In my Christian Philanthropy and Vocations class, we have delved into the realms of Economics and Morality. Despite the perception that economics and morality are inherently distinct, they share a profound connection. This connection stems from the impact of economic systems on our collective consciousness. The producer's conscience guides the operation and marketing of businesses, while the consumer's conscience dictates where their financial resources are directed. Major corporations, such as Nike, Ziploc, and Chevron, leave substantial carbon footprints, whether through the emissions produced during manufacturing or the environmental impact of their products. These business practices, detrimental to our environment, highlight a conscious choice by corporate leaders to prioritize profit over ecological well-being. While I lack the ability to influence the decisions of billionaires and their factories, I can exert control over my consumer choices. In my commitment to environmental stewardship, I actively avoid purchasing items from major corporations with significant carbon footprints. This conscious decision serves to abstain from further endorsing products that contribute to environmental degradation. Instead, I opt for eco-friendly alternatives, including locally sourced food, products, and clothing. Even when venturing beyond local markets, thorough research into a brand's environmental practices precedes any purchase. An additional strategy for environmentally conscious consumerism involves resisting the impulse to purchase fast fashion products. Whether in makeup or clothing, trends rapidly come and go, leading producers to prioritize quantity over quality. Steering clear of top trending items becomes imperative, as they often bear a larger carbon footprint compared to products from smaller, environmentally conscious brands offering similar items. Implementing such changes in consumer behavior contributes to the reduction of individual carbon footprints. This reduction holds personal significance, considering the escalating environmental catastrophes witnessed worldwide, from the extinction of species to coral bleaching and the visible melting of polar ice caps. The repercussions of our actions extend to future generations, and the urgency to act is underscored by the awareness that my children may witness the extinction of iconic species like Tigers. The Earth, once the shared ground of our ancestors for centuries, now faces imminent destruction. Our carbon footprints disrupt the delicate balance of the planet, adversely affecting biodiversity. An ecosystem's collapse becomes likely when biodiversity diminishes, as essential roles go unfilled. The historical example of the kelp forest and otter population collapse serves as a cautionary tale, signaling the potential repetition of such events. As a society, collective change in behavior is essential to prevent the impending collapse of our Earth, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
    McClendon Leadership Award
Leadership, to me, does not mean having complete authority. Leadership means having a willingness to listen to the people around you and make decisions that benefit everyone. My biggest role model for leadership was my 16u Travel Softball Coach, Coach Cat. She coached my friends and me in a way that allowed us to build our independence while still being held accountable. She listened to us when we told her that we needed help with certain aspects of the game and was willing to stay after to give us that one-on-one time if we needed it. Yes, practices were hard, and yes, sometimes I just wanted to quit, but Coach Cat helped me push through to become a better softball player. Coach Cat gave me my first true leadership opportunity by making me the team Captain. I do admit the experience was rocky at first, but once I got the hang of it, I thrived in that position. I held myself to high standards, which made the rest of my team do the same. When we did drills, I always made sure to work the hardest, to lead by example so others would follow. That alone made it the best experience I have ever had with a travel softball team. It turned out so well because I listened to my team when they told me that they needed help, and I worked alongside them to achieve our goals. I believe that if I did not have a good foundation of what being a leader entails, I would not be able to collaborate as effectively as I do with others. If I understood leadership to be an authoritarian, "my way or the highway" type of relationship, no one would want to follow me, let alone listen to what I had to say. Being able to listen to other people's needs and act accordingly not only allows for better relationships with people but also can lead to better ideas and inspiration. For example, George Washington was a great general, but he was even greater because he listened to his associates and let them decide where his troops needed to be when they had more knowledge about the British army's positioning. So, even historically, America's greatest leader was able to take into account other people's opinions. Being a leader means having a group behind you, supporting your every action, so in turn, you should give that group some support back.
Reasons To Be - In Memory of Jimmy Watts
My number one core value is to give what you can. Not just give away old clothes, but give things that you would not want to give away. However, it has not always been that way. During my primary school years, I was brought up at a public school in a smaller town. I had no experience with service or community whatsoever. That was until my Mom was diagnosed with cancer. The town I was in rallied around my family and me; we received so much support from everyone. My friends' parents would let me stay at their houses for weeks on end while my Dad was with my Mom in the hospital. Thanks to my community's help, I was able to finish my primary school years. Though my Mom did end up passing away when I was in 5th grade, I will never forget all of the time and effort the people around me gave to make me feel happy in such a dark time of my life. After 5th grade, my family moved to a different town, and I started attending a Catholic school. Though I am not particularly religious myself, I became in tune with service. My community gave me so much when I was struggling, so now I felt it was my time to give back to them. I started volunteering at the Charles Shultz Museum by greeting people who came in and watching the kids draw in the education room. Though it was a good volunteering experience, it was not as fulfilling as I had hoped it would be. I wanted to help my community in an even greater way than what they did for me. I was giving my time, but I felt I could do something better with it. The summer of my junior year, I started volunteering at the Bird Sanctuary because it was a more science-based way of volunteering, and it would mean I was able to make a bigger impact on my community. I was becoming more interested in a career path involving the FBI, and since at the Bird Sanctuary, you have to find out how the birds are injured, it's the closest thing I could get to Forensic Science. Also, at the Bird Sanctuary, you get to nurse the birds back to health by keeping their cages sanitary and giving them food or anything else they need. This volunteering job was more demanding, making me feel like I was truly giving back to my community. However, a part of me still felt like I could still do more for the people who helped me so much when I was younger. In the same junior year summer, I was given an opportunity to spend one day with Special Agents from the FBI to learn more about how to help my community and how to join the FBI. I had to apply to get in with a well-thought-out essay, and with a little bit of luck, I made it in. I spent the whole day on the USS Hornet learning about ways to protect my community from danger. I learned two things: One, the FBI is a job I could see myself doing. Two, I could most definitely get into the FBI if I get a college degree. Though I have not made it to the FBI yet, I am looking for colleges with good biology majors so I can fulfill my dreams of becoming an FBI forensic scientist. These are the same dreams I developed because of my need to give back to my community.
    “Stranger Things” Fanatic Scholarship
The three best characters from Stranger Things to choose to create a squad to fight against supernatural entities are obviously Eleven, Max, and Steve. Eleven is an obvious choice in my opinion. She is the most in-touch person to the portal of the Upside-Down because she created them. If she was able to close a giant portal like she has done in seasons 1 and 4 we are going to need her on our side to have a fighting chance. Also, a part of Eleven's supernatural ability is to see glimpses into people's lives. That means she can see a bit of their past, present, or future. That becomes super helpful when trying to fight an alienoid creature because then you can know what you are doing wrong. Also, seeing what other people are doing in the present can benefit you because then you could find them if they were stuck somewhere. Next, Max would be my best choice. (Preferably all this before she went into a coma.) Not only because she and Eleven are good friends and their comradery will help the group. Max has a connection with Vecna, the monster from season four that could ultimately help us defeat it. Yes, Will also has that connection, but he is so connected that Vecna has used him to spy on his friends to see where they are. So to eliminate that risk of Vecna spying on us Max is the better option. My last pick would be Steve. Not because he is mildly attractive, even though he is. Steve is legally an adult so that means he could drive my new squad around in a handy-dandy car. That would be super beneficial for hunting supernatural entities. Also, he would be bigger and physically stronger than either of the girls, minus the superpowers. So when it comes to a close combat situation I would like to have Steve on my side. Especially because we all know the damage he can do with a studded baseball bat.

If I am being completely honest Millennials-Gen Z most likely will not be the 'greatest generation.' Not only are we going to be dealing with economic stress in our early adulthood, but our world as we know it is suffering from global warming. I do not want to even mention the political tension that is going on in this day and age. These effects that our generation will undergo will most likely not be fixed in any of our lifetimes. Millennials-Gen Z will be a more resilient generation and hopefully set up the next generations to come on the correct path to hopefully better society. I think the pandemic took a toll on everyone's mental health and ability to function in society. As a 'zoomer' in America I experienced everything firsthand. I watched as our economy started crashing on the news, I saw American citizens storming the capital, and I watched as George Floyd was shot on a video. I saw all of these things happen behind a screen, all one-sided, all-targetted propaganda. Not being able to talk to people in person to get different perspectives on big events in American society has left people to gain their information on the internet. So when people did convene after covid America as a nation became more separate because now everyone is so sure that their way of thinking is right, no one wants to hear each other out. With everyone more worried about who is being elected or rising prices in produce no one has the time to think about global warming at the moment. With a country seemingly divided, we do not have the time to fix the world. What I do think Millenials- Gen Z will do is set up the foundation to better society. Yes, people will always have their own opinions, but I do think with a little more forward-thinking that America can be more of a secure unit. Once we are all more together then we can deal with challenges like global warming. That's why I think that Millenials-Gen Z will be better described as resilient than the 'Greatest generation.' We have already had our hiccups and have not completely recovered from them. However, once we do recover we can fully bring our society together and set up the next generation with the skills to fix the mess we helped make.

My school makes all of the seniors do a senior service project which means that I had to choose an organization to volunteer for all year and make a presentation about at the end of the year. After research and having experienced other types of volunteering opportunities I decided I want to do something that I have not really done before, so I decided to volunteer at the Bird Sanctuary. I had to get a certificate of Qualification to even volunteer there because I would be dealing with real animals, but I got the certificate. Now every Saturday I go and help injured birds by cleaning out their cages, feeding them, and making diets for the birds. I have helped birds as small as hummingbirds, to birds as big as hawks recover from injuries. Birds come in from many different types of injuries such as being bit by cats, running into glass, being abandoned as hatchlings, or just being sick. Birds are very important to the local environment because I live in Sonoma County and we are big on farms. Birds help eat the invasive plants and insects that try to over take our local crops and habitats so they are very important for maintaining a balanced ecosystem in my community. So by volunteering at the Bird Sanctuary I am actually playing a vital role in our community. Especially because a new variant of flue called the bird influenza is killing more birds than ever. Part of the mission at the bird Sanctuary is advocating for the birds safety, which means making the public aware of things that can harm birds and what changes they can make to help protect them. So for my presentation on the Bird Sanctuary I will be teaching my classmates how they can bird proof their own homes in hopes to get less injured birds at the Bird Sanctuary the following year. If I reached the top of a mountain and left a message I would write “ Give back to your community like how they give to you.” At least in my experience, my town has helped me through all of my hardships. Especially when my Mom died, everyone around me was so supportive and helped me live a semi normal life. I have been volunteering at many places in my home town of Santa Rosa just to show my gratitude towards everyone who has helped me. Even if you do not have an experience with a close loved one dying like I did, your community gives back to you everyday. From the food you put on your plate, to the neighbor that walks your dog that is what your community is doing for you. So helping out in some way in your town is at the very least what you should do to give back to your family, friends, or neighbors.

I'm Ava Walters, a 16-year-old high school senior at Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa. Softball has been a big part of my life, and I've taken on leadership roles like team captain and assistant at our camps. I've also volunteered in my community as a buddy for Miracle League, helped at the Charles Schulz Museum, and volunteered at the local Bird Sanctuary. Giving back is important to me because I rallied around me and helped me when I lost my Mom to cancer at age 10. This experience strengthened my bond with my town, motivating me to volunteer just so I can show my gratitude for what they have done for me. I'm dedicated both in volunteering and academics, maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout high school. I've tackled challenging courses like Honors Chemistry, Advanced English, AP Language, and AP Bio. For my senior year, I'm pushing myself with AP Physics, AP Statistics, AP Literature and Composition, AP Art, and AP Government. I've even earned a Congressional Certificate of Recognition for my art. Growing up in a community-oriented environment, I've always felt a calling to help people. My interest in crime podcasts and documentaries led me to aspire to be an investigator. So when my school sent me an email saying that I could apply to a one day class for aspiring FBI Special Agents I jumped on the opportunity and sent in my application right away. Attending the San Francisco FBI Teen Academy solidified my dream of becoming a special agent, bringing justice to families and making a positive impact. While I learned about various FBI branches, I'm particularly drawn to Forensics investigation or Criminal Psychology. Surprisingly, I learned that the process to join the FBI is accessible—you simply apply on their website if you meet certain criteria. Being physically fit, having a clean record, and a relevant major are key factors. Now, I'm searching for colleges with strong criminal or science programs to build a solid foundation for my FBI application. In the FBI, I'll make a difference by helping solve meaningful cases. I'm also passionate about education, envisioning myself teaching kids how to protect against threats, both in-person and online. This way, I can not only assist those in need but also work towards prevention through advocacy. So one day when I am older I would be able to go back to my home town and teach the students at the high schools about the FBI just how I was taught at the FBI class I went to.
    Barbara Cain Literary Scholarship
I have not always been an avid book reader, I used to hate books. Silent reading time in elementary school was my kryptonite because I used to refuse to stay still and read a book. It became such a problem that the teacher would say that I can go take a walk around the school or help in a different classroom just so I did not distract the other students from learning. I would always opt to go assist another classroom as a teacher's aide just so the principal did not catch me walking around the school and getting my teacher in trouble. My problem was that I never found a genre of books that suited me. That was until I laid my eyes on the first Steven King book. Finders Keepers by Steven King was the first book I fell head over heels for. The first time I ever went into a Barnes and Noble that book seemed like it was staring at me. I had to get it, and I ended up loving it. A true horror book. It had elements of crime, betrayal, and action. I thoroughly enjoyed that book. That book was the first of many horror or crime-related books that I would be reading from then on. The Midwife Murders, The Girl With All Of The Gifts, The Night Shift, and Nightmares and Dreamscapes are just to name a few of the books I drove deeper into the rabbit hole with. I have learned through reading these types of books that I have a deep passion for problem-solving and crime. So from books, I went to podcasts, listening to the latest crime cases and keeping up to date. Listening and reading about these fictional and nonfictional cases has made me realize over the years that I could be the one in real life solving a murder case, I could be the one helping that family. When I had this revelation during my freshman year of high school, my career path was set for me. Somehow in some way, I am going to work on crime cases. Then to meet my goal I got accepted into the Fan Fransico Teen FBI Academy. This was a one-day learning opportunity to learn about the different branches of the FBI. We took this class on the USS Hornet in Oakland California and it was the most interesting class I have ever taken. Real Special agents from the FBI would explain their position and some cases they worked on. Also, we got to hold bomb squad gear and swab for fingerprints off a makeshift crime scene. Most Importantly, we were told the criteria to become an FBI agent. Which was to have a clean criminal record and a major in a field that could help the FBI. That was it. After that class, I have been more inspired than ever because now I know I could easily meet my goal of becoming a crime scene investigator. All I have to do is major in a STEM or Physiological field in college and I will be set. I now have a strong understanding of who I want to be because of books. Thanks to Finders Keepers I have my life path set.
    Barbie Dream House Scholarship
After the Barbie Movie I already had this planned out in my head so I am so glad I get to write about it. My Barbie dream house would be located in Marin, California. Close enough to San Francisco, but also within driving distance to go to Santa Cruz. My house would be protruding off the side of a hill with a long winding driveway that leads up to the house. Along the driveway when driving you would be able to see my big beautiful garden full of fresh produce and bright flowers because your girl likes eating fresh fruit. Once you get to the top of the driveway you would be able to see my old Victorian model light pink Barbie dream mansion! There are three stories in this house, so brace yourself this is going to be a long description. On the first floor when you walk in it is a grand entrance to a gathering room with lavish furniture and snacks set out for you. You are able to see two sets of stairs leading up to the second floor like a castle in England. If you walk between the stairs for a ways you will get to the kitchen where there are personal chiefs already cooking your favorite meal. If you take a left from the kitchen you will arrive at the indoor pool and hot tub, which both have ample bubbles in them. If you take a right from the kitchen you will be in the movie/ karaoke room where the best girl nights are held. You go back to the gathering room and go up the stairs. Now you are on the second floor and the first thing that hits you are the beautiful chandeliers that look like stars hanging from the ceiling. You are greeted with a hallway that contains four doors with giant rooms behind them. You open the first door and you see my dog's room! Complete with a giant dog bed, toys, food dish, and a personal butler for my dog. In the following room you see the guest room you will be staying in. It has a giant canopy bed with a personal bathroom and a walk-in closet. I hope you enjoy it! The next room is my art room. There are paintings everywhere on the walls and the ceiling with all of my art supplies tucked away in neatly organized containers. The room at the end of the hall, the last room you would be going in is my office. How is a girl going to work in a STEM base profession and not have an office? Of course the office will still be glamorous and it has a mini fridge to keep my drinks cold while I'm working. You go back to where you came up the stairs and you notice the stairs still go up beyond the second floor. You walk up the stairs and you will enter my room. I have a giant King size canopy bed with pink silk covers. You walk over to my walk in closet and see that it looks endless with all of the cutest vintage, and trending clothes. You check out my bathroom which has a shower and a bathtub with jets that are the latest model. Lastly, you step on the balcony and admire the view of the Bay from my house.
Scholarship Institute’s Annual Women’s Leadership Scholarship
Leadership can be demonstrated in many different ways. As a mother to a daughter, or as a Coach to a player. Throughout my life, I have been given various opportunities to express my leadership and take charge which I am very fortunate for. I have played roles in my community, on my sports teams, and as an older sister. For my community, I have volunteered at numerous different places. I have volunteered at the Redwood Food Bank, the Charles Schultz Museum, and the Bird Sanctuary. All of them are good places to volunteer to help the community, but where I got to demonstrate my leadership skills was volunteering for a Miracle League baseball game. I was given the task of a buddy to stand next to a child with disabilities to help them enjoy their experience playing baseball without getting hurt. During the game a couple of the other Buddies abandoned their child partner and all of a sudden it was me and four other children. With all of the other adults being occupied and not wanting to risk the children's safety the only option I had was to straight a smaller game of baseball in the outfield so the children could still enjoy their experience without risk of them getting hurt. Another Leadership experience I had was when I was elected to be a team captain for my softball travel team. Since we were all older and had three coaches there were no serious dilemmas, but what I did learn from my time as team captain is it is better to lead by example. If your teammates see you work hard, they will want to work just as hard as you do. None will want to listen to what you preach if you don't even follow your word. Also, it is good to be encouraging in a high-intensity setting because, at the end of the day, my teammates and I were all there to improve so encouraging other people made for a better healthy environment. With the leadership skills I have obtained I want to major in STEM or a criminalistic related field so I can join the FBI. I know it is a high ambition and there is a lot of work required to join, but that is where I find my passion. I want to be able to make my community a safe place and by joining the FBI I will be able to do just that whether in in a forensics lab or a special task force, I will be able to make to world just a little safer. When I finally reach my goal of being in the FBI I can help hold classes like the one I have attended at the San Francisco FBI Academy to teach the younger generations about safety and awareness. Having obtained leadership skills I have no doubt I will be able to run one of those classes let alone be a leader in a team setting when it comes to working on a crime case. Being in the FBI you don't just have to be smart, but you have to be good in a team setting, with my experience of working with others I know that if I put my mind to it I will be able to join.
    Dounya Discala Scholarship
As a growing and maturing young woman, I have had to learn many things that I did not know I would ever need to know. For example, I had no clue that it was wrong to wear a tank on a blistering hot day for a girl, but it is because shoulders are too much for men to handle. At the other end of the spectrum, I was not educated on basic human anatomy, more specifically a girl's human anatomy to any degree where I needed to be taught. If it weren't for my parents teaching me how to stick up for myself I probably would have been complacent when a boy came up to me in fourth grade and started bashing me for my maturing body. For more explanation, I grew and matured a lot quicker than anybody else in my school at the time. Hence I was putting on more weight and developed more curves than other girls at my school. With a lack of education on my school's behalf about developing growing bodies this boy decided that it was a good idea to come up and comment on my appearance. This boy walked up to me to embarrass me for my body by calling me names like fat, lazy, and ugly. I did not know how to react because in my mind I knew that he was saying things just to make me upset, but what pushed me over the edge was his telling me “Even if you joined cross country and lost weight you still would be ugly.” Those words caused a reflex to set in motion that I didn't even know I had at the time and in a blink of an eye my fist connected with that kid's face. Of course, it had to happen right in front of an open window of a full classroom so we both got suspended. Being in trouble I had plenty of time in my room to think over what I had done. In thinking I found that I was not mad at the boy for calling me names, I was mad at him for making me think what he was saying was true. In an environment where I was for lack of better words ‘ an oddball’ self-worth was all I had and he was trying to take it away from me. Being the tenacious little girl that I was from that day forward, I knew that no one can put value on myself rather than me, and if anyone else tried to, they were not worth having around in my day-to-day life. Now I am older and realize all of the trouble I had in my elementary school years was due to a lack of education. No girl should have to go through the trouble of being harassed by a boy because of her body, especially to the extent that they have to get physical to make him stop. Though my story may be told in a way where the situation seems more light-hearted, this is a serious issue that little girls all over the world have to face. I can only hope that my story can reach others and encourage them to hold onto their self-worth because at times you are going to be the only one who supports you. What matters most is staying true to yourself. That's the main takeaway from my experience.
Operation 11 Tyler Schaeffer Memorial Scholarship
Growing up in a world where crime is an ever-present reality has shaped my perspective on the importance of safety and security. Witnessing the devastating effects of crimes like drug abuse, kidnappings, and trafficking in my own community has ignited a burning desire within me to take action and make a positive impact. To prepare myself for a future in law enforcement and investigative work, I am committed to pursuing a major in STEM or criminalistics. My fascination with science-related fields has been evident throughout my academic journey, and I have eagerly taken on the challenge of advanced courses like AP Biology, Honors Chemistry, and Honors Physics. These subjects have not only deepened my understanding of the world but have also fueled my determination to utilize scientific knowledge to combat crime and bring criminals to justice. Becoming an FBI agent is more than just a career aspiration; it embodies a deeply-rooted dream that has persisted in my heart since childhood. The thought of working within the FBI and collaborating with law enforcement professionals fills me with excitement and a profound sense of purpose. My one-day experience at the San Francisco FBI Academy only served to reinforce this conviction. Interacting with Special Agents and learning about their expertise in various branches of the FBI was inspiring, and I left with a clearer vision of the path I need to follow to achieve my goal. I am well aware that the journey to become an FBI agent will be arduous and demanding. However, I am resolute in my commitment to meet the challenges head-on. I understand the importance of maintaining a clean record and obtaining the necessary qualifications to be considered for such a prestigious position. With relentless determination and a willingness to put in the hard work, I am confident that I can surmount any obstacles that lie ahead. Beyond personal fulfillment, joining the FBI presents a unique opportunity for me to contribute meaningfully to my community and society as a whole. As an FBI agent, I envision myself working tirelessly to provide support and closure to families affected by crime. By investigating and solving cases, I can help bring justice to those who have suffered and ensure that criminals are held accountable for their actions. Moreover, I believe that a safer society is one in which people can feel secure in their daily lives. By actively addressing criminal activities and collaborating with other law enforcement agencies, I aim to play a key role in restoring a sense of security to the public. This, in turn, will foster an environment where families can thrive, communities can flourish, and individuals can pursue their dreams without fear. In conclusion, my journey to become an FBI agent is not merely a career pursuit but a lifelong commitment to making a difference in the lives of those affected by crime. When I was just reaching fourth grade, cancer decided to interweave with my family line. Never before have we had cancer effect our family, but it just so happens that it decided to strike my Mom in the bladder. My Mom was diagnosed with stage Two Bladder cancer that was spreading throughout her body. She was in and out of the hospital all of the time, but she was not alone for my Dad stayed with her for the whole duration of her hosptial visits. Since my Dad was taking care of my Mom, my brother and I were made to stay at our Grandparent's house. My brother was four at the time so he could not completely understand what was going on, though he needed a lot of attention since he was a toddler. So my Grandma and Grandpa had all of their focus on him, which left me almost completely unattended throughout the day. My grades took a plummet in 5th grade because no one was around to help me in the way I needed help with schooling. This lead me to resent my Grandparents and my Dad for not being there for me, but what I did not understand at the time is that they were trying their best, but it just was not enough to sustain my grades. On breaks when my Mom came home she would have moments where she would be completely fine, one of these moments lasted a month so our whole family thought she was getting better. So when she went to the doctor and came back with a notice that she had two months left to live we were in shock. I Did not want to resent my family anymore and wanted to spend the most time I can with all of them as a whole at least before my Mom passed. Helping out as much as I can around the house to make my parents and my grandpa's lives just a bit easier. So those two months were the closest I have ever been with my loved ones. Eventually, my Mom did pass, but it put my life in perspective. It made me realize that I can not resent people for long and that it is not worth my time to do so. Loving everyone is so much easier than hating everyone so that's exactly what I have been doing. Amid self-realization, I realized that I wanted to help people for a living. Not just helping with a chore or two like I would with my grandparents, but something that would make a big impact on them. For that reason, and a couple more I want to become a Forensic scientist to help bring families closer by solving new or cold cases. I would have never thought to go down this avenue if it were not for my Mom having cancer because I would have never found condolence in helping my own family while grieving. Thank you Mom for the part you played in my life, may I help others as you did when you were on earth.

"Elevation" by Steven King, revolves around Scott Carey, a middle-aged man living in Castle Rock, a fictional town frequently featured in King's works. Scott faces a peculiar dilemma: he's steadily losing weight without his appearance changing. However, this weight loss is not accompanied by any physical ailments or health issues. As the numbers on the scale continue to drop, Scott's concern grows, and he becomes determined to find the cause behind this strange phenomenon. Despite its supernatural undertones, "Elevation" is not a traditional horror story. Instead, it focuses on themes of empathy, acceptance, and personal transformation. The novella explores how the people of Castle Rock react to Scott's situation and their own prejudices and preconceived notions. It delves into the dynamics of a small community and the impact individuals can have on one another. I think everyone in the world should read this book because as with many of his works, King uses "Elevation" to weave in social commentary. The novella tackles topics such as prejudice, discrimination, and the importance of unity in the face of adversity. These elements add layers of depth and relevance to the story. However, instead of just showing these adversities you can see Scott develop and grow from them. In summary, "Elevation" is a thought-provoking novella that combines elements of the supernatural with themes of empathy and personal growth. It offers readers a unique premise, engaging characters, social commentary, and a concise narrative that can be enjoyed by both longtime fans of Stephen King and newcomers to his writing.
