FinalistBio
My name is Benjamin Heiberger, and I am passionate about music, particularly saxophone performance. I have been playing the saxophone for eight years, with a focus on classical saxophone, but I also enjoy exploring other genres like jazz, contemporary, rock, funk, and pop. My life goal is to become a virtuoso saxophonist and a college professor, where I can inspire the next generation of musicians to explore the full range of musical styles. I aim to break the stereotype of saxophone players being confined to jazz, showing that the saxophone can transcend genre boundaries.
I am deeply committed to music education and believe in the power of music to unite and inspire people. As a student at Appomattox Regional Governor's School, I am actively involved in a variety of ensembles, including jazz band, concert band, and guitar ensemble. I also volunteer with organizations like FeedMore and Shalom Farms, and I participate in the High School Adjudication program. These experiences have taught me the importance of community, hard work, and leadership.
I am a great candidate for scholarships because I am dedicated to pursuing my goals with passion and perseverance. My focus on broadening the saxophone's musical potential, combined with my commitment to community service and academic excellence, demonstrates my drive to make a meaningful impact both in music and society. Scholarships will help me continue my studies and achieve my dream of becoming a performing musician and college professor, where I can inspire others to pursue music with the same dedication and love I have.

Froggycrossing's Creativity Scholarship
Creativity is not just about making something new; it’s about seeing the world in a way that others might not and using that perspective to build something meaningful. It’s the ability to take inspiration from seemingly unrelated things and combine them into something fresh, yet authentic. For me, creativity is about transcending boundaries to express ideas in a way that resonates with others, whether through music, writing, or any form of art.
As a musician, creativity is embedded in my practice and performance. The saxophone is my tool, but creativity transforms it into something powerful. When I play, I’m not just following notes; I’m telling a story and engaging with the world. Improvising in jazz or interpreting classical pieces allows me to express emotions that words cannot capture. My creativity flows in the way I approach every performance as an opportunity to explore new ideas. The music becomes a reflection of my inner world, constantly evolving. Creativity is an ongoing process of discovery, and each new idea builds on the last.
Creativity is also about problem-solving and finding new approaches. When faced with a challenging musical passage, I must think creatively about how to break it down. It’s not just memorizing notes—it’s about understanding the emotions, technique, and expression required to bring the music to life. That process of turning a challenge into an opportunity is what makes creativity so rewarding. The same creative thinking applies to all aspects of my life.
Outside of music, creativity shapes how I approach teaching, volunteering, and interacting with others. As a youth soccer coach, I encourage my players to think creatively on the field, approaching the game with an open mind and exploring different ways to solve problems. This mindset translates to my volunteer work at FeedMore, where I use creativity to engage with the community in meaningful ways, whether organizing events or connecting people with resources. Creativity is not just about making something new—it’s about adapting and innovating to improve the world around me.
One of the most powerful things about creativity is its ability to connect people. I believe that the creative process is most impactful when shared. In music, for example, when I perform with others, the act of creating together forms bonds between people. It’s an exchange of ideas and energy that elevates the experience beyond the individual. Whether in a group performance or a team project, creativity becomes a collaborative force that opens new possibilities.
Creativity, to me, is the pursuit of the unexpected. It’s about experimenting with new ideas, embracing failure, and learning from it. Whether in music or life, the joy of creation comes from discovering something new, something that pushes beyond the ordinary. It’s this process that drives my passion and shapes my identity as an artist. Through creativity, I don’t just express myself—I offer others the opportunity to connect with and find meaning in what I create.
In the end, creativity is the key to both personal expression and collective connection. It allows me to break through boundaries, solve problems, and engage with the world in new ways. And in sharing my work with others, I hope to inspire them to think creatively in their own lives, sparking a cycle of innovation that extends far beyond the individual. That, to me, is the power of creativity: its ability to transform the world.

Music, particularly playing the saxophone, is not just an art form for me; it is an expression of emotion, an exploration of sound, and a way to communicate with others on a level that transcends words. From the first time I picked up a saxophone, I knew that this would be more than just an instrument—it would be a lifelong passion. As a musician, my purpose is to break boundaries, to show that music, especially the saxophone, is versatile and capable of crossing genres. My passion for the saxophone stems from its ability to connect with people, its richness in sound, and the profound sense of fulfillment I feel when performing.
Playing the saxophone has shaped the way I approach music and life in many ways. It has become a means of self-expression and a way to process emotions. In jazz, the freedom of improvisation allows me to explore my feelings and create something new on the spot. In classical music, the structure and discipline provide an outlet for precision and emotional depth. This balance between freedom and discipline has taught me valuable life lessons about the importance of both creativity and consistency.
Additionally, my role as a saxophonist has had a profound impact on my interactions with others. Through band ensembles, jazz combos, and performances, I’ve been able to collaborate with musicians from different backgrounds and experience levels. This has not only improved my musical skills but has deepened my appreciation for others’ talents and perspectives. Music, especially when shared with others, has a way of bringing people together, and I’ve witnessed how performances can create connections that last beyond the music itself.
Through my involvement in music, I’ve also learned to approach challenges with perseverance and patience. The saxophone, like any art form, requires continual practice and improvement. There have been countless moments of frustration, but each time I’ve pushed through, I’ve come out stronger. This mindset has influenced my academic and personal life, as I’ve learned to embrace the process of growth and to appreciate the journey, not just the destination.
Moreover, music has allowed me to impact those around me. As a youth soccer coach, I bring the same passion for discipline and creativity to my coaching. Just as I teach my students the importance of teamwork and strategy in soccer, I encourage them to express themselves and approach their own challenges with the same perseverance I apply in music. Whether through performance or volunteer work, I’ve come to understand that music isn’t just for the artist—it’s for everyone. It can bring joy, comfort, and understanding to those who experience it.
Ultimately, the saxophone has given me more than just musical skills; it has provided me with a way to communicate, connect, and inspire others. Whether in a classroom, on stage, or in a community, music has the power to enhance lives, create bonds, and transcend barriers. My passion for the saxophone continues to shape the way I engage with the world, and I am grateful for the opportunities it has given me to make a positive impact on those around me.
Adrienne Pucky Musician's Scholarship
Music, for me, is not just a hobby or career path—it’s a language that transcends words, a force that shapes my emotions, thoughts, and experiences. Since I first picked up the saxophone eight years ago, music has been an integral part of my life, guiding me through moments of joy, sorrow, and everything in between. It’s a form of expression, a way to communicate my innermost feelings when words fall short, and a medium through which I connect with others, whether through performance or sharing music.
One of the most profound ways music has impacted me is through its ability to convey emotion. Whether I’m playing a slow, mournful ballad on the alto saxophone or an upbeat jazz tune with the jazz combo I’m in, making music is deeply personal. Each note I play becomes a reflection of my mood and state of mind. In a way, the act of playing feels like an emotional exchange between the music, my audience, and myself. Performing in a concert or recital often feels like sharing a part of myself that can’t be expressed any other way. That connection is what makes music special to me.
In addition to being an emotional outlet, music has taught me invaluable lessons about discipline and perseverance. Learning to play multiple saxophones—alto, baritone, soprano, tenor, and even bass for a short time—has been a challenge, but it’s pushed me to grow as a musician and a person. Each instrument has unique characteristics and requires different techniques, expanding my understanding of music. Playing in various ensembles, from jazz band to concert band, has also taught me the importance of collaboration and leadership. Music isn’t just about the individual; it’s about working together to create something greater than the sum of its parts.
Music also gives me a sense of belonging. I’ve found a community through the many groups I’ve been a part of—whether it’s the jazz band playing at a local brewery or the concert band preparing for district assessments. These experiences have shown me that music brings people together, no matter their background or personal story. It’s a universal language that crosses boundaries and creates bonds in ways words alone can’t.
On a deeper level, music has given me a sense of purpose. It drives my aspirations to become a professional musician and college professor of saxophone. I believe in the power of music to inspire others, just as it has inspired me. My goal is to show that the saxophone is versatile, bridging classical, contemporary, jazz, and pop music. I want to break the stereotype that the saxophone is only for jazz and show its range through my performances and teaching.
In the end, music is everything to me. It’s how I express myself, keeps me disciplined, connects me with others, and is the foundation of my future career. Music is at the core of who I am, and it will continue to guide me as I grow and take on new challenges. It has shaped my past, and I know it will shape my future as I keep exploring and sharing my passion with others.
Patrick B. Moore Memorial Scholarship
As someone who has always believed in the power of music to connect people, inspire growth, and challenge the boundaries of self-expression, I am deeply committed to making a positive impact on the world by sharing the transformative power of education. Through my future education in music performance, I aim to not only cultivate my own skills but also to pour into the lives of others, helping them to succeed by offering them opportunities for personal and artistic growth.
One of the most powerful ways I believe I can make a difference is by teaching and mentoring future generations of musicians. Music has always been a way for me to understand and connect with others, and I want to give others the same ability. My goal is to become a college professor for saxophone, and in that role, I plan to provide a nurturing and inclusive environment where students can develop their skills, overcome challenges, and gain the confidence to pursue their own musical journeys. Whether I am teaching classical, contemporary, or jazz saxophone, I will strive to ensure that each student feels valued and capable of achieving their goals. I will encourage them to explore various genres, much as I have, so they can see the endless possibilities of what they can create and express. By helping students break through barriers, I can empower them to reach their fullest potential and encourage them to share their voice with the world.
Beyond teaching at the college level, I am passionate about community engagement and outreach, particularly in under served areas. Many young people in these communities may not have access to quality music education, which is why I aim to volunteer as a mentor, offering free lessons or workshops to help bridge that gap. By working with local schools, community centers, and music programs, I can give students from all backgrounds the chance to explore music and develop important life skills, such as discipline, teamwork, and problem-solving. Music is a universal language that can transcend socioeconomic barriers, and I want to be a part of creating an environment where every student, regardless of background, can thrive and discover their talents.
As I grow in my education and career, I also want to continue to collaborate with other musicians and artists from diverse fields to encourage the intersection of various forms of art. This collaboration can inspire students to think beyond traditional boundaries and explore creative ways to combine different genres and disciplines. For example, I plan to work on projects that blend music with visual arts, theater, or dance to create immersive experiences that allow audiences and performers alike to engage with music in new and meaningful ways. By nurturing creativity in all its forms, I hope to inspire students to break out of the traditional molds of artistic expression and help them see the endless possibilities of combining various art forms.
Ultimately, I envision my role as one that not only imparts knowledge but also empowers others to reach their fullest potential. Whether through teaching, mentoring, or community outreach, my goal is to help individuals discover their unique talents, inspire them to push beyond their limits, and encourage them to use their skills to positively impact their communities. Music is a transformative force, and through my education, I will strive to be a conduit for others to find success and fulfillment, knowing that their growth will ripple out into the world in ways they may not even expect.
Holli Safley Memorial Music Scholarship
Music has always been at the center of my life, but it has taken on even greater significance in recent months. I’ve been playing the saxophone for eight years, and my passion for music has shaped who I am today. Over the years, I’ve played all the saxophones—alto, baritone, soprano, tenor, and bass—but the alto and baritone are the instruments that resonate with me the most. Music has always been a way for me to express emotions that words can’t capture, and it has taught me discipline, leadership, and the importance of working together to create something meaningful.
However, music has become even more powerful for me since the sudden passing of my father two months ago. He was my biggest supporter, always there to encourage me in my music and in life. Losing him has been the hardest experience of my life, and the grief is something I’m still working through. We had only just started to bond more deeply, and our relationship was finally growing stronger when I lost him. My dad was the only parent who truly understood me and encouraged my passion for music. He would light up whenever I played for him, no matter what piece I was working on. I would play him songs over and over again, and he’d smile with pure joy. Since his passing, I’ve tried to channel his happiness and passion for art into my music. I feel his spirit with me every time I perform, and I know he would want me to keep playing, to keep pursuing my dreams of becoming a virtuoso.
In contrast, my relationship with my mom has always been more complicated. Unlike my dad, she has always tried to control my choices, particularly with my music. She has pushed me toward a specific path—insisting that I pursue jazz music and attend certain colleges, without considering my own aspirations or the direction I want to take. This constant pressure has led to a strained relationship, and recently, things reached a breaking point when she kicked me out of the house. Now living with my girlfriend, I’ve had to become more independent and self-reliant, especially as I prepare for college and continue to perfect my audition pieces. This new chapter of my life has motivated me to work harder than ever before to achieve my dreams.
Despite the challenges with my mom, I’ve come to realize how much my dad protected me from her need for control. His support gave me the freedom to explore music on my own terms, and it’s because of him that I’ve developed such a strong passion for pursuing a performance degree in classical saxophone. I want to break free from the limitations that others place on me and show that the saxophone is more than just a jazz instrument. My goal is to demonstrate its versatility across all genres, from classical to contemporary to pop and beyond.
As I continue my musical journey, I hope to inspire others the way my dad inspired me. I want to pass on my love for music by becoming a professor of saxophone in the future, sharing not just technical skills but also the emotional depth that music offers. I want to encourage my students to follow their own paths, just as I’ve had to carve out my own path despite the challenges. Through my music and teaching, I hope to honor my dad’s legacy and keep his passion for art alive.
Devin Chase Vancil Art and Music Scholarship
Music has been an integral part of my life since I first picked up the saxophone at the age of 9. Over the years, it has shaped who I am, both as a person and as an artist. I’ve played all types of saxophones—alto, baritone, soprano, tenor, and bass—but my primary instruments are the alto and baritone saxophones. Music has always been a way for me to express emotions that are too complex for words. It has taught me discipline, perseverance, and the importance of both individual growth and collaboration with others. These lessons have not only made me a better musician but have also influenced the way I approach life.
The impact of music on society is something I’ve come to deeply appreciate through my own experiences. Music is a universal language that transcends boundaries. It connects people from different backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life, allowing them to communicate in ways that words cannot. Whether it’s through the emotional power of a symphony, the energy of a jazz improvisation, or the storytelling in a popular song, music has the ability to evoke a wide range of emotions and foster understanding between people. In this way, music plays an essential role in building empathy and unity in society.
Art, and music in particular, is also a vital outlet for expression. For me, playing the saxophone is not just about hitting the right notes or mastering technique—it’s about channeling emotion and sharing a part of myself with my audience. Through music, I’ve learned to express emotions I couldn’t always articulate. This is especially important in a world where so many people struggle to find the right words or feel silenced. Music gives a voice to those who may feel unheard, offering them a platform for their emotions, stories, and struggles. It’s a form of catharsis and healing, not just for the performer, but also for the listener.
Furthermore, music is a source of inspiration and motivation. Throughout my life, it has been a driving force that has kept me going, especially through tough times. When my father passed away suddenly two months ago, music became a way for me to channel my grief and remember his support for my art. He always encouraged me to follow my passion for music, and his love for art has stayed with me. Music has allowed me to process my emotions and continue moving forward, even in the face of loss. In this sense, music becomes more than just entertainment—it becomes a source of strength and resilience.
Music is also a means of preserving culture and history. Through various genres, music reflects the struggles, triumphs, and beliefs of a society. Classical music, jazz, folk, pop—all these genres carry with them the history and experiences of the cultures that created them. By learning and performing these pieces, we not only honor the artists who came before us, but we also keep their legacies alive. Music is a living, breathing testament to the evolution of society, constantly evolving yet always rooted in the past.
In conclusion, art and music are essential to society because they offer a unique way to communicate, express emotions, inspire others, and preserve history. Music has shaped who I am, and it has the power to shape the world around us. As a musician, I hope to contribute to this ongoing dialogue, sharing my love for the saxophone and its ability to transcend boundaries, unite people, and inspire change.
William Smith Scholarship
Music has always been at the center of my life. I began playing the saxophone at the age of 9, and over the past 8 years, it has shaped who I am both as a person and as an artist. I’ve played a variety of saxophones—including alto, baritone, soprano, tenor, and bass—but my primary focus has been on the alto and baritone saxophones. Music has been my way of expressing emotions that words can’t fully capture, and it has provided me with a sense of purpose, discipline, and creativity. My musical journey has not only deepened my connection to art, but it has also instilled in me the importance of perseverance and collaboration.
Throughout my high school years, I’ve had the opportunity to perform in various ensembles, including jazz band, concert band, and jazz combo. I’ve performed at local festivals, concerts, and special events, and each experience has taught me the value of teamwork and the power of music to bring people together. Music has given me a voice that transcends words, allowing me to connect with others in a deeper, more meaningful way. Through the process of practicing, performing, and interacting with other musicians, I’ve learned the importance of both individual growth and group collaboration, and these lessons have been instrumental in shaping my future goals.
My long-term goal is to pursue a degree in classical saxophone performance and eventually become a college professor, teaching saxophone to the next generation of musicians. As a musician, I am passionate about breaking the stereotype that the saxophone is solely a jazz instrument. I want to demonstrate that the saxophone can transcend genre boundaries and be a versatile instrument capable of expressing a wide range of emotions, from classical to contemporary to pop. I hope to inspire others to see the saxophone in a new light and to encourage young musicians to explore its full potential.
I also want to contribute to the broader musical community by sharing my love of music through teaching. As a future educator, I hope to pass on not only my technical knowledge of the saxophone but also the emotional depth that music can offer. I believe that music is not just about learning an instrument—it’s about connecting with others, expressing emotions, and understanding the world through sound. I want to create an environment where my students can grow, not only as musicians but as individuals who understand the power of art to change the world.
In addition to my musical aspirations, I’ve always believed in the importance of giving back to my community. I’ve volunteered at FeedMore, a local organization that provides food for families in need, and at Shalom Farms, where I help with food production and distribution. I also volunteered for my high school’s adjudication, helping to judge and support younger musicians in their performances. Giving back to my community is an essential part of who I am, and I believe that through music and service, I can make a positive impact in the lives of others.
Through these experiences, I’ve seen how music can touch lives and create positive change. Whether it’s through teaching, performing, or volunteering, I believe that music has the power to bring people together, inspire change, and make the world a better place. I am excited for the future and the opportunity to continue growing as a musician, educator, and member of my community.
