Growing up as a woman of color in the vibrant city of Chicago, my passion for becoming a civil engineer is deeply rooted in the transformative potential of this field to address longstanding challenges faced by my community. The significance of civil engineering in shaping the built environment resonates profoundly with my experiences, and it is this connection that fuels my determination to contribute to positive change. Chicago, with its rich tapestry of neighborhoods, has its share of infrastructure disparities. The stark contrast between well-maintained areas and those grappling with inadequate facilities has been a constant reminder of the need for equitable urban development. It is this stark reality that first ignited my interest in civil engineering. Witnessing the impact that well-designed infrastructure can have on communities, particularly those historically underserved, has motivated me to pursue a path where I can actively contribute to addressing these issues. One of the primary problems in my community is the uneven distribution of resources, with some neighborhoods lacking essential infrastructure like reliable transportation, safe public spaces, and sustainable housing. The disparities contribute to a cycle of limited opportunities, hindering the potential for growth and prosperity. As a civil engineer, I aspire to be a catalyst for change by focusing on projects that prioritize inclusivity and accessibility. This includes advocating for and designing infrastructure that bridges the gaps, ensuring that every community, regardless of its socio-economic background, has access to the resources necessary for its residents to thrive. Environmental sustainability is another critical issue close to my heart. In Chicago, like many urban areas, environmental challenges disproportionately affect communities of color. Whether it's air and water quality, or the impact of climate change, vulnerable neighborhoods often bear the brunt of these issues. My goal is to integrate sustainable practices into civil engineering projects, mitigating environmental risks and fostering resilience. By incorporating eco-friendly solutions, such as green infrastructure and energy-efficient designs, I believe we can address environmental disparities and create healthier living environments for all. Moreover, the lack of representation in the field of civil engineering itself is a challenge that needs attention. As a woman of color, I am acutely aware of the underrepresentation of individuals who look like me in this profession. I see this as an opportunity to break barriers and inspire the next generation of diverse engineers. Through mentorship programs, community outreach, and engagement with local schools, I aim to encourage young individuals, especially girls of color, to pursue careers in STEM fields. By fostering a more inclusive and diverse workforce, we can bring a variety of perspectives to the table, leading to more comprehensive and effective solutions for our communities. In essence, my journey as a woman of color from Chicago propels me toward civil engineering as a means to address systemic disparities in my community. By prioritizing equitable infrastructure development, promoting environmental sustainability, and actively working to diversify the field, I aspire to contribute to a future where every neighborhood can thrive, and every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Civil engineering, for me, is not just a career choice; it is a commitment to creating a better, more inclusive world.

Civil engineering, to me, is the cornerstone of societal progress and development. It is a discipline that goes beyond the construction of physical structures; it is about creating the framework that defines our daily experiences and contributes to the well-being of communities. The significance of civil engineering is profound as it shapes the built environment we navigate, influencing everything from the bridges we cross to the roads we traverse. The impact of civil engineering on our daily lives is undeniable. Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and water systems forms the backbone of our societies, facilitating connectivity and enabling economic growth. Urban spaces, meticulously planned and designed by civil engineers, contribute to the aesthetic appeal and functionality of cities. The field plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety, sustainability, and efficiency of the built environment. My journey into civil engineering was sparked by a fascination with the idea of creating structures that stand as testaments to human ingenuity. From an early age, I marveled at the transformative power of civil engineering in shaping landscapes and improving lives. Over time, my passion has evolved beyond the mere construction of structures; it encompasses a commitment to sustainable and innovative solutions that address the challenges of the modern world. One specific area that excites me is the intersection of civil engineering and environmental sustainability. As the world grapples with the impacts of climate change, civil engineers have a unique opportunity to pioneer eco-friendly solutions that minimize environmental impact. This aspect resonates deeply with my commitment to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future. The journey through civil engineering has not been without its challenges. Balancing the demands of a rigorous academic curriculum with extracurricular activities has tested my time management skills and resilience. Yet, each obstacle has reinforced my determination to pursue civil engineering with unwavering dedication. I believe that overcoming challenges is an integral part of personal and academic growth, and it has equipped me with the tenacity required to thrive in the field. Looking ahead, I am committed to furthering my education and hands-on experience in civil engineering, seeking opportunities to contribute meaningfully to projects that align with my passion for sustainability. The challenges encountered along the way have become stepping stones, guiding me toward a future where I can actively contribute to shaping a built environment that not only meets the needs of today but also anticipates and addresses the challenges of tomorrow. Furthermore, my passion for civil engineering extends beyond the technical aspects, encompassing a deep appreciation for the social impact of the field. Civil engineers play a crucial role in fostering inclusivity and accessibility within communities. Whether it's designing infrastructure to accommodate individuals with diverse needs or implementing projects that address disparities in urban planning, civil engineering becomes a vehicle for positive social change. This perspective has enriched my academic journey, encouraging me to explore the interdisciplinary facets of civil engineering that contribute to creating environments where everyone can thrive. As I progress in my studies, I am eager to delve deeper into these social dimensions of civil engineering, aiming to contribute to projects that not only enhance physical infrastructure but also promote equity and social well-being.

The world around us is surrounded by buildings, houses, landscapes, and specific land spacing designed by a person or group of people. Most just admire eye-catching designs or unique landscapes, but when I notice something different, I do not just admire; I think about the artist's thought process and what theme they were going for. Architecture is my intended future study throughout my college career. I hope to further endeavor in studies of art in relation to designing homes and buildings that amplify the beauty of nature. I look around and see houses and buildings that look as though they are disrupting the balance of nature, breaking the boundaries of peace in the surrounding environment. I am often inspired by the works of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright due to his understanding of nature and that it is possible for man-made objects to flow with nature, not obstruct it. I aim to learn more about the study to satisfy my creativity as an artist, environmentalist, and just a person who loves nature. I wish to see more designs in harmony with the asymmetrical aspects of the Earth, not focused on standing out but instead seamlessly blending in. This goal is my mission to spread my creativity, benefit, and inspire others around the world.More than 50% of the Earth's land surface has been industrialized, and an estimated 3% has gone untouched by human interference. As an avid advocate of nature and saving the planet we live on, I often think of ways to cater to the asymmetrical patterns of nature, exemplifying its beauty rather than disrupting it. As an aspiring future architect, I would use my creativity in design to build unique homes in nature. I plan to construct houses that blend in with their surroundings in simplicity but consist of complex structures. The homes would be eco-friendly, having an environmentally low carbon footprint made up in the design and implemented with modern technology. I would incorporate materials like bamboo, recycled steel, precast concrete, and other methods that ultimately are reusable and/or recyclable. In still being an eco-friendly home whose popularity is rising, I also plan to include my own taste and personality within the plans. My favorite style is gothic architecture, which originated in the middle ages. I studied Gothic architecture in my AP art history class, where I further developed my appreciation for the buildings and designs of that time. I often brainstormed how to put my own twist on it. I love the stained glass windows, pointed arches, and ornate decoration. I aim to design resource-efficient homes to preserve our natural resources, protect the environment around us, and include my own style while making a safe, substantial, enchanting home.

This is the first piece of my societal issues series. In this piece, I layered the stories of racial crimes and injustices with the eyes of Black Americans watching history repeat itself. I burned the edges of the paper purposely to symbolize the American system trying to forget the horrible things that happened to the Black Community throughout history. The charred edges also represent the lack of black history we are taught in the American School system, burning away the stories of people who suffered for this Land to be where it is today. I have the colors of the American Flag in the background, symbolizing the advocacy for nationalism in a nation that purposely makes it hard for minorities to succeed.

Pawn to e4, knight to f3, defend, attack, clear the board, keep your queen intact. Chess is a game of critical thinking, calculation, strategy, and creativity. Like analyzing a chessboard before my first move, I analyze situations and make quick assessments before forming conclusions. I enjoy thinking beyond what is in front of me, being more of a plan ahead rather than in a moment type of person. I make calculations every day without even realizing it: how test grades affect my overall percentage, how much time I have to get ready, approximately how much time I should spend on each homework assignment and other little things I dwell on before making a move. When these thoughts walk my mind, it feels like everything around me is put in a slow-motion effect when I actually make these decisions in seconds. My creativity expands my mind the most. I consider myself more than artistically creative, I choose creative paths every day. In classes that you would think there is no room for creativity, I find myself implementing my innovative characteristics quite often. I figure out unordinary ways to solve problems that my peers around me would not think to do because it is not the standard way. My methods are not incorrect; they are just a different approaches to the same conclusion. My thoughts shape my actions, and my actions shape my results.

During COVID-19 I learned more about myself than I would have during a normal school year. My time at home was spent focusing on school work and self improvement. My grades were always great , but they excelled tremendously because I had time to really take in the concepts I was learning. I was not worried about what time I had to be at practice , or what meetings I had after school. I also realized my room was one of my favorite places to relax and focus. The environment of my room reflects my own personality , from the table of plants , to the wall full of faux ivy leaves , then to the corner of all my artwork , and back to my painted cow print door. I came to a realization that it's okay to sometimes slow things down , and take time to prioritize mental health which is a key factor to how I perform school wise. I have grown from the character development formed in my quarantine cocoon , and hatched into an overall better person that I am proud to be
