Bio

Hello! My name is Bethel Amare, and I am passionate about making a positive impact in the field of healthcare and medicine. Currently, I am a third-year pre-medical student at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, where I am pursuing a degree in biological sciences and public health. As a first-generation Ethiopian-American and first-generation college student, I am driven by a strong desire to excel academically and contribute to my community. I believe in using the knowledge and skills I acquire to uplift and educate those around me. My ultimate goal is to enhance the cultural competency and accessibility of the U.S. healthcare system, particularly for underrepresented groups like Black women and other women of color. I am determined to make a difference by leveraging my education and experiences to address the disparities and challenges faced by marginalized communities in medicine and medical education. By advocating for greater inclusivity and equitable opportunities, I aim to aid in the creation and development of a better, safer, and more welcoming future for all individuals, both in healthcare and beyond. The journey toward becoming a physician is an exciting one for me, as it presents an opportunity to positively impact the lives of others daily. I am committed to inspiring and empowering others to follow their dreams and make a difference in their unique ways.

    Nikhil Desai "Favorite Film" Scholarship
If I had to choose one film to call my all-time favorite it would have to be "Moonlight." The movie takes on sexuality and the search of identity within the black community from the perspective of Chiron. The movie shows black men in a light that they're almost never portrayed in cinema. The visuals of the film and use of realism and formalism were amazing, the use of a hue changes to subtly show the contrast between how the main character (Chiron) views each character and their relationship with him, the movement of the camera in certain scenes along with the use of handheld shots in much of the scenes showing Chiron as a boy really allow the viewer to feel as though they are in the scene themselves. The movie tackles countless stereotypes of black men; Juan was a drug dealer but also acted as a father figure to young Chiron, Juan was caring and compassionate towards and gave Chiron the protection and guidance he desperately needed. The film changes how cinema depicts black people, specifically dark-skinned Black man who are normally shown as brutes and are constantly over masculinized. Jenkins shows black men as vulnerable and sensitive people, having characters discuss hopes, aspirations, and sexuality with one another. All in all the movie is an amazing depiction of the coming of age of black man and his battle with fitting into cultural norms of sexuality and masculinity.
    Bold Activism Scholarship
I hope to have a lasting impact. I hope the acts for change that I do for my communities (black,queer/LGBTQIA+,women), and all others in need from now on to incite the change that marginalized communities seek. I want the petitions that I sign, the protesting I chant at, the knowledge I seek and inform others of creates an everlasting change that everyone can benefit from. While my in-person action has been limited due to Covid-19, in the past I have gone to and participated in multiple protesting ans strikes like the 2019 D.C. climate strike with my schools environmental club, along with school and park clean ups where we pick up litter on campus and at local parks.
