While I managed to keep up my grades, I struggled with anxiety and seasonal depression. School became my refuge, a distraction from the difficulties I faced at home, but I often felt lonely and disconnected. As the year progressed, my mental health took a darker turn. I started experiencing frequent suicidal thoughts, prompting me to reflect deeply on my life. In one journal entry, I wrote, "I want to die in the sense that I become something new. Not necessarily living, but something like a planet or tree." This metaphor revealed my desire for change and escape from the pain I felt. Attending classes via Zoom meant I was isolated from my peers, and while I maintained good grades, the lack of personal interaction made it difficult for me to engage fully. One particular incident during this time highlighted the adversity I faced as a young Black student. When I expressed interest in joining an advanced math class for my freshman year, my math teacher denied me the opportunity, stating that I “asked too many questions during class.” This response felt like a dismissal of my intelligence and potential, especially when I observed my White and Asian classmates easily gaining access to these advanced courses. It was frustrating to see that my curiosity and eagerness to learn were viewed as liabilities while others were encouraged to excel. This experience brought to light the systemic biases that can exist in educational settings and the impact they can have on students like me. To overcome this obstacle, I had to summon courage. With the unwavering support of my mom, I decided to stand up for myself. I gathered evidence of my strong grades and commitment to learning, demonstrating that my questions were not signs of weakness but a testament to my dedication and desire to excel. I approached my teacher and calmly explained my aspirations, emphasizing that my questions stemmed from a genuine interest in the subject matter. My biggest life passion encompasses various forms of creative expression, particularly makeup, screenwriting, film, and music. Among these, screenwriting captivates me the most, as it merges the beauty of language with the powerful art of storytelling. I find joy in bringing words to life on a screen, creating characters and narratives that resonate with audiences. Growing up, I often felt a lack of relatable narratives in mainstream media, particularly for Black queer individuals. This gap ignited my desire to create queer stories for younger people, especially those who, like me, seek representation in a world that often overlooks them. I want my work to reflect the richness of our experiences, allowing young people to see themselves represented in the art they consume. I believe that storytelling has the power to inspire confidence, foster understanding, and cultivate a sense of belonging, and I am dedicated to ensuring that underrepresented voices are heard.
