I can recognize aquarium-flavored Softsoap anywhere.
My first memories of Softsoap trace back to the Jacksonville Nemours Hospital, where my brother was being treated for Clubfoot. I spent countless hours in waiting rooms before kindergarten. I watched physicians roam around, emitting the Softsoap aroma while establishing trust with their patients. Physicians provided my family with additional healing built upon compassion & understanding.
Not yet able to ride a bike, I recognized something special.
As president of my school’s Red Cross club, I initiated an awareness campaign, sharing stories of youth & infographics to my school’s RC club page & hosting a Mapathon where my team mapped hundreds of buildings, enabling Saharan African communities to more efficiently receive humanitarian aid. The Softsoap redolence followed me as STEMout CEO. After building a team & website & connecting with local administrators & labs, I conducted experiments & science activities at local underfunded primary schools to increase minority participation in STEM.
Through these experiences, I recognized that my work was built upon the same tenets of compassionate care that I associated with healthcare. The aroma that doctors radiate I no longer associate with qualities that fascinate me from afar but rather values that are now my own—values of compassionate care that inform how I can continue to broaden my repertoire of interacting with others through understanding & service. Who knew that hand soap would be an impetus for the journey that lies ahead as I pursue a career in medicine?
