off" and cannot explain it. This has also influenced my decision to pursue a degree in biomedicine. I want to be able to find solutions to these issues that go beyond medicine and help others find balance and comfort.

After working a twelve-hour shift at Sonic. I was exhausted, dirty, and hungry. The moment I walked in the door, mom handed me a bag of trail mix, grabbed our travel bags, and headed to the truck. She gave me five minutes to change out of my work clothes. It was almost midnight when she put the truck in reverse and backed out of the driveway. We talked for about an hour before I finally dozed off in the passenger seat. The engine rumbled to a stop, and I slowly opened my eyes. It was nearly two in the morning. We had stopped. I was not sure where we were, but I knew we were somewhere in Arkansas on our way to Delta State University. Alone in the truck, I took an assessment of my surroundings. Not much here except the hotel where we had parked. My mom had taken two days off of work to take me to three different football camps in four days, starting with Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. After a long Thursday camp, we packed the truck and drove to Arkansas for camp #2. Lather, rinse, repeat. Our final destination before home was northern Oklahoma for camp #3. Four days, four states, three camps, and six admission tours. The trip was a whirlwind. Our summer continued just like it began. Every weekend, we traveled to some football camp and attended one admission tour after another. She drove while I slept. Her support has helped me achieve a stronger athletic prowess, healthier eating habits, a desire to work harder, and humbling as well. I am incredibly blessed to have someone who supports not only my athletic dreams but also my academic excellence.

"Patience, good things come to those who wait." Is something that my mom has instilled in me. I know that I must wait for the right opportunity, the right time, and the right people. Learning patience through fishing has taught me the biggest fish often take the longest to find the hook, but they are worth waiting for.
    Bold Self-Care Scholarship
Self-care is one of the most focused pieces of health and wellness in today's world. I practice self-care in a variety of ways each day. Self-care does not look the same each day because it begins with listening to your body. Yesterday, I began my self care routine in the evening when I returned home after football practice. We practiced in the cold rain, and a chill ran through my body. As soon as I arrived home, I took a warm shower and changed clothes. After a hard practice, my stomach grumbled with hunger. Fortunately, dinner was already prepared, and I sat to satisfy my hunger with spaghetti. On Sunday, self-care looked more like lounging in my pajamas and napping between snapchats. The body needs recovery time. I listened to what my body needed, and rested for a full recovery. Knowing when to rest is vital to allowing the body to grow and maintain health. I relax other days by playing my guitar or reading a good book. Falling into the story as I watch the characters develop. Going to a movie or watching a play or football game is also a way I can unwind and allow the body recovery time. Each of these self-care methods works for me. Working these into a busy schedule helps me to give my best self to the activities I am involved in regularly such as school and work.
    Bold Friendship Matters Scholarship
I was on my way to school when she called. She was sobbing uncontrollably, and I couldn't make out the words. I changed direction, and went straight to her house. Much to my surprise, police cars, an ambulance, and a coroner littered her driveway. Without knocking I made my way past the unwelcomed visitors to embrace her. The body on the cart I pasted on my way in, was her mom. She died in her sleep. I cannot even begin to image the emotions that coursed through her at that moment. Her dreams, expectations all shifted in a mere heartbeat. I held her tight. Thankful for the chance to help her through these difficult times, I made meals, ran errands, made arrangements, greeted friends and family as they arrived offering condolences. Friendship is knowing what is needed and stepping in to help. Sometimes, it is a soft ear to listen, other times it is offering advice. Friendship is not defined by a single act, but the love that is given. Friendship means helping others become their best self. Supporting them in times as well as celebrating their successes.
    Bold Investing Scholarship
Invest in something that will give you passive income is the one piece of advice that I took to heart. I invested in the stock market and allowed my money to grow on it's own. Additionally, I am looking to purchase some multi-family housing units. This will allow me to use my income from the rental units to finance my future purchases.
    Bold Longevity Scholarship
Maintaining a healthy life is the best preventative medicine for everyone. In 1735 Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Although he was referring to fire prevention, the quote applies to healthy living as well. Small children in schools often take “wiggle breaks.” This is time for them to stand up, jump around, and wiggle out some energy. It does not matter if you are in a small space or you have room to roam. Get active. Second, maintaining a healthy weight is critical for the body to perform at its best. It is all too easy to grab a meal on the go from a fast-food chain. These habits have led to an increase in obesity. Big, maybe beautiful, but it is not healthy. Making healthy choices can be a difficult task but will also lead to the body’s ability to fight infection much more effortlessly. Lastly, decreasing stress will help the body function at its full potential. Decreasing stress does not look the same for everyone. Some may find comfort in yoga and meditation, while others enjoy losing themselves in a good book or talking with a friend. Finding downtime to rest and recover allows the mind and physical body to rebuild.
    Bold Growth Mindset Scholarship
It takes courage to step into a new world and learn new skills, but learning three completely different skill sets takes time, courage, and determination. Therefore, advancing my education through both traditional instruction as well as hands-on experiences is critical to me. Maintaining a growth mindset is taking risks, looking for ways to improve, and having an eagerness to learn new things. I believe that learning never stops. We will all face obstacles in life, but without a growth mindset, these obstacles become warriors. Drawing on positive energy helps to keep a steady mind and focus on your goals. Always striving to be better than you were yesterday and understanding that learning can come from any source.
    Bold Memories Scholarship
When I was twelve, my parents divorced. My mother sat us down and told an eight and four-year-old that their parents were getting a divorce. It felt like my brain had slammed against my skull, like falling through an endless void of dark blackness. It made me feel empty, a pitch-black settling over my thoughts. My mother moved us into a little three-bedroom rental house. Taking care of my brother became my responsibility. Most days, I dragged my brother out of bed, skipped breakfast because we didn't have much left to eat, and headed to school. I walked him to his class every day. When school ended, I picked up my brother and we walked. When we got home I had to help him with his homework, do the dishes, do my homework, and clean the kitchen. It was horrid and extremely stressful, but I knew I had responsibilities for my family. I continued my daily tasks of taking my brother to school, helping him with his work, cleaning, doing my work, and feeding me and my brother. This wasn't easy for an eight-year-old under these circumstances. Although we made it work because we had to. It made me mature and learn to act as more of a gentleman than most. I'll forever have a strong bond with them because of this. My parent’s divorce was hard on me, really hard. Although having to do all of the extra work and helping with my brother has helped shape me into the young man I am today. It caused me to grow up and help raise my little brother and caused us to have a strong bond. I almost became a brother and a father figure to him because of it.
    Bold Motivation Scholarship
Success. A word my mother has ingrained in my mind. There is a recipe for success, and it starts with a goal. Where do you want to be? What do you want to achieve? When do you want to achieve it? And most importantly, have you shared this goal with others? Motivation is a derivative of this process. What are my goals? I want to play college football and complete my college education with a degree that allows me to both stay in the field of sports and help others in the medical field. This is a four year goal with steps along the way. First, I must get accepted to a four year college or university. Second, I must be offered a spot on their football team. Acceptance to the school is easy, work hard in high school. Get good grades, learn the material. Demonstrate drive and determination. All of these skills will carry me forward to find my success. Each successful step along the way allows me to set another goal. The possibilities are endless. I am intrinsically motivated to find my personal success.

When I was twelve, I asked my mom to take me to a Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum. As we wandered around, I marveled at the uniqueness of each record from the tallest man to the longest fingernails. On our next trip, we visited a Myth Busters Museum where I explored concepts such as if we get less wet when we run through the rain instead of walking. These trips only made my curiosity for science grow. Fast forward a few years to middle school, and I found myself working to compete in the area Middle School Science Fair with my ballistics test. Did certain bullets travel at a faster velocity? Did those bullets cause more or less damage? What was the density of the impact? While I did not win the competition, I had fun answering questions, and learning along the way. When COVID closed our school at the end of my Junior year, I did some self-exploration courses in health nutrition, physical movement, and fitness training. I zoomed right through the classes and have been able to guide my friends toward a healthy lifestyle. As a High School student, I excelled in Science classes. My junior year, I enrolled in an advanced training class in Health Sciences where I became CPR certified with the American Red Cross, and learned basic skills in health services. I considered taking the senior course for Emergency Medical Training, but unfortunately, this course did not fit my schedule. So, I switched gears and registered for the Pharmacy Tech course. Both classes offer a professional certification at the end of the course. As a graduating senior, I will be able to enter the skilled workforce as a pharmacy tech helping others in a much-needed medical field.

I love to help the younger football players learn new skills, but I also love to help my peers. My favorite way to help others to to work with my teammates to develop healthy eating habits and strength and conditioning goals. It is common for me to bring my teammate, Tyson, to the gym as my guest and develop a plan to strengthen his shoulder, which was injured early in the season. I have been coaching my teammates on recruiting strategies as well. We talk about what videos are best to use for highlight reels and how to send an email to a coach to get noticed. The day my best friend, Tyson, received his first offer to play college football was a shining light in my day. I know that he has the talent to go far, and he just needed a little guidance to get noticed. I want to help him achieve his best self!

I once read, “Leadership is not a title or a position; leadership is a selfless action we give with our positive attitude and effort that happens to influence others to do the same.” I felt this quote in my heart was the very definition of leadership. Servant leadership, understanding others, and actions are the most essential qualities of leadership to me. Great leaders are not just great achievers; they bring others along with them by sharing their qualities. Servant leadership allows the community to develop leaders and successors. Growing the community you are leading ensures a successful future. I want to help people. It is my goal to be a medical professional. I have already started that journey through dual credit classes in high school. I have found comfort in my medical courses, knowing that my work will save lives. I will graduate high school with a Pharmacy tech certificate, and I plan to go farther than that. I am looking into studying Physical or Occupational Therapy. I want to work to help make people mobile and physically fit. Being our best physically is very empowering. Unfortunately, not everyone is born with that power, and not everyone is lucky enough to keep that power. So as a Physical Therapist or an Occupational Therapist, I will be able to help others find physical strength and power through movement. In addition, I believe that a healthy lifestyle can lead to fewer medical issues. To help others achieve healthy living, I have educated myself with classes outside of my high school in Health and Nutrition, Personal Training, physical movement, and first aid. In addition, I have worked with my teammates and some neighbors to help them develop healthy eating plans to follow to build muscle and lose fat. I have also helped them create workout plans that meet their goals and lifestyle. This past year I worked an average of thirty-five hours per week all year long. I began working at Sonic when the COVID pandemic closed many businesses and forced schools to remote learning. I completed my sophomore year remotely while working close to 35 hours per week. I enjoyed the work and team atmosphere at Sonic. I was quickly promoted to Kitchen Manager and trained new hires as cooks. I worked hard to ensure our work was top-notch. Those efforts did not go unnoticed because I was then promoted to Shift Leader and given a key to the store at age 17 with the promise of advancing to Assistant Manager when I turned 18. Watching others find success has been a rewarding part of my life. Helping others find happiness, health, and success will always be a passion for me. As I grow, so will my leadership and the leadership capacity I build as I help my friends and colleagues.

Volunteer opportunities taught me patience above all else. Working with young children involves chasing butterflies, kicking dirt, and waving at mom in the stands in addition to teaching and learning basic skills. However, the joy the kids receive when they score or they make a great play is like nothing you can imagine. Patience has great rewards! When I was twelve, my parents divorced. My mother sat us down and told an eight and four-year-old that their parents were getting a divorce. It felt like my brain had slammed against my skull, like falling through an endless void of dark blackness. I don't even remember going to school much of that week. My parent’s divorce was hard on me, really hard on me. Although having to do all of the extra work and helping with my brother has helped shape me into the young man I am today. It caused me to really grow up and help raise my little brother and caused us to have a strong bond. I almost became a brother and a father figure to him because of it.

I sat at the lunch table, alone. As I looked around the cafeteria, I noticed everyone had someone to talk to and laugh with. Everyone, except me. I was the new kid. I did not know any of these kids. I sat and picked at my lunch, not feeling very hungry. I moped wishing I had just one friend. That was when I heard a boy ask me why I say by myself. "Hey," I felt a tap on my shoulder. The boy was talking to me. "Sit with us," he said. My heart filled with joy as I began to laugh with the other boys. I was no longer alone. The legacy I wish to leave behind is inspired by that single interaction. I want to leave behind a legacy that inspires kindness and support of my peers. When I can be anything I want, I want to be kind. Kindness offered to me when I was feeling alone, helped me make it through another day. Since that day, I have gone out of my way to ensure others feel supported and loved.

Texas is my home. Being a Texan is not big hats and cowboy boots anymore. Though our history does bring the Texas Rangers and Cattle Drives, it has grown to be so much more. Being a Texan means using my independence to help others, knowing my neighbors, and taking care of each other. "Howdy neighbor" is not just a phrase; it is a way of life. Taking care of yourself, your neighbor, and the state helps sustain where we come from. Texas has always been a home to all walks of life. Being Texan is about freedoms, open roads, and barbeques. We celebrate with our friends, and disagree on politics, but at the end of the day, being Texan means being one family, one state, one nation, Texas.

That feeling of joy was all too quickly gone when I took my car in for an airbag recall. Although Acura replaced the airbag, what they found shocked me. The oil pump leaked, a $5000 repair. And just as quickly as I swelled with pride, I was deflated. I worked a year to save that much money, and now I faced having to spend all of my savings on a single repair. I took the estimate to my stepdad, John. He once owned a car shop which meant he knew his way around a car. Finally, a sliver of hope came to me; he said he would teach me how to replace the engine and learn a skill along the way. I began my search for a replacement engine. After weeks of searching for the best engine within my price range and calling shop after shop with little to no luck, the disappointment started to return. Then, just when I felt like I wanted to give up, I found an engine from a crash test vehicle with only 167 actual miles listed for $2,000. I knew I had to have that engine. Step by greasy step, I loosened bolts, removing pieces of my car until finally there was nothing but a shell. The engine and transmission were out and ready for the swap. We realized we had hit another stumbling block. The new engine and transmission were not the same as the old, yet another obstacle to overcome mid-surgery. The new set-up was a 2012 six-speed key start, but my car was a 2011 five-speed push-button start. With everything set to go in, we were faced with many unknowns and a shell for a car. Although my car is still not breathing I am still hopeful. We have overcome every obstacle so far, and I have no doubt that these are problems we can solve. Although I can make many car repairs, I do not wish to be a mechanic. I am thankful for the time I am spending with my step-dad, and will cherish these moments.

Being a solid person takes many characteristics. I believe I am determined, hard-working, and intelligent. I am willing to problem solve to find solutions, and I am compassionate towards others. It is this compassion I value the most in myself. All the intelligence in the world can work to problem solve, but without compassion for others, problems are not solved. Helping others is that of a servant leader. It is through servant leadership that we lift each other up and soar to new heights. Servant leadership allows the community to develop leaders and successors. Leadership capacity is vital for any leadership role. By helping others and demonstrating a desire to service we build relationships with people. Growing the community you are leading ensures a successful future. Servant leadership allows others to be influential in the leadership, taking in opinions, and feelings. Leaders must understand people to be successful. Building personal relationships helps to establish a culture that shares goals and visions. Steven Covey said, “seek first to understand then to be understood.” People listen often as a means to comment in a sympathetic manner. Most often, people want to share their personal story. Instead, people should learn to listen empathetically. This is an attempt to understand the people, not to add their own personal touch. Effective listening is not simply echoing what the other person has said through the lens of one's own experience. Rather, it is putting oneself in the perspective of the other person, listening empathically for both feeling and meaning. People will do anything for you if they know you truly care. An effective leader leads by example and gives of themselves. Not being afraid to get your hands dirty to help when needed says a lot about the value of the work you expect of others. An effective leader is able to suggest innovative strategies and ways of incorporating these methods with old successful strategies. They understand how these work because they have done the job themselves and are able to see the task from a first hand perspective. They are also not expecting something of someone else they don’t expect of themselves. It is never a “do as I say, not as I do” atmosphere. This helps build an environment of trust. I feel that being a servant leader and using my compassion as a guidepost, I am able to not only elevate myself, but take others along with me. This journey takes a village and we must all work together to succeed because none of us will get out alive. Making the most of the moments together will allow the journey to be worthwhile.

Understanding the concepts of credit cards, basic banking, investments, stocks, and things such as taxes is very important for financial well-being. In defining my future success, I would like to generate as much income as possible while creating as little debt possible. This becomes a difficult task when looking at the rising costs of tuition at a traditional college. However, I am well prepared for the job because I can work, invest, spot potential investment opportunities, play sports, and increase my test scores to obtain merit offers. These plans and efforts will allow me to attend school with a minimal amount of debt. COVID-19 changed many things in 2019 and 2020. However, I did not see a significant impact on my general way of life. I was able to get a job and worked additional hours with a pay increase as an essential worker. I felt fortunate to get this opportunity with so many people being laid off due to the virus. Although my job is considered part-time, many weeks, I have worked more than forty hours. These additional hours have afforded me the ability to save more than $5000 that I will use towards my tuition. My willingness to work extra hours as needed, combined with my openness to learn new skills, has allowed me to advance from cook to shift leader with the promise of assistant manager training upon my eighteenth birthday. I will continue to work for daily income throughout college, whether it is on-campus or off-campus. While I did not feel a significant impact by COVID, it did open my eyes to the importance of having money to fall back on if something happened. Colleges did not decrease in cost despite many people being out of work. I plan to attend a minimum of a four-year college and may also apply to medical school. While I am not 100% certain of the career path I wish to take, I am sure that I will be in the medical field since I do not see the demand for this decreasing anytime soon. I understand that this has the potential of a hefty price tag upon graduation. Since my family has never saved enough money to plan for college, I know that burden will be on me. To decrease college costs, I am pursuing the opportunity to play football in college and hope I can obtain a scholarship. A sports scholarship will allow me to reduce the final cost of tuition over the four years. Many smaller schools cannot offer sports scholarships which makes this goal a bit of an unknown. Financial freedom is achieved when you can take these lessons and apply them to your life. Avoiding negative debt while building assets and net worth. It was more than not relying on others for money or making ends meet. Financial freedom is going out and achieving your own financial success.

Although my career path is undecided. While we are a middle-income family, we do not enjoy a lot of excesses; therefore, I sought an opportunity to further my education myself. I followed my passion and obtained certifications in Personal Training, TRX, HIIT Training, Nutrition and Wellness. These certifications will give me opportunities should I not be able to afford college. I do not wish to graduate with more debt than I can possibly pay back in a lifetime.
    Bold Great Books Scholarship
Naming a favorite book is like calling a famous parent or child. Impossible. There are too many great works in print to name just a single book as a favorite. I have loved many books in my short seventeen years, and each for a different reason. Divergent was the book that I loved because it made me think and question. It was one of the first books I was able to select and read at my on pleasure. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was a favorite for me because it was filled with fantasy and adventure. Watching Harry and his friends lead fun, yet risky, adventures and solve problems was inspiring. Romeo and Juliet taught me that love is boundless and family squabbles can hurt everyone. Avoiding carrying on traditions that are hurtful is a lesson I take with me from Romeo and Juliet. Racing in the Rain was a feel good book that made me wonder what if my dog could talk. This book made my imagination grow. Where the Red Fern Grows is a timeless book that my parents shared with me and I will share with my own children someday. This sits closest to home for me because I see myself in the story. A young, independent boy wanting a hunting dog. Overcoming obstacles and earning the dogs himself, the boy builds a trust and a bond with his dogs. The dogs seem to understand his every need and want. Books let us see the magic in the world. I cannot possibly select a single book as my favorite, but love the lessons that each book has given me.

Improving the lives of the elderly can be challenging. Often they are set in their ways, independent enough to not want to ask for help, and stay to themselves. Helping the elderly in my community is easy. Help does not have to be big tasks, but the everyday tasks that can become difficult. I work to ensure the yards are mowed for the elderly in my immediate neighborhood. I call them once a week to ensure they are healthy, and ask if they need any groceries. I pick up groceries for them and bring the groceries to their door or put them away if asked. I change light bulbs when it has become too difficult or unsafe for my elderly neighbors to use a step ladder. The elders of a community share their stories as a way to pass on knowledge and memories. There is much to learn from them. Sitting and talking with someone who has passed their prime is a wonderful way to improve their lives. They pass on the knowledge, and I hear a wonderful story.

The most helpful piece of financial advise I have ever received came from my mom. She told me to not spend more than I could afford. While this seems like generic, broad advise, it has been helpful. We use credit cards for purchases to take advantage of the cashback offers. However, we never spend more on the credit card than we have in our bank account. Along with this advise, we do not count on money we have not yet received even money earned but not paid out yet. There have been too many companies and schools that folded and closed their doors with no notice leaving their employees high and dry. Therefore, not spending money you do not have is the best advise anyone has ever offered me.

In defining my own future success I would like to generate as much income as possible while creating as little debt as possible. This becomes a difficult task when looking at the rising costs of tuition at a traditional college. A credit card can help students make purchases, learn about cashback bonuses and various other benefits that credit cards offer while learning to live within a balanced budget. Personally, I have been an authorized user of my mother’s credit card since I was seventeen. This has helped me understand how to take advantage of the benefits offered using a credit card such as fraud protection, out-of-country purchases, and building my own credit score. I have been able to make larger purchases using my credit card that earns 1% cashback with purchases. Additionally, I am able to earn another 1% when I pay the balance before the statement closing date. This has been very handy as I had to do many car repairs. I think it is important to note that without active monitoring of cards, it is easy for younger people without experiences such as mine to overspend and end up in a position that is less favorable, often resulting in a low credit score and debt they cannot pay back. This is not the goal of a credit card but does happen. I have been able to live by the rule, only use the card for what is already in my checking account, but I also know if an emergency were to arise, I have an option of using my credit card.
    Bold Influence Scholarship
Being a social media influencer is a high profile position. So many influencers have made bad decisions that effected their following. I would use my influential position to stand for the benefits of a strong healthy lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy life is the best preventative medicine for everyone. Of course, making healthy choices and taking care of your body does not guarantee a person will not ever get sick, but it does limit the risks. In 1735 Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Although he was referring to fire prevention, the quote applies to healthy living as well.
    Bold Independence Scholarship
At age two, I wanted to do everything on my own. I remember my mom getting frustrated because I would make such a mess, but she let me do whatever I said I could until I would either succeed or ask for help. She would shake her head, sometimes laugh, and sometime just turn bright red. I have developed a great sense of personal independence as a result of her teachings. Now that I am older, I will do things on my own without asking for help. I am able to "adult" on my own whereas many of my peers still have their parents cook every meal and wash their laundry. That is not to say I do not enjoy when someone helps me or prepares a meal for me because of course, I do enjoy that pampering. Being independent at age seventeen is important. I know I can take care of myself, but I also know when to ask for expert advise and assistance. My ability to make breakfast, lunch or dinner not just for myself, but for others as well is a skill set that is very important. Changing the oil on my car, can save me money, and potentially open the job market for me if I need to take a job in that field. My independence has allowed me to be successful in the classroom as well. Classes that are self paced, are completed without question on time and successfully. My future does not rest in someone else's hands, but in my own. There is no doubt in my mind that my indepedence will help me achieve all of my goals.

After watching so many people lose their jobs and face uncertainty, I want to make sure I am never faced with such an obstacle. Therefore, I will continue to not only invest in my savings, but also look for multiple ways to build a secure future and comfortable nest egg. I learned that I can build wealth through smart investments. However, with many investments there is the risk that you will lose your money as well. This is why I have invested in the S & P fund for a safe investment as well as some higher risk stocks. I am also looking to invest in real estate. I would like my first purchase to be a multi-family home such as a quadruplex or a duplex. This would allow me to live in a portion, and earn income from the other portion or portions of the building. Building a better future with residual income is a smart choice, and the real estate market in North Texas is a hot market. During 2019 and 2020, I was also able to build my own personal knowledge base by taking advantage of free on-line training classes. I obtained a personal trainer certificate as well as certifications in nutrition, TRX, HIIT, and coaching fitness. I believe that education is an on-going life-long journey. Finding ways to advance myself is something I will continue to do in the future both in personal health and wellbeing as well as the profession I settle into after college. I am pursuing a degree in the medical field; therefore, I feel it is of utmost importance to advance my education to ensure that I am up to date on the latest technologies and advances in medicine and health. COVID may have altered life as we knew it, but it didn’t stop the world from spinning, and learning to advance in the unknown is something that I learned to navigate. I will continue to grow emotionally, physically, and mentally every day as I move into my future. That is the certainty of my unknown next journey.

Optimists see the glass as half full whereas pessimists see the glass as half empty. Staying positive in tough times can be a challenge. Luckily, I am an optimist. I know that everything happens for a reason, and my faith in God allows me to stay positive even in the darkest rooms. I have been working on my car for almost two months now. What should have been a weekend job changing the engine out and replacing it with a new one, has been faced with one obstacle after another. I have not let this get me down. While I am having to borrow someone else's car to get around, and the job has cost me more than twice what I expect it to cost I am still optimistic that the job with be completed. I have the determination to see it through to the end successfully. The light in the darkness has been that I have learned a great deal about my car and how to problem solve to fix things that can go wrong. Staying positive when it feels like everything that can go wrong has has not been easy, but I know there is a greater plan, and I will succeed.
    Bold Love Yourself Scholarship
Loving yourself is the key to happiness, and yet it seems to be one of the hardest things to do. We are raised in an environment that is critical of everyone and everything. Surrounded by social media critics, we learn at a young age to hyper analyze ourselves. However, I have been lucky enough to have a parent who has raised me to accept myself as I am or change what I do not like. One of the things I love most about myself is my determination. I may not be the fastest or the strongest, but I have never let that stand in the ways of my goals. I use that as a motivating factor to improve. Determination to succeed has always allowed me to put my best foot forward and be strong in the face of adversity. Knowing what my goals are has helped me to find various ways to achieve them. I will never give up on my goals, and that is why determination is my greatest strength. I love that I will work hard to problem solve and find solutions where others have given up. Knowing I have this trait will carry me forward to success.

We live in a very media-centric world. Our lives are on display for the world to judge, criticize, and applaud. That means that we are susceptible to highly critical comments on our health and wellness. Popular opinion can make or break someone. Watching the world unfold into chaos around me with war, racial division, suicides, and viruses and diseases have opened my eyes to the importance of physical and mental well-being. It wasn’t until my school closed to prevent the spread of the virus COVID19 that I began my journey to help others. I watched as the news reported businesses and schools closing; it was as if the world stood still. Supply lines stood still. Grocery store shelves stood empty. Neighbors stood in long lines to receive the minimal food being given away for free. Classes at my school became optional as grades for the last quarter did not count. Remote learning was complex at best. Some of my friends did not have internet access where they lived, and others shared a single computer with mom or dad, who worked from home, and their two or three siblings. Learning was the least of their worries. These friends began to struggle with isolation. We were a pack, a team, and being away from our group was difficult for many. During the football season, we had classes together. We met for meals, and we played on and off the field together. Being apart from each other was difficult. The mental impact was hard. The biggest problem facing the world right now is multi-fold. The world faces a crisis with COVID19 as well as education gaps and learning opportunities. If the world cannot find a way to solve one, they will never be able to solve the other.

Image a world where teachers could teach and students felt engaged and wanted to learn. We live in that world on YouTube. Everyday students go to the site and watch how to videos to learn something new. The teachers are creating videos for people to learn from. Image if our teachers had such open forums. Students would be free to explore that which interests them and teachers would no longer have to worry about standards and standardized tests. Data would no longer be a four letter word for teachers, and they would be able to do what they enjoy, teach. By eliminating standardized teachers, the stress that is passed from administrator to teacher to student to parent would be a distant memory. Students would no longer worry that a single test given on one day measuring one way would fail them. Taking away the fears and stresses, students would be more open to explore and a desire to learn would increase. Students would be able to ask questions that pertain to something that interests them. Schools would be able to cater to the needs of the community, job market, and students. As a result, students become life long learners, find a field that interests them, and continue their education and love of learning. The best thing that our government can do for education is to back off. The government needs to trust that teachers are capable of providing students with excellent skills, and let them do their job without interference.

Leadership has so many components to be a good leader. Narrowing those qualities to the most valued has been very difficult. I once read “Leadership is not a title or a position, leadership is a selfless action we give with our positive attitude and effort that happens to influence others to do the same.” I felt this quote in my heart was the very definition of leadership. Servant leadership, understanding others, and actions are the most important qualities of leadership to me.

I have been looking into furthering my education at the collegiate level. As I was looking into colleges and where I might consider attending I came across the cost of tuition per semester, and what I found startled me. I had to do a project in my Dual-Credit Pre-Calculus class where we calculated the cost of college including the cost for student loans and compound interest. When I found out the cost of tuition at an average university I was baffled, and began to fear if I could pay for college or not. The question wasn’t will I get accepted or is this the right path for me. The question became, how will I pay for this? I want to help people. It is my goal to be a medical professional. I have already started that journey through dual credit classes in high school. I have found comfort in my medical classes knowing that my work will save lives. I will graduate high school with a Pharmacy tech certificate and I plan to go farther than that. I am looking into studying Physical or Occupational Therapy. I want to work to help make people mobile and physically fit. Being our best physically is very empowering. Not everyone is born with that power and not everyone is lucky enough to keep that power. So as a Physical Therapist or an Occupational Therapist I will be able to help others find physical strength and power through movement. I understand that many people change their major in college, and that is okay. I might be one of those people. I know that ultimately college will open more doors for me in the medical field, in the personal relationship field, and in my own growth set. I enjoy learning new things. College gives me the opportunity to be a lifelong learner, build connections with people that can also open new pathways for me in my future. College is more than just a building and a degree. It is a place to learn new things, build lasting relationships, and connections that last a lifetime. As a football player, college will give me an opportunity to continue playing a sport that brings me joy, the ability to follow my passion, and bring me a family beyond blood in a place where I will be away from my natural family. These bonds will be unbreakable. A coach once said, “Once you show the coach what you got, he is going to expect it every time!” I believe in that with my whole heart, and college will give me the chance to excel in every part of my life. I work hard everyday in every aspect of my life, and I fully expect to continue that path in college. College will give me the edge I need to be more successful in my career path and my next journey. Although my family has not had many obstacles and tribulations along the way, money will be our largest hurdle to jump. Hopefully, that an be solved with great scholarships like this one.

I have started to invest in the stock market. I have a joint account with my mother, but she lets me do everything on my own. I am able to invest the money I receive from working a part time job into stocks such as Haliburton and the S & P. The S & P is a slow and steady increase with less risk than some of the other stocks. It is my goal to build wealth through investments. Not only am I invested in the traditional stock market, but I am also an investor in Ethereum. While this investment has not taken me far, or made me large dollars on the investment. It is safe in that I will not lose more than my initial investment. Additionally, I have been researching loan options to purchase real estate. I have also looked at several properties to purchase. Ideally I would like to invest in a quadraplex so that I have a housing option as well as the ability to profit from renting out the other parts of the multi-family housing unit. Looking into long term investments and residual income opportunities has allowed me to see how I can build my wealth using some of my own money but also leveraging other sources of funds to make money over time. I have learned that there are additional funds sometimes needed for purchasing real estate and often the bank many not require funds as a down payment but may require money in the bank as a safety net for them to finance your journey as a secure partner. Additionally, I have learned that there are options available depending on where the property is located for financing options and loan types. While each has advantages, they each carry a different disadvantage as well. It is important to look at all aspects of a loan if you are using a loan to invest in real estate. While some ventures are high risk, these also generally turn the highest profit potential. While I am still young, it is the perfect opportunity to invest and build wealth as a n entrepreneur. However, being your own boss also comes with many responsibilities whether it is as a landlord, an investor, or a franchise owner. You are able to set your own hours, but these hours can often be long to keep costs low. Investing in yourself is as important as any other investment you make. The idea that my parents have worked hard their entire lives from an early age has both inspired and motivated me to not only work hard, but to work smart which is what led me to look into long term and short term investments. I am not afraid of hard work but I most certainly would rather work smarter than harder to earn a comfortable living.
