I am a high school senior who is motivated about my future goals and new learning opportunities. Attending college to pursue a degree in Accounting and getting certified as a CPA are some of my few aspirations. I grew up in Jamaica, where most people live day by day not knowing where their next dollar is coming from and how to keep that dollar from going in and out of their pockets repeatedly with no form of savings. In the future, I want to collaborate with non-profit organizations to help set up a business and personal finance learning programs for people within third world countries.

Everyone has at least thought of what they want to achieve in the future or an idea of what it means to be successful. I grew up in Jamaica, and everyone I knew wanted to become a doctor, nurse, or lawyer. My parents' dream is to see their daughter in scrubs with the title Dr. imprinted in front of my last name, but that wasn't what I wanted. The most important thing to remember is that you should choose a career that you will love to do.
The picture that comes to my mind about my future is so remarkable. I'm dressed up professionally and attend work in my own office at a big company. This dream attracts me. After tons of research on the internet and reading books about financial management, the information convinced me to pursue the path of accounting in the future. The type of education I will need for this job is a minimum of four years of a bachelor's degree in accounting and to complete the uniform CPA exam. Attending an HBCU will allow me to be instructed in an environment alongside diligent black students and professors. Studying accounting at Howard University will prepare me to become a leader in an industry where minorities are underrepresented. The program will provide me with an in-depth knowledge of the finances of a business with courses such as Accounting Principles that will teach me the rule to follow when recording financial data, which is crucial to know so that financial statements are comparable. Other courses such as Tax Principles and Procedures will allow me to help others who are not well informed on how to file taxes correctly. In the long run, courses like these will prepare me for real-life situations that involve finances.
I have many personal goals that I hope to accomplish during and after my college education experience. In today's society, many people lack the knowledge of financial literacy. I want to teach people how to properly do their taxes and manage their finances. I want to work with organizations at Howard to help set up financial literacy programs for people in both local and oversea communities for those in need. Not many people have the privilege to go to school and learn life financial skills, so as someone receiving the education sharing it makes me more than happy. I have a great deal of confidence that given the chance I will accomplish a lot in college.
Accounting is so important in the business world. Without it, you wouldn't be able to track expenditures and make investment decisions. I know that I have several strengths and weaknesses, I will have competitors, and I will face some opportunities and threats on my path to success. However, My work ethic is an asset of mine that people rarely have, along with my ability to follow directions. I'm also good at interacting with people and helping them with their needs. Some weaknesses I have are that I don't speak up for myself and I don't always participate in group discussions. I have been trying to improve on these for the past few years by speaking more in public settings. As someone who dreams of potentially owning an accounting firm after having work experience as an accountant, I know that Howard University will prepare me with experience and technical skills to interpret and use when I venture into the business world to become a future black leader.

Many people decide to achieve something because of how it would look on paper, but I believe that doing something you love and enjoy is a more significant achievement. A major achievement I accomplished was starting an online business at fourteen. Through the excess of time and organization put into its creation, I made it successful with the help of my father.
Creating a drop-shipping business was a very hectic but necessary achievement in my life. After many hours spent researching notable items and managing each sale on a spreadsheet, I decided to close the business one year later because of the strain it caused upon me. However, after the close of the business, I was motivated to venture into personal finance where I stumbled upon the stock market. When I did my research on the stock market I was intrigued by option trading, so with the assistance of my father, I created a custodial account to start executing trades with the money I earned from the drop-shipping business. In the beginning, I didn't know what I was getting myself into; hence I ended up losing half the money I earned from drop shipping. I didn't let my losses change my mind about the stock market. I took trading classes that taught me strategies to use and how to minimize loss. I still participate in the stock market. I now actively manage a portfolio of stocks and option swing trades.
I got my first job at Chick-fil-A. Working at a restaurant was something I thought I would never do because of how withdrawn I was. Communication wasn't my forte, so speaking to each customer had me trembling and forgetting my words. Over time it became effortless talking to customers and my ways of being closed off were absent. Now my communication skills are better than ever. I haven't gotten the chance to volunteer during my high school career because of my family responsibilities and I had to work to help support my family at the age of sixteen; hopefully, I will have more freedom to volunteer during my college career and after with financial assistance.
My achievements have led me to the person I am today and who I will be in the future. Wanting to be an accountant in the future is because of the interest I grew in business and personal finance, and my first job taught me the skills I will need to do so. That is why it is more important to do things that you love and not for the look of it to others.

When I was younger, my cousins and I would start partners: a popular form of savings system in the Caribbean where a group of people creates a partnership to save together over a few months. The person who's entrusted with the management of the money is called the banker. Most times, I would be deemed the banker. I was very grateful to be given such a trustworthy role. I would always have a half notebook ruled up, ready to record deposits with zip lock bags that had my cousins' names written on them. We would put down about one hundred to two hundred Jamaican Dollars weekly from our lunch money for five months out of the year. Events like these have developed my interest in personal finance. My interest started to grow even further when I took it upon myself to research personal finance. I stumbled upon the book Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. Ever since I started reading more of his books about investing and the psychology of the business world. After reading his books, I gained a better understanding of financial independence and the difference between assets and liabilities. Hence, his books have inspired me to explore deeper into the studies of accounting and business.
I have many personal goals that I hope to accomplish during and after my college education experience. My plan after college is to become an Accountant. Accounting is a vital part of the business world. Without it, you wouldn't be able to track expenditures and make investment decisions. Accountants prepare, examine, and check the accuracy of monetary records. I hope to impact not only my community but a broader community in various ways with my degree. In today's society, many people lack the knowledge of financial literacy. I want to teach people how to properly do their taxes and manage their finances. I want to work with organizations at my future school to help set up financial literacy programs for people in both local and oversea communities for those in need. Not many people have the privilege to go to school and learn life financial skills, so as someone receiving the education sharing it makes me more than happy. I hope to continue to do so even after I leave school.

Going to college will prepare me with the experience and technical skills needed to interpret and use when I venture into the business world to become a future black leader.
